Easily one of the best entries in the series, if not, arguably the best, Pokémon Sun & Moon has taken players by storm. And with only a month since its initial release it’s already broken sale records and danced its way into our hearts – but no game is perfect. Here are some things we didn’t like about our adventure through Alola.
The Rotom Pokedéx
Revealed as one of the first huge, new features of Gen VII in the early days of Sun & Moon’s prerelease the Rotom ‘Dex promised to give personality and new features to the age old Pokedéx. Instead we got an annoying, forgettable talking bottom screen whose dialogue was never really welcome or something we looked forward to. In terms of new features, it did give us useful pin point directions through the main story line and the Poké Finder (more on that later), but once you became the Champion Rotom didn’t serve any use other than giving very meaningless, repetitive commentary as your completed the Alola ‘Dex. And it’s completely baffling that they never made this new Rotom Form catchable and useable in battle. Overall, the Rotom Pokedéx was a fantastic idea to breathe life into such an old, unchanged device in the game, but its personality is much more suited for the anime where it’s a fully realized character, and for merchandise where it can remain as a mute, cute ‘mon to look at.
New Pokémon’s Low Encounter Rates
Pokémon Sun & Moon have some of the lowest and most exclusive encounter rates and locations for any Pokémon games released so far – being as low as 1% and 10% in only one place in some cases. For hardcore players, such as most of the people reading this, these low encounter rates are a welcome challenge and make completing the Pokedéx a little more fun and worthwhile. But for a lot of casual, younger players, its very, very easy to make it through the whole game without encountering a lot of Pokémon in the wild – even if you put in the effort to go and look for them specifically. Even though the Pokedéx is specific to what patch of grass you can find them in, it does not specify some special conditions, the inclusion of SOS Battles and other new encounter methods – making it hard not to rely on third party Pokedéxes to catch ‘em all. I can’t be the only one who spent a good hour just trying to find a Mimikyu, right?
Protagonists Being Numb to Everything
Chock full of several twists and turns, Sun & Moon had one of the best plot lines in the 20 years of the franchise. Encountering Ultra Beasts, meeting characters from games past, dealing with the Aether Foundation; as the story progressed we were left with face cracks of the centuries with each step we took into Alola – so why didn’t our in-game avatar react the same way? With very, very few exceptions the protagonist had the same aloof smile while everything was happening – no matter how sad, how dire, and how intense the situation was – Despite other characters around us having plenty of emotion and proper reactions. And, honestly, it was hard at times to focus on what was happening and to take things seriously when we had such a goofy, empty smile all the while. With Gen VII giving the most personal customization yet, even down to being able to choose the style in which you throw your Pokéball, it comes as a shock that Game Freak didn’t give our protagonist the ability to react to situations accordingly. Yes, Pokémon is famous for having a silent protagonist, but Red’s emotionless reaction to everything reads a bit better than an empty smile.
The Poké Finder
Another feature hyped for during the pre-release of Sun & Moon, the Poke Finder was marketed as one of the new aspects that came with the Rotom Pokedéx, and much like the Rotom ‘Dex it failed to dazzle fans. What most hoped would be a love letter to Pokémon Snap, turned into a very shallow, rather useless feature of the game. With the Poke Finder only working in a select few, pre-determined spots, the Pokémon and their poses being limited and repetitive, and no way to share the photos with other players, this in-game feature seems pretty useless. The only reason we’re still even bothering with it is to get that stamp on our trainer passport – and believe us, we’re just as unhappy with the amount of time we need to pour into it just to get it. All things considered, the Poké Finder was another great idea, but a poorly executed one.
General Lack of 3D and Touch Screen Use
Despite being on the Nintendo 3DS, 3D was completely removed in-game other than when firing up the Poke Finder (ironically, paired with its gyroscope capabilities, it’s quite possibly the worst place to enable 3D). Although several complaints about 3D causing slow down during battles specifically arose in Generation VI, and it never truly being well implemented in previous generations overall; its surprising 3D wasn’t utilized during important cut scenes at the very least. And, honestly, it’s a bit disappointing that Game Freak didn’t try to improve upon it, and instead decided to just remove the feature all together. One of the coolest features the 3DS has to offer is the 3D slider being so accessible and easy to use – letting you decide whether or not you want to enable the 3D. Some people don’t like it, some do, but just having the option is nice. And on a somewhat related note, Sun & Moon is a game that can almost completely be played using the top screen. Rarely is the bottom screen used and completely necessary…but perhaps that was intentional? Despite being a gorgeous game that pushed the system to the limits, Game Freak didn’t make the best use of the two defining factors and selling points of the 3DS.
