  1. Happy August folks! By the end of this month, I will have begun to settle into community college…that’s a terrifying and exciting thought. We’ll most likely get Pokémon news this month, but with the end of the year approaching, I’m wondering when that Animal Crossing app will be revealed (as well as how). A Direct? A press release? And how long will they wait to release it?

    Reply
    • good luck with school! College really isn’t all that terrifying once you get into it. Just make sure to keep up with whatever work you have and you’ll do great. I’d be willing to bet we get Pokemon news sometime in the next week. With the 10th being the reveal day for that toy line I think they’ll show off whatever it is in official capacity before then.

      • Thank you! I’m not too concerned because the difficulty should be way less than my high school. I almost thought that they might have a USUM Direct as soon as this week. It’s definitely about time, but I still don’t understand why they’re approaching news in this way. There already isn’t that much hype because of the Switch, so they should have been aggressive with marketing from the start.

        • Yeah. Honestly the amount of time they’ve been silent isn’t too out of the ordinary, but the lack of excitement for the games certainly is a problem for them. Especially if they really do end up being regular 3rd versions with nothing super crazy to offer.

    • I’m going to respond to my own comment because I can. I can’t believe I didn’t think about this before, but I bet they’re going to use Apple’s “iPhone Pro” event next month to announce it like they did with Super Mario Run. Maybe it’s not as high-profile, but the timing does make the most sense.

        • The rumored name of the iPhone 8 releasing this year, with a ton of new features like a screen over the entire front face (no home button/physical fingerprint scanner), double camera, etc. It’s going to be something else.

  4. Theory: if Eevee gets another evolution, seeing as its Z-Move is called Nine Evoli Boost and Eevee has eight evolutions, it’ll be its last.

And even then the nine could just be Eevee and its evos

        • Greaper is the final form of my Ghostly Pkm

          Spectini Ghost
          Ghostalker Ghost
          Greaper Ghost/Steel

Spectini a spectral Pokemon that has a habit of wandering endlessly until it finds a person it has the exact same aura and once it’s found it it will follow you until the end of your days (some reported them following infants)

Then as it evolves its stalking habits get much more aggressive that if the person it’s following tries to outrun it it will scream and chase it down

And finally after leveling up around 45 at night it becomes the harvester of souls, it hunts Pokemon with long sickle like claws, it has a coiled head that constricts and unfurls based on somebody’s life force

          • Sounds cool, got the creepiness down. Generally I like it tbh, unique from Dusknoir.

Mine is a complete 180, it’s a cute little hooded ghost who’s dedicated to reaping souls, but is generally bubbly and excitable. Hence why some spirits slip though. It has the ability Soul Custody which means that when it faints an opponent, it takes their stat boosts.

          • I mean they mean no harm (unless you try to get away from it) they just yearn for a companion that it shares that specific wavelength, it has the ability Ethereal Body which attacks that make contact a chance to miss

            And speaking of ghosts

Draghoul and Drequiem my Dragon/Ghost zombie dragons, these Pokemon are practically immortal and their bodies never heal from wounds or damage but they continue to live
Their only ability is Doom Stand where when fainted it has the ability to preform one last action for a solid turn but then faints afterwards

      • Yeah, I thought Ghost would be most helpful and doesn’t completely outclass False Swipe because Normal types are immune.

        Reply
    • We definitely need something like this. Even though Quick Balls are effective in some cases, it’s agonizing to try and catch a Shiny without having False Swipe available.

      Reply
      • Yeah, it’s generally useful to have False Swipe for SOS and Legends too, so one that can hit different types better/at all is something I’ve been wanting.

  7. Sun/Moon – Leaked 25th Feb, Revealed 26th Feb. No news revealed. Got info on the 10th of May. A drought of 74 days between reveal and first news, besides Magearna being revealed as Steel/Fairy.

    Reveal to Release: 266 days

Ultra Sun/Moon – Revealed 6th of June, no info as of today, 1st of August 2017. The ongoing drought has been 56 days. That’s 18 less than Sun and Moon’s.

