Pokémon GO Announces Raid Battles & Overhauled Gyms

Pokémon GO will temporarily be closing gyms across the world, but exciting new features are coming to the game soon. You can read the official update below and also check out the blog post for pictures!

New Gym Features and Updates: Starting soon, Gyms are undergoing a major facelift. You’ll soon be able to spin the Photo Disc at Gyms to acquire items just as you do at PokéStops—but that’s only the beginning. More updates to Gym battles are also just around the corner. Gyms are no longer based on Prestige and training. Instead, they now feature six permanent slots that can be filled by the controlling team’s Pokémon. Each Pokémon assigned to these slots must be unique. For example, only one Blissey can be assigned to a Gym at a time. In addition, opposing teams will battle the Pokémon in the order they were assigned to the Gym.

At the heart of the update is a new motivation system that will significantly change how you interact with Gyms. When a Pokémon is assigned to a Gym, a motivation meter will be displayed. Pokémon assigned to defend a Gym lose motivation over time and as they are defeated in battle. As a Pokémon loses motivation, its CP will temporarily decrease, making it easier for opposing teams to defeat. To help keep the Pokémon motivated and in tip-top shape for their next battle, Trainers can treat their team’s Pokémon to some Berries, which restore their motivation. If a Pokémon loses all motivation, it will leave the Gym and return to its Trainer the next time it loses a battle, so you’ll want to keep your team’s Pokémon motivated by giving them Berries frequently!

Gym Badges: Now you’ll be able to earn Gym Badges when interacting with the many Gyms around the world. Gym Badges serve as mementos of your Pokémon GO adventures and reflect your contribution to a Gym’s success.

You’ll be able to level up your Badges by battling, giving Berries to the Pokémon in the Gym and spinning the Gym’s Photo Disc. You can earn the opportunity to receive bonus items and increased rewards from Gyms by raising the level of your Gym Badge.

New Raid Battle Feature: All around the world, you’ll soon be able to participate in the new Raid Battle feature at Gyms. A Raid Battle is a cooperative gameplay experience that encourages you to work with other Trainers to defeat an extremely powerful Pokémon known as the Raid Boss. Before a Raid Battle begins, all Pokémon assigned to the Gym will return to their Trainers, and a large Egg will appear atop the Gym. When the countdown above the Egg reaches zero, the Raid Boss will be revealed.

Before you can battle the Raid Boss, you’ll need a Raid Pass. You can get one free Raid Pass per day by visiting a Gym, but you can only hold one at a time. You can also get Premium Raid Passes from the in-game shop. Upon using your pass to join the battle, you and up to 20 other Trainers work together to defeat the Raid Boss. If you successfully defeat the Raid Boss within the five-minute time limit, you’ll have the chance to catch an extra powerful Pokémon of your own!

New Items: After defeating a Raid Boss, you’ll receive a collection of rewards, including some new items obtained only by defeating a Raid Boss: Rare Candies, Golden Razz Berries, and two types of Technical Machines—Fast and Charged. A Rare Candy is a mysterious candy that, when used on a Pokémon, turns into that Pokémon’s Candy. Golden Razz Berries will greatly increase your chances of catching a Pokémon you encounter in the wild and can also be given to a Pokémon assigned to a Gym to fully recover its motivation meter. Technical Machines are items you can use to permanently teach a Pokémon a new Fast Attack or Charged Attack.

To put these exciting changes in motion, we’ll be temporarily disabling all Gyms. Once the update has been rolled out to players around the world, Gyms will return. The Raid Battle feature will then be rolled out slowly over the next few weeks, starting as a beta, with raids visible only to a subset of players at certain Gym locations. Over a few days, we’ll invite more players to participate and enable raids at more Gyms around the world. Keep an eye on our social media channels for updates on when you’ll be able to start battling in raids. We can’t wait to see you outside battling at your local Gyms!

Phew! Lots of changes, but they certainly sound exciting!

