Hands on Preview: PokéLand First Look

For those of you that didn’t now, there is a new mobile Pokémon game called PokéLand. It’s an addition to the Pokémon Rumble series, but of course this time on mobile. Right now it is only in its alpha stage and is just out there for some users to test. Luckily, I got the app quick enough to get a chance to play… and let me tell you, Pokémon is really stepping up their game with mobile apps.

PokéLand provides all of the fun of the Rumble series, collecting toys, discovering new areas (or in PokéLand’s case, islands), without the hassle of in-game purchases. Not to say that there aren’t micro-transactions, but I’ve been playing for about 5 days now and haven’t once felt even the slightest need to buy anything. There are two types of currency like most mobile games, coins and gems. Unlike a lot of mobile games, the gems aren’t that hard to obtain which makes it quite simple to unlock new islands and new Pokémon.

Of course, it being in Japanese I can’t read everything so there are still a few aspects of the app I don’t fully understand. How to actually go about upgrading your Pokémon is one of those things. There is also an ‘arena’ where you battle choosing three Pokémon of your own and go up against a lot of Pokémon that are hard to find. Granted, you can’t obtain any Pokémon in the area, but you get to see some more rare ones and potentially earn more gems.

Overall, for just being in the Alpha stage, this game has made a great first impression on me. Pokémon GO had a rough start and has gotten better with time. Pokémon Duel was fun for a while, but I ultimately lost interest. Magikarp Jump is off to a great start though and it isn’t an exaggeration to say I’m addicted. It’s safe to say at this point Pokémon is going full force with mobile games and it seems like a good path for them to take. What do you guys think of the direction Pokémon is heading with titles on iOS and Android? And if you got a chance to play the Alpha, what was your experience with PokéLand?

  1. Any two of these things would make my E3:
    – AC Switch
    – MHXX localization
    – Something to prove to me that USUM will be awesome
    – Something to hype me up EVEN MORE about Xenoblade 2
    – FE16 teaser trailer

  3. Interesting to point out that in one of the pictures with all of the Pikachu, there seems to be a trial captain standing in the background. This either confirms that trials are back or perhaps the trainer model is being used for an alternate purpose.

  4. OMG OMG

I just realized. Since this is the second series of games, this means we get an animated short before the game comes out. YESSSSSSS

  8. Just wanted to acknowledge this article we’re on for a moment. Thanks SteelScizor for this overview, it’s cool for us because we don’t have access to it (and Rumble is awesome). Anyways, I’m expecting a new E3 trailer and some gameplay next week for USUM which should be great. I honestly can’t wait for the first big batch of news to arrive and send all of the irrational hatred out the window.

    • I’m not sure exactly when we will get more news. When Sun and Moon came out there wasn’t a video for at least a month. I think I am going to keep my expectations low and expect news by the beginning of next month. Even then I am only expecting for them to reveal the covers of the game, the legendaries, and another feature (maybe walking Pokemon). Do you think I am being too cautious?

      • The thing is though, is that it’s 5 months away, compared to SM’s 8 months. Besides, around this time for SM, we had a covered demo for E3. It would seem weird to me if they just tease us here right before E3 and not talk about it there and wait until next month.

    • Also I agree with you on the matter of the irrational hate. I believe that it will blow over by the second news drop at the latest.

      • So far, it seems like it’s being given treatment that combines Platinum and B2W2 in terms of new additions and dual release. We all know that these are two of the best games in the series…there’s no way these games are going to be bad.

    • I hope you’re right. While I’m not sure we’ll get info so soon I do think the first real batch of info will be the true test. Right now we know nothing and while people are disappointed that it SEEMS to be just a 3rd revision (including myself) It’s worth at least hearing them out and seeing what they’ve added………I will say I would have been WAY more excited if they had announced an actual sequel or something with a distinctly different story, but alas we shall have to see what these games really are before coming to any actual judgments.

      • I am quite optimistic that it will be a great game. Going from the cutscenes shown just in the announcement trailerI can say that they have probably changed the plot as much as they did between B/W and B2/W2. We have already been introduced to the fact that there multiple universes in the game series. If they wanted to they could actually change any character in the games since it is a different universe. Hau might not even exist in this universe and you could have another rival. What I am saying is that USUM could be even more than SM in comparison to how different B2/W2 was to B/W. it all depends on how far The Pokemon Company is willing to take this concept. Also if it was not clear I am interpreting alternate take on the story as alternate universe. (I mean we even went to an alternate universe in the SM games to catch Cosmog).

        • I think I’d be cool with an entirely different story like that. I don’t mind it being during the same time period or the same main character, but I just don’t want to feel like I’m playing the SAME game twice just because they decided to release a slightly updated version lol Guess we’ll just have to see tho.
