Hands on Preview: PokéLand First Look

For those of you that didn’t now, there is a new mobile Pokémon game called PokéLand. It’s an addition to the Pokémon Rumble series, but of course this time on mobile. Right now it is only in its alpha stage and is just out there for some users to test. Luckily, I got the app quick enough to get a chance to play… and let me tell you, Pokémon is really stepping up their game with mobile apps.

PokéLand provides all of the fun of the Rumble series, collecting toys, discovering new areas (or in PokéLand’s case, islands), without the hassle of in-game purchases. Not to say that there aren’t micro-transactions, but I’ve been playing for about 5 days now and haven’t once felt even the slightest need to buy anything. There are two types of currency like most mobile games, coins and gems. Unlike a lot of mobile games, the gems aren’t that hard to obtain which makes it quite simple to unlock new islands and new Pokémon.

Of course, it being in Japanese I can’t read everything so there are still a few aspects of the app I don’t fully understand. How to actually go about upgrading your Pokémon is one of those things. There is also an ‘arena’ where you battle choosing three Pokémon of your own and go up against a lot of Pokémon that are hard to find. Granted, you can’t obtain any Pokémon in the area, but you get to see some more rare ones and potentially earn more gems.

Overall, for just being in the Alpha stage, this game has made a great first impression on me. Pokémon GO had a rough start and has gotten better with time. Pokémon Duel was fun for a while, but I ultimately lost interest. Magikarp Jump is off to a great start though and it isn’t an exaggeration to say I’m addicted. It’s safe to say at this point Pokémon is going full force with mobile games and it seems like a good path for them to take. What do you guys think of the direction Pokémon is heading with titles on iOS and Android? And if you got a chance to play the Alpha, what was your experience with PokéLand?

  1. I had a pretty neat idea for the story of these games. So you know how in Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, the whole concept is that the meteor missed hitting the earth millions of years ago and it tells the story in an altered modern day? In this one, the story could be that Necrozma was never buried deep underground, and instead crashed in the ocean and became a sort of feared deity over Alola. Then the story could be told from the same starting period as Sun and Moon, but with drastic changes due to Necrozma’s influence. It is able to enhance its abilities by leeching off of Solgaleo or Lunala, which are no longer pure.

  3. Only GameXplain can take 10 seconds of footage and turn it into a 10 minute long video. When the next 30 second trailer for a new Metroid hits, be sure to expect five hours of analysis videos.

    • Omg right? They LOVE to over analyze this stuff. half of the things they often say are completely pulled out of their butts lol

That said I do kind of like listening to them for theory ideas lol

    • Is it interesting? I don’t want to sit there for 10 minutes listening to what we’ve already disqussed here.

  4. One thing I’m hoping for out of USUM is that we get official art for some of the old characters that got updated designs. I’d like to see some art of both Anabel and Colress

        • What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

  6. Okay, what unrevealed, realistically, 2018 game do you want the most?

    – Animal Crossing Switch
    – Skyward Sword HD Switch
    – Mario & Luigi Switch
    – Smash Bros for Switch
    – Kirby’s Epic Yarn 2
    – Pikmin 4
    – …

Don’t say Metroid or F-Zero because I doubt these will come in 2018, I suspect more of a 2019 timeframe.

      • I agree with AC. And it’s the most reasonable and to be expected list I can think off. Maybe I’m going to write out what I expect of Nintendo in the coming two years and screencap it.

E3 2011: Animal Crossing once again teased

E3 2015: “The Disappointing Year”. Two Animal Crossing spinoffs discussed.
          E3 2017: ???…Animal Crossing Switch teased?