    Reveal to Release: 164 days

Not only do we have shorter to wait from reveal to release, the drought still isn’t as bad SuMo’s, especially as we were way further from release.

‘But we’re unsure of what Ultr-‘ we were unsure about SuMo, a bunch of people for some reason thought it was Gen 6.5 or Kalos’ Johto. We’ve been told it’s an alternate story, and thus we’re being strongly pointed to the direction that it’s more of a retake than a continuation.

We know that it’s probably a third version or even a complete change of SuMo’s story based on the phrase ‘another/alternate story’. It could even be a sequel, however unlikely. But GameFreak knows that for most fans, the story isn’t purely what sells it to them.

The story might be amazing and make you want to get the game more or bad and make you want less, but GameFreak knows what ultimately sell is new features. Walking Pokemon, move tutors, new Alola Forms, new formes, etc.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a sequel, prequel, alternate timeline, or an in-game musical to celebrate Lillie, Queen of the Multiverse, because it’s the features that are gonna sell the game and they’re not gonna start spilling the beans when there isn’t as much beans to spill.

Could also be feedback to people bitching about how much the game was spoiled for them :v

    • What you left out is that the game comes out in 3 1/2 months. When we first got real SM info, launch was still a good 6 months away. They could wait longer because they had more of a time cushion. While it’s true that there’s less to reveal this time around, it’s not smart from a marketing perspective for the company to keep tight lips on the games after the reveal provoked some negative response. Of course they don’t have to reveal anything, heck, they could technically stay silent until release, but that doesn’t seem logical from their standpoint, at least to me.

As for that last statement, neither of the two poles is a good choice. On the SM hand, they ruined what they value most, surprise. On the USUM hand, keeping silent for this long has given ample time for people to form negative assumptions based on a rough first impression of the games. Just scroll a few comments down and you’ll see what I mean.

      • I did mention time to reveal for each of them to illustrate that USUM is coming out. In fact, my whole point is we’ve had less of a drought that SuMo and we have shorter to wait.

And it’s fairly obvious that the reason that USUM has been silent is because they won’t have as much to reveal. They probably revealed it without the info because they know how restless their fandom is, especially coming off of a 1 year break.

If they go for a SuMo style schedule, 3 1/2 months will be ample time to release info for a third version. It’s no reason to panic and boycott the game because they’re now used to being spoiled.

BW2 were also revealed closer to release than normal, also had a fairly similar drought, and probably, to be honest, brought similar doubts. However, despite having worse sales, they’re regarded as great games full of content.

        Reply
        • The fanbase can be quite impatient, myself included. I’ll give you that. And of course it’s plenty of time to reveal enough information. They could do it with a day until release. But my point isn’t that they can’t, it’s that they shouldn’t. You don’t exactly have to go on a magical quest to find that a large chunk of consumers are frustrated with the game as it stands and are jumping to unfair conclusions about USUM. However, much of that is derived from mass confusion. Let’s see here, they announce a pokemon direct that’s six minutes long, and tack on a new game “reveal” at the end of a 3 minute trailer for a game that’s been out for over a year. They proceed to talk about the game for twenty seconds with ambiguous wording about nearly every point, then say “stay tuned!” and go silent for two months. My point is, the drought itself isn’t the problem. The problem comes when a two month drought proceeds and rough announcement that left everyone confused.

Maybe I’m just looking for a place to project my impatience onto, but from a marketing perspective, it’s a terrible decision. First impressions matter.

          Reply
          • I do agree the actual reveal could’ve been a million times better. That teaser should’ve been by itself if they were going to do a teaser at all. But it’s still more info than we got for other game reveals such as BW2 and SuMo, which had very large draughts. At least they gave more info than they usually do, because we rarely get jack and shit. We’ve had tiny nuggets to speculate off of rather than nothing – which has lead to really cool theories like the Broken Akala theory, which would’ve been impossible with the standard ‘dump the titles and fuck off’ approach.

