Switch Reveal Opinion Extravaganza

It’s Dae here! I promised to write up a bit on my opinion on the Switch reveal, but it turned out to be longer than I expected. Therefore I’ll take this opportunity to publish my first article in a couple of years. Enjoy!

Let’s get the conference out of the way first; it was a poor showing. Live shows are usually a hit or a miss and this one was definitely a miss. Awkward, stiff translations as well as weird presentation of games and holding out on information that would entice customers are among my major gripes. The nice thing is that the Zelda trailer was absolutely amazing and Mario and Xenoblade 2 had a good showings too. But Zelda shouldn’t have been the final ‘one more thing’ surprise, everybody expected it to be a launch title already. Rather, I’d have liked a Metroid tease or something along those lines as a finisher for the show.

The lack of distinct games was also apparent. I guess they didn’t want to show games that weren’t prepared for release, but it didn’t show any confidence that they could produce a steady lineup of games for the Switch. People fear a repeat of the Wii U now, and that could really damage the sales of the console. I also wonder what makes the games so sparse at launch. Nintendo hasn’t released a lot of games in the past two years so I would have assumed they were working on new ones. If that isn’t the case, what were they doing all the time? I guess we’ll have to take a wait and see approach here and time will tell if they announce more games.

The games that have been announced do look pretty good though. Zelda is, of course, breathtaking and had one of the best trailers for a game I’ve ever seen. It really hit all the marks on a checklist of ‘how to make the perfect trailer’. Odyssey looks refreshing and can set itself apart from Galaxy so it won’t have the trouble of being compared to its shadow. The real life city may feel a bit uncanny valley, but I actually like the effect it brings out and luckily there’s a whole slew of different environments. Really looking forward to a more sandbox-style Mario again after the more linear games we’ve had in the past ten years. Splatoon 2 looks fresh, although it looks more like an upgraded port instead of a actual sequel, but then again what is a shooter sequel actually? You can’t innovate a lot except for new weapons, new maps, new strategies and a better online infrastructure. I don’t know if it was confirmed or denied, but I hope for online co-op possibility. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also more of a luxury port, but the base game was great and this one will still be lots of fun for parties. I liked the new style of Xenoblade 2 too; it’s a bit different from the previous two but that’s OK in my opinion. Looking forward to hear about those games. 1 2 Switch looks like a fun mini-game collection, but I understand people saying they wanted this to be a pack in title. I don’t expect many people to cough up $50 for it, and I do believe they should have made it a $30 game, but I wouldn’t count on Nintendo rethinking it as a pack-in. I feel like they want to give the impression of it being a top-quality title.

The Switch will launch with only a couple of games, the sparsest it’s ever been for a launch of a console. I think there are a couple of reasons for this. First, you have Nintendo releasing Zelda: BotW. Most who picks up a Switch will pick up Zelda too. That makes for a tough competition from the get-go and games like Skyrim really could suffer from it. That’s why I think some high profile games got delayed last minute when they heard Zelda was making launch. And on the third party side, there a few ports of older games. But then I think, who buys all those ports anyway? Yes, they can make the ports and show ‘confidence’ in the Switch, but neither customers want old ports of uninteresting games they already bought and the publisher won’t make their money back too. It’s sadly a bit of self fulfilling prophecy, as few ports don’t entice customers to buy the console which leads to even fewer ports. But the Switch will all-in-all be a Nintendo and Japanese gaming system, and we just have to have faith in the usual companies to bring over their franchises. In this way I see Switch more as 3DS, with it getting the 3DS like library. With this I mean stuff like Phoenix Wright, Zero Escape… To be successful I think Nintendo just have to push through with being an alternative system, there’s no point to go compete with PS4 and XB1 without bringing some new stuff on the table.