  1. Sounds cool. However, honestly not enough to make me want to download the game again. Its been nearly a year and we still haven’t got trading or an actual pvp system. It’s great they have added gen 2, this and other minor features but I still don’t think its enough to make this game great again. Its a shame that the game has become more revenue stream for Niantic, But hey ho thats business.

  5. Why don’t they just make Pokémon Go 2 with the ability to transfer pokemon over. That would get people more excited than an update would. Also maybe add Gen 3? Make Pokémon actually have levels and moves and make it… a Pokémon game?

    Xishzao
    Cricket PKM
    Bug/Dragon
Shield Dust/Tinted Lens HA: Super Luck
it is a very small greenish red insectoid pokemon with small tiny wavy ridges on the length of its body, its small head has very bright wide purple compound eyes. on the head is two sets wire thin antenna with a glowing dew at the tip one pair on the head and a second pair around its mouth. it has only four limbs which are often folded, each limb has rows of hooks and a small foot with reptilian claws, and lastly a short pointed tail.

  8. Well I defeated Clair… it was a massacre. I lost 4 Pokémon.

    Jack Sparrow – Fearow

    Bolt – Jolteon

    Hiemlich- Butterfree

    Dopey – Slowking

All killed by that Kingdra. Hiemlich tried to paralyze it, dopey tried to avenge Bolt, and Jack Spearow wicked it down to red only for it to heal.

I only barely snatched victory. It ran out of PP for all of its moves besides smoke screen so Jasmine was able to take it down.

Only Jasmine the Nidoqueen and Jack Jack remain…

    My god…

I already know I’m using Heracross and the Dratini in The Dragon’s Den. But I need two more Pokémon.

  10. Guys, this is a weird question but it’s driving me crazy! Sylveon in SM has three battle poses if you like, special, physical where she lunges forwards and this third one I love where she basically flies. But I can’t find any moves where she uses the third one? Not reflect, not work up, not light screen!!!!

Anyone have any clue or ideas?!!

    • I have a confession to make. For years I have been thinking up an anime, where no humans are taking the spotlight, and are only implied. It focuses on a Kirby-shaped reptilian race on the planet Chimeria. I have based it on my favorite Lego franchise, Bionicle. The eight tribes, the eight elements that make up the planet are water, fire, earth, wind, darkness, light, psychic, and grass. I would also have Namco collaborate with Takara if I had the chance to create the anime I had in mind. Oh and the enemy the race faces are huge virus-like beings called Viroi.

  14. Ok so I think I may start a W2 Nuzlocke, but some questions…
-Do fishing and surfing count as finding the first Pokemon on a route: as in just the first Pokemon in the water is the only one you can catch?
-Can you catch events like Braviary and Jellicent?
-Do different rods count as finding as different Pokemon or the first one you find fishing the only one?
-Can you catch Legendaries like Virizion?
    – Do I have catch Purloin on Route 1 because its the demonstration Pokemon?
-Should I do for names Marvel Super hero’s? Or Other Nintendo characters?
    – If I’m in Dark Grass and find 2 can I catch both Pokemon?

  16. Siiiiiiiiigh, another lonely night. My brothers are out and my parents the same, I sit alone in my gazebo in the rain and darkness, the rhythmic pounding of raindrops on the roof and the humid breeze wafting through, I feel like heading in but lost the enthusiasm to make it happen. The rain dies and rises devoiding all forms of sounds, I sit in my gravity chair staring into the ceiling with occasional lone drop finding its way in my eye, I want to go inside to eat but we have nothing, so why bother going in. It gets darker by the minute contemplating weather not to sleep here for the night probably not since I have work the next morning, it’s times like this I wish I had somebody to accompany me in the secludedness

          • I should’ve never existed
Should’ve stayed Electric/Ghost and doesn’t need levitate while in forms
It just so freaking annoying barely any weakness stupidly bulky, access to wisp and pain split
It doesn’t deserve all this it needs a nerf
Like only regular form gets Levitate while
            Wash gets Water Absorb
            Mow Harvest
            Heat Flame Body
            Fan Motor Drive
            Freeze Refrigerate

          • I can’t get pain split on it as I wanted to breed it in gen 7 so it could retain the Dive Ball. Really only Rotom-W and maybe Heat are any good. The Levitate thing is to retain a link to its’ ghost form.

