Roar of Time: Generation II

Yesterday we broke a long-standing record on the site: we finally beat the highest number of views we’ve had in a single day on the site, and we hope to beat the latest record come X & Y. Admittedly we slacked a little yesterday and didn’t bring the promised continuation of The Journey to X & Y with the start of Generation II. As such we’re a little unprepared for today, the planned article isn’t finished and we don’t have any back-ups. What do we do?! We try something new…

As each new Pokémon Generation comes around there’s always a list of new features and ideas fans want to see incorporated into the games. Whether or not anything of that list can be crossed off is of course down to the dedicated team developing the games. What if you could us Dialga’s Roar of Time to turn back time and make one change? Any change you wanted. What would that change be?

You could pick something obvious to change about Generation II, but we want you to think up something big and potentially game changing, but keep it realistic. Don’t forget to think about how the change would effect the future of the series, of course time is all wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey but in some way it would alter the games as we now know them.

What are you waiting for? Get those brains ticking and turn back the clock! We should also apologise for not publishing an article as we promised yesterday, but we’re kicking off the week now even if it is with this quickly thought up article. Hopefully it’ll get our readers thinking regardless!

  1. The worst part of Gen 2 was how badly spaced out the new Pokemon were. When a gen starts one now expects to see a lot more new Pokemon than old, but in Johto the new Pokemon were rarer than Kanto ones.

Skarmory, for example, is so rare you can only catch it in one of the last route’s of the game, and only one trainer actually uses it. I’ve seen a lot of people confuse Skarmory and the Slugma line as being part of Gen 3 due to how common to find they were in Hoenn.

  2. I would 86 the night and day/time dependent function that required a battery. My favorite game, Silver no longer works because it’s battery went dry. while it was a nice novelty for the games, its not been in any other games except for the gen II and remakes.

If anything, they should have made the night and day function run on the same process Egg hatching works of. x number of steps changes the time from night to day.

      • The night and day function only was in gen II and their remakes, the time function was in gen III games but not the gen I remakes, and the time function was very very limited in RSE. Also, since the birth of the DA, the games have used the DS system time, leaving them not dependent on tracking their own time with a battery that dies. Nintendo should have either waited, or made it where you could have the battery easily replaced without jeopardizing the saved game. It might have come off ugly, but they could have given GSC a AAA battery input just over the label, it there is enough room. Heck, even making the cartridge with small Philip head screws so you could remove the back panel and replace the watch battery would have been a good move on their side, and as mentioned, made sure it didn’t impede the game data in any way.

  3. I’d definitely raise the wild Pokémon levels. Trying to get leveled up was a PAIN in Gen. II, though I understand that was improved at least slightly in HGSS.

  4. Everything. EVERYTHING.

Such a flawed generation. The Pokemon leveling, the Pokemon selection in Johto, the evil team (something other than Team Rocket or a Team Rocket that isn’t just basically begging to get Giovanni back), cutting out Kanto so Johto can not suck as a region, less baby Pokemon, either give Red a new team or replace him entirely with someone who isn’t a horrible boss fight, etc. etc. etc.

The only good thing was everything about Blue and how he was handled. Oh and the mechanics changes I guess. Those can stay.

  5. Whitney not being cheap.

And Pokemon like Xatu being available earlier.

And Kanto having higher level Pokemon. Why would I want a level 4 Pikachu when I’m already level 60?

    And those -fucking phone calls-.

If you’re going to call me you better have something amazing to say.

  6. I probably had my best team ever in Soul Silver:
    Typhlosion
    Ampharos
    Red Gyarados
    Ursaring
    Tyranitar
    Dragonite

One thing I would probably change about Gen II was obviously how they didn’t incorporate the legendary into the story line

  7. To be honest I loved everything about the second generation! They added so many new mechanics and features, including being able to breed pokemon for the first time! And the sprites were so nice to look at that it boggled me as a child! But to make it interesting: I’d have put in new fossil pokemon, as it is the only gen that doesn’t have them! It could have made an interesting side story, potentially involving Rocket.

  8. The phone calls, those stupid random phone calls. I feel the poke swarms could have been incorporated into the Radio instead of having trainers call you.

  9. I love GSC, though I agree with others that the levels of the wild pokemon should be upped, and the introduction of new pokemon such as houndour, misdreavus, sneasle, smeargle, among others, should have been obtainable, at least within the Johto region, before heading off to the Kanto League.

Now for a substantial change…maybe scrap the battle tower or completely revamp it. Add more rewards than vitamins.
Add new battle modes and tournaments.
Add a gym leader tournament, or a monotype tournament.

I just skipped over the battle tower, though it could have easily been a fun feature.

  10. I would have really loved it if Jasmine had been a more difficult trainer… but with only 4/5 steel-types to choose from my substantial change wish would be for there to be more steel (and dark) type pokemon released, since there were so few of each compared to ~200 pokemon.