And that brings me to the hardware. I haven’t used the actual hardware itself, but I read many positive impressions. The build quality is great and the looks are top notch. I even find it to have a bit of ‘sex-appeal’. If you search for direct comparison shots between the Switch and Wii U Gamepad, you’ll realize how bad the Gamepad looked and feel like it was made by Fisher-Price. But they did a great job with the Switch. The concept is appealing, and can be demonstrated easily to someone unfamiliar with the console. As a power engineer with some electronics background, I can also tell from all the technical stuff I read that this is the best console they could have built. The processor and graphics card is the most modern one that can power the console for continuous use. Processors in a iPhone 7 or upcoming Galaxy S8 may be faster, but they clock down due to power and heat concerns. The battery is also rather large and takes up a lot of space already, so saying they skimped out on battery is untrue. The battery life might not be a lot, but it’s actually comparable to phones running at 100% load. They also use a lot of modern application like USB C fast charging, Wifi AC, multitouch… Maybe you don’t believe it, but it’s really an impressive piece of tech that is competitive with stuff released today.

We can’t forget about the best parts of the console too: the Joy-Cons. I feel like they are the heart of the console, they are so well designed that the concept of the Switch really shines. Some vendors do have some detachable controllers for a generic tablet, but the from factor, build quality and ease of use are so far ahead that you can really see the ‘Nintendo magic’. Switching (haha, get it?) between docked, portable and table mode is so easy that it gets this wow factor when showing it off to friends. Being able to share a Joy-Con for two players is also nice, even though it doesn’t seem to be the most comfortable thing. But I can assure you, I can pop out my Switch and have some great fun with friends playing Mario Kart 8. The HD Rumble works well too apparently, and I think Nintendo can find some good applications for its use in games. Having some motions controls built in while functioning as traditional controllers is what makes this console combine the best of both worlds. A 20 hour battery life isn’t too shabby either, and you can easily recharge the battery when you dock the console.

This all reflects on the price too, which is indeed a bit expensive. $80 for a pair of Joy-Cons is steep, and far above a regular PS4 or Xbox One controller. Yes, you technically get two, but you’ll be buying them in pairs, because who wants a single lonely Joy-Con? I suspect many games to require a pair of Joy-Cons too, even though I don’t know if it’s possible to connect four pairs of Joy-Con if some game featured four player local multiplayer (Smash Bros?). They feature lots of tech and game companies always want to make money on accesories, but I think it would have been better if they priced it $10 to $15 lowers to reduce the sticker shock effect. The other accessories are expensive too, the Pro Controller is the definitive controller for couch gaming, but it comes with a definitive price as well. Buying extra Joy-Cons don’t even give the same colour straps, which can be bought for $8 seperately. And if you want an extra grip and be able to charge your controllers, which you can’t do with the included grip, it’ll cost you an extra $30. Granted, including it in the box would have upped the box price with another $15. If you want a ‘starters pack’ for new Switch users, you can feel nickel-and-dimed due to the high accessory costs. I wish Nintendo can first address those prices if it seems that it is a barrier to entry.

As for the box itself, I feel the $299 is still a fair price. Based on what I read, I already expected that $249 would be a tough target to reach. $299 is actually reasonable if you know what’s inside and how much things cost in manufacturing, R&D costs, distribution, retail and not to mention bad exchange rate and taxes in Europe. I believe that Nintendo still makes less profit in Europe per console sold, since people always forget that doing business in general is more expensive here due to wages, business taxes and buildings. The real question is actually value sided. It’s not: ‘Is this a fair price to charge’, but: ‘Do I feel like this is a fair price to me’. Nintendo will have to do a good job in selling value to the consumer and needs a clear messaging what it’s actually selling. In that I feel that a comparison with PS4 and generic tablets is not the way to go. Yes, the PS4 is comparable in price and more powerful, but as long as the Switch offers distinctly different features, people may still get enticed to buy. We’ll see if this works out, but I’m not the one who is calling this out as a flop already.

As for myself, I still believe in the Switch and even did save up enough the past two years to go on a crazy shopping splurge. I pre-ordered the Grey console, got the Pro Controllers, the Red/Blue Joy-Cons, the Charging Grip and an extra case. I really felt like that at some point in the future, I would have bought it anyway to play my favorite Nintendo games and therefore it doesn’t matter to me if I buy it sooner. I also want the definitive edition of Zelda, and being able to transport it between my dorm and home is a really big plus to me. I really look forward to most of the first party games that are announced, even though not many details have come out already. The conference damped my enthusiasm a bit, but I think it will be on full fire again closer to March 3rd. I’ll do a technical review of the Switch in six weeks when I get my hands on one, so look forward to reading it here!

