Pokémon Sun & Moon Details Revealed on NicoNico Stream

A stream of Pokémon Sun & Moon (coming next month to the Nintendo 3DS) on Japanese video site NicoNico recently revealed a few small details about the pair of games, which can be found below:

  • Shaking grass returns to the games, but its function may differ and there’s a new animation of the wild Pokémon jumping out
  • The number of Trials has been confirmed as seven
  • Ilima’s trial was previewed and featured the player finding Rattata in a cave, after which they were awarded with a Z Crystal
  • Rotom Dex will show you your Pokédex completion percentage after catching a Pokémon

These small tidbits just make me want to play the games more! Not too much longer to wait…

  1. Only seven trials???? what??? :/ colour me unimpressed, that means there is only one left that we don’t know about. (Please be fairy)

    • it’s just one less than gyms, and they’re probably spread out better than some of the gyms in past games (you basically do gyms 2, 3, and 4 in succession in XY, and it’s not the only game)

plus, this game will probably have more plot bosses than usual. there’s lots of festival plazas and possibly two villainous teams.

      • considering there is only 7 trail captains I don’t think we will really get to battle them as the trial, the Kahunas yes, but the trails no, considering Hala’s crabrawler is lv 15 and if you battled all the trail captains on his island before you got to him you would probably be a higher level than that

        Reply
    • It’s about quality and not quantity my friend. We could have no trials/gyms and the games could still be amazing. The story shouldn’t be totally dependent on the trials anyway. That’s what happened to gyms and look how boring the formula ended up. I say 7 is fine seeing as the story will likely be about much more than that.

      Reply
      • I agree with you after your first sentence, but quality is kind of subjective. And really this wasn’t supposed to be me complaining why arent there more, but more of why did they show us almost all of them before the game came out

        Reply
        • Yeah……ok fair enough about them showing the majority of them……I do wish that since there are fewer than people thought there would be they’d have left a bunch of them for us to find in game rather than showing them in pre release…….lol

  2. Ok so 7 trials, if the theory that you have to learn the z move poses from someone is true then i think it makes sense
    -7 trials
    -4 kahunas
So this makes 11 moves but where are the rest?
-Well Guzma and Plumeria were speculated to use the dark and poison z moves so they might teach it to you at some point if correct, adding two more moves bringing the total to 13, we are missing 5
-Well there is this the speculation that a certain somebody mentioned in the demo is the champion, wont mention the name to avoid spoiling those who dont know, and if there is a champion there has to be an elite 4 wich combined make the 5 that we are missing!
Haha it might be a bit of a stretch but still possible xD

    • Just cause there are 18 crystals, doesn’t meant they will all come from Trial captains/Kahunas etc. I mean I’m sure that we’ll get some from other important NPCs out and about – like Lusamine and her team etc

      Reply
      • The possibility of this makes me super excited because I’m hoping Plumeria plays a huge part in these games, she’s too awesome

        Reply
        • I feel like both Team Skull and the Aether Foundation will, these games look to be heavily story driven as well as all the interviews with the developers involved saying how they want it to be more immersive & look at the connection between humans and Pokemon & nature – sounds like some good character development will happen

          Reply
      • Maybe it’s like mega stones. If I recall correctly some random person gives you a Gengarite, so they don’t have to be important to the story.

        Reply
        • Valid point however I feel like they’ll try and make Z crystals more important as the whole dance/movement routine comes into play, gotta learn em from somebody, I doubt that protagonist is great at improv

          Reply
          • But you’re implying you have to be important to know how to dance. :p
Some NPC could give you a crystal and say, “I was a trainer back in the day… Here’s something that helped me through my battles, and here’s how you activate it!”

          • Well we’ll find out soon enough I guess! That could be a possibility, but I hope they don’t just hand them out. It should be somin you have to earn as opposed to just finding Mega Stones scattered around the region

    • You think there’s another plot string? Already we have:

1 – Completing the trials with Hau and Lillie
      2 – Team Skull
      3 – Aether Foundation
4 – Legendaries and Ultra Beasts, the latter which might tie into one or both above

We don’t need more plots imo. We just need the ones we have to be good enough. This is already more than most Pokemon games.

