FAKE: First Alleged Gen VIII Details Surface

REMINDER: We discuss rumors not to pass them off as fake news confirmed information, but to stimulate discussion and highlight possibilities. Never treat this or share this as fact, because it is entirely unconfirmed information which may or may not be true.

The next main Pokémon title has already been confirmed to be a Nintendo Switch game, but not much else is officially known at this point. This hasn’t stopped some Chinese sources from sharing potential information about the game though. Our intrepid rumor reporter PokéSirena (you can follow her on Twitter) has helped us track down and translate the latest online gossip. These are from some of the same people who knew about Rainbow Rocket before it was revealed which is why we’ve taken particular note.

  • The Chinese localization team has already finished translating the games’ script
  • There will be no new Mega Evolutions introduced in the new games
  • Z-Moves return and now use motion control to activate using the Joy-Cons
  • Central plot revolves around the conflict between tradition and innovation
  • Region inspiration has been rumored to be Spain or Italy
  • Release to come late 2018 (~December) or early 2019

These details pale in comparison to what has also been said though, and that is the games feature a new, simplified battle system which has been compared to that of the Digimon World games. For those not familiar with them they use a real-time battle style in which moves are still selected via menu and include the option to attack or block moves from your opponent. It has also been compared to the battle system of Pokkén Tournament in which moves are either attacks, blocks or grabs and work in a rock-scissors-paper fashion.

If the above were to be true it would certainly be a change for longtime Trainers and could have the potential to disrupt the deep strategy game competitive players love.

What do you think?

      Party (Potentially Unfinished):Lucario, Incineroar
Bio(I’ll probably unintentionally include unnecessary stuff, so forgive me if I do):An average kid who lived a pretty normal life at first, Alex’s life took a turn for the less normal when he and his friend (Sam) were transported to the world of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon to fight off a great evil (name undecided). After that, he gained the ability to travel between his world and the Pokemon world through a special Poke Ball looking device. Through that, he met 3 people who would eventually become his friends and formed a group with them and Sam. Later on, after defeating another great evil (name also undecided), they decided to part ways to adjust back into their normal lives. After the 3 years had passed, Alex eventually gained the power to harness aura outside of his Lucario form (A bit late to bring that up, I know), and gained tremendous power through it. His main form of attacking is through punches and shooting blasts of aura through his index fingers.
That’s all I can think of. Might add more later

        “What the hell?”
        “That’s not good.”
“It’s like I’m living out an anime.”
        And here’s a semi-long one:
“I don’t care how many bones you break… I don’t care how many organs you damage… I don’t care how many times you knock me down! You may call this a lot of things: “Foolishness, naivete, stubbornness. But I call it persistence. The persistence to kill you. The only one… the only one who’s gonna die here… IS YOU!!”
        That probably needs some tweaking

  1. So as a follow up about that Tieba rumor of a new Kanto game the person on Bulbagarden that was a known leaker said that they’re acquainted with an admin on there. So they can confirm that the person who deleted the thread wasn’t the original poster, but was in fact another admin. Said admin who deleted the trhead also apparently has ties with an inner circle of leakers. I guess the “famous Chinese leaks” from SM were actually deleted by that admin even. So it’s highly suspicious they’d delete the Kanto thread. I have a few thoughts on all this

So what if most if not all the rumors are in fact real? What if we do return to Kanto, but it’s not the Kanto we know from past games? I was thinking that maybe we’re really about to witness a sort of reboot. What if we do return to Kanto, but this time the dex has been expanded with brand new Pokemon and features a brand new story to fit with the new graphics and modern times. That would technically make it a brand new gen and a return to Kanto all in one game. It would certainly explain why some rumors say it’s a new gen while others say a Kanto remake of some kind. It would also explain why GF seems to be making USUM out as an end of an era game rather than just the end of the 3ds games like BW2 was. Otherwise why would they say it was the culmination of the last 20 years? Those words seem suspicious if the next game is just business as usual. In any event whatever we get next will be interesting and certainly not what anyone expects. Exciting times are ahead.

    • Not sure how I would feel about returning to kanto again. But if it’s completely different with plenty of new Pokémon I guess I could handle it

      Reply
      • I feel like the major problem people have with Kanto now a days is not that Kanto itself has been everywhere, but that the general 1st gen has encroached on many other gens. If they had only stuck to minor hints and nods then it would have been fine, but doing stuff like giving out the Kanto starters in XY was a bit much. Other than than Kanto itself hasn’t been in much spotlight recently. With he exception of the VC releases we haven’t gone to a newly revamped Kanto with it’s own story in a VERY long time. Could be interesting to see it in full 3d and a new story.

        Reply
        • That is pretty much my main issue with kanto. It has gotten way too much attention the past few gens. Getting kanto starters in x and y as you said. Then the whole alolan forms only being for gen one Pokémon :/ overall a return to the region itself wouldn’t bother me too much. Just give me plenty of new Pokémon is all I ask for.