Removal of Amazing Features From Past Generations
Sun & Moon took several leaps and bounds forward, but in the process of adding new features and expanding upon older ones, it seems like we’ve taken a step backwards in some areas. Horde Battles, although not a huge loss, was a fun and new battle style that provided a new challenge as well as an easier way to manually EV train and hunt shinies: however once entering Alola we found it completely removed. Moreover, the convenience of the DexNav, the PSS and Super Training is completely null and void now. Gone are the days of being able to easily tell if you’ve caught all Pokémon in the area with one glance – now you have to search the Pokedéx entry by entry to see if you caught ‘em all. Gone are the days of centralized EV training with Super Training – now you have to use in game currency across several different platforms to make your ‘mons the best. And gone are the days of being able to battle, trade and connect with other players with a single touch in the PSS, now we have to traverse through the awkward and troublesome Festival Plaza. And although the end result of all these axed features are still available by other means, how we went from everything being so seamless and convenient to clunky and complicated is beyond us.
No Side Quest Tracker
Despite being a staple in most RPGs, our quest through Alola really marked the first time in Pokémon where several NPCs gave us little side quests that spawned rewards if completed. A lot of these quests were as simple as catching a Pokémon and showing it to the NPC, and the money reward was definitely worthwhile, but as we traversed through the story some quests were left incomplete for a number of reasons. Now well into the post game, I have a desire to complete all the in-game trades and Pokedéx quests, but with no formal tracker I’ve forgotten where all these NPCs are, and what the actual quest was – once again making us rely on third party information hubs to figure it all out.
Despite these faults, Pokémon Sun & Moon’s wondrous region, story, characters, Pokémon and new features seem to completely eclipse any negative thoughts we may have about the latest entry in the series. What are some things that you found you didn’t like about Pokémon Sun & Moon and hope to see in the rumored Pokémon Stars?

woah alot of reading.
1) Rotom Dex is very cool although I wish he didn’t exist in the anime and wasn’t too sentient.
2) I got a lvl 100 Mimikyu from a generous man so I have no idea what you’re talking about.
3) Too expensive
40
“we were left gagging left and right with each step we took into Alola”
._. did you mean gasping?
no he definitely meant gagging
Lol no, he meant gagging
I have to agree on the low rates of new pokemon, very tedious even with bubbles Dhelmise was 10% while Magikarp was 50% still a big gap.
I was looking for shiny pichu. First 255 chain nothing. Second time I found a shiny at perfect 255…It’s Happiny. Why?????
It has a neutral nature and 31ivs in Hp/Def/Sp.Def/Attack. I think I will make an Eviolite Chansey.
I knew since the beginning that I’ve have found a 10% Happiny rather then a 90% Pichu/Pikachu. I’m only lucky when I don’t have too…
I don’t see a mention of the obvious anti white male values smh
what? only done half the game, but where did that come from?
It came from a white supremacist.
Lmao , exactly. Anti white values? What does that even mean you troll haha. Also really confused at the people who gave that comment an up vote
Idiots!

I hate that Sun and Moon Don’t have the National Dex
I hate that the ultra beast mission were post game. And very easy!
I still miss the gym badges. Trials are cool, But I miss the gym leaders and badges.
I hate that there is a lot of water, but little places to surf on. Why can’t you surf from island to island?
I hate it that you can’t fish anywhere you want.
I hate that mega evolution didn’t get a big role in the game.
I miss soaring in the sky!
I Don’t get it why alolan forms are only gen 1 pokemon
I think it is stupid that the island Guardians Don’t play a big role. And you all have to catch m post game.
I dislike how short Alolan Exeggutor was.

I really hope that you guys make a positive article about sun and moon because so far there have been two overwhelmingly negative articles but I don’t recall seeing one that touched on any positive experiences with the game, but correct me if I’m wrong.