This thing has gotten really long now, and I didn’t even touch on all the aspects of the Switch, but I need to wrap up here. If you’d like to have my opinion on an untouched subject, just ask in the comments. I’ll still check them regularly, even though I may not be an active writer anymore 🙂 I’d love to hear your opinion on the Switch too. Are you buying at launch? Holding out a bit? Or have even become uninterested? What do you think of the price? What games can entice you to buy? Tell me in the comments!

Enjoy and you’ll hear back from me when I get my Switch!

  1. Darn! I just mixed and matched up some random Poketuber’s theme, and made it super demonic, but I can’t even share it here! FIDDLESTICKS!

  2. So, this might not be the place to ask this but I’d like some kind of response. In preparation of BotW, I wanna play through some old Zelda games to get a feel for the series. The one thing that’s turning me off about some of those titles are the spider-like enemies that appear throughout. I know this sounds ridiculous but I have major arachnophobia and this carries through with video games. I’d like to enjoy some of those older titles but I can’t bear to look at or fight any of those large enemies. I’d appreciate some thoughts or advice from anybody 🙂

    • Well…honestly I don’t know what titles wouldn’t have many spiders. Don’t take my word for this, but I don’t recall ALBW having spider enemies.

  3. Well… After all this time of playing it, I finally beat Emerald at 56:29. It was a great game, I had a lot of fun with it, along with the Pokemon I used in the walkthrough:

    Manectric (Tempest)
    Lv 50
    Male
    Item: none
    Ability: Static
    Bold Nature
    – Rain Dance
    – Iron Tail
    – Thunderbolt
    – Thunder
The last Pokemon that I added to the team, Tempest was caught at Route 118. He helped me a great bit against Juan, Glacia, Drake, and Wallace. He was one of the strongest Pokemon I had on the team, and a prominent powerhouse. The Bold Nature helped it survive deadly physical attacks, so it could withstand some attacks. Adding Thunder and Rain Dance on this thing made it almost unstoppable to beat.

    Flygon (Quake)
    Lv 49
    Male
    Item: Soft Sand
    Ability: Levitate
    Serious Nature
    – Earthquake
    – Steel Wing
    – Fly
    – Dragon Claw
To be honest, I’ve always wanted to have a Flygon whenever I decided to play Emerald, so Quake was an instant team member from the get-go. I’ve heard about so much positive feedback of using a Flygon in a walkthrough, so I decided wynaut use one for Emerald? After roaming the desert just to find one, I managed to catch one without accidentally killing it, and named it Quake. He took the longest to evolve, and during that time was a frail Trapinch and Vibrava, but packed a lot of power in all of his evolutions. Flygon also became one of my favorite Ground types during this run.

    Crawdaunt (Zoidberg)
    Lv 49
    Male
    Item: Sea Incense
    Ability: Hyper Cutter
    Naive Nature
    – Aerial Ace
    – Swords Dance
    – Blizzard
    – Surf
When I planned out my Emerald run team, Sharpedo was a top contender for one of the spots. Yet when I got the Good Rod, I discovered that you could find a high-leveled Corphish on Route 117. So instead, I caught myself Zoidberg. Perhaps the most interesting Pokemon of the team, Zoidberg had a rough start because its move set was so limited, as it couldn’t fully utilize its strong Physical attack due to water type moves being Special and the only Dark move it could get in Emerald was Knock Off, which sucked. Fortunately, he held his own, and before the Elite Four I taught Zoidberg Blizzard, which helped in taking out Flygon and Altaria. Zoidberg became a great team member in the late game.

    Hariyama (Maku)
    Lv 50
    Male
    Item: Lax Incense
    Ability: Guts
    Docile Nature
    – Fake Out
    – Brick Break
    – Bulk Up
    – Strength
The original team that I wanted for Emerald had a Grumpig on the team, but when I went to the Jagged Pass to catch Spoink, I knew for a fact that Maku won me over. The outstanding bulk it had plus a fearful Attack enabled it to annihilate anything in site (with the exception for training for the E4, because, well, Golbats spammed Confuse Ray and Wing Attack). Fake Out allowed me to halt threats on the first turn, so like Norma’s Slaking was completely stopped by Hariyama. Also, Bulk Up on this thing makes it a monster. Like I wiped out almost all of Glacia’s Pokemon with just Hariyama using Bulk Up, with the exception of Walrein.

