To keep up with our Gen 1 week, leading up to the XY release, here is my pick of some amazing artwork based on the first 151 Pokémon!  I have tried to go for some great images which have an artistic twist, with more varied, bold styles.

Here we see Bulbasaur mid-battle, leaping towards his opponent about to Vine Whip them into the ground! The bright lighting and smooth colours give this a very modern, fresh and almost plastic model look. His big eyes and chubby legs keep that innocent nature alive as he jumps out of the scenery.

Charmander has always come across as an inquisitive little Pokémon to me. The muted colours and soft lighting suit this cute picture well. I love his grabby paw/hand trying to get that leaf which is just escaping his grasp, blowing away in the breeze.

Squirtle by blix_it

This unusual watercolour of Squirtle really caught my eye. The movement of the different shades of blue represents the water beautifully and it seems like he has just dived in. It is a very simple painting detail wise, but I think it works perfectly for this underwater scene.

Pikachuu by Sekkosiki

I find this image just adorable *squeal*! Pikachu’s cute, round face peering out from the undergrowth surrounded by glowing plants is truly enchanting. The tiny, sharp detail in the flowers and leaves contrasts Pikachu’s simple, bold monotone yellow face and really pulls the image together.

This is a gorgeous autumnal watercolour painting of Eevee having a little snack. The slightly more realistic style of this painting makes Eevee look more wild than cute. I can just imagine sneaking up for a closer look, but then she scampers away with an apple in her mouth for later.

I am completely in love with this beautifully rendered 3D image of Snorlax. The slight soft blur and flat colours match Snorlax’s calm, lazy personality perfectly, and the pink and fluffy background make it look like he is falling into the land of dreams!

  6. My favorite art from Generation One will always be the Base Set TCG cards. When the first games came out, all we had were pixelated versions of the Pokémon. I remember buying pack after pack just to see the art and what each Pokémon looked like. I still have all my cards today 🙂

        • ‘Toxeon’ is what everyone seems to want to see. Now that it’s been confirmed that Sylveon (fairies whatever) will be weak to poison, I’d love to see it unveiled. Oh and 27 days to go? HYPER.

          • I know 😀 This makes me happy. It also makes my Arbok that I shipped over from Fire Red (all the way through Gen IV & V) at Level 100 all the more relevant again. Poison needed new life.

          • I agree, but we’re still waiting for the eeveelution of the other type from gen 2, the Steel-type eeveelution. My thinking is that they’re trying to make one eeveelution of every type and when Dark and Fairy-types were introduced, they decided to get those ones outta the way first.

          • So your Arbok is from Gen 3 right? When it arrived in whatever Gen 4 and 5 games you were playing, could it learn the moves from those generations that an Arbok could normally learn?

    • I’m trying to figure out how Marill’s and Jigglypuff’s retconning into Fairy-types will affect their evolved forms. Will Azumarill and Wigglytuff be retconned into dual Water/Fairy and Normal/Fairy-types too? And what about Azurill and Igglybuff?

      • I don’t see any way Azumarill and Wigglytuff wouldn’t be fairy now as well. That would be like the introduction of the Steel type, and they showed Magnemite being part steel, but Magneton is pure electric instead. The prevolutions, there is a chance they may not have it, or maybe in Azurill’s case outright change the normal to fairy, because it was going to lose it anyways.

          Azurill: Normal/Fairy
          Marill: Water/Fairy
          Azumarill: Water/Fairy

          Igglybuff / Jigglypuff / Wigglytuff: Normal/Fairy

          Now Regarding Gardevoir being Psychic/Fairy, I believe Ralts and Kirlia will remain solely Psychic. And then you have the option of evolving Kirlia the Psychic Pokemon into either a dual Psychic/Fairy (Gardevoir) or a dual Psychic/Fighting (Gallade).

          I actually made a list of fairies that I thought would be retconned that I will repost

      • I posted these before but reposted them for you again to give you idea on the fairies that I believe will become retconned and how it will affect their evolutionary lines.

        I can imagine eviolite Chansey becoming Uber now since it is immune to dragon type attacks. Most of these retcon’s will be needed especially since the metagame is updating so much with pokemon being able to wake up out of paralysis now depending on your bond with it, electric pokes can’t be paralyzed, grass are immune to powder/spore moves, ghosts not being affected by “fleeing” type moves, and fairies receiving 0 damage from dragons:

        -Swablu / Altaria | I feel like their line may be the most drastic change. I feel like they will get Fairy/Flying or Fairy/Dragon. Swablu is already a dual Normal type which could change, and they just don’t scream dragonish to me. Their too fluffy like swirlix, but beautiful like sylveon. They also have healing moves/abilities.

        -Johto starters are known for being “pure”, but Meganium is the perfect candidate for Grass/Fairy because it revives dead plants with its breath. If it doesn’t get reclassified I can imagine its Mega Evolution becoming Grass/Fairy

        -I can also imagine Shaymin’s Land forme being Grass/Fairy while its Sky Forme remains Grass/Flying

        -The fact that Suicune purifies water around the world, has a healing ability in the form of Water Absorb, and has wing like things protruding from its back makes me think its a Water/Fairy candidate, but I doubt they will do that and leave Raikou/Entei mono typed.

        I also believe Moon Stone and Shiny Stone’s will be seen as the official fairy evolution methods. Lots of fairy pokemon already evolve this way.

        • Yeah, I remember hearing something about Clefairy and Togetic, at least being retconned into Fairy-types. I can sort of imagine Celebi being retconned into a Grass/Fairy-type or at least gaining a Mega Evolution that’s Grass/Fairy.

    • Which one? There have been lots of eeveelution rumors. There wasn’t one attached to the Pokebeach Leaks, though. Was there another specific rumor that called this second Mewtwo being X and an eeveelution too?

  20. I love that picture of Eevee! With my favorite season coming up, this goes perfectly with the feeling of fall. The faded warm colors match so well with Eevee, and this picture is just so darn cute! I want this picture on my wall! >:)

  23. tomorrow is my birthday, so it would be nice if the upcoming pokemon announcement would give me something nice to wake up to on my birthday 😀 tho it probably will just be the “gottacatchemall!” website…

  25. For some reason, I think the Bulbasaur’s nose is too pig-like. The Bulbasaur evolutionary line don’t have a prominent noses do they?
