Pokémon Crystal Now Available on eShop

Pokémon Crystal, first released in English in 2001, is now available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop in some regions and will continue to roll out globally as January 26th arrives in different countries.

For the first time ever English speakers will be able to access the special GS Ball mini-event which ends with the player encountering a level 30 Celebi in Ilex Forest. Whether or not you’re motivated by Celebi or pure nostalgia, the game retails for $9.99. Don’t forget that this landmark game was the first to introduce players to a choice of gender when starting the game, animated sprites when entering a battle and was the first game to add the challenging Battle Tower gauntlet.

We have some QUESTIONS for our readers who are planning to play which you can answer in the comments below:

  • What Pokémon are you thinking of using?
  • Do you think your play-through will differ from when you originally played the game?
  • What is your favorite animated Pokémon sprite in Crystal?

Good luck trainers!

  1. I’m reading a book using old Polish and in old Polish ”Rad” meant happy, each time someone say ”Jestem (I’m) Rad” my brain thinks of Star

  2. I think part of what makes X and Y so bland is that nothing is polished. It all feels a bit unfinished like they were reallly close to finishing it then just released it before they could.

Hell like, there are no idle animations for any trainers in the game

  3. Up to the league in Uranium, looks like I am really underleveled and they use items and don’t allow the use of the bag so guess I need to do some leveling up.

      • Luxelong, Theriamp, Herolune, Villucard, Glavinug and Pajay. I bred Luxelong and Theriamp because I got some in WT so thought I might as well. Theriamp with Energizate is pretty much my most powerful.

          • It shows what a good type combo Electric/rock can actually be. I also wanted a Megatherium Pokemon for ages so had to try it. Luxelong is a rabbit dragon so that was obvious. Pajay I caught and happened to have Hidden Power Fighting which has been so useful. Villucard with its’ Blood Lust+Shell Bell+Drain life is great and I got a Naughty one which I liked thematically.

  4. So does anybody believe we could get Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald on the Virtual Console in the future? I know there aren’t any GBA games on the 3DS eShop, but I’ve had them on my system for over 5 years because of the Ambassador program. Maybe it’s more likely to happen on the Switch?

    • I think Switch if anything. ORAS are still recent enough that it would likely be next year earliest. Also they’ll do R/S first then Emerald because otherwise everyone will just get Emerald. It then would open the question of if they’d do FRLG. I would have liked HGSS but who knows really.

      • That’s a good point, remakes sort of throw a wrench in things. However, I could still see them bringing RSE and FRLG as the absolute final 3DS Pokemon games before Pokemon Switch in 2019. I would say maybe August for RS, then November for Emerald, and maybe February for FRLG to coincide with the anniversary. Then Pokemon could come out in April or something.

    • I believe so but I’m really looking forward to Leaf Green and Fire Red, for some reason I’ve always loved the Sevii Islands and it sucks that we haven’t made a return to them yet.😔
