Mascot Pokémon Showdown: Generation I

After the Gym Leader and Elite Four Showdown, we’re bringing you a new series: Mascot Pokémon Showdown! We’ll look at the cover Pokémon of the original box art from Pokémon Red to Pokémon Moon (ignoring remakes). Who will come out on top as the top Mascot Pokémon? Let’s find out!

First up, is Kanto. Generation I consisted of four games: Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow. These four installments were the only in the series to not feature a Legendary Pokémon, instead, they each contained an image of a Starter Pokémon. Released in Japan in 1996, and in 1998 in the US, they were the first Pokémon games that sucked us into the world we’re still in today.

Pokémon Red Version

500px-red_en_boxartPokémon Red featured the original Fire-type Starter, Charizard, the Flame Pokémon, on its cover art.

Its design is based on a European dragon as told about in legends. The tip of its tail has a flame that burns hotter as it gains battle experience. Mostly inhabiting mountain sides, Charizard is one of the biggest causes of forest fires, even though it’s not their intention.

Its signature move is Blast Burn, introduced in Generation III, which has now become an exclusive move for every Fire-type Starter. Despite being part Flying-type Charizard wasn’t able to learn Fly in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green. Both of Charizard’s Mega Evolutions have the highest base stat totals of all non-legendary Fire-type Pokémon. Its name comes from ‘charcoal‘ and ‘lizard‘.

Pokémon Blue Version

500px-blue_en_boxartPokémon Blue featured Blastoise, the Shellfish Pokémon. It’s the original Water Starter and it’s based on a turtle with resemblances of a tank.

Because the water jets it shoots from its cannons are so strong, it has to make itself heavy in order to withstand the force – they can even burst through concrete walls!

With the signature moves Skull Bash and Hydro Cannon, Mega Blastoise has the highest Special Attack base stat of all non-legendary Water Pokémon. Its name is a combination of ‘blast‘ and ‘tortoise‘.

Pokémon Green Version

Pokémon Green showed Venusaur on its cover, the Seed Pokémon. 250px-green_jp_boxartAs the first Grass Starter, it’s based on some form of prehistorian reptile with a Rafflesia Arnoldii on its back. It uses its flower to catch sunlight, which it then converts into energy; making its flower more vibrant.

Its signature move is Frenzy Plant. Mega Venusaur has the highest base stat total and Defense stat of all Poison-type Pokémon. Its name comes from ‘Venus flytrap plant‘, ‘venom‘ and ‘dinosaur‘.

Pokémon Yellow Version

500px-yellow_en_boxartOn the cover of Pokémon Yellow is the Pokémon franchise’s mascot: the Mouse Pokémon – Pikachu! This game marked the first and only time where you didn’t actually get to choose your Starter Pokémon – your rival only had one choice as well (although it could evolve into different options), Eevee.

Pikachu is based on various rodents, despite its category suggesting it’s just designed as a mouse. Pikachu stores electricity in its cheeks to release at enemies. It also uses this power to roast hard berries to make them easier to eat.

Volt Tackle is the name of its signature move. Its name comes from ‘pikapika‘, an onomatopoeia for an electric spark, and ‘chuchu‘, which could either be the onomatopoeia for squeaking, or simply a kiss.

That’s it for the first instalment of Mascot Pokémon Showdown. We hope you guys enjoyed the new Showdown format! Keep a look out for Generation II in a few days time!

  1. Curious question: if you guys were to apply to be a Gym Leader in a hypothetical region, what type would you specialise in, what number would you be, and what TM would you use?

      • Noice, any idea on team or badge name or nah? (would’ve included that in the op but that’s be too much to ask for the initial post imo :p)

          • Excuse u I don’t believ Drilbur is Steel Type :p

But in all honesty though, I’m surprise GameFreak doesn’t take advantage of Pokémon that evolve into the speciality type, by doing that you’ve got a fire counter that still fits into your theme.

          • Exactly. It still fits the theme of steel types and The Ore badge, because it’s basically a drill. Scyther wouldn’t work even though it evolves into a Steel Type.

My Gym would obviously be a Quary and the player has to traverse to the bottom by rearranging platforms using mechanical switches.

    • Simple
      Ground
And Earthen don’t settle less then number 8
      Rhyperior/Warhog
      Piloswine
      Graveler
      Gabite
      Sandslash
      Onix

i would force my competitors to fight their way through 3 agonizing pitch black floors in my Underground Arena and you better know strength kuz i haul boulders in every morning to make it all the more harder
and those who manage to defeat my Earthen Warriors i’ll begrudgingly award them the Terrain badge along the most powerful TM, TM 26 Earthquake then tell then to GIT OUGHT

        • it’s the right amount
Because half the time you buttmunches just load up on every powerful Pokemon in the Type pool then making it sound realistic

          • Yeah but like you’re bringing up the exact opposite problem of your issue, your team is quite underpowered. Most eighth gym leaders will have either all fully evolved Pokémon and stand alones, or mostly fully evolved Pokémon and maybe one not fully evolved 😡

Maybe have all fully evolved and have four team members, or five and have two NFEs?