  3. I’m still a little sceptical of trials replacing gyms, The one we played in the demo wasn’t particularly fun imo and 7 seems like a rather small number.
It’s a shame because every other aspect of this gen looks amazing, here’s hoping we get a real gym challenge post game(doubt it)

    • The demo trial most likely won’t even be a trial again and it’s probably suffering from ‘shoved in’ and ‘make it easy becuase it’s a demo’ syndrome.

      Reply
    • What about about it wasn’t like a gym? It was basically a more interactive version of Gardenia’s gym challenge with the exclusion of trainers.

      Reply
    • I feel like the two – it trials (3 if you count the old man’s weird one) were just tasters, and they won’t hold our hand like the one with Jangmo-o/Hakamo-o

      Reply
  4. Seven Trials – please be long and interesting enough. Seems like each trial will end with a Totem Battle, which have the potential to be challenging.
Four Kahuna Battles – they will just be like Gym battles so I’m not expecting much.

Guess we have to hope for the Team Skull, Aether Foundation and Ultra Beast plot lines to be really good.

Also I’m hoping they don’t give us another non existent post game

  5. One thing that did irk me a lil about the demo and when the games come out, is that battles seem to still take a bit too long to start end. I mean I feel myself definitely turning battle animations off as I progress further in the game just to speed things up a little bit

    Reply
    • I think I read somewhere that they made battle animations longer
And looking at the length if a single Z move, I really don’t see myself using them all that much in-game

      Reply
      • They’re nice to look at once in a while but they’re not essential for me haha
I mean I didn’t even use Megas in my runs of Gen VI but at least after you Mega’d the first time, it wouldn’t show it again. Z-moves however, I’m sure I read somewhere that it shows the damn animation every single time. Can’t be dealing with a battle that takes ages to complete haha

        Reply
        • Yeh, I rarely used Megas as well in-game. They’re just not needed most of the time and are a waste of time with the animation.

I actually hate long winded time consuming and repetitive animations. I get annoyed with them and just wanna get on with the game.

          Reply
          • Even on emulators on my laptop, animations are off and I speed things 2x faster, helps with grinding for a start, but the thought of doing it at the speed of the demo is gonna kill me haha
My system or arranging moves helps as I can usually tap the move to use without looking

          • I’m actually the exact same. I have a set location for moves on each Pokemom.
            Top Left – Primary Stab
            Top Right – Secondary Stab
            Bottom Left – Status Move
            Bottom Right – Filler.

So I can insticintly click without wasting time.

          • I rarely bother with status moves in game. I just arrange in terms of power, with Stab taking precedent, and always try to have 4 moves that aren’t the same type, easy peasy

  6. *Future Pokemon game in the player’s room*

    Ilima

    Kiawe
That Ghost Girl from the Demo Trailer

I wonder where we will get the rest of the Z-Crystals.

  10. Anyone know where I can get a full video of the trailer from the demo?
(Preferably just the demo on its own, without talking or anything)

    Reply
          • I don’t like any youtube channels that are trying to analyse the stuff or make their own theories, I just want the original, unadorned footage so I can make my own conclusions.

          • Dunno how anyone can miss any of the trailers that are on the official channels though. This one is the only exception because it hasn’t been posted on the original channels yet.

          • sometimes some wads don’t even go to official sites for new info, they wait for others to post about it

          • Society is slowly crumbling.

When Gen8 arrives, if they post videos like they have this year, I’m going to start reposting them until I have a following and then post a couple of fake ones as a joke and see who notices

          • So you don’t like speculation? Alright, to each their own. Again I would mention that they generally make it clear what is analysis, a simple discussion and what is purely the trailer posted on their channel for those who are unable to easily find it, much like other news sources do. But again each their own.

          • I didn’t say I don’t like speculation, I just don’t like watching videos of youtube people trying to speculate.

I like the speculation here on Pokejungle, but not the youtube stuff. I don’t have the time to sit through an 8 minute video full of pauses when they could just post it as a nice block of text readable in 3 minutes.

I also don’t like them sticking their branding all over the trailers, I’d rather it were unadorned. If the demo trailer were on the official Pokemon channel I’d watch it there instead.

          • that’s a dumb thing to think and they rarely make theories their own but honestly its a theory its not a promise its a hypothesis

          • It’s still a waste of time sitting there listening to them ramble on. If they just left a transcript somewhere then I might read it, but I cba to sit though some 8 minute video of people saying something I could easily read in 2-3 minutes.