Yes, this is subpar marketing. But people are severely overestimating what this means. BW2 sold shit for Pokemon games, but are extremely well received. And it still sold well and is a Pokemon game, so its not like a bad sale will cause the franchise to fail or decline in quality.

          • I completely agree with you on that last paragraph.

I know we got some footage and all, but it’s all of the variables compounded together that make it a bad decision. But by that last paragraph, it seems we’ve already agreed on that.

          • Yup, defo agree it’s shitty marketing and GameFreak needs to wise up, but I’m pretty much doing damage control like this fandom does every time because I know that unless GameFreak becomes totally fucking incompetent at least some people are gonna like USUM regardless of what they said before

    • Uhh no. We knew what Sun and Moon was at least better than USUM

It was pretty obvious that Sun and Moon was a new generation because of how they revealed it. 20 years of Pokémon, all the games, concept art. But with Ultra Sun and Moon, it could be a platinum version, sequels, alternate universe or something else entirely. It’s so infuriating

      Reply
      • Take yourself to online Web forums like Serebii and Bulbagarden, dig back to 2016, see all the arguments over whether SuMo was related to XY at all or not, and whether it was a ‘.5’ Gen or a completely new Gen. At least we know USUM is connected to SuMo.

If it was a sequel, they would’ve said sequel. I might be wrong but to me the phrase ‘another’ and clips of things not in SuMo make it seem like it’s going to be an alternate take, not a sequel.

        Reply
        • Sun and Moon being related to Kalos is vastly different.

Sun and Moon was: It’s probably a new gen but it could be a Kalos sequel

USUM is: It could be a third version, sequel, or alternate universe.

And again, that’s all up to interpretation. The new flowers could mean a sequel in a more developed Alola, or it could be a third version like how Platinum vastly changed many areas making them prettier.

Those Lycanrock and Mimikyu things could be cutscenes, Z-Moves or Trials and if it’s new trials it could be a sequel or an AU

No one knows what the hell the games are. Sun and Moon were pretty obvious. They weren’t up to debate as much

          Reply
          • SuMo were not obvious at all lol. The debates were worse than SuMo was, because people didn’t know what the region was based on, what the mascots would be (I even heard people suggest the Mega Charizards as mascots!!!) and we just came off of a full Gen with tons of insane unanswered questions.

Whereas we know that USUM is probably an alternate take on the story of USUM (alternate universe and third version are pretty much the same concept, just different in how drastic they are)

          • Speaking of unanswered questions in SM, I better get some context here GF.

            What really is Type: Null?
What’s the deal with Necrozma? (This one’s a given)
Why are there so many unused locations?
Why is Tapu Village in ruins?
            What happened to Poni island?
and please, for the love of arceus,
            EXPLAIN THE ULTRA BEASTS

Oh, and also explore tapu lore some more.

          • Wait really? (the tapu village stuff I mean. I know Type: Null is an ultra beast killer but it wasn’t fleshed out well. What is it a fusion of? Who created it? Why is there one in sinnoh? RKS system?)

          • Tapu Village: they put a supermarket in sacred land, Bulu destroyed the whole village in retaliation.

Fusion: Cells. The documents at the Aether Foundation say that it’s cells used to give it access to all types, so it’s probably just an artifically made organic body or a chimera of body parts or like cells implanted into an embryo or something. (which GameFreak probably wouldn’t of wanted to mention in case peeps get angry over frankenstein mon)

Sinnoh:??? There was never one in Sinnoh. They went to Sinnoh to research the myths on Arceus to work on inspiration of type changing.

RKS: the memories probably activate the different type cells in Silvally, hence the name ‘memory’. It was most likely installed to be able to adapt to fighting Beasts any time.

Creator: Faba. It’s all in secret Lab A in Aether Paradise.

        • To support your point, even Serebii labelled them under “6.5?” for a few days.

Though, in retrospect it was pretty clear, since they went through all the generations in the reveal trailer.

          Reply
          • Even then tho, that could’ve been taken as a thing for the anniversary rather than for. A totally new Gen.