          • Warhog: the Macho PKM
            Ground/Fighting
Ability Guts/Sheer Force HA: Anger Point
            HP 120
            Attack 145
            Defense 100
            Sp Atk 30
            Sp Def 95
            Speed 70
            Bst 560
A massive pig like humanoid with dark pinkish skin with splotches of dark brown mud on its body in the shape of a leotard, majorly muscular arms, legs and pectorals, its would have a 4 clawed hoof like fists and hoofs for feet, its warthog like face has a long snout with 4 tusks coming out of the mouth 2 big and 2 small, its eyes would be bright red and it would sport a large Crimson Mohawk that runs down the top of his head all the way to the base of his back ending with a tail with a small tuft

          • I think it’s pretty cool! The thing seems to hate special sweepers and the like but the concept seems cool and I love the play on Warthog

          • and this is it’s dex entry
“Warhog pride themselves on having powerful bodies, to train they punch boulders to rubble; Using their great strength they can fight one hundred foes without rest”

And to top it all off a Signature attack
            Piledriver
            Fighting
            Physical Base damage 150
The target is grabbed and launched high into the air and the user crashes down to the ground with tremendous force, the user must recharge afterwards

      • That’s a bad team. Final Gym leaders never have 6. I would go.

        Piloswine lvl 42
        Gabite lvl 42
        Sandslash lvl 43
        Golem lvl 44
        Rhyperior lvl 45

    • Dark! and 8th gym leader
      Zoroark
      Krookodile
      Houndoom
      Drapion
      Hydreigon
      Bisharp

And the TM would be dark void 🙂
My team is a bit overpowered so I’d maybe use a Zweilous and Krokorok instead

      Reply
      • maybe whittle some of them the problem with making a real sounding gym is everyone goes overboard and just adds every powerful pokemon

        Reply
        • I just put my favorite ones. That’d be my team for the most powerful trainers, but I’d use less pkm and weaker ones depending on the trainer’s level. They just gotta have a good fairy-type and I’m doomed so

          Reply
          • Hmm, I feel Pawniard is quite underpowered. Maybe just have five with one NFE, seeing how Dark tends to be a ‘frail, but strong’ type?

          • hmmm
            Zoroark
            Drapion
            Zweilous
            Bisharp
            Spiritomb

I’d need a good strategy against fairy and fighting types tbh. I changed Sneasel to spiritomb so I don’t have to worry about the fighting types for that one.

          • I feel that Bisharp and Drapion are good Fairy counters seeing as they’ll outspeed a good number of them and can certainly deal damage

Also a Toxic Spikes Drapion lead would be a terror

          • Seeing as Illusion works differently in the anime I’d make Zoroark transform into a legendary just to make the silly trainers shit their pants

          • Even from a game standpoint they could make your Zororark special and have it pretend to be Darkrai, possibly even using a moveset near identical to Darkrai’s (Dark Pulse, Sludge Bomb, and maybe Nasty Plot with a Hidden Flamethrower or Extrasensory for coverage?)

    • Okay, here’s mine:

      Gym #1
      Pixie Badge

      Cottonee Lv.12
      Mimikyu Lv. 13
      Marill Lv. 15

The puzzle would be a misty, overgrown maze you have to navigate, with me at the centre. Simple maze for the first Gym. TM is Draining Kiss.

    • I’d be the standard 8th Dragon Gym Leader.
      Haxorus (DGN)
      Dragalge (PSN/DGN)
      Drampa (NRM/DGN)
      Dragonite (DGN/FLY)
      Garchomp (DGN/GND)
      Hydreigon (DRK/DGN)
I’d give a new TM for Dragon Dance or Draco Meteor and my badge would be called the Slay Badge. My Gym would be a castle in which you have to rescue the princess, but on the way you encounter lots of dragons (from trainers).

    • 7th Gym Leader with Water as my type, I’d probably give Scald as a TM
Pokémon: Main – Jellicent, Wishiwashi, Lanturn and Gorebyss

      Reply
    • Not sure what numbered I’d like, but my gym would be Ghost/Dark, TM would probably be Will-o-wisp or Snarl.

I would only run a full team match.