          • Well it’s only a ghost only when it doesn’t have a machine vessel to inhabit
I just want that stupid thing to get a downgrade

          • It is still a ghost, that is part of the design, like how Decidueye can still fly even though it loses the type. If Pokemon could have 3 types I’m sure it would retain the type itself.

          • Well at least if it was Electric/Ghost/Water it can have its weakness to Ghost and Dark back which means knock off city

          • I all want is more options to kill this thing otherwise it can just absorb blows and heal with pain split, cripple with wisp and just a super powerful stab Hydro Pump

          • Well there are quite a few counters. I tend to hit it with strong neutral attacks. Knock Off still ruins its’ longevity. Grass attacks if you can fit them on usually finish it fairly well. Toxic also helps and Taunt. Sleep is a less reliable option as is confusion.

          • There are very few Grass types I would use
            Mainly Breloom or Tangrowth

At least back in the day Ol Seismitoad used to stop Washtom in its tracks
You couldn’t use Volt Switch or Hydro Pump and though could burn him he’s a special attacker

          • You can just use Grass moves, don’t need the type.
Part of your problem is that you play by smogon rules so are limited by tiers. I don’t really so I guess that’s partly why I see it as less of an issue.

          • Well what grass moves could I possibly get on non grass types
You think Crawdaunt can just get power whip or Energy Ball on a something not grass
And a non stab move would never kill it entirely

          • You don’t have to always 1HKO. Grass moves don’t have great distribution I agree. Part of the problem may also be your choice in Pokemon. But as you don’t like to budge much on those Idk what else to suggest.

          • Why would a lawnmower get harvest?
Admittedly Fan retaining Levitate is bullshit and I would want it to have speed boost just because it needs SOME sort of benefit

          • Well I say that because it’s not a plant and wouldn’t benefit from chlorophyll and seeing how a lawnmower just munches up whatever plant matter in its way I thought harvest would be appropriate

And Fan was hard since I won’t let it have gale wings but unlike other forms this one has a motor so why not motor drive take in thunder waves and get speed

Seriously this thing needs to go down a couple pegs, if Gengar can lose levitate so can a washing machine

They definitely did a smart thing by holding that Pokemon Direct, but they really need to bring that hype back. I feel like with Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon people are focusing a lot on the far future rather than what we’re getting in less than 5 months (which is actually great, it means Nintendo is doing something right)

    • I am surprised that we didn’t get any USUM footage at E3, but I am hoping that this means that they are going to a similar information campaign as SUMO. I am expecting Corocoro to start having USUM stuff next month, and I also speculate that we might start getting small mini trailers the beginning or end of next month, to allow gamefreak to have enough time to properly advertise and hype up USUM. Most of my friends aren’t getting USUM, but I am getting both versions. I think there might be some hype worthy stuff.

Pokedex Entry: This Pokemon is said to be constantly hungry no matter how much it eats and will constantly stuff its mouth if given the opportunity. If food is taken away from them, they will violently expel a noxious acid from their mouth. Due to their overeating, they have grown much heavier and are unable to move very well. There have been some cases where a Venacious eats so much at once that it suffocates before swallowing what it was currently eating.

Pokedex Entry: Masquerain are known as a prime example for natural Mega Evolution. Despite the massive change they undergo, Masquerain barely struggle to attain this form. They are able to handle moisture much more efficiently from previous evolutions and are commonly seen during storms. A weird energy eminates from the eyes on their wings. This energy seems to prevent electricity from damaging them much.

