Roar of Time: Generation II

Yesterday we broke a long-standing record on the site: we finally beat the highest number of views we’ve had in a single day on the site, and we hope to beat the latest record come X & Y. Admittedly we slacked a little yesterday and didn’t bring the promised continuation of The Journey to X & Y with the start of Generation II. As such we’re a little unprepared for today, the planned article isn’t finished and we don’t have any back-ups. What do we do?! We try something new…

As each new Pokémon Generation comes around there’s always a list of new features and ideas fans want to see incorporated into the games. Whether or not anything of that list can be crossed off is of course down to the dedicated team developing the games. What if you could us Dialga’s Roar of Time to turn back time and make one change? Any change you wanted. What would that change be?

You could pick something obvious to change about Generation II, but we want you to think up something big and potentially game changing, but keep it realistic. Don’t forget to think about how the change would effect the future of the series, of course time is all wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey but in some way it would alter the games as we now know them.

What are you waiting for? Get those brains ticking and turn back the clock! We should also apologise for not publishing an article as we promised yesterday, but we’re kicking off the week now even if it is with this quickly thought up article. Hopefully it’ll get our readers thinking regardless!

    • I think it was Iris. I was looking for that, but I didn’t see it. Maybe it’s in the next episode, because Gible is at Oak’s lab and Ash is in Pallet Town. Maybe Iris and Cilan’s train broke down and they stopped to visit him.

Did they ever explain why Iris and Cilan left. Misty had to take over for the gym, Brock had to go to med school, May wanted to compete in Johto, Max was sent home to prepare for his journey (I think), Dawn wanted to stay in Sinnoh and train and then head off to compete in Hoenn, so why are Iris and Cilan leaving for Johto? If they’re just sightseeing, they should just stay with Ash. If not, I could imagine Iris wanting to meet up with Claire, but what about Cilan?

  1. What would I change about Gen 2? The story. You defeated Team Rocket before they really did anything compelling. I also would’ve liked to see Lugia and Ho-oh incorporated more into the plot perhaps, rather than just thanks for saving the radio tower, here, have a wing.

    • I can imagine Mega Typhlosion having its whole back aflame.
Its the Volcano Pokémon and its English and Japanese name come from explosion and typhoon. Actually, Mega Typhlosion might just be
a big ol’ blaze of glory.

      • I love this!
At first, I was not too keen on what seemed like a dark cloud emanating from the back, though I realized it’s a smoke cloud, and really adds to the overall design without going overboard. I give this an A+

  4. I think I would change things about each generation, actually
Gen 1: My first game was Gold Version, so I never did start with Gen 1. However, I would go back and remove all those awkward real-world references, like the statement that Mew was found in South America. Those things really didn’t hold up well over the years. Also I’d make that guy on Cinnabar Island stop saying that the Raichu you gave him evolved. That’s just infuriating.
Gen 2: A sentiment that’s been expressed before me; I’d make new Pokemon a little less spaced out. Kanto-exclusive Gen 2 Pokemon was an interesting idea, but I really struggled to beat the Elite 4 in Gold Version and I barely even played around in Kanto, so I never got to really experience those. Making things like Slugma, Murkrow, and Skarmory a little easier to find would be ideal.
Gen 3: Stop Wallace from becoming Champion. Seriously, the guy barely changes his team from his Gym Leader setup and somehow he manages to usurp Steven? Having already beaten Juan, I just did the exact same things to Wallace and he went down just as easily; most underwhelming Champion ever in my opinion.
Gen 4: Make Fossils obtainable in some other way than excavating in the Underground. I never really did use the Underground feature as it was meant to be used, and I’m sure many others can say the same, so it was a pain to try and hunt around for the right Fossils to resurrect when other games just present them to you. Also, I’m not a fan of Fossils being version-exclusive. Just my opinion.
Gen 5: Change the translation. I’m not sure how many of you feel the same way, but I think Black and White were translated HORRIBLY. The dialogue was super awkward, used waaaay too many exclamation points, and was just generally a lot less polished than previous gens. I guess that’s the influence of Nintendo of America doing their translating in-house, which is still, in my book, a huge mistake, although I’m sure they don’t really care how good their translation is so long as people still buy their games, which frustrates me greatly.

    • Hm, I never noticed B/W’s translation being poor quality. Also, I would definitely not say that in-house translating is a bad thing; look up the Nintendo Treehouse sometime, those people are amazingly hard workers and overall one of the most elite localization teams in the entire world.

