FAKE: Generation VIII Starter Pokémon Revealed?!

THESE HAVE NOW BEEN DEBUNKED AS FAKE! The artist has been found. Now you can let us know if you’re RELIEVED or DISAPPOINTED by the news. We’re still leaving the post up in its original form for continued discussion.

A post, apparently made on a Chinese forum, included three photographs of what purport to be the starting Pokémon for the next game. As with all rumor posts we advise you not to treat these as real until officially confirmed.

We’re remaining very suspicious until there’s any other outside corroboration to their authenticity. Because of the situation with Gen VII’s leaked final evolutions some artists may just be wanting to get our hopes up early this time. We encourage users to treat these as FAKE until there’s any more evidence! The Japanese does not seem quite up to par.

If you’re interested though, here are the final typings that were mentioned alone with the photos:

  • Grass-line ultimately becomes Grass/Electric-type
  • Fire-line ultimately becomes Fire/Steel-type
  • Water-line remains pure Water-type

Hopefully we’ll learn the truth about these in the coming weeks!

  1. Weren’t the creative designs for the Alola starters inspired by movement? Each of these “new” starters seem to have a very expressive face, which would give them all an overlaying theme of “expression.” I feel like that gives them some validity 🤷🏻‍♂️

  2. Fire starter looks like a real joke, please. I don’t like grotesque designs like that. It’s too cartoonized.

Grass starter is somewhat interesting, I hope it does not turn into something absurd as Chesnaught. Before, I would think that Nah, starter becoming Electric is too much. But after one starter having ghost type, I don’t think they have limits on that.

I’m mostly curious about Water starter. It is really interesting.

    • That’s a matter of design tho. The problems with the new “leaks” isn’t the design of the Pokemon, but the shoddy Japanese used on the sheets. If someone at GF really drew them then they’d be fluent in Japanese and wouldn’t make such mistakes.

        • So the thing you posted about the gen 5 starters: people said they were fake because they looked too similar to old Pokemon right? (obviously a dumb argument lol) The problem with the new “leak” isn’t the designs it’s the Japanese written on the sheets. People that can read Japanese are saying there are multiple grammatical errors on each sheet. Errors that a person fluent in Japanese wouldn’t make. Also if you look closely the picture frame is in the same spot in each picture meaning that the person wasn’t just taking a pic of them as they were on the wall, but was actually taking the frame off the wall and replacing it. The art is super solid, but the fact the Japanese isn’t is really a red flag.

      • To be fair the alola starter evos leaked there as well. That said if these are fake whoever designed them deserve props for how good they are

  3. Idk if the Bears gimmick with the scary face is plausible for a starter. It only works in the dark so it would be quite a situational defense mechanism especially to market through the anime or merchandise. It kinda strikes me as odd the more I think about it.

  4. I don’t believe the DeviantArt page is the original source of the starter leaks. The color difference is the biggest giveaway…

    • i don’t really think another pure water starter would be a good idea, as we have had 3 already, blastoise, feraligatr, and samurott. i would say 3 should be the limit for starter type combinations. at least for a while.

      • I think there was a chance the types were from elsewhere but I can’t remember. Anyway if you look through this artists gallery I think it confirms he made them.
