FAKE: Generation VIII Starter Pokémon Revealed?!

THESE HAVE NOW BEEN DEBUNKED AS FAKE! The artist has been found. Now you can let us know if you’re RELIEVED or DISAPPOINTED by the news. We’re still leaving the post up in its original form for continued discussion.

A post, apparently made on a Chinese forum, included three photographs of what purport to be the starting Pokémon for the next game. As with all rumor posts we advise you not to treat these as real until officially confirmed.

We’re remaining very suspicious until there’s any other outside corroboration to their authenticity. Because of the situation with Gen VII’s leaked final evolutions some artists may just be wanting to get our hopes up early this time. We encourage users to treat these as FAKE until there’s any more evidence! The Japanese does not seem quite up to par.

If you’re interested though, here are the final typings that were mentioned alone with the photos:

  • Grass-line ultimately becomes Grass/Electric-type
  • Fire-line ultimately becomes Fire/Steel-type
  • Water-line remains pure Water-type

Hopefully we’ll learn the truth about these in the coming weeks!

  1. Given that the Japanese on the sheets is not written quite right why even bother posting about this as if it could be real? The art is incredible tho. According to my source when the real starters they’ll feel more like the gen 5 starters. At least that’s what they’ve been told

      • I’m still not buying it. I’m not usually one to be overly skeptical, but in this case I’m not feeling it. I hope I’m wrong because I really like them, but even if mistakes happen I find unrealistic that GF would be unprofessional just because they don’t want to fix the the text. Not trying to be jerk……and you’re right I guess having something to talk about is better than nothing. Just trying to keep myself from being let down

      • Everyone here’s willing to admit they’re probably fake, we just want to hold onto it because it actually brings convo.

        • Oh so do i! I’m just saying the whole “why did you even make an article” is annoying because what’s wrong with speculation?

  2. These were mostly discussed to quite some extent in the previous article. They are almost certainly fake, I still like the Bear and Coral though.

    • Probably it’s just because we want something to discuss. Cause we have had just nothing for months and this is frustrating..

      • I have my reason ……..but the evolution of those concept will be amazing if they have done by GF …..ur video didn’t debunk this by 100% though.

        • It’s not my video but, anyway, I’m pretty confident they’re fake. She has contact with the chinese leaker somehow…Also, you would put three of the most wanted pokemon of gen VIII on the wall where anyone can see them passing by?

  3. The water fakemon looks like a water version of Phantump so to me it should become Water/Ghost. The fire pony looks like Keldeo and the grass cub i must has!

  4. Thanks for the article PJ! I wasn’t aware that they originated on a Chinese forum, can anyone confirm this? Unless you’re referring to 4chan, which I don’t think you are.

  5. If these do in fact turn out real and it is just becasue GF was lazy in fixing their grammar I’ll be flabbergasted. It’s an easy fix so idk why they’d go through all the trouble of hanging them up without fixing it first. The text is just as important as it’s meant to describe what is going on and what details the designers should be focusing on.

  6. Love these starters. Not sure which I would pick if they somehow turned out real. That said I refuse to say they are real/fake. Last time I joined a fake camp the alola starter evos leaked out months in advance lol

    • Funny enough I was also on team fake that time as well. I wasn’t as hard line back then because there wasn’t anything too glaringly wrong with them other than being blurry, but this time I’m pretty positive. I’ll e more than willing to eat my own words tho if the time comes and these are in fact the real deal.

      • One thing is for sure if these end in real the coral is way out of the left field lol that is something I would have never thought of for a starter even if it’s fake I have to give props to the creator! That said if they are fake I am so curious to see what the actual starters are!

        • Yeah the coral one is certainly an interesting design. If real it’ll definitely be a departure from the normal water starters. If they’re fake then we have one hell of an artist out there and I kind of hope they end up posting the mid and final stages of the lines too haha

          • Yeah I want to see the middle and final evos too if they turn out fake lol if real I would prefer to wait until I play the game! Hopefully we know for sure in next few months!

    • Basically what she’s saying is that the starters will be based on those 3 concepts of time. The part she’s not sure about is whether they line up directly with those typings or not. The theme is correct, but not necessarily the order. Also it’s hard to know what it means without actually seeing them or any part of the game. It could be story related or it could be specifically what the starters look like that’s related to the them. It’s hard to know.

