Pokémon Mascot Showdown: Generation VI

Greetings everyone, here is another Mascot Pokémon Showdown. The winner of last time is Zekrom with 35%!
Now it’s time for Kalos. Generation VI released in 2013 with a worldwide release for the first time. This generation contained just two main games, namely X and Y, and featured some great new stuff like the Fairy-typing, Mega Evolution and trainer customization.

Pokémon X Version

Pokémon X showcased Xerneas, the Life Pokémon. It’s the first Fairy-type Legendary and is a stag-like creature shaped like an X. The horns on its head contain the colors of the rainbow and can grant someone eternal life. When it’s at the end of its own life, it transforms into a tree and sleeps for 1000 years.

There is no other Pokémon known than Xerneas that can learn the move Geomancy, making it the only Legendary Mascot whose signature move is a status move. It has the same stat distribution as Yveltal, but has the highest base stat total and Attack stat of all non-Mega Evolved Fairy-type Pokémon. Its name may come from the letter ‘X‘ and ‘cervus‘ (Latin for ‘deer’).

Pokémon Y Version

Pokémon Y featured Yveltal, the Destruction Pokémon. It is an avian Pokémon with the Dark/Flying type combo. Its wings and tail make the letter Y when fully extended. It has the power to absorb life energy. In contrast to Xerneas, Yveltal sucks all the life energy of every living thing around it when it is at the end of its life, creating a cocoon of itself so it can sleep for 1000 years.

Yveltal‘s signature move is called Oblivion Wing. It has the highest base HP stat of all Dark-type Pokémon and is actually also the only Dark-type Mascot Legendary Pokémon known yet. Its name possibly derives from the letter ‘Y‘, ‘yvel‘ (Middle English for ‘evil’) and ‘talon‘.

  1. Kalos sucked in many ways. But they got the legends designs right. Though the lore is crap and so was the story, Xerneas is remarkably beautiful and my favourite legendary neck and neck with Reshiram.

Also, been thinking that though sun and moon got character development perfect ( a huge strength) aside from being able to travel dimensions they don’t really help much. They should have had something to do with the Sun and moon themselves, maybe they were linked to their energies or something, or controlled their influences on earth. Also how many cosmoem are there ? I want there to only be three ( perhaps per universe), I liked the idea of the original 2 and the heir.

  2. Anyone has a HA Sandshrew (female) with egg moves for trade ? I can give you HA carvanha with egg moves or HA Vulpix with egg moves or HA Mareani with egg moves.

    • Zekrom is on par with Yveltal. But Xerneas is much better than Reshiram.

Also Gen 5 had brilliant designs. Some of my favourites come from that gen.

        • Metagross is my all time favourite Pokemon.
My profile picture’s been this since ORAS came out.
Gen 6 and 7 had Pokemon on par with every other gen. And the worst of all is the small quantity wasn’t really made up by cool designs.

          • There’s a perfectly perfect reason why there’s been a bit less;

            3D GRAPHICS AND BEAUTIFUL FEATURES!
I don’t know how so many people overlook it, GF now puts actual effort into make the background and entire game beautiful 3D, as previously they lazily just updated the 8bit and had more than enough team and time to make more Pokemon.

          • Fair enough. That can be a valid reason.

But people say the quality of designs improved in Gen 6 so that’s why there are less. Unfortunately that’s not the case.

          • I think the main reason is just of them switching to 3D, I feel like there was a limited amount of Pokemon they could do when the game was 3.2 GB!

  3. Wish I could vote both because I have no distinct preference. Despite XY not being very good games, the legendaries were very well designed imo

    • XY may not have been the best games story and character wise. But they introduced some of the best battle and breeding mechanics. I also really liked the XY 3D models more than the SuMo ones at the moment.

But yes, I agree these legends were both great in terms of design. They’re actually better than the SuMo legends imo.

      • They also weren’t the best region wise, difficulty wise, post game wise. . .
I could go on and on. What I can say is that I do agree with the battle mechanics and breeding mechanics outside of mega evolution. Also the communications were good, the PSS really makes me hate the FP.

        • I think the region was fine. Difficulty is debatable, as I think Gen 7 is the same difficulty. Post-Game is also as poor as the current Gen 7 Post-Game outside of the UB quest.

XY trumps SuMo in terms of 3D models, new mechanics, accesibility and networking (imo) and mega evolution > Z-moves.

          • Mega evolution was a very poorly planned out mechanic IMO, but to be fair, so are Z moves.
The region was very bland, there was no coherence, and nothing really memorable about it at all. As for post game, SM has:
            – UB quest
            – Battle tree
            – Battle royale dome
            – Catching Tapus
            – Exploring the rest of Poni
            XY has:
            – Battle maison
            – Looker quest
            – Catching Zygarde and the kanto legendaries

The difficulty is debatable, that’s true, but for my personal experience, SM was the hardest pokemon game I’ve ever planned. Rather than simply beefing up the levels and calling it “difficulty”, they added complex strategies that you had to work around. (I had EXP share off in both XY and SM, and XY was the easiest game I’ve ever played)

In the end, it’s all just opinion, but I’m just trying to defend my viewpoint. 😛

          • Yeh I’m just defending my point too. Sometimes I think people are too harsh on XY. Post game it also had mega stone hunting, friend safari (which was a more engaging way to get people to exchange friend codes). Also had better leveling up options with the Battle Chateau and Restaurants.

Mega Evolutions was always something that I wanted to use and would plan my team with it in mind. This gen, I haven’t even thought about Z moves outside of the odd NPC using them against me.

There was plenty of good things about XY back in the day and sometimes it feels most people are biased towards SuMo cos it’s the new thing. To me it feels they are holding more things back (HAs for example) than they did in XY.

          • X and Y was pretty easy for me, but sun and moon gave me a challenge and I like that, and the battle tree trainers are way better , they know how to set up, stall etc, made feel like I’m really working for BP. The battle mason was dull and boring. I like the kalos region more than unova, hoenn and kanto, but I like alola alot more, I like it just as much as johto but not as much as sinnoh

  4. This reminds me of how disappointed i am in zygarde. Zygarde didn’t get even get a story in the post game. Zygarde just is so irrelevant. I wouldn’t even be this mad over it but all the form changes to it only to find he was reduced to a side quest. Disappointing. My vote goes to Death Bird.

    • Death bird for the win.

Zyagrde and Lysandre were cool in the anime and completely wasted in the games.

Its Sad. Lysandre could have been a great character. A third game following XY could have been amazing

  5. Honestly I am dissapointed in these two legendaries plus Zygarde. Before XY came out I was expecting a good and deep backstory behind Xerneas and Yveltal because they are the Life and Death Pokemon. But sadly, they don’t get any of that, as the two only appear (and are really mention) in the TF base, and that’s just really the whole “Oh they’re the mascot legendaries, the game’s going to force you to catch them”. And then nothing else is talked about their past. Nothing. And also for Zygarde, I was pretty hopeful that he would get a chance to shine with a story in SM. But that’s just a side quest, and you don’t even get the slightest backstory of the Order Pokemon. It’s a shame that these 3 legendaries don’t have any story behind them, other then they are the Life, Destruction, and Order Pokemon.

  6. Looking back at Xerneas and Yveltal, I hope they will continue to give the mascot legends a backstory like Solgaleo’s and Lunala’s in the future. Gen 7 is now my favorite gen, partly because of how well implemented those legendaries are in the story.