          • I know, but by watching it I’m effectively supporting the channel because they get paid by the number of viewers/upvotes/whatever.

And it’s not plain, they adorned their logo on it which means their logo will be on all my screencaps.

  11. Okay, so if you guys were in the Pokémon world, where do you think you’d live and what starter Pokémon would you get? Keep in mind it can be any reasonable Pokémon as long as it has a backstory (the traditional ‘oh professor gave it to me’ to ‘my family caught it for me’, etc).

    Reply
    • Unova Region
      maybe Nuvema Town
but as for a Starter i actually went to Kanto for my birthday to my Aunt who gave me a newborn Rhyhorn calf

    • I would start out in a house in Johto, Ekruteak to be exact, and instead of looking to become the pokemon champion I would dream of being a pokemon researcher who specializes in the identification and classification of fairy types. I became fastinated in the type when it was first discovered by a notable pokemon researcher in Kalos a few years before my journey. The researcher held a competition in Pokemon Today Magazine that would bring someone to study under him provided they could share their own findings on what makes the fairy type truly unique. When I won I traveled to Laverre City where he presented me with my first pokemon to help me in the field as we did our research. My trusty Swirlix named Puff. We would eventually branch out and continue the researchers line of work traveling to many different regions in his stead. This fall our journey would take us to a distant and tropical region where fairies seem to be thriving.

    • Might as well add mine:

I’d start in Sinnoh (Celestic Town), but would’ve moved from Alola due to the rumors about Ultra Beasts before I would’ve started the island trials. I’d of gotten Popplio at that point, and then I’d head off for adventure in the Sinnoh region to try and become a Fairy-Type Gym Leader.

    • Jhoto. Not a major city or town, but out away from people.
On my way to get a proper starter I came across a Yanma that was smaller than the others I had seen.
It was a runt and could barely hover, but the way it wobbled mid-air was adorable and I became attached to him.
I befriended him with some berries and later bought a ball for him.

  12. 7 Trials.
Normal (Illima), Electric (Sophacles), Water (Lana), Grass (Mallow), Fire (Kaiwe), Ghost (Ghost Girl from Trailer), Dragon (Unknown) as shown by the 6 Totem sprites +Wishwashi school form .
    4 Kahunas.
Fighting (Hala), Rock (Olivia), Ground (Woman with the Mudsdale in trailer), Flying (Unless they repeat Water, Guy with the Wingull)
Man it seems they’ve screwed Dark over again.
However, I feel theres a Central Person, a Champion Figure. If it’s a Royal Figure, then maybe Alolan Meowths existence points that they’re a Dark Type user, though probably not.

    Reply
    • Small issue. The man on the restaurant ship isn’t likely a Kahuna. Not only is he on the same island as the purple girl, who isn’t likely a Kahuna as well, but he isn’t wearing any of the colors of the Kahuna’s. If he were one, he’d be dressed in Purple or Red, not blue. So that Kahuna still remains a mystery.

Also remember that one golfer mentioned in the demo. Her name is literally that of Hawaiian royalty. We have dark meowth’s that came from the Alolan royalty. If their is going to be a dark specialist, she’s are safest bet, and could be our missing trial captain.

      Reply
      • Unless the guy with the Pelliper is the Dragon Trial Captain, then he’s either a Kahuna or maybe the Champion character, we do tend to meet them before fighting them. However if he’s the champion Character then that means the Royal Girl isn’t. So either he’s a Kahuna, or the Dragon, or Fighting tbh, Trial Captain. Though if he is a Trial Captain, why a Pelliper? Maybe cause he seems to be some sort of captain, but even then. That’s WHY I said Kahuna, though yes now I notice it, the colour thing points against that. So perhaps he’s none, and just a guy with a Pelliper.

        Reply
          • Kommo-o is a Dragon type and Fighting is already taken by Hala. Given we know that those blank spaces ARE Totem sprites despite people thinking otherwise, as shown by Raticate, the final Trial is Dragon.

          • Raticate has one, and the next Pokemon is Spearow, they’re right next to each other in the Pokedex, so it CAN’T be another Pokemon, and we KNOW it’s a Totem, based on that we can determine the rest, and what do you know, the ones we know are Totems already have one after them, so then we can determine the rest. Wishiwashi doesn’t have one and that’ can be explained, it’s School Form. It makes perfect sense. They also match up with the known Trial Captains.
The only Mystery is Zygardes, it’s either it’s Cell and Core, which have now been found as Items, OR it’s some sort of Boss Totem.