    Slaking (Lola)
    Lv 50
    Female
    Item: Silk Scarf
    Ability: Truant
    Lonely Nature
    – Hyper Beam
    – Shadow Ball
    – Strength
    – Slack Off
Without a shadow of a doubt the strongest Pokemon on my team, Lola has saved many lives in my walkthrough. The infamous chuggaconroy method of Hyper Beam + Silk Scarf inspired me to use Slaking, which in my case Hyper Beam was: Physcial Hyper Beam + Attack Boost from lonely nature + STAB + Silk Scarf + tons of Vitamins = pretty much guaranteed OHKO. Seriously. With this method, my entire team has been saved by one shotting countless threats from Emerald, such as Wallace’s Milotic, Drake’s Salamence, and Juan’s Kingdra. If it weren’t for Lola, I would be very screwed when I fight those threats.

And last but certainly not least….

    Sceptile (Razor)
    Lv 51
    Male
    Item: Miracle Seed
    Ability: Overgrow
    Quiet Nature
    – Leaf Blade
    – Double Edge
    – Giga Drain
    – Detect
My starter for Emerald. Before this run, I’ve used Sceptile before in OR, yet not as my actual starter because I traded it over from X. So this was an entirely different experience for me.
Anyway, I went through everything with Razor. We defeated Roxanne barely, delivered the finishing blow to Wattson’s Manectric, fight Archie and Maxie, explore the unexplored of Hoenn, awaken Rayquaza, destroy most of Juan’s team, help take on Wallace for the final fight, and get stuck with Absorb as our only Grass move till 22 levels later. He was an amazing starter Pokemon to have on the journey, and if I were to say, the best one I’ve had on a walkthrough. There were so many memories of using Razor to travel and battle with. I really enjoyed using Sceptile as a starter Pokemon, and he might actually become one of my favorite Pokemon of all time.

I will say that Emerald is in my Top 5 favorite Pokemon games now. Fantastic region, solid difficulty, and overall, a spectacular experience.

    Reply
      • Oh the best memory I’d have to say was when I went into the Elite Four. I’ve had Emerald for 11 years, and not once did I decided to play through it fully. I may have tried to beat Roxanne a few times, but that was the amount I went to. But finally beating Emerald feels refreshing and amazing, because I finally conquered the game I never decided to pick up.
I will say the most difficult part would have to be Winona surprisingly. I thought she would be easy by using Manectric, but her Altaria spammed Earthquake and Dragon Dance, so I had to retry a lot of times just to figure out a stradegy to beat her. The reason why it took so long was because I had no other moves to take out Flying types (other than Rock Tomb on Quake, but he would get one shot before he could move), so it was very difficult. Plus, I discovered that almost half of my team was weak to Flying, so that was a big problem.
And I will definetly try out the Battle Frontier. It was always a dream to take on the Emerald BF.

  4. Confirmed :my dog is an asshole.

I’m in bed and he is just on the other end of the bed. I move my leg weird and he starts barking at me. So I just stay still for a second and he stops then walks over and plops down as close as he can get to the middle of the bed just to give me as little room as I could have

    Reply
    • Mine drags her toys onto the bed but always chews on them right near the edge and when they drop (They always drop?) she’ll just bark until you pick it up or she gets tired of barking and gets it herself which can take a few minutes. But even for all of their annoying little faults we still love our asshole puppers!??

    • If Xurkitree was a grass type it’s name could’ve made much more sense…

And Xerneas….. It’s good as it is IMO

      Reply
          • Please tell me where it ever says that. Literally every Pokedex entry and lore entry says its literally a tree, and its antlers are made to invoke tree branches. It also learns Ingrain, as in using your roots to dig into the ground and suck up nutrients, as well as Horn Leech, which is only otherwise learn able by Grass-types with horns

          • The form of a tree, form as in it looks like a tree, but that shouldn’t really make it a Grass type,

In reality Xerneas’s tree form is motionless and petrified, no foliage whatsoever

And besides it learns a ton of healing and horn based attacks

          • That’s still a tree though, even if the tree is dead or suspended (or even during winter months) it’s still a tree.

And trees don’t move that often on their own (its mostly growth that you can’t really see happening because it’s gradual), so saying it’s ‘motionless’ doesn’t really have merit, especially when the tree is the dormant state.