    • Smash 5 (not a port or a deluxe) Smash 5
Animal Crossing Switch my time and soul are basically worthless these days
A new better installment of the Mario & Luigi series that doesn’t suck
Pikmin 4 always good I kinda want a tougher more challenging one like a time limit again with less safety netting
Some kinda new 3DS Zelda like a new PH or Links Awakening (And if you guys think the Switch will eliminate all functionality the 3DS provides your dead wrong)
      And maybe blindside my expectations

    • JoJo on Switch? If you can put Dragon Ball on there, then I say JoJo can do it too. Also, a new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game, idk, I’ve just been wanting a new one recently (Maybe it’s because of the fanfic I”m writing).

    • Animal Crossing Switch. I own Skyward Sword, the Mario and Luigi games fail to stand out much anymore, I’ve played Smash (unless it’s a new game. I mean a real new game), I’ve never played Epic Yarn, and while I want Pikmin 4, it’s not enough to beat out AC.

      • Skyward Sword would be a good choice just so they can improve all the nagging things about the game. First, fix the item pick up notice. Then the Joy-Cons would be a lot more accurate for motion controls. Some other QoL improvements would be nice too, like reducing the tears in the stealth thingie, remove one fight with that annoying beast plus a nice resolution boost.

        • Speaking of SS, I was debating finishing it soon. I started a year or so ago, but stopped when I got stuck in the desert factory area because I didn’t have a shield and was too lazy to leave the area. I kinda want to continue though, I’ve heard that the climax of the game is pretty neat.

          Reply
          • The desert factory is easily one of the best parts of the game! Well, actually the part with the timestones.

The climax is pretty nice for what it means to the franchise, but the final battle is lazy and there’s a annoying thing before the end.

    • Honestly, I would enjoy an Animal Crossing or Skyward sword. Can’t decide because I just recently got into the Zelda franchise and have only played Animal Crossing New Leaf.

  7. Since E3 is less than 6 days away, and since that time will blaze by due to high school graduation IN TWO DAYS, I think this is a good time to provide a new update on my E3 predictions for Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft will come later, since they’re sooner. Makes total sense.
    -Super Mario Odyssey (duh)
-Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (probably duh)
-ARMS/Splatoon 2 (probably won’t get covered too much since they’ve had 2 Directs already)
    -Xenoblade Chronicles 2
-Superstar Saga DX announced during Treehouse
    -Kirby multiplayer 3DS game announced
-More than one new IP (one of which resembles Rhythm Heaven, I don’t know why)
    2018 TEASES:
-Animal Crossing Switch (yes guys, this is the year, I believe that we will win)
    -Donkey Kong Switch
    -Fire Emblem Switch full reveal
-NO METROID (because I believe this will be saved for the Switch 2018 Presentation in January, if there is one)
    -WILD CARD: Kid Icarus Switch

This is a lot of stuff to cover in a 30 minute presentation, so I expect some of this (especially the 3DS stuff) to be delegated to the Treehouse. Out of 2018 teases, Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem are all I’m truly expecting, but I’d like to be wrong.

    • – Super Mario Odyssey
      – Pokemon
      – Maybe a new ARMS DLC fighter
      – Rabbids garbage
      – Splatoon 2
      – Xenoblade
      – Animal Crossing
      – Virtual Console
      – Kirby
      – Metroid teaser
      – Smash trailer that will blow everyone away and give us prime meme material

      Reply
      • Oh goodness, I forgot about Mario and Rabbids. I think that will be at Ubisoft’s conference so they can argue their point that they’re supporting the Nintendo Switch in the future and earn slightly more respect.

    • You’re overshooting it by a lot. I love optimism as much as the next guy, but the length of the direct has me worried.

    • – SMO in-depth trailer
      – Ultra Sun and Moon details
      – Xenoblade Chronicles 2 gameplay trailer
      – Mario Kingdom Rabbids
      – Pokken Tournament DX
      – Monster Hunter XX coming west
      – Fire Emblem Warriors
      – Sizzle reel with Stardew Valley, Terraria, other indie games, this summer
      – Some amiibo announcements
      – That’s all, I don’t really expect big new game announcements, maybe some smaller titles but their scheduled is packed already this year

NO 2018 teases, seriously they won’t be there. They said it they would focus on 2017 and the presentation is only 30 minutes long.