      • Treehouse I know is great. Whatever team specifically did Black and White were clearly amateurs. They had characters say things like “woooooow” with all those o’s in there, a trait that no Pokemon game ever had because it looks stupid and immature. The characters’ names were also awful in some cases, most notably “Grimsley” and “Stu Deeoh” in BW2.

        • I’ll definitely give you that the German names for the player-characters was an odd and not-so-great choice in my opinion. The rest didn’t bother me very much, but I see what you’re saying.

  5. I know they’re incorporating old pokemon, which i’m grateful for but make the new pokemon more abundant. Cause gen 5 tried the clean slate thing but failed so in b/w 2 they fixed it. P.S Aurorus 😉 love ya!

  6. Mega Meganium!
My only complaint about it are its antennae staying the same.
I’d love for its antennae to have pink tips. Little change, big difference.

  7. I’m thinking of breeding for pokes with perfect IV’s which I know is Extra Hard.. so would I need a ditto? or are 2 of the same Pokémon just s good?

        • If Power items (power brace, power band etc) are held by either parent in the Pokemon Daycare, that parent passes down its IV in that respective stat; HP for Power Weight, Attack for Power Bracer, and so on.

          • Really? I just bred a Jolly natured Shroomish yesterday with “Relatively superior potential overall. Its best potential lies in its attack, it can’t be better in that regard.”

Can I breed it again holding a Power Bracer (think that’s attack), to pass down the attack IVs?

          • You can take that even further…say you want max speed and atk. If your male parent has max atk, give it power bracer and if the female has max speed, give it power anklet. Then, every baby is guarenteed to have max speed and max attack IVs.

          • Would take a lot of breeding to find max speed IVs. I got lucky on max attack IVs lol.

I had been training this Shroomish this morning haha. It’s Breloom now and lv 82.

          • Hmmm….there is always a strategy where you can try to find a wild shroomish female or ditto with max speed IVs by making sure your pokemon has a speed stat just 1 point less than a max IV one. But unless it’s high leveled, like over 50, there’s no guarentee that it has max iv, maybe 30 or 29. That’s probably the easiest way I can think of.

  8. I wonder if we’ll get gameplay of the fossil evolution’s on Smash. Highly unlikely but still.

Also, the Cartridge designs have been unveiled.

  9. Blaze Kick is Super-effective on Oorotto. GF could be the biggest trolls ever and make it an Ice, Steel, or Bug-type and not Grass. That would be so… ugh…..

    Reply
    • If that’s true, then Sudowoodo has had a type change.

There was gameplay with it in a horde battle against Flareon. Flareon used a fire type move that hit the 4 Orooto and the Sudowoodo, and out of all of them, Sudowoodo’s health went down the quickest. Rock resists’ fire doesn’t it, so how come it went down that quick?

      Reply
          • The fact that Orotto is weak to fire type moves means it’s part grass type. Sudowoodo is know for being mistaken for part grass type.

What if, it does evolve into Orotto, and the fact of being mistaken for being a grass type has become a wish of the Pokemon, but because it was hit with water for being mistaken as a grass type, it wanted to get revenge and is also part ghost/dark type?

          • Maybe Blaze Kick is a dual type move (Fire & Fighting) and is super effective to both Grass & Rock types!
That explains all! Plus no type change for Sudowoodo!

          • The emphasis on Dual type moves was misguided. For example, take the new move Freeze Dry. It’s an Ice type move which is super effective against Water type Pokemon. I think this is what was meant to by “Dual type”

        • But Blaze Kick was super effective against Orooto, meaning it’s definitely part Grass type.

If Orotoo is the evolved from of Sudowoodo, then the type change makes sense.

      • Here’s a screenshot of the HP after or during the attack. BTW, what music do you think that is that’s playing from the part about the horde battles and Sky battles?

    • Nothing against anyone, but I feel like I’m the only person who could care less about Oorotto. He’s just an average Pokemon whose design doesn’t really appeal to me. I’ll probably think of him like I think of Sudowoodo, or Garbodor, or Boufollant (Spelling fail)- they’re alright, but generally forgettable. The fact that they’ve teased him so much is laughworthy, but he’s not interesting enough to hold my attention for long.

      • Today I learned… some Pokémon are forgettable.
That so cray-cray to me because I feel as if I have
a Pokédex implanted in my brain. I will never forget.

          • Well, to me, there’s never been a time when I think of Pokémon and say, “Oh, yeah! That thing!
I forgot all about [insert PKMN name]!”
They’re all kinda just… listed in my head, I guess. Lol

      • There must be something more to him since they have chosen to blatantly ignore him despite inserting him into various clips.

But I agree, there always those pokemon that are just forgettable.
