Roar of Time: Generation II

Yesterday we broke a long-standing record on the site: we finally beat the highest number of views we’ve had in a single day on the site, and we hope to beat the latest record come X & Y. Admittedly we slacked a little yesterday and didn’t bring the promised continuation of The Journey to X & Y with the start of Generation II. As such we’re a little unprepared for today, the planned article isn’t finished and we don’t have any back-ups. What do we do?! We try something new…

As each new Pokémon Generation comes around there’s always a list of new features and ideas fans want to see incorporated into the games. Whether or not anything of that list can be crossed off is of course down to the dedicated team developing the games. What if you could us Dialga’s Roar of Time to turn back time and make one change? Any change you wanted. What would that change be?

You could pick something obvious to change about Generation II, but we want you to think up something big and potentially game changing, but keep it realistic. Don’t forget to think about how the change would effect the future of the series, of course time is all wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey but in some way it would alter the games as we now know them.

What are you waiting for? Get those brains ticking and turn back the clock! We should also apologise for not publishing an article as we promised yesterday, but we’re kicking off the week now even if it is with this quickly thought up article. Hopefully it’ll get our readers thinking regardless!

  1. Love the Doctor Who reference in the third paragraph Moving, you sly Stoutland you! A minor thing I would do is remove Youngster Joey forever! Another thing I would do is raise the difficulty for the gyms (except for Whitney cause she is a bxxch with her Miltank and we know it) because let’s be honest getting the badges is a little too easy, especially when you can completely skip Chuck and Jasmine to go straight to Pryce.

  2. Okay, I would change the rareness of elemental stones in Gold and Silver. I mean I once had a Gloom that I would like it to evolve into Vileplume. That was my one and only dream, but I couldn’t do it because I didn’t have any leaf stone.

But you know what when I wanted to evolve my Sunkern into Sunflora I realised “able” option on Gloom. I was so freaked out, I mean I thought Gloom was able to evolve into Vileplume via sun stone too. That was the most shocking revelation of my life. It evolved into Bellosoom. I was always in thought of Bellosoom being single stage Pokemon.

I was truly shocked, utterly shocked. I can’t forget that moment and I won’t. Later I have learned the real purpose of evolution stones because at those times we were in misconception that you can evolve any level-up evolve pokemon via elemental stones before they reach that certain level, for example you can evolve voltorb into electrode before level 30 by using thunderstone. So funny.

    • Yeah. I have no clue how many stones I bought in Yellow to get Ivysaur, Wartortle, and Charmeleon to evolve, among others too.

    • How many times does the Doctor actually say that? I’ve watched Seasons 1-2 and 5-6, but I think I’ve only heard him say that once. I just started Season 3 (haven’t touched 4 yet), and I get that it’s a Dr. Who reference, but I don’t know from where or when.

  3. I loved Gen 2. Personally, I much prefer Heart Gold and Soul Silver to their original counterparts, but I have a few fond memories of Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Crystal.

A few things annoyed me, however:
    -The introduction of roaming legendaries.
    -Celebi being event-only.
    -Kanto being glossed over.
-Houndour, Slugma, Sneasel, Misdreavus and Murkrow can only be obtained after you visit Kanto.

  4. This is not something I would change, but it’s something that IF changed, would rewire the conventions of Pokemon.

My Roar of Time for Gen 2? Shiny Pokemon becomes a dropped beta element and is never implemented.

Now, hear me out for a second. How many of your Pokemon memories involve beating the insane odds and finding a shiny? Probably quite a few. And what about you fellow shiny hunters? Wouldn’t your opinion on Pokemon change if there was one less thing to do post-game? These are some true questions I have had, and it’s weird to think about how different life would be without shinies.

However, having no shinies would mean NO SHINY XA-

  5. My problem with Generation II is… they hardly introduced any new Pokemon. To date, I think that Gold/Silver/Crystal incorporated the fewest with there being about… What? 99? I mean, I read somewhere that Gen II was just supposed to be a sequel to Gen I so maybe that’s why they cut back; they didn’t plan to go any further. I don’t know. And I kinda have the same worry with Kalos and Gen 6. They said that all Pokemon from the past 5 Gens will be in it. But what does that say about the Kalos dex? Is it going to be as tiny as Gold and Silver’s?

    • It’s possible. Gen 4 and Gen 2 both followed regions with over 135 new pokemon.

I am also apprehensive that mega’s may be expected to satiate the fanbase in regards to new pokemon introduced.

I am still holding our for 121 new pokemon.