        • He clearly isn’t a fighting specialist given that Hala’s a fighting specialist. As well he’s clearly not a Kahuna given he’s not wearing the colors of a Kahuna. Could be be a dragon captain, yes maybe, but we don’t know. As for the Pelliper, maybe its just in their for effect. He’s standing up on a high place, so having a bird swoop by is good cinematography. It gives more life to the scene.

          Reply
          • Only the Dex Sprites missing. Yes it’s odd for that but, how else do you explain the one between Raticate and Spearow. And the others we can determine that they are based on the ones we know.
So we have Raticate/Gumshoos (Confirmed), each have that space, so going by that we also have. Normal
Vikavolt (Was shown early on too) Electric
            Lurantis Grass (Also was shown)
            Salandit Evo Fire
Mimikyu Ghost , maybe fairy but the girl screams ghost to me tbh
            Kommo-o Dragon most likely.

In addition to this Wishiwashi’s School form (Negating the need to be a Totem) was shown as one of the Trials, the Water one.
            http://imgur.com/gallery/5C8ry

          • They literally just explained the lack of a water Totem: Wishiwashi’s school form size negates the need for a separate model, as its already big to the point it won’t need a bigger model.

          • Different sizes wouldn’t need different models anyway, they can just scale the regular models as required. There has to be something else that would warrant having separate Pokedex stills for Totems.

          • Not necissarily. It might mean you need textures with more detail to prevent detail degredation if it were scaled significantly enough, but colour interpolation should be sufficient for a small upscale.

Otherwise, scaling a model is as simple as changing a few numbers.

          • That’s the big mystery, it’s almost a certainty those Models are Totems, I’ve already explained why, so the big question is, why?
And why does Zygarde have 2 missing between after it’s 50% 10% and before 100%, and why were they there, when other Pokemons forms weren’t?

          • The more I think about it the more I’m convinced the Pokedex stills were left there on purpose. There’s just too much that doesn’t add up for them to have not attempted to remove some of the data.

          • We’ll we’ll see if thursdays news gives us anything new or helps us figure out based on the rest of what we can determine.
I feel it might show a couple of the leaked pokemon, which is good because I really want to know typings. Typings seems an odd thing to not have been found tbh.

          • I’ve explained that already. It makes sense to me that Wishiwashi’s School form negates the need for that. We’ve seen it in one of the trailers. So adding 2+2, it’s the only thing that makes sense to me. At this point.

          • Regular Wishiwashi would need one though, School Form Wishiwashi turns back to normal when its health gets low.

That would mean there are three images not shown on that image: Totem Wishiwashi, Wishiwashi SF and Totem Wishiwashi SF.

          • It’s possible in order to make the fight harder Wishiwashi will remain in its school form throughout. It’s as simple as starting the fight as Wishiwashi School Form and give it a different ability (for example, illuminate to balance it out)

          • It’s possible, but that doesn’t explain why alternate forms weren’t found in the Pokedex stills for Wishiwashi or Mimikyu, yet they were for Zygarde.

          • It’s possible it wasn’t found. But Wishiwashi is certainly the “Missing” Totem. And so theres not really issue. Either, it’s not a Totem on account of it’s School form, or it’s Totem sprites are missing, you can think whichever till we find out in a months time.

  13. I know it’s just hopeful thinking, but what if the last trial is to organize a sort of league by asking the other Trial Captains if they would like to act as Gym Leaders? Organizing a league was part of a certain set if leaks if I recall correctly, and it would also add another layer of plot to the games.

    Reply
  14. Thinking more about it, The five trial captains introduced can be put all the in same age range. This can also confirms the theory of ghost girl because she could fit the same age range. Meaning that the other two are either important NPC or kahunas.

  15. I’m 70% convinced the demo leaks don’t cover everything.

    -No map of Aether Paradise
-No ‘Pokedex stills’ of alt-forms (except Zygarde)
-Pokedex stills but no models or textures (unless the hackers have been holding out on us)

  17. You know, I’m really impressed with how GF is handling Trial Captains this generation. For the first time ever, they might actually play a significant role in the plot, since they can be seen meeting the trainer before their initial battle (Mallow, Olivia, Ilima). It also seems that we finally have a villainous team that follows through the entire game, as well as another potential team, Ultra Beasts, the Zygarde quests, the Tapu legendaries and Solgaleo/Lunala… these games are gonna have one hell of a plot.