  2. I am so curious what they will do for the starters in gen 8. Can definitely say I never expected to actually get a grass owl like rowlet lol personally I am hoping that we get a water platypus or elephant! Fire if they continue loosely following the Chinese zodiac rabbit or snake. Grass I am not sure ? deer maybe? Lemur?

    Reply
    • Well if the hints are there and just maybe they are there (and assuming my theory isn’t totally correct) the starters may end up being a Tanuki, Ram/goat, and a wolf.

        • While he hasn’t outright stated it as being a part of the info he has on gen 8, a while ago a guy named GekkougaLarry on Twitter posted 3 pictures of those animals and said that he liked them. He definitely seems to have sources, but that one particular post may or may have anything to do with the gen 8 info he has. so take that with a grain of salt.

  3. So here’s a thought. Say we do go back to Kanto in the form of a reboot. Would be pretty interesting if the starters were different. Gen 8 will definitely have all new Pokemon regardless of where it’s set. If we go back to Kanto and it has new Pokemon I could totally see us getting a new set of starters in a reboot. Would make them giving us the “original” three starters in XY and then in the VC releases be more sensible. Otherwise why would they have even bothered if we were gonna get them again later on?

    Reply
      • True, but they don’t have control over that. It’s still them making the 3 starters available in a more modern set of games. All they can do is make them available. If some people don’t play them then that’s their loss.

        Reply
          • That’s also a fair point. Either way they seem to be flooding us with opportunities to get the original starters and for no real reason either. at this point most if not everyone has access to them in some form or another. Doesn’t make much sense to keep doing special things for them unless the next games won’t feature them at all or very little.

          • Gen 1 nostalgia though. They are also very recognisable for the brand, not on Pikachus’ level but alot of people will know what they are even if they don’t know the names.

          • This could work^ maybe it’s set in an alternate kanto with different starters. Maybe the professor oak we know falls into this kanto from a wormhole or something post game gives us a kanto starter for helping him get back?

          • Maybe it’s in the future a bit and Blue is now the Professor, Prof.Oak is chilling with Samson Oak on a beach and just throws the starters at you when you approach him. Or they could link with wormholes, if they are even continuing that part of the lore.

          • That could work too. An adult blue as the professor. Doesn’t mention professor oak all game making everyone think he’s dead. Then you find him chilling on a beach lol

      • We shall see. My theory may be way out there, but I’ve been speculating a return to Kanto for some time now and the stars definitely seem to be aligning recently.

        Reply
      • This wouldn’t be a call back tho. It’d be essentially a reboot. We haven’t actually visited Kanto in almost a decade and Kanto has never gotten any expansions or additional areas. (Sevi Islands don’t count as they’re not directly attached to Kanto) Also there have been call backs to Kanto in almost every game so your point isn’t really saying much.

    • Redefine the battle system maybe it just means redefine the GUI as we won’t have 2 screens anymore… so I expect something more in than direction than big game mechanic changes.
I think their effort will be focused more in creating an adventure close to the Zelda Breath of The Wild rather than changing the whole battling system. I expect of course changes in there but not big ones.

      Reply
    • I guess a refined battle system could be as there aren’t dual screens, if you want to make a move in a battle, you hold down a button then using a direction for the four moves?
I think it will still be turned based as all of the side games are ones for changing up the battle system – conquest, ranger, dungeon, Pokken

    • They should release a lighter and more compact version of Switch for the children… it is heavy even for my hands… otherwise forget about children playing it in the outside.
I calculate that will happen in 2019.

      Reply
      • Im pretty sure they made it as compact/light as possible for the hardware it contains. Making a new compact/light version would simply hinder development of games on a console that is already underpowered in terms of hardware. Also, its like slightly heavier than a 3ds to the point where you barely notice the difference.

To add on, if you take off the joycons, itss the exact same size as a 3ds.

        Reply
        • But that’s the thing, you can make it lighter by removing some of it.

For example, if it’s handheld only you don’t need the Bluetooth/the Joycon rails and all that that entails. You also don’t need anything that makes it upclock, since it’ll be primarily used for handheld (though since it uses USB-C it’ll still be able to do video out with an extension from the dock, this variant would obviously be told to ignore trying to upclock).

Of course being smaller in general would also remove some of the weight of the system in the materials used to make it up (especially the metal on the rails).

A smaller, dockless, handheld only version (for at LEAST the price of the New 3DS XL to assuage the poorer and cheaper people) is almost certainly doable without affecting performance.

And all this would do is hinder devs who are already screwing up by not taking the handheld format into account and porting appropriately, and those people should be hindered from putting a game on a platform that’s really a handheld with video out and upclocking so that’s okay.

          Reply
      • Probably, eventually.