And its called context. Plenty of Pokémon with horns learn Mega Horn, Horn Drill and Horn Attack without being a Bug or Normal, yet literally every Pokémon that isn’t Xerneas that learns Horn Leech is a Grass – Type (and in the case of all of them but Skiddo, Gogoat and Xerneas, they all have wooden horns).

Also, Xerneas’ only other Horn move is Megahorn, and it’s other healing moves are passive or don’t deal damage

          • It’s only a fucking tree when it dies, but when it’s out and about its its regular old ass deer fairy spirit form,

This is just another case of fucking Fairies who resemble plants but aren’t plants themselve

Florges and Comfey, at least these ones resemble plants but Xerneas does not in the slightest

So Xerneas ain’t gonna be a Grass type anytime soon

          • Florges is a symbiotic relationship and the flowers aren’t actually part of Comfey

Xerneas actually becomes a tree, and has the biological or magical capacity to become own, as well as being able to Ingrain itself into the earth and drain things similar to how grass types do it (Horn a Leech, an otherwise grass type exclusive, compared to other more widespread Grass moves)

          • How do you know huh, all we ever see about Xerneas tree is it looks like a petrified husk, what did you physically cut it open check its alive

          • Becuase the Pokedex literally calls it a tree and I’m more inclined to believe the game over some rabid Fairy hating fan because the game wouldve indicated otherwise if they didn’t want us to think it was a tree

          • are you thick, I’m only saying this one last time
It’s only a “Tree” when it gives its life energy and sleeps for thousands of years
There is zero confirmation that this tree like state is in fact an actual plant, you can make a statue of metal and concrete that looks like a tree but in reality it’s not a plant

In conclusion yes it can learn Ingrain and Horn Leech it just sticks its hoofs into the ground and sucks up nutrition and stabs its horns into thing and does the same but those two moves don’t justify it being a plant,

          • No Earthen, the Pokedex literally says it is a tree – not ‘like a tree’, a tree, as in the fucking plants keeping your sorry ass alive

          • Legends say it can share eternal life. It slept for a thousand years in the form of a tree before its revival.
            Form of a tree,
            if it says
“It slept for a thousand years as a tree before its revival” then it would make it one but it ain’t
            Goodbye

          • ‘Form of a tree’ literally means it changed its form into a tree lol

Dont let the door hit you where the good lord split you

          • Earthen, it’s either a plant or its left ambigous, there’s nothing saying it isn’t a plant.

      • Thing is tho, Yveltal as a ‘cocoon’ is literally just resembles Yveltal curled up in dormancy, and you can argue that you can make any fantasy creature take aspects of another. Also, Yveltal is already Dual-Typed. Whereas Xerneas has a drastic change in physical appearance (literally becoming a tree, which is a species change, rather than a cocoon, which is a dormant stage of an organism that doesn’t change species) and isn’t dual typed.

    • Nihilego should’ve been Psychic/Poison (granted rock/poison easy to kill)
      Celesteela Grass/Flying (easier to kill)
Kartana shouldn’t have such high defenses
Guzzlord should’ve gotten some kinda buff
They shouldn’t let Pheramosa learn Ice Beam
And Necrozma Psychic/Rock that way it isn’t such a freaking wall
Also that Terrains don’t buff STAB moves
      The Tapus shouldn’t be Fairies
Dhelmise should definitely not be a Grass Type,
Midnight Lycanroc should’ve had major Attack
Pyukumuku should at least have Mirror Coat
Mudsdale should be able to learn Bulk Up (oh and High Horse power buffed to 110 damage and a chance to flinch)
      Crabominable shouldn’t suck so much
We should’ve gotten more types of every Pokemon in the dex not just a few handfuls
      Anything else?

  6. For anyone complaining about how some Fairy-Types ‘don’t look like Fairies’

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghillie_Dhu
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banshee
    http://oxfordindex.oup.com/view/10.1093/oi/authority.20110803095648814

Three very different types of Fairies, all from the same relative geographical area. This isn’t even 1% of fairy mythologies out there, and that’s not even to include the fact that GameFreak is drafting in creatures that are similar to Fairies (angels, nymphs, mermaids) into the type

    Reply
      • That’s not the point dirt for brains, real life Fairies are varied and hence the type is varied. They don’t have enough be based off of these specific Fairies.