    Reply
      • The possibility of there being “wormholes” and alternate dimensions as a result of these Ultra Beasts might be interesting, kinda like the Distortion World in D/P/Pt. It’ll be interesting to see how they play out.

        • I dunno, I think that’s going a bit too far into scifi territory. Go too far with that and soon we’ll be having spaghetti timelines and genesis wave style retcons.

          Reply
        • Well thanks to OR/AS confirming alternate timelines, which were obvious if you think about it, only way to make everything canon, plus every game card is a seperate universe following the same basic structure.
I feel it’s related to Infinity Energy, remember that, in OR/AS we were told it was powerful enough to blast holes to other dimensions/Universes.
The whole UB thing screams of creatures coming to our world by some mean then been tricked into doing someones bidding while that someone plays innocent.

          Reply
          • It wouldn’t have been the only way to make everything cannon. Most things would have fit into a single timeline until ORAS did the whole ‘Meteor not volcano’ thing to Sootopolis.

Not every game is a separate universe, some explicitly state they follow each other, like B2W2 being set a few years after BW.

          • Think of it like this.
Seperate Universes, that follow the same basic timeline and story with minor to major differences. And that is every Game Card as well as every game.
That way contradictions in later games can just be explained away, and both versions can be Canon.

I’m not sure how to explain it more clearly.

          • If they’re writing things properly there shouldn’t be any contradictions, they should be able to just explain all the changes to the regions from remakes etc via the passage of time or by things happening concurrently.

          • The biggest Contradictions would be new types. That’s one thing you can’t explain away properly even with good writing.
But makes sense if you consider it a different universe.
So in some Universes Clefairy is a Normal type, and others, it’s Fairy

          • I mean you can still explain that too, they probably didn’t know how to define a fairy until then, same with the pokemon that got steel type in generation 2

          • Even then I was thinking more about type Matchups. Specially when normal types that became fairy used to be weak to fighting but are now super effective against it, that’s not as easily explained, at least a satisfying one

          • ok but you cant omit the steel types to this, thats my problem people seem to single out the fairy type forgetting it wasn’t the first type to retcon pokemon

          • That’s slightly different, but it’s the only thing that’s really required a retcon. They shouldn’t have waited until Gen6 to add Fairy though tbh

Aside from that pretty much everything else could have been side by side or linear (up until ORAS).

          • Yeah, I like to think about this alot though. Like 2 versions of the same game certainly aren’t exactly the same, not because of the story, but because of the player and their actions. I think too deeply into things that weren’t meant to be.

          • Two versions of the same game can be rationalised as the same thing. Details like exclusive Pokemon don’t change the plot, and games like Emerald and Platinum show how two versions can be rationalised into one lore.

I’d say too literally rather than too deeply.

  18. what if a while after the dataminers started decrypting the demo GF contacted them and instead of cease and desist, they bribed them to cut short the exposition?

  19. I was kinda hoping that other Gen Pokemon would get Alolan forms. I mean, it’s about celebrating 20 years not just Gen 1. I know the reasons before people tell me, but I feel it’s one big missed opportunity.
For example, Johto Starters, in a Similair way to Kalos had the Kanto Starters. Like, nothing radical just, their types being switched with each other or being given another trio of types that effect each other.
But what’s very sad is Gen 5 didn’t get much Mega Love either, just Audino and even then I feel that’s cause they forgot to give it Fairy normally. So Alolan forms were certainly their chance, though Gen 5 Pokemon seem more thought out tbh, I can’t think of any that would suit a Alolan form tbh.

          • Yeah. People are really starting to reach with some of the new one’s. Like the wire one is Guzma because the spark it has as a head is white, and the one with a mouth belly is clearly Hala because its fat. Genius!

Really at this point it seems people are just trying to see pattern’s where none exist. If anything I fully expect that the UB’s are pokemon of another universe, hence why we can catch them and in reality their designed to resemble specific pokemon of the past. Like UB 02 likely are just alternate versions of Solgaleo and Lunala, since it would be the easiest reason to explain why their version exclusive.

