Roar of Time: Generation II

Yesterday we broke a long-standing record on the site: we finally beat the highest number of views we’ve had in a single day on the site, and we hope to beat the latest record come X & Y. Admittedly we slacked a little yesterday and didn’t bring the promised continuation of The Journey to X & Y with the start of Generation II. As such we’re a little unprepared for today, the planned article isn’t finished and we don’t have any back-ups. What do we do?! We try something new…

As each new Pokémon Generation comes around there’s always a list of new features and ideas fans want to see incorporated into the games. Whether or not anything of that list can be crossed off is of course down to the dedicated team developing the games. What if you could us Dialga’s Roar of Time to turn back time and make one change? Any change you wanted. What would that change be?

You could pick something obvious to change about Generation II, but we want you to think up something big and potentially game changing, but keep it realistic. Don’t forget to think about how the change would effect the future of the series, of course time is all wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey but in some way it would alter the games as we now know them.

What are you waiting for? Get those brains ticking and turn back the clock! We should also apologise for not publishing an article as we promised yesterday, but we’re kicking off the week now even if it is with this quickly thought up article. Hopefully it’ll get our readers thinking regardless!

  1. To Everyone who makes the articles on PJN:
You guys are amazing. I can’t stand the wait for X and Y. It’s. BRUTAL. But your articles make it the wait enjoyable with these well written articles! Thank you for everything! I’ve only been here for 2 days, too! XD

  2. If i could go back i would tell the designers to bump up the batteries……ill never forget the day my original silver died on me 🙁
It was like 5 years later until i found out why and how to replace the battery but it still didn’t bring back my save file. So yeah battery life… but i wouldn’t sacrifice the day/night system (which was the main cause of battery meltdown) as i loved the inclusion of that.

      • Well now this takes a think….i definitely know i had tyranitar (took me agesssss) and houndoom (again because it’s so late in the game to get it) and typhlosion plus kingdra (which i had to trade to get) and i believe skarmory and either umbreon or electabuzz. It was just so sad because back then it wasn’t easy to trade pokemon so kingdra was a heavy loss and tyranitar took so long to get.

  3. I think the overall ease at which Kanto could be completed…it really was not that difficult once you got there and then there was such a jump to Red… i think a higher level curve and a more linear gym path with a bit of storyline would have improved the game slightly but i still can’t fault the inclusion of kanto.

  4. One thing I wouldn’t change is the inclusion of Dark-types. What would happen if it wasn’t included? Sorry, but I HAD to post this pic :p

    • I think it was because the games were so new that no one really cared. Now that we have a certain formula, I’m not surprised people lost their minds, although Fairy-types do fit in with Dragon-types and Ghost-types. Smogon seems to be ok with the type, so its clearly gonna be a good type!

        • I was leaving for Europe on the DAY of E3; so when I saw the Direct in the morning before our departure, I had no time to have my mind blown (well, I had 12 hours to think it over -_-)

  5. One thing I would change from Gen I-III is in order to complete the Pokédex you have to CATCH Pokémon. I hated that. Especially since I didn’t have a link cable :p

  6. I want to buy SoulSilver and live the “second-gen” experience again. I have now decided that I will never delete a save file in any of my games, as it would create an inexistent ID for some Pokemon (OCD I know) and yeah. HGSS for the win.

        • I got into Pokemon accidentally. My aunt had a Game Boy Color in their car pockets and so when I became addicted to the formula, I decided to get HeartGold because I wanted to have a more modern experience. This was after Gen. 5 came out XD

          • I don’t exactly remember how I got into Pokemon; starting 1st grade, the Pokemon phenomena began to grow in our elementary school, and it just caught on. However, all the people that were once into it are now out of it, except for me (although I am meeting new Pokemon fans in high school now), so that’s cool.

          • Same. I was introduced to it because it popular back in like second grade while I was in school. All my grade school friends fell out of love with it. IT wasn’t till college that I met a bunch of people that love it as much as I do. 21 year old junior in college and I love it as much as when I got my hands on it back in 1998!

  7. I would travel back in time with Dialga and set up Pokemon Contests in all the regions so that in the present day it’s as important as the pokemon league and there are contest halls in every city and you can choose to go on a coordinator journey or a trainer journey. And there would be an elite 4 champion equivalent for the end of the game. And the the contests would actually use a complex program to analyse the creativity of move combinations… that is all

  8. This list of types set to be introduced in Pokemon X/Y was recently leaked on 4chan, and even though it is 4chan, it seems very plausible:

    Fairy/Dragon- A pseudo-legendary, has elements
similar to Hydreigon, but also has a Fairy-type look, giving it this typing.

    Electric/Water- Helioptile’s
evolution, which is an electric amphibian with elements of an Aquatic God.

    Grass/Ghost- Oorotto’s typing.

Fire/Water- There will be a line
of “unnatural” Pokemon types in Generation VI, this being one of the three.

    Grass/Fire- Another unnatural Pokemon type.

    Water/Grass- The final of the
three unnatural Pokemon types. Difficult to find in the grass, and great
    stats overall.

    Fairy/Bug

    Fairy/Dark

    Fairy/Electric

    Fairy/Fire

    Fairy/Water

    Fairy/Grass

    Fairy/Steel

    Fairy/Rock

    Fairy/Ground

    Fairy/Fighting

    Fairy/Flying

    Fairy/Normal

    Fairy/Ghost

    Fairy/Ice

    Fairy/Electric

    Fairy/Poison

      • That’s so true. My dad used to play Blue with me before my brothers grew up to entertain me. We bought him a DS Lite and got him hooked on Black and Black 2. Now he’s trying to catch them all, but he doesn’t realize that he can’t in those two games alone. We’re considering getting him a 2DS for Christmas along with X/Y because he doesn’t care about graphics too much.

    • I tried to get my parents to play Pokémon when I was little. They didn’t understand it and my mom couldn’t pronounce Magikarp or Gyarados :/

  10. Hey guys, first time commenting on the site! I hope to remember to post as this account more often.

Also I think the levels on the Rival/Elite Four should have been buffed for post game, which I think they fixed in HGSS??

    • WELCOME!! 😀 I agree! I hated how low the levels were. I felt unaccomplished having a Lv. 28-30 Pokémon as my toughest against the 5th Gym :/ And Silver was too easy to beat :/

  11. Ok so this is my try at choosing 1 poke per Gen to make a team. It was my suggestion to do it in the first place but I had yet to do it. So I chose 1 from each of my Gens Teams:
    Dedenne
    Gliscor
    Seismitoad
    Sceptile
    Charizard
    Garchomp

  12. I loved the fact that we could explore two entire regions, but I would have loved it more if places from the first game weren’t removed, like the inside of Silph Co. or the Rocket hideout. It would have been fun to explore those several years later, maybe finding some cool leftovers in the Rocket hideout? I know that the game was almost as full as it could be, but it still would have been cool.

  13. when they use real sprites for surf (so you can actullay see the pokemon you’re riding) non water types who can surf (like torous) would be only half the speed of a large water type like (lapras), and if you have a small pokemon (like sqirtal) the trainer would have to be in water with being draged along, now this would be faster thatn tourous but slower than lapras. and they could introduce pokemon races for pokemon that you would have to train to raise the speed stats