Also I found mimikyu pretty easy to find, as was comfey, but passminion gave me some trouble finding
I find it awesome that some of the new pokemon are so hard to find because it makes getting them that much more rewarding, and there will be little kids who marvel at finding one.
And Rotom dex was both cute and charming, I love every piece of dialogue it has given me. Honestly I would have probably enjoyed this article more if it had been coupled with things you did like in the game as well… there is already so much negativity in this world, why do we always focus on that instead of bringing up the positives and what games could do better as opposed to what they do wrong. I will never understand…
Rotom Dex: I think the main thing I dislike about it is that it replaces much more useful bottom screen functions from XY and ORAS (namelly PSS and Dex Nav). The mini map was definitely good in-game but I agree it becomes useless Post-Game.
Low Encounter Rates: This was another thing made using only Alola Pokemon very difficult. Especially ones that you liked pre released only to discover they were near impossible to find through conventional means.
Facial Expressions: Agree that it was very annoying having that blank expression when all hell was breaking loose.
Pokefinder: Can’t comment, I used it whenever I found a spot where I could. It just a mini-game in my opinion.
Touchscreen: Again mainly to do with removal of features in place of the Rotom Dex.
Side Quest Tracker: Would definilty be usefull to keep track of what’s been done but not a big deal I’m my opinion.
A few more things that I could add would be lack of good leveling up spots post-game.
SOS being slightly inferior to Hordes (imo) and lack of Friend Safari.
Uhhh hellooo no new Megas??? Alolan forms are stupid.
says you
Correct
Alola forms are…lukewarm. Unnecessary feature, imo. They’re not as good as crossgen evos or even megas. I give them an A for effort for trying something else, but overall it was poorly executed.
Alolan forms are actually a fantastic feature and Idea. Unfortunately it was just the execution that was off. Same as mega evolution. Great idea but executed all wrong. Completely disorganized and random
Still 10/10 for me
Also jesus, isn’t static supposed to make electric type pokemon appear 50% of the time where is my dang Pichu?
I always hate articles like these.
Personally I think it’s good to discuss the negative as much as discussing the positive.
I like to sit back and think about things that could have been slightly better. After the initial hype of the games, articles liked these put things back into perspective. At least in my opinion.
yeah because in 3 years we are all going to hate Sun and Moon and Love X and Y so
Exactly :p
Wat…..
Actually the hate for XY was really immediate, usually it goes hate/love hate
no it wasn’t, I’m sorry fairy but even in this community when XY came out they were loved. People only started to come down slightly from that a few months after it came out. Its a bad cycle that needs to end, but a cycle none the less.
I was all over X and Y and in love with the story. I loved everything about it for a while until I replayed Y a couple years later
Really? I saw scorn for it on the majority of other places, it’s not like the jungle is the only pokemon community on the web >_>
were you on the cess pool that is IGN? because they hate everything… but no, everywhere you looked for a few months after XY they were loved, heck I even worked in electronics at the time and we couldnt keep the games on the shelves
Lol no
It was immediately pointed out many places for its lackluster story, ridiculous easiness, and terrible characters
clearly we ran in different circles because I hadn’t seen or heard a negative thing about it until at least 6-7 months after…
But honestly, XY were great. S/M were awesome until I beat the game the first time but after that I went back and restarted X and Oras, to which I prefer both the look and the gameplay. But S/M are still really great
Talking about what’s not perfect helps us accept those flaws and provide feedback for Gamefreak. It helps make a better game
flaws can be brought to light and discussed in a positive manner that helps everyone, that was not done here
It would be if we were to discuss the negative points and say what we liked and disliked about them. And what could be improved.
I think the article was meant to initiate discussion…
How? He could’ve said, “things that SUCK about Sun and Moon.” I think it was respectful and good critical feedback. I would’ve gone farther, there are a few other large flaws.
because the entire article was based on the negatives, and that doesnt fly with me, if you only focus on the negatives that is all anyone is going to see and if you keep focusing on them enough all the positives get filtered out until we’re left with the XY effect. Everyone loved XY when they first came out, even if they don’t remember it (i remember) and then the community slowly over time only focused on the negative aspects of the game, while all the positives got thrown aside by the community and made it what it is today. There is a way to discuss negatives, but you cant turn your entire focus on them because todays society embraces negatives much more than positives and it ruins the experience for everyone
The positives far outweigh the negatives, so it doesn’t really matter. But S/M will never turn into X&Y, because it is better in nearly every aspect..