Storm Eye: Reduces damage from electric type moves done to user by half, flying type moves are raised by 2.0x for the user, user cannot be paralyzed.

I need to stop, I read somewhere that Masq and Araq are counterparts (It actually lines up perfect, different times of day to appear and same stat total) so I decided to make them as such

Basically, CryptoPokémon are just Pokémon that haven’t been officially confirmed, or still have much unknown about them.

#???-Brewja (Brew + Bruja, Potion in a Bottle)
    The Concoction Pokémon
    Poison/Fairy
    Power of Alchemy/Clear Body

Brewja is a species of Pokémon that is currently not confirmed to exist. Sightings are sporadic, but the realistic way Brewja is often described makes it a more widely accepted CryptoPokémon than others.

Supposedly, Brewja is a fairy creature with a transparent body, the only opaque part being its stopper-like head. It contains a mystifying mixture that is unique to each Brewja, and they all cause a variety of effects. Certain Brewja have been recorded as kind, nurturing souls… Yet others have been described as pure evil.

    #???-Brewjaha (Brew + Bruja + Brouhaha, Cauldron)
    The Cauldron Pokémon
    Poison/Fairy
    Power of Alchemy/Steelworker

Another, cauldron-like CryptoPokémon, and rumored to be an evolution to Brewja. This connection has been made by CryptoPokéologists who have stated that they are often seen together – and in fact it is believed that a Brewja’s mixture is influenced by its two parent Brewjaha.

The player’s first encountered CryptoPokémon will be a Brewjaha in Pokémon Acid! An especially powerful Brewjaha will serve to challenge the player as they attempt to enter the Vat of Magic, and the Brewja it leaves behind serves as the first concrete example of the specimen!

#???-Frixie (Frit + Pixie, Pixie Dust Pestle)
    The Pestle Pokémon
    Fairy/Rock
    Dust Settler/Sand Veil/Sand Stream

Similar to Brewja, the main scientific community believes that Frixie’s existence is a possibility. Unlike Brewja, however, Frixie does not resemble an object – it skillfully utilises them! This crafty kobold utilises its pestle in order to create ‘Flixie Dust’, its main defensive mechanism. This dust has a random effect each time, inflicting a variety of status effects.

#???-Iflit (Ifrit + Flit, Pixie Dust Mortar)
    The Mortar Pokémon
    Fairy/Rock
    Dust Settler/Sandglass/Sand Stream

As it utilises a pestle, and has a similar appearance to it, Iflit has been connected to Flixie. They are believed to gather around other Flixie and Iflit in order to more efficiently make Flixie Dust. Iflit no longer need to use Flixie Dust as their sole defensive measure, but they can utilise what they store from Flixie they work with. They no longer need a pestle, crushing food in their mortar with their bare hands.

The player’s first encountered CryptoPokémon will be an Iflit in Pokémon Base! An especially powerful Iflit will serve to challenge the player as they attempt to enter the Vat of Magic, and the Flixie it leaves behind serves as the first concrete example of the specimen!

Too lazy to explain abilities and signature moves rn, just want feedback XD

    • I actually kind of like some of them bigger in size. The smaller versions made some of them look a little off. I think the Pokemon page models need resizing in general lol

  45. I like how in Pokémon X and Y they change Yveltal from the death pokemon to the destruction pokemon then in Sun and Moon they just go “fuck it” and straight up say that Cosmog could die