      • >Agreed on SMO.
        >Could be entirely featured in the Treehouse.
        >Agreed.
        >Probably at Ubisoft’s event.
        >I don’t think they’ll reveal anything else on that in the event, but maybe during the Treehouse or during the invitational.
        >Not. Yet.
        >Agreed on this too, actually.
        >Probably.
        >I don’t see amiibo having a big focus this time, for some reason.
Also, no 2018 teases? Focus on 2017 pretty much implies that small teasers for 2018 will be featured (what else would they cover for 2018? Third-party or indie games?) I don’t know, I felt like responding to your guesses so here it is.

          • I don’t know much about Monster Hunter, but most of the games take 6-8 months to come out in other countries at least. I think it’ll probably be an April 2018 game or something like that, being featured in a later Direct.

          • MHXX is already localised though, doesn’t require a lot of effort aside from importing the translated database. I can feel a December 2017.

        • I still think they’ll do a what’s in store feature in October/November. The past few years they’ve really concentrated their efforts on what’s only coming the next few months. This was even apparent with the Switch reveal.

  8. Ok can I ask a serious question? I’ve now just seen two……TWO different theory videos where the creators thought that it was possible for Brawly…..to be Hau’s father……….Am I missing something or does that sound like the dumbest excuse for a reach ever? I mean come on…….lol

  9. Lets look back at Nintendos Direct from April in total the total time they shown 3ds games and Switch games was 20:46. Thats basically rapid fire right there since that direct revealed a lot of things. Im not worried about a 30 minute E3 if Nintendo keeps this Formula of rapid fire

    Reply
    • Can I just say how I do’t like the new direct format? I’m not a fan at all. I think it takes away some of the surprises if they just list all the stiff in a row for all to see right off the bat.

  11. So I was thinking. I SEEMS like the next Pokemon to get Alolan forms will likely be gen 2 mons. are there any mons that aren’t currently in SM that could possibly show up? I’m pretty sure Slugma and Magcargo aren’t in the dex. I find that weird since they’re the lava Pokemon. Maybe’ they’ll make an appearance? Maybe as fire/water types? that’d be pretty cool lol

  12. So, I have a question for you ladies and laytons here (Yes, that was a Tree’s Apparentice reference).Since I have Super Sentai on the mind right now, what post-Jetman team (Just think Mighty Morphin- Ninja Steel along with Dairanger, Go-Buster, ToQger, Zyuohger, and Kyuranger) would you like to be on? And if you want to, what pre-Jetman team would you want to be on? For me, I would like to be on the ToQger team for post-Jetman, and Jetman for pre-Jetman.

  13. Oh!!!! I just thought of a cool Alolan form!!! What if in USUM instead of Mareanie being the hunter of Corsola we have an Alolan Corsola that hunts Mareanie. Like at first Corsola couldn’t do anything to fight off Mareanie, but then it changed to defend itself. Sort of like Yungoos and Rattata.

          • Gotta keep trying. Maybe take up something to better yourself then if not a regular hobby. There’s something out there for everyone. It’s a pretty big world lol

          • there’s just nothing that i want to do and i can’t stray far because my parents need me to pick up the slack and take care of the dogs
and they’res barely people my age round my parts
so yeah…….i’m basically alone the days i’m not working

          • You don’t need to go far to learn a new skill. Just keep trying and I’m sure you’ll find something eventually. Once you find a passion for something you’ll see that filling the day isn’t all that hard to do. also not having people your exact age doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Just try and find people that have similar interests. Maybe people from work or something. I realize meeting new people or finding a new hobby/interest is easier said than done, but once you do it you’ll feel more fulfilled.

  14. If we get more alola forms and they’re ugly and lame like alolan geodude I’m gonna be really mad. Well, more mad than usual at least.