….oh but it will… in due time, just you watch… I remember when XY was loved on this community specifically… now look at what has happened
I’ll never hate it at least..
opinions change
Mine do to a point
I hated X and Y literally after like two weeks
I never loved X&Y. No post game, bad starters. It was off to a bad start even before it released. Playing through the weak story just confirmed it.
I liked Chespin and Goodra….. ANd Noivern and Dragalge and …. wait was there any other good mons in that besides Greninja?
If someone showed me the beginning starters and end starters I’d doubt they were related tbh
I was in such denial when they leaked.
Same tbh
I’ve grown to like Chesnaught and Greninja but not as evos to Chespin and Croatia
*Froakie
Lol Croatia
Or, or:
People realised XY aren’t that good in their own opinions and people are capable of forming their own opinions
But we have articles discussing the things we like all the time so why are you throwing a hissy fit ?
I hate comments like these
Rotom is secretly Shaggy from Scooby Doo
lol wut
It says Zoinks several times in the game
Seriously??? That’s awesome 😀
Yep! In possibly the worst times too XD
When you first arrive at the Battle Royale place he says it, and again, I kid you not, when you first arrive at the staircase leading to the Pillar of he Moone/Sunne
Any Life Is Strange fans? The Female Swimmer kinda looks like Victoria Chase

Enough negativity in the community without posts like this
How are talking about things you don’t like that can be improved on considered as being “negative”. Have a seat please and let people voice their opinions
Anyone here was brothered about the Rotom dex talking a lot? Because i wasnt at all
It’s annoying that it repeats the same thing over and over again. Especially in Post-Game.
I loved the room dex and its dialogue
😀
I was bothered that sometimes when I clicked on it rotom would zoom in on its face and then other times it would open the map…all in all inferior to the ORAS touchscreen
Yeah, i had the same problem multiple times :/
I think it would have been better had we the option to choose what we wanted on the bottom screen.
Keep the menu open
Rotom Dex
E.t.c.
its meant to do that, its all in where you click, if you click on the centre rotom will give you advice, if you click off to the side on the map he will show you the map, and if you click on his body he will do a little spin. Rotom actually explained this in game.
Could’ve been better explained then, I didn’t see that at all
he straight up tells you as you get the dex, its not their fault that people don’t read
I perfectly agree with all these (except rotom dex it doesnt bother me really). There also some more things I dont like not listed like severe like of leveling pokemon post game. Also guys who dont like negative articles, everything has negatives. Talking about negatives is something that should and has to happen. It’s true reviewing
‘RotoDex never bothered me anyway’
But I completely agree, it’s important to acknowledge everything is flawed
If anything it makes you appreciate the positives in life more
I know it’s early for a derailment of topic but

What no this isnt the evil version
I really expected it to end differently
Me too, i expected a jumpscare or something like that
The original version had the block move one to the left and not clear all of the blocks
Tbh I feel it’s obvious now that the lack of touch screen and 3D is to prep us for the switch
Either that, or they just felt that their’s no reason to force features into the bottom screen that aren’t needed, kind of like a lot fo dev’s eventually did with the wii’s motion controls and the Wii U game pad. If its not needed, non reason to force it in.
I love that you can just push Y and select a pokeball
That was a game changer
In terms of story, the games are good. In everything else, specially when it comes to practical things, the Gen VI games were so much better. These games are annoying af.
melemele see is so much fun to say in French
Mer de Mele-Mele
What I didn’t like:
1) Alolan Forms. A few are good, but some of them just suck. Also, I don’t like that they’re all Kanto
2) No good place to level up. Maybe Blissey bases were an unintentional feature of ORAS, but there was still O-powers and the level release.
3) More options for EV training. The pokepelago island isn’t bad, but unless you have time to kill it’s a pain. Would’ve been nice to see super training come back. Don’t think it would’ve been hard to also include it.