      M. Sableye, Dusknoir, Gengar, Zoroark, Bisharp, and Weavile. (I’m basing my team off the anime and not the game’s stats. XD)

    • I’d be a Gym Leader of Water
      Tm: Water Pulse
      Badge: Aqua badge
      1 match
      Poliwhirl (Water)
      Corphish (Water)
      Tympole (Water)

      2 match
      Politoed (Water)
      Crawdaunt (Water/Dark)
      Palpitoad (Water/Ground)
      Lombre (Water/Grass)
      Chinchou (Water/Electric)
      Seadra (Water)

      3 Match
      Politoed (Water)
      Crawdaunt (Water/Dark)
      Seismitoad (Water/Ground)
      Ludicolo (Water/Grass)
      Lanturn (Water/Electric)
      Kingdra (Water/Dragon)

      • I’d be the special Gym with an Ice/Fairy mix.
        Glaceon (ICE)
        Aurorus (ICE-ROCK)
        Allolan Ninetales (ICE-FAIRY)
        Froslass (ICE-GHOST)
        Florges (Fairy)
        Mega-Diancie (FAIRY-ROCK)
I’d given a new TM possibly an Ice-Fairy mixtape called Icy Pixie Dust and my badge would be the Elegant Snowflake badge. My gym would be in an icy places filled with small igloos where either a Fairy-type or Icy-type is blocking, and you need to get the key to get to the Gym Leader.

I would give the TM Wild charge and like the Shock badge or something
      My team:

      Luxray
      Eelektross
      Galvantula
      Lanturn

      2nd: Chandelure
      3rd: Aegislash
      4th: Cofagrigus
      5th: Mismagius
      6th: Drifblim

    • If I were a Gym leader, I would be the 8th gym to fight against, and I would be a Dragon type specialist (along with Dragon-like Pokemon). I would reward them with TM Dragon Dance. In addition, if they fight against me in a rematch, I would give them a Mega Ring in the post-game. My team would be:
      -Vibrava
      -Hakamo-O
      -Charizard
      -Seadra
      -Kommo-O

      Rematch:
      -Flygon
      -Kingdra
      -Noivern
      -Dragonite
      -Kommo-O
      -Mega Sceptile

    • I’d be a Dragon gym leader in Unova. Dragon Claw would be my TM. I guess I’d be gym leader 8, but after taking over the Opelucid Gym, I’d move it to White Forest. My team would consist of:
      Shiny Dragonite
      Shiny Haxorus
      Flygon
      Hydreigon
      Tyrantrum
      Mega Charizard X

      Gym Badge: Frost Badge
      TM: Ice Beam

      Beartic
      Weavile
      Abomasnow
      Mamoswine
      Glaceon

    • Flying-type, which sounds like an odd choice. But I dig those Flying ones, especially the core Pokemon of each Gen (Pidgeot, and the likes, even Pikipek’s Toucan evo).

Can’t really answer the other two questions though, because I can’t decide. LOL.

  2. I think there’s a problem with the mobile version of the site. I was going to vote for Venusaur, but when I scrolled down, the poll said I had already voted for Charizard and refreshing it and removing just tells me I’ve already voted. Is there a way to fix that?

      • no one on this earth can ever say its underrated, its the only pokemon the Genwunners cling on to as their last tie to the pokemon franchise

        Reply
        • I feel people hate it only because other people like it. Which is not really a great reason for disliking something, but whatever suits them I guess.

Not directed at anyone in particular :p

Still love me some Charizard. Yeh it’s mainly nostalgia I admit, but Charizard was cool to me as a kid and I still love it.

          Reply
          • True I can see that, I guess my dislike comes from the fact that I hella love Water starters, I choose them each generation….despite some of them having bad designs. I always grow to love them tho. *looks at Oshawott*

          • Tepig had so much potential! I was hella hoping for a Fire/Ground Boar….but then we got Emboar. I was like, Well it’s a Boar. Gen V had bad starters, Snivy was good up until Serperior, I was also hoping for Grass/Dragon

          • tbh there are a lot of pokemon that I was kind of just meh about at first but I slowly started to strongly dislike them because they were so fan serviced and shoved down everyones throats. Like Lucario, I was meh and then it like took over for no reason and I was like ok it will die now when gen 5 came out and Zoroark was announced and I was all pumped to see him in the next smash game, but no they had to give us Lucario again

          • Can’t argue with that to be honest. I’m guilty of disliking Fairies cos they are being shoved down our throats.
I have other reasons as well, but that plays a part.

          • I’ll try to step back and see it from your perspective, even though fairies are my all time faves, even If I can’t at least I can say I tried eh

          • Tbh I feel that they aren’t tremendously fisted down out throats, but Sinia telling you about it was so useless and ham-fisted, should of left the hype for the out of game media and just introduce it subtly like Steel and Dark.