  7. Wow, I’m more shocked at the response to these than the leaks themselves. Honestly, I kinda thought everyone would be against these, but they seem to be popular. For me, I hope they’re fake because the bear is the only appealing one to me.

    • I noticed something else- the thing that makes them look the most real to me is the bear’s hear design. That seems like a very Pokemon thing to do, but the typing doesn’t really fit.

  8. If these turn out fake I swear to god if everyone ruins the reveal of the actual ones by complaining about them and comparing them to these I’ll be pissed……You can like these (I acutely love them), but if they’re fake that shouldn’t start the storm of people saying the real ones aren’t good……

    Reply
    • They will and you know it. People did it for the last ones and especially for Kalos starter evos. Personally I may well compare them but I won’t be complaining about it much if at all knowing it won’t change anything.

      Reply
        • Well you can try to ignore it, it’s unfortunately what always happens. It won’t be just with these though it’ll be with other fakemon and ‘leaks’ as well. Then there’ll be the ‘but I wanted this…’ but really you can’t blame people for those.

    • They will sadly. People got their hopes up with fan made evos of fennekin and litten in particular and complained when the actual evos were revealed because it didn’t go the way the fan made ones went.

    • I think them leaving it at that is very telling. It basically says that they are still trying to get it out this year, but if it misses its mark then so be it. They don’t want to mislead their investors so if it was meant to come out next year in general they’d just be straight forward with them. I’m still pretty positive that December will be the month. It makes the most sense with everything we’eve seen and heard. Plus the “2018 or later” part could indicate that they know that if the game is delayed just one month that it’ll have to come out in 2019 making it technically not a 2018 release. It just makes too much sense.

      • I think it’s quite safe to predict that the game will come out between November 2018 and April 2019. The fiscal year of Nintendo goes from April to April, they have 20 milions switch to sell until April and I’m quite positive that the game will not be released after that month, cause, let’s be honest, only pokemon can make them reach that numbers, not metroid not anything else.

        • Yeah I can agree with that. There’s no way they’ll stretch gen 7 to fall of next year. Even summer would be pushing it

          Reply
    • Imo this means two things:
      1) Pokemon is going to come out next year but Nintendo keeps listing it 2018 or later so people may think it will come out this year and buy the switch for it.
      2) They are really trying to have the game finished for 2018.

      • Likely number 2. This is from their investors meetings. They may keep us in the dark and tease in general ways, but investors need to know these things. If they lie to investors they risk losing money and support.

          • Yup and since new rumors are backing up that guys claim about Bandai Namco helping with the production of Metroid Prime 4 that adds a new layer of credibility to his claims of the Pokemon Switch game coming this year

          • Imo Nintendo cannot really push them to do it. What’s important here is to believe or not that the games were started in march 2017. I mean they may not want to say that but it’s clear that masuda left s/m and sequels to Ohmori to start the Switch project. Pokemon on switch has being developped for at least two years now imo. When the game was announced at E3 they also revealed that game would have been released in a year or something more, if they had just started it I don’t think they could have said that..The fact is that not even Nintendo was expecting the Switch to sell so well so I think it’s more safe to say that they are hoping GF will finish the game as soon as possible.

  9. I was very excited clicking on this article, and I’m not disappointed. I think, like the 7th Gen final evos, these will turn out to be real. Something tells me that this is too good to be faked, but the “off” Japanese may turn out to be the biggest hole in this theory. Time will tell!

    • Funny thing is when the final evos leaked in gen 7 people pointed out inconsistencies in the Japanese and look how that turned out lol exactly why I am not for sure calling these real/fake

    • The bear on its own is just so smart and so Game Freak. Now that I’ve seen it I can’t stop thinking about it because it’s just so cool. The same goes for the horse if the flint concept is true…maybe a bit less for the coral but it looks like it can grow its antennae back which could be funny. All in all, these designs are based around thought-out gimmicks rather than the designs themselves.

      • That’s the main thing I am thinking. They all seem like something gamefreak would do! Would love it if they turned out real

      • I just got that the spots on the bear face are made that way so at dark when they glow it looks like a scary face. Now that cave thing has a sense for me too… XD

  10. Can I say something? Why on earth should always be the water starter to take the freak spot? I mean, they have always had great evolutions but the first stage is always considered a freak at the beginning. Oshawott was just hated, Froakie was weird, Popplio was dumb…Now this, which is cool like the other water starters imo but you can barely understand what it is at first glance,,,