Switch really should do 3 things before worrying about improving the base hardware:

        > dual screen version
        > cheap version
        > booster adaptor

I’d even add a 4G version. I think it is still dumb to do it the way Vita did it, but more than ever, needing a constant connection will be important, and what GPS could bring to (console) gaming is a lot. However, that type of support should be a slotted attachment that relies on a pay as you go format for primary marketing, attaching it to an account on the secondary. This way kids and teens could easily take advantage as they buy or have things like Data cards purchased for them. But I think that only works going forwards in new hardware, or they’d have to release a broadcasting device accessory as an adaptor (which also can work but makes things less portable).

        —
That said, Dual Screen version, proportionally the size of the regular 3DS, but have sliding slots for taking the standard joypad controllers. Both screens as touch screens, and the ability to slide the top screen down (in addition to clam-shell closed) to be a one-screened micro handheld. Then give it an improved camera (I say just a nice old cell phone camera could be nice, one with flash, some auto-focus, maybe 8MP and maybe some 2-5x zoom… just depending on price) and a stylus that works with the new kind of screen. Start the price around $250 – 199, and release possibly over the summer or early fall in time for games like Animal Crossing, Mario Maker 2, and Pokemon.

Why Dual Screens? It’s better for some games. We don’t have to worry about interface downgrades for the titles I spoke of, and future games like Xenoblade 2 won’t get criticized for a crowded interface. This could be a portable-only model, maybe come with a small extra bit of ram for more OS stuff for more portable comforts, possibly the same or less system storage, and upgrade all switch hardware to get new more portable specific software and apps like Streetpass 2.0. Also set the system up to be able to easier take mobile android based games, and rebrand them as “pocket” sized games, along with things like VC games of portable system games (or possible 3DS eShop titles).

For a Cheaper version, I think redesign the WiiU gamepad in the style of the Switch. Have it as a device that can stream content from a switch, target the price from $100-150, update switch consoles such that some small games can be played at the same time (such as these “pocket” titles that are limited to how much hardware they can use) and also let it function as a screened pro-controller (possibly being able to connect two of these devices to one switch). Now you have a superior WiiU product that not only can function similar to the WiiU (making ports of games like Xenoblade easier as well as bring dual screened gaming to older Switches in console mode), but can do such on the go in portable mode, but also function as a second controller with a private screen, as well as a console that is more disposable than the base switch.

Why this way for a cheaper system? The processing units and internal components of the Switch aren’t going to get cheap fast enough, and eventually Switch will loose pace as family won’t be able to afford each child a system (It will start to sell as a shared product like a home console). Possibly it could also save money in production by also including the dual screened model’s smaller single screen and possibly camera (for any feature parody). This can be that solution, with more included hardware components than the base gamepad, but made slimer and cheaper. However, it also would have a bonus of selling to every switch customer, unlike the 2DS as a budget solution as it extends multiplayer (so you no longer need to play side by side) and brings options of dual screened gaming.

Finally, a booster adaptor, because the thing about the idea of improving the base model of the Switch in 2019, 2020, is that you aren’t going to see that big a jump to get that same form factor and size of the switch, but the price will greatly increase. I don’t know people will be willing to spend $400-500 just to play PS4 games in 1080p in console mode at 30FPS or even 60FPS. You are better off selling the concept in piecemeal, you might be able to get even more out of it.

What they should instead do is redesign the Dock. Many people won’t throw away their old docks, they can still be set to other TVs and such, but they can make a new Dock, have it be a bit bigger, and add additional components of a secondary more powerful GPU with a custom CPU that can run in tangent with the base Switch model’s and give it additional ram to at least double the total, if not a bit more than even that (to allow for extra OS features). The dock could also include some space for a portable HDD (or two) to be slotted internally like a N64 cartridge, and have some advanced wireless features that allow it to do processing for switches connected wirelessly (also letting you use the base switch model as a second screen controller for those such games). You could also decide if you want to include a game card slot and joypad set to allow it to be used as a pure home console.

This would not include the extra basic dock or a screen or internal battery which would save production cost and should allow it to be price ranged for $200-250. Now, if Nintendo choose to, they could release this in 2019, timed for the fall after the dual screened version and the budget second screened controller release, and sell it as a stand alone (for the aforementioned price) or as a dual-pack with the standard Switch for around $450-500. A hardware objective to sell the dual pack could be that when the switch is docked, it could run games at 1080p (or 1440p) 60FPS, as well as offer multiplayer experiences for a VR visor attachment (With that, you can plug in the console for power and processing, but it uses its own microscreens for display, gyroscope, accelerometer, and has a 3D 8MP camera with a secondary 3D IR or dot array camera for augmented game designs. That in of itself can aim for a $80 price point or $150 if it includes a game (something like Star Fox VR or something)).

  6. Today’s Komala episode was extremely fillery but we learn that if you face off against Komala it will always have +5 Plot Armor and never lose

      • Its not that fillery but its a slice of life anime, so it will never be as action packed as regular shounen (like the previous seasons)

        • Ah. That sucks as I really liked their non-filler episodes and really I dislike that entire concept of school. Hopefully there won’t be any excuse in Gen 8 to be completely filler.