        • People thought that SM was a related to Gen 6? Didn’t we saw in the reveal trailer a Pokecenter that was completely different from Kalos’, thus suggesting that is a different gen? lol

          Reply
          • Poké fans are weird lol. People thought the region was Southern France and it’d just be southern Kalos. I did mention other people thought it was like Johto, as in a new region with an old region taped on for sales in a new gen

          • Omg the games are Called Sun and Moon and not Triangular X and hardy Y or XYZ or something like that lol

          • Ok yeah, but I was arguing about the people who thought that SM was XY sequel. I already mentioned the two region argument in a previous comment :p

          • XY had a lot of references to the Sun. Sundial, Parfum Garden, Lysandre. NPC asked if a moondial exists, another mentions a group of people who weren’t team skull interested in the legendaries.

Kalos doesn’t include much of southern France so people thought the new ‘region’ was just part of Kalos.

The logic for the name connection was that you can use XYZ to place celestial bodies’ positions and shit, I never believed tbh

          • Ah. But I doubt they’d change the name just for a few references here and there. And the southern part… since when the regions had to include the whole Country/Area/State

  8. “. . .featuring pokemon that didn’t appear in the original versions.”
    – Masuda, during the June direct

Pretty sure this just means old pokemon not in the SM alola dex, as I don’t want to get my hopes up. However, technically all 802 pokemon can appear in SM, an the wording is quite suspicious.

  9. Pokémon BW2
    Revealed: 26 Feb 2012
    Released: 23 Jun 2012
Reveal to Release: 118 Days (over a month less than USUM)
Reveal to First Big News*: 48 days (only 10 less days than USUM’s current drought)
    FBN to Release: 70 Days

BW2 got their first big news town months and a third before their release. Granted BW2’s reveal and release were closer, but if anything that’s worse because it gives you less time to prepare for them and have GameFreak less promotion time.

*We were told about Black and White Kyurem, but that’s it. We didn’t even get a release date revealed for BW2 for the first few months.

    Reply
    • I don’t know if the reactions are similar to USUM or what, but just because they made a similar decision a few years ago doesn’t mean it’s a good choice in their current market. Stop trying to justify their marketing incompetence.

      Reply
    • Yeah I think people are freaking out about the lack of news for no reason. I’m more concerned about the nature of the games rather than how much pre-released info we get.

      Reply
      • I think the fear mostly comes from them being silent. Like, the games are not so good so they try to hide that fact and prepare for a very short advertising cycle so the negativity does not completely burn the game out. But seems like it might be backfiring whether the games are good or not.

        Reply
        • If the game was total trash, why would they even release it when they’ve been working on PokeSwitch? They’ve taken gaps before and if they were really shitting themselves about it being bad they could’ve just made a third version with a battle facilities or something and the fandom would coo over it

          Reply
          • Nobody knows how these things are negotiated. Maybe Nintendo wanted some 3DS games still the ride out the console and ordered GF to produce some new games on a tight budget and time schedule.

          • Then why wouldn’t they just jazz up Sun and Moon and slap on some post game stuff rather than going for the ‘alternate story’ thing that means they appear to be changing up more (like us having an Ula’ula Z-Ring and the cutscenes with multiple Pokemon)

Inb4 USUM are just what I described lol

  10. The more I think about it, the more I realize that USUM will probably sell terribly.

    – Third Versions always sell less
    – Tiny tiny window to get people hyped (Sun and Moon had 8 months, USUM has 5 months. Or actually 4 since they wasted a month)
    – Many people will just wait until Pokémon Switch instead of buying an extremely similar game for an outdated system

    Reply
    • For a pokemon game? Yeah. For a game in general though? Nope, they’re pokemon games. They’ll sell like hotcakes, even if GF makes Pokemon Yes and No, marks them up to 100 bucks a piece, and releases them on the GBA.

Having “Pokemon” in the title is a huge cushion for them.