          • its a good enough reason to dislike something for me, I don’t need people thinking I’m a lemming or cant think for myself, if I don’t feel like I have my own individuality theres not much else I have going for me, plus I grew up in a town where everyone thinks the same way about like everything and if you don’t you get basically shunned for it so I took pride in standing apart from their bs. Not saying everyone has to think like this but Its still a valid reason to dislike it, because a lot of its so called “fans” arent even really fans of pokemon, just charizard

          • That sounds to me like doing something for the sake of it. Something I can’t really accept, but won’t argue with you over. I just feel you need to have proper reasoning behind the choices you make, so you can justify it if needed later, and so you don’t dwell on a decision because youve already considered the angles. Plus I don’t care much what other people think of me :p

          • well the choices I make are my own and come from my own mind, they just get solidified if I feel like they are too different or not well received by the masses, and in a sense thats me not caring about what other people think about me myself. I reject the “crowd” mentality and think its utterly boring. Im not doing it just for the sake of it though.

          • I dunno, maybe it was just the way you wrote it and I misunderstood. But never mind.
Charizard is still the best :p

        • I’d argue this. From the perspective of outside the Pokémon community, Charixard is the overrated one. But in the Pokémon community, Blastoise has become the overrated one. I hear so much about Blastoise everywhere in the community and none for Charizard because it was ‘overrated’ (but it only was overrated in the sense of casual/genwunners/people not into Pokémon.

  3. i think I found ironic when I used a OU only pokemon I was literally getting sweeped everytime, but now I use a OU team that literally only has hippowdown as his OU member, i have been winning more often

  4. DANGIT. I just voted Venusaur because it’s my favorite of the bunch, only to see Charizard completely tied with Blastosie! I’m gonna vote Blastoise on my laptop just to keep that overrated fire lizard from winning!

  5. Okay, Gym Leaders out of the way and E4s pretty much just being better Gym Leaders without teams, what would you guys have as your Champion Team? Mine would be:

    Tsareena
    Ninetales
    Milotic
    Froslass
    Mega Altaria

  6. Let’s say you became a very powerful trainer and you decided to go after a legendary pokemon: which one would it be? (no arceus pls x) ). Mine would of course be Darkrai! I’d probably have to find Cresselia in order to get a lunar wing before even trying to find Darkrai though.

  7. Even though both Charizard and Blastoise are my two favorite pokemon of all time ( Charizard for being the first pokemon to love and pick during my first playthrough while Blastoise because he was the first pokemon that I got to Level 100 during my second playthrough and eventually transferred into my Silver Version ) I’m going for Charizard, because Red version was the first pokemon game I have received.Red version is what got me into pokemon and I still love every new pokemon game that comes out to this day.

Yes Charizard may be overrated…..but I still love my fire dragon lizard

  8. So another question because I’m bored and I’m dragging you all down with me

You wake up in a strange new world as a Pokémon, but only one which has its final form have a Mega Evolution (that has been made by GameFreak). Which would you be?

I’d be Audino, I’d love to be the healer guy on epic adventures and even before its Mega it was one of my favourites.

  9. Once again I can’t vote. Blastoise is bold as if I voted for it even though I just now opened my browser and haven’t yet had a chance to vote. Sorry Charizard, if you lose by one point it’ll be my fault, I guess. ;(

    • for all we know the cannons could be made of cartilage or a bone like subsistence, because realistically speaking the cannons are totally organic in nature which are hooked directly into some kind of mass liquid sack that constantly secretes and stockpiles a watery substance that is used in a variety of its Water attacks

          • they did an absolutely shitty job on that one
            What they should’ve said was
“Pikachu was not native to the Alola region but due to popular demand scientists brought them over to see if they could be bred there, after trying to breed Pikachu with Alolan native Pokemon they finally began showing up on the Alola Region, but little did they know that these Pikachu exposed to a Thunderstone experienced a tremendous amount of electrical energies in their brains thus evolving into Electric/Psychic Raichus

          • That would be cool
The one that annoys me is the description of Muk how it became how it was
IT’S SO OBVIOUSLY BASED OFF TEAM SKULL PAINT!!!

          • you moe ron
it was the constant consumption of Waste that caused the chemical shift in Muk’s body
and that shift caused a new chemical toxin to be born which requires constant energy to stabilize its metabolism so they constantly eat everything in sight almost savagely which explains its dark type (to a degree)

  12. TEAM VENASAUR
Not because I played Green, but because I am a loyal member of Team Bulbasaur for life.
Also we all know who’s going to win this lol.