  47. Just watched the new Pokemon anime intro. Interesting to see them use the old intro song again. The new intro also seems to hint at Ash’s Rockruff maybe evolving into a Midday Lycanroc. It could not, but I wouldn’t be surprised seeing as Gladion has the Midnight form. Also really interested to see them show the Totems. I’d really like to see Ash finally go forth and to his usual adventure. I egt they wanted to do something different and I am enjoying the current format, but I kind of wish they’d have Ash start to separate from the school now. It’s clear he doesn’t need to be there so why not have him start traveling again with purpose? I think maybe it’s also a problem that they made so many of the captains students at the school too. When he finally gets to Akala are we supposed to believe that Mallow, Lana, and Kiawe are actually really experienced trainers this entire time and just happen to enjoy hanging out at the school? I wonder how they’ll focus on each trial with that in mind. I made sense that Hala could show him the first trial (altho I wish they had had Ilima do it instead), but with so many trials on Akala I can’t see him having Olivia show off all of them. Anyway I’m enjoying what I’m seeing. I imagine that there will be a new intro for each island (at least in Japan anyway) so that’ll be interesting to see.

    • That’s good to hear I enjoy Kalos not as much as some other regions, but I admit it was amazing to see the game, my big problem was some of the Pokemon being way too over hyped aka:Talonflame
And not a fan of Gourgeist either

what will my team be in USUM?
i’m a very picky team chooser and only my likes make the cut but this region just suuuucked with pokemon
i mean i pretty much have to pick Litten as a starter, and i just need a Rockruff, and naturally i need a Fighting type, maybe Passimian or Bewear, and Mudsdale is a must and how can i not use Golisopod and Kommo-o

the dex is just sucky and there’s hardly anything i like and the rule is always use native pokemon

      • I was breeding Rotom and it hatched shiny, I’m not fussed about shiny Rotom so I soft reset and swapped this in instead. The Magikarp swap method is how I’d recommend getting it but I have mentioned it before and you didn’t seem to be interested.

    • NICE!! Golett is a cool shiny. I wish I was still jazzed about shiny hunting……Maybe when USUM come out I’ll get back into it. I think I just burned myself out in gen 6 and then by the time SM came out I was tired and SOS chaining is certainly not the most fun way of doing it. We shall see in USUM I guess lol

      • Yeah the best way to get shinies in SM in my opinion is the Magikarp switch method. I haven’t managed a single SOS one yet.

        • I got a handful of SOS shinies, but that get’s old. I also tried the Magikarp switch way, but that went way too long and I kind of HATE having to clear box space. I really wish they would add mass releases to the box. Being able to clear an entire box or even just an entire line would be so helpful.

  52. Listening to the Hoenn saga intros from the anime is making me yearn for intros to become like how they used to be. Back during the early days (basically from gens 1-3) the intros always gave this feeling of confidence off. All the songs were about trying to be the best(there ever was lol) and heading for the top. Sure they’d mention having friends by the person’s side(Ash’s I guess? lol), but they never sacrificed the idea of shooting to be at the top for everyone to be important and buddy buddy. In much later seasons the intros stopped being about being the best and only focused on being a good sport. I think it really got bad with gen 5 and gen 6 wasn’t much better. That said the last season of 6 wasn’t too bad. Having your friends by your side is great, but when every song is about cooperation and being super happy for the sake of being super happy I can’t get behind that. The intros were supposed to show basically how Ash perceived his journeys. Ash is a super ambitious character so the intros should be ambitious too. I think somewhere along the line the localization team forgot that. I know the current series isn’t quite the same as the old series are and that’s fine. For the first time in a while I actually think the English dub intro fits the anime’s theme and climate. That being said I hope that if they do go down a more serious route in the future they go back to how the old intros used to be. Give them a little attitude. Give them confidence. Give them something that makes not only kids, but also adults feel like they want to be badass. That’s my take on it hahahaha

    • I have to agree, listening to a compilation video with all of them, the first 3 gens and some of 4 get you pumped up and feeling more confident, like you’re going with Ash to achieve something.

      Reply
      • Exactly. Much of the later intros feel like they got complacent and now the whole feeling was like there’s no point. I’m done with intros that only talk about trying you best and not pushing through that barrier. It shouldn’t be about doing your best and then being done it should be about doing your best and then pushing to do better than that. Somewhere along the line they just kind of gave up. lol