      Reply
      • However on a more positive note, sales aren’t really what we care about. Emerald and Platinum didn’t sell that well yet they’re considered to be some of the best games. BW2 is widely considered better and sold worse than BW.

        Reply
    • Tbh, why do people here care so much about the sales? Pokemon always sells millions, so it’s not like the franchise is going to crash and burn if they dip a bit. It’s the quality that matters imo.

Black 2 and White 2 had a shorter timeframe to hype, didn’t have any new gimmicks like Megas, Alolans or Z-Moves they could adf mid Gen, and didn’t come out straight after Pokemon GO and other anniversary promotion that put Pokemon back into the limelight.

      Reply
      • It’s the precedent. Video Game industry people are very stupid when it comes to figuring out why games don’t sell.

Notice how much content was packed into B2W2? Then it selled trash. So they figured no one cares about crazy post game stuff which isn’t true

        Reply
        • Gold and Silver sold amazing with a large post game but less than Red and Blue then we got Ruby and Sapphire which had trash post game.

You can apply that to any dip in the franchise.

          Reply
        • I fear what might happen if USUM is similar. Great games (yay), but bad sales (boo). We already know GF is very fragile when it comes to extra content. If games that go above and beyond sell poorly, it might be the nail in the coffin.

          Reply
      • Share- and stakeholders in a company decide otherwise though. It’s all about relative performance, and if something underperforms you can be sure there will be people fired or replaced at top positions.

        Reply
  11. My main hope for USUM is that it’s actually worth buying. Since it’s reveal I’ve been concerned that it’s just SM with a new coat of paint. If it has a decent story change up and has a bunch of features that SM didn’t have then maybe it’ll be worth it, but if it’s just SM with Necrozma shoehorned idk about that……

    Reply
    • Yeah no one wants third versions ever since they did B2W2 so hopefully they’re in touch with their fanbase. But who am I kidding? They never fucking are

      Reply
    • Oh come on, it’s pokemon. All of us here will buy it no matter what. Even the “re-skins” are considered fantastic games.

That being said, since we know virtually nothing, I fear that USUM may have been an afterthought to pad the 3DS’ line-up as well as calm the fans until Pokemon SW.

      Reply
      • The problem is that the other 3rd versions weren’t released a year after their original games. If USUM is just SM but with minor changes then what was the point of playing SM in the first place? It made sense for the others as there was enough time between the games that it felt ok to release an updated version of the games. This time it’s just feel like a middle finger to the face

        Reply
        • And this here is EXACTLY my point. You’re confused about what the games are, which has provoked a negative reaction and assumptions about the game. I rest my case.

(Sorry for using you as evidence, but I saw my chance. xD)

          Reply
          • It’s…….Fine……….listen I understand my confusion. I’m willing to keep an open mind until we actually get info, but what the actual games end up being is a huge deal. It could make or brake them

          • Sorry if my response was a bit out of the blue. It’s nothing against you, I know a lot of fans are confused (heck, I am too. It’s fair to say we all are), but when false assumptions start to emerge, that’s when their “strategy” backfires.

And I totally get what you’re saying. Since they haven’t revealed anything, it does raise the question of whether or not they have that much to reveal.

          • It’s fine no offense taken. Anyway again I’d say it’s the impression they gave us in the first trailer that’s more concerning than the lack of news. BW2 had basically 2 maybe 3 months max of actual news before it came out. So saying that we won’t get a lot in the game because of such a small pre-release period a bit silly.

          • Yeah really the issue lies with Gamefreak NOT communicating what we should be expecting. Speculation is only fun when we have something to go on

      • If I had to guess, I would say that USUM is just padding until they can put out the Switch version. So I’m gonna guess that they may not even be that updated :/

        Reply
        • I’m not sure they need padding like that tho. It’s not like they’ve never taken a year off before. They can do whatever they like honestly. If you concider every non first game of each gen as padding then there’s no point in having them at all. They all have their own places for better or worse. That’s just my opinion tho lol

  12. Do you guys think the starters will get anything new at all in USUM? Like even just new animations like the starters in BW2?