  11. I do wish to know everyone’s team through Johto mine was:
    Typholsion
    Noctowl
    Ampharos
    Ursaring
    Umbreon
    Politoed
I do admit my team was pretty bad

  12. The major problem with GSC was the level-scaling. Wild Pokemon go up from lvl2 to 25 at a reasonable pace, and then it plateaus in the 30’s. Even the final area doesn’t have any Pokemon above lvl 50 or so, making leveling to beat Red an obnoxious grind. Oddly, Heart Gold and Soul Silver did not really do much to fix that, although they mostly fixed the other big issue, that Kanto seemed like an empty wasteland.
One mistake I don’t think they’ll ever make again is having some new Pokemon unavailable until after beating the Elite Four, like Slugma, Houndour, Murkrow, Larvitar, and Sneasel. Also, Kanto Pokemon were largely the stars of the game, aside from the starters. Most of the new Pokemon that were available pre E4 were rare. And a lot of the Johto Pokemon were…terrible. Not design-wise so much as in terms of stats and movepool.

  13. Ahh GSC…the last pokemon game I played with absolutely ZERO spoilers, because I didn’t have a computer at the time. Plus my first game was a japanese gold version, so I got the game 1 year before it’s english release. I remember all of my friends would come over to my house to watch me play. Since I couldn’t read japanese, there were no strategy guide, it was the hardest pokemon game I ever played as of today. I beat the whole game, but you could imagine my reaction when I realized you can go to kanto and you can battle red. When I got english silver version a year later, I realized how easy the game was if you can actually read stuff properly.

This was my 2nd favorite generation.

    Positives:
Pokemon Variety, Red/Blue, Kanto, Holding Items, Dark/Steel, Team Rocket, Shiny pokemon, Day/Night, Transferability with RBY, Connectivity with Pokemon Stadium 2, Roaming Legendaries,

    Negatives:
Very low leveled battles, Environment is bland (buildings, forests, and caves)

  14. Crystal was my first game, and it will always be my favorite. If I could change anything, it would be the lack of available/total new pokemon, especially fossil pokemon.

    • I remember hearing about Crystal having animated sprites and girl option. That was pretty new that time and I was dreaming of how animations would be. I have never had a chance playing it though.

    • Crystal was my first game too.
Gotta say gen II legendaries were awesome, and from my group of friends I was the only with a Suicune, since they had gold and silver.
But yes, new fossils or the availability of the older ones would have been awesome, since is near Kanto.
For me it was perfect since it was my first game, but gotta say that iwhatever failed in gen II was pretty much fixed on gen III and the remakes

  15. Probably something that should have made its way to at least gen 3, was once you beat the game you have the option to start a new game with diffuclity modes like hard and export modes which I hope they introduce in x and y.

  16. I really wish gym leaders use new pokemon of the region such as:
    Faulkner-Hoothoot
    Bugsy-Pineco
    Morty-Misdrevaus
    Chuck-Hitmontop

    • I totally agree with you,
Gym Leaders should try use Pokemon native to their respected regions.
Like using Pokemon native to its region when starting a new journey

    • I could have seen Faulkner with Hoothoot or Murkrow, and Bugsy with Pineco or Ledian. Pryce I can understand though since the only Ice-types introduced were Sneasel, Swinub, Piloswine, and Delibird and well it would have been a joke to give him Delibird.

  17. I love Johto. I played and loved Red, but Silver was the first game I poured hours and hours on end into. Finding something to change would be pretty tough. I could say to make more Johto Pokemon available earlier, but I think Johto gets away with mixing in more Kanto ones because it was only the second generation and some people hadn’t played Red/Blue/Yellow.

I guess I’ll go with the cop-out answer of sorts and say they should have expanded Kanto. However, I don’t think that Kanto was bland- in fact, I think that it was completely appropriate to limit Kanto since it made the game almost twice the original’s size. Where I wanted it expanded was on its story. Kanto was basically just a challenge area that really didn’t progress much of the plot. I would have liked to have either continued battling more of Team Rocket or to have something about Red prevalent in the plot. I wish that they could have given us the Kanto starters too, just for travelling to Kanto.

    • If you compare the quality of sprite animations in crystal to sprite animations in Emerald or even Platinum….you realize how lazy gamefreak got after crystal version

      Reply
      • I wouldn’t call it lazy, I feel like it’s more likely that they didn’t have time or space in the game to animate all of the sprites so nicely and thought it would be a better use of that time and space to focus on other aspects of those later games.

        Reply
    • I started in Emerald so I never had the chance to play this generation or the first (excluding Stadium). Boy, to me the color scheme looks off, but I think that’s due to handheld color limitations.

    • Comparatively, yeah, they were awesome. I remember being a kid and wondering what in the world Venusaur’s back sprite was. I knew the Pokemon from the show and the book, but so many Pokemon looked garishly distorted in the RBY sprites. Gen II had the first nicely colored sprites and their designs were pretty close to the Pokemon themselves.