4) Bottlecaps not transferring IVs when breeding >:I
5) Not enough new pokes. Too many old ones overshadowing the new (largely due to low encounter rates)
6) No soar or dive pokerides. Seems unimportant but would’ve made alola even more gorgeous
7) One lucky egg and no free destiny knot? Lame. Super lame.
8) No national dex. There are 32 boxes so the game can definitely hold them…why can we register them too? I mean I’m very glad it’s easier to get the shiny charm, but where’s the reward for those of us that take the time to catch ’em all??
These are my main complaints. It’s not a perfect game and I’m just being critical because I like it so much. The positives definitely outweigh all of these criticisms.
1) I personally like most more than the originals
2) Yeah… this was bad
3) Yeah I kinda agree but I like PokePelago since I have school
4) Yeaaaah
5) I dont mind this at all really. We have 800+ at this point
6) Yeah that would’ve been nice
7) Why do you need more than one?
8) Why does it really matter if we dont have a national dex? It can be updated in with pokebank
Well more than one lucky egg is nice so you don’t have to keep moving it around between party members when grinding. It’s a very minor complaint, but it could’ve been a pelipper hold item again at least. I guess the national dex isn’t a huge deal, it just doesn’t make sense in terms of continuity. Is kukui that incompetent that he can’t upgrade it for us like the past 5 professors?
*Cracks knuckles* My powers are needed STAND BACK EVERYONE!!!
-First of all once again a short Pokedex, with gimmicks in place to substitute bigger dexs aka Alola forms and Z-moves (don’t deny it you know they did it to avoid making new pokemon when its easy to reskin existing pokemon and write it off as a “Celebration to the 20th anneversity”)
-Next i honestly thought the story was EXTREMELY half-assed, they had so much potential but in the end it boiled down to very tiring cliches. they completely threw the whole Ultra beast concept in the toilet they barely had anything involving their impact and destruction just a cheesy cutscene and a single UB fight they were jerking us off with the ideas of Ultra Beasts attacking and stopped halfway leaving half a erection, leaving a major disappointment
-Team Skull though very amusing they really do anything bigger than hold up Po Town that part i liked but that was the highest point of their involvement hell
-Ultra Space and Ultra Lusamine, NOTHING BUT EYE CANDY, They had immense Potential for a seconday Ultra Space realm where you’d navigate a bizzare world to find Guzma and Lusamine and when we got there nothing but a short strolling cutscene and a sub decent boss fight WHICH BY THE WAY didn’t even have a Nilhilego on Her team which was A TOTAL BS moment since She had only 5 Pokemon and should’ve had one on there was no reason for it not to other than sheer laziness
– Nearly every Pokemon is competitively weak, seriously nearly all the starters have very poor stats and movepools and only like a small handful pokemon make the cut on a decent team without serious set up and carrying
-Hyper training, They dangled this miracle service over our heads thinking it would be extremely helpful and only to find out that the currency costs a lot of time and effort to accumulate not to mention having to be level 100 is a major pain in the arse to do, AND THE SHEER FACT THAT YOU CANNOT PASS DOWN SAID HYPER TRAINING IVS IS ABSOLUTELY STUPID, THEY COULD’VE DEALT A MIGHTY BLOW THAT IS THE WORLD WIDE RELIANCE ON HACKING FLAWLESS DITTO BUT THEY SPAT UPON OUR DREAMS
-Alola Forms, At first i accepted and enjoyed the aspect of pokemon living in such a closed and varied environment causes changes. but that changed when they started just making them change based on effects that could’ve been done anywhere IE Meowth being raised by royalty, grimer eating waste products, Geodude and Raichu didn’t even get a proper reasoning since Alolan Geodude do not mention how they squired the magnetic properties while they blatantly said fuck it to Raichu’s typing and they don’t even care
-and lastly the unnecessary lack of special Box Wallpaper after beating the game, a tradition that existed for more than a decade squandered
I am EarthenWarrior and this is my rant on Sun and Moon, thank you and good night
I have a lot of problems with what you’ve said here, but I respect your right to voice your opinion hahaha
a angry voice filled with vulgarity, spitfire and the stench of halitosis
Yea I pretty much agree with these. Honestly Nintendo just has a habit of dangling potential in our face then taking it away right before we grab it
aka jerking us off and stopping halfway
-Tbh I feel like this part is subjective, a decent few prefer shorter dexes due to being able to remember the Pokémon better. There’s also the ridiculous quality vs quantity idea, but that’s subjective. I can see why this annoyed you though.