  6. I was never blessed enough to play Pokemon until the 3rd Generation, so I think it’s best for me not to answer this one. I guess I’ll just have to wait till next week’s article. 🙂

  7. All of these are excellent suggestions. They’re all changes that were desperately needed in Gen II, but then again they wouldn’t have really been massively game changing for Gen III and beyond.

What if they had introduced Fairy type in Gen II, along with Dark and Steel? There would have been changes to hidden power calculations, the type match-ups may have been completely different, because dark and steel wouldn’t have been played around with yet. Maybe we would have had another trio of eeveelutions (Dark, Psychic, Fairy). And then Gen IV may have had another eevee trio with Dragon, Grass, Ice? And finally, would we be getting a different type introduced in Gen VI? Maybe another type to counter Fairy type haha.

I know one thing I WOULDN’T change about Gen II is the fact that you could get both box art legendary Pokemon in the game. That was a great feature (except my Lugia in Gold version was never able to learn aeroblast XD)

  8. The only thing that I would want different about Gen II is that the gym leaders would be tougher (higher levels) Nothing future generation game changing :/

  9. Wait, I thought of something I would change that’s more drastic! Back in RBY, there was a little Easter Egg. When your Gameboy Color turned on, if you held down one of the directional buttons, the game would change color entirely. We all know it as being either greenish monocolored game. But whenever you would hold down the button, the world would change, but most importantly, so would the Red’s color. I used to be so excited as a kid to play as black-colored Red and green-colored red. It was like costume changes before costume changes were even a thing.

I wish they would have continued that in GSC. I know that the GBC had actual vivid colors instead of what the original GB had, but imagine if Pokemon would have allowed us to change the MC’s color ever since. We’d be walking around with blue-colored Gold, yellow-wearing May, Dawn with a pink shirt, and Hilbert with an orange one. The color-changing Red (character) was such a cool Easter egg that I was sad to see was gone. Maybe if it had remained, we would have gotten MC customization sooner. Maybe not.

  10. I wish they’d switched Babies for Evolutions. Do I want to evolve Jynx into a straight up awesomesauce Poke or say, I don’t know, make a baby Jynx and call it MY SMOOCHIEPOOKINS?! (not enough characters damn)

(p.s. I hate Dr Who with a burning passion.)

    • Seriously.. most of the old-poke evolutions we received in Gen 4, we could have gotten additional ones since Gen II. I mean, they aren’t even useful on Little Cup tournaments..

( lol, why the hate on Amber? I really don’t like Dr Who either.. Too much hype 4 it)

  11. What I loved most about gen 2 (crystal) was you were given an egg from the daycare man and you wouldn’t know who it was until it hatched! They need more of the surprise element.

  12. Growing up i never played the GB Gold and silver but there were Pokemon I loved more then anything, Heracross and Donphan!
But along with those two, some other Pokemon that I loved were Gligar, Piloswine, Steelix and of course Quagsire! also Delibird and Elekid.

Even as a kid I’ve had a love for Ground Pokemon

(Do i have too much dirt in my head, cuz I think my Ground Obsession is getting over-inflated)

  13. Nice Doctor Who reference. I believe there should have been a transfer system that allowed you to transfer your Pokemon from Gold and Silver to Ruby and Sapphire….and Emerald. When you think about it, you could transfer your Pokemon from your original Red/Blue/Green/Yellow to Gold/Silver/Crystal then you can transfer it to Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. From there you could transfer to 4th Gen then 5th Gen and even to 6th Gen. It would be amazing, but it wasn’t able to be done, and that’s really depressing. I know the hardware might of had issues to where it may not have been able to make a connection to a GBA, but it really seems that it would be important. It’s like starting anew when you play Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, which isn’t bad, but it would have been nice to be able to transfer them.

  16. I feel like Gen2 often gets the short end of the stick. It’s really not a completely new generation. It usually gets treated unfairly compared to the other gens. It’s specifically meant to be a sequel and addition to Gen1. (Originally called Pocket Monsters 2). They had the games ready in ’97 but pushed the date back more than a year to enhance colors for the Game Boy Color. Most of the Pokémon were already designed at the time of R/B/Y as well as the mechanics. It is one of the most dynamic Pokémon games we have, changing numerous aspects of the game and enhancing mechanics greatly. I think it’s absolutely perfect considering how quickly it was made, and how perfectly it created a foundation for Pokémon. I wouldn’t change a thing, and I think Pokémon/Game Freak are doing a good job adding on new features as we get more and more games.