        Reply
        • it so is the point, what’s the point of you trying to one-up me saying not all fairies aren’t based on cutesy magical crap when the populace of them basically are

Yes in some cultures fairies are evil spirits and horrifying myths but in other cultures they’re magical and pure

The cultural barrier of representation is a very real issue, but so far all Fairies revealed fall into the cute and magical department with only a few strays (and you can’t base all of them on so because they were reconned fairy)

          Reply
          • You do realise they could’ve chosen not to retcon them if they only wanted cutesy ones?

Also, Xerneas, Koko, Bulu, and Mimikyu, and Shiinotic aren’t traditionally cute, but let’s ignore them because why not

            ‘Cultural barriers’

LOL, literally nearly every Mythology has some sort of Pokémon representing it, so there’s no cultural barriers. Most Fairies are cute because it’s a kids game and kids like cuteness. However, you blatantly ignore the uncute Fairies when there’s a decent size of them considering how small the type is, and cry ‘but they were retconned’ when in reality if they didn’t fit into this idea of Fairies being varied they would’ve been left out of the type

Also, name one Mythology where Fairies are always pure or always evil? They’re always depicted as grey, being able to choose between good and bad. ‘The only good Fairy’ shit is literally a modern thing, which GameFreak can’t take inspiration from forever before they eventually have to go into deeper territory with the type

And disregarding appearances, many Fairy types are already dark or at least morally grey. Shiinotic is practically Hypno, Lele is referred to as cruel and Fini will cause people to become lost and stranded, Mimikyu, whilst innocent, can accidently kill, Koko is fickle and does what it wants, and Bulu is lazy but can be sent into furious rages.

          • I love how riled up you are about this
First of all nearly all the reconned ones are cutesy or at least vaguely resembles fairies (Azumarill was and still is a mistake) but the rest fit the bill

And the mythology is bit of paragraph filler since you’re ignoring what already exists and trying to justify that fairies can be evil but at the moment the goody ones outweigh the few malicious ones

I will agree that those particular fairies are in a sense evil (minus Mimikyu should just be pure Ghost nuff said) and actually Shiinotic isn’t as bad as you make it out to be “Forests where Shiinotic live are treacherous to enter at night. People confused by its strange lights can never find their way home again.” it’s the dangers of a dark forest that caused the harm Shiinotic aren’t doing it on purpose (but they do feed on hypnotized prey but honestly that’s biology 101 and not fairy exclusive)

but like I said the majority is good magical Fairies which is clearly true but there can be bad ones but just so far not enough

          • Also there is this odd phenomenon that somewhat justifies Shiinotic as a Fairy which I reluctantly but agree with

A strange thing called a Fairy Ring mushroom which may be a inspiration for the type (could’ve sworn they were just pegging on their bioluminescence but whatever)

Same thing for Swirlix since in Australia Cotton candy is called Fairy Floss

          • Fairy rings are a surprisingly common phenomenon associated with Fairies, of course that’s where it comes from. That’s literally where everyone thinks Shiinotic being a Fairy comes from

          • Dude I’m not riled up lol I actually couldn’t give to shits, I just like seeing your mental gymnastics to justify your dislike of an aspect of a kids game

Also, ‘its just biology stuff’ could be used for any type for any reason and you clearly don’t know shit about Fairies if you think they’re mostly all nice

          • Because I’m busy Earthen, believe it or not my life doesn’t consist of arguing with people online

          • Because I wasn’t busy then I was? That’s kind of how life works genius, you have times to do some things and time not to

And if you *must* know why I’m not arguing as much, I’m doing homework because I made a revision schedule

    • It’s not about them looking like fairies. It’s more about how another type would fit them more than the Fairy Type, but the Fairy Type gets tacked on for some reason.

      • There’s like no pokemon where that happens tho, although I do agree the type is weird on some Pokémon that should’ve been pure

This is probably going to suprise you all from min.1 this was a Pokémon I wanted and longed for it has a good unique type that it shares with only one other Pokémon. This color sceme makes me think of Warm fired up fighter who will detonate you of this earth. And Also its name….its just like The Terminator (hence why mine is named that)

But this is still only #9 we still have waaaay more in store!