-I thought the story was really good, and imo they didn’t need to squeeze any more UBs in because it was already getting busy. Also, it kept a lot of them as post game surprises.
-Ultra Space was fine as it is imo, I prefer how they didn’t just make the Distortion World v2. They focused on the character drama. Also, Lusamine used Nihilego’s venom to power up all her Pokémon.
-The Level 100 thing is ridiculous, but if 6IVs were easy what’s the point in IVs in the first place? Competitive is meant to be hard to get into so it doesn’t get flooded with tons of noobs
-The Alolan royal family could’ve raised Meowth in a way because it wasn’t native and didn’t treat it as it usually was, and Alola’s waste is most likely different. Furthermore, we didn’t have regional variants yet so it’s understandable why they’ve also just been done. For Geodude they probably expected you to put two and two together (probably eating diff minerals like pretty much every inorganic Pokémon seems to) and A-Raichu is clearly a joke mon.
-Who honestly cares about such a little thing? It’s a practically useless addition that just exists for the sake of existing.
i disagree with everything u said
Kk
I will say I agree with all you said EXCEPT the bottle cap part, because they honestly feel quite pointless
How could anybody like a shorter dex, it was the reason people hated the Kalos dex
TOO BUSY TO INCLUDE THE WHOLE FUCKING POINT OF THE STORY GET YOUR GOD DAMN HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASSHOLE
ULTRA SPACE WAS NOT FINE, It barely impacted the overworld where it could’ve been a great idea but they half assed it because NEWSFLASH TONS OF PEOPLE LIKED DISTORTION WORLD
And Ultra Lusamine is still fucking eye candy and the sheer fact they didn’t give her a pokemon, THE ONE THAT CAUSED HER HER IMMENSE PERSONALITY SHIFT INTO OBSESSION ON HER FINAL FIGHT TEAM WAS INEXCUSABLE Any form of denial is clear you are just blindly worshiping them to the point you cannot see the very many errors they made
-Because opinion exists you fucking fool
-The point of the story line is Nihilego, just as there’s been legends in the past when only one is focused on per game. It’s made clear the other Beasts are collateral just as side legends have been, as Mohn was primarily looking into Nihilego and its the only one Lusamine shows interest in
-They liked it because it was unique, genius. A rehash would’ve been much less popular especially when the DW may return this Gen
-Her fusing with it is a much better indicator of her madness than her just using it, which is the whole point
I’d say you’re just in a tantrum, so pot kettle black on the blind part. Your opinion isn’t objective.
I and plenty of others agree that smaller dexs are a big disappointment
Nihilego along with the other ultra beasts where HEAVILY SQUANDERED main Game, they spent all this time telling us they were a threat and a major part of the game only to give, a single and forgettable fight which was extremely easy and that’s it, the rest were a hyped cut-scene where they barely had any gameplay to it,
and the whole Ultra Space barely had any kinda impact since you pop in and out, no final puzzle which was also denied such as the Team Rocket HQs RB and HS, Aqua and Magma Base and Galactic HQ all final dungeons but they did not have one, no amount of story will ever substitute as a good level which is 50% of a successful game
And Ultra Lusamine was extremely lackluster, you can sit and think i’m just being salty, ask yourself, other than a story implement how long did it last? a short transformation and once it was beaten which was stupidly easy that was it, no more after that end of story and you never go back seriosuly not having a Nihiligo is very wrong, i can’t be honestly the only one who doesn’t see this
and i am in a tantrum because i’m one of the very few with enough guts to tell you all what they did wrong and why i hate it, how they could’ve done more but they didn’t sure you could say time restrictions but this is just half assery at their finest
I hated the small amount of Kalos Pokemon because most of them sucked and lacked potential and a lot of the designs were half assed. This generation though, the sheer quality of the gen 7 Pokemon is just outstanding. I mean yeah I wish more of them evolved but most of them are all around terrific Pokemon with some great new typings, moves, and abilitys