As for the attractiveness, he looks odd in this video tbh. I like him more in Modern Family, this doesn’t look like his fashion style at all.

    • Not necessarily. We don’t know what they give us for completing their trials. It is more or less some sort of badge, but it doesn’t seem connected to that d-pad thing. If anything, those things are simply the badge that all trial captains have to wear.

          • Your mistake is thinking you can move as soon as you start working. Take advantage of living with parents as long as possible. Of course this depends on the individual in question. But I think renting is a massive waste of money.

          • It has its downsides like my dad continually staying up until 1/2/3am on Fridays, Saturdays and sometimes Sundays or during the week which completely throws off my sleeping, but otherwise it’s better than the alternatives.

          • I have literally no downsides at the moment. Help them out with the bills and groceries every now and then (probably averaging <£100 per month), and in turn I get a roof over my head, and three hot meals a day. Sure as hell better than paying a complete stranger £750-£1000 per month.

          • I’m afriad I have to agree, if you’ve got parents who can afford to keep you at home it’s much cheaper to just pay them a bit here and there than it is to rent a flat.

Renting a flat is flat rental + food + power usage etc, living with parents is usually just a fraction of the household use which generally works out cheaper because there’s more people making the use of the resources (e.g. heating a whole house for 5 people vs heating a whole flat for the sake of 1).

The less you spend on rent and stuff, the more you have to save up for a house/flat.

          • The thing is though it’s not like flats are only disadvantageous

I’d have my own space, and wouldn’t be kept up by whatever antics my sisters and mother are getting up to.

I wouldn’t have to compromise living with other people, for example having access to the toilet whenever I want to or being able to use the kitchen to cook when I want to.

It’s an opportunity to move closer to where my work could be, or at least relocate to a more advantageous area for travel and work.

And finally, but this is just becuase I’m a social person and it’s thus a subjective advantage, the freedom to invite over who I want, when I want, for how long I want. Me and my friends frequently host movie and game nights but it’s always had to be at one location due to parents and siblings and they’ve always been cut short in their prime due to being teens

          • It would be a lot more costly though – freedom comes at a price. It would mean less video games, less nice food, less luxuries etc.

Also staying up for as long as you like gets mentally destabilising after a while and the more you do it the harder it becomes to get into normal human hours.

There are positives but there are plenty of negatives.

          • I agree there are a number of advantages, but I would rather sacrifice these advantages for a short period, so i can work towards greater advantages. I honestly never understood the prospect of paying such high amounts per month to live in a place that at the end of the day doesn’t even belong to you. Plus having to then save for a property is extremely difficult with such high living costs.

      • Not sure if it is tbh, the Pyukumuku thing seems like a random minigame that has no bearing on the plot or anything.

I might add it later though, I’d need to get ahold of the video of the minigame though 😛

Also I’ve just realised, that bit above might be a golfing green. I’ve had that thought before but thought it was too odd, but now we know about Kahili from the demo it’s quite possible it is actually a golfing green 😛

      • That may have been true in the original greek myths but nowadays them being conflated with mermaids is pretty widespread, so it’s nothing surprising to call it a siren. “Sirène” is french for mermaids, the Sirenia or sea cows were the real-life inspiration for mermaids…

        Reply
        • Greek predates the naming of both of those, and you may be getting mixed up with selkies with the sea cow thing.

Sirens were always avian in one way or another, be it talon-feet or wings like angels.

It’s only modern times that get the origins mixed up. The Latin siren also refered to the avian kind.

The sea cow genus is inappropriately named. Whoever classified them either didn’t know mythology very well, or was potentially French.

          Reply
          • My point still completely stands though, nowadays the two are widely mixed up, for better or for worse, so this make sense.

And no I don’t believe I’m mixing anything up with selkies, as far I’m aware it’s a widely held theory that sighting of sea cow tails are one of the main causes for mermaid myths.

The person who named the Sirenia may have been french, but by that time the naming the modern understanding of “siren” may already have been relevant…(It certainly seems to have been throughout the 19th century.) And they’re only “inappropriately named” if you’re being unnecessarily puristic and antiquated with the semantics of the word “siren”. Sirenians aren’t even the only aquatic taxonomic group named after sirens, a siren is also an North American legless salamander.

      • See, it has a whole Fantasy element to it, as in the Pokemon themselves, mixed with the Sci Fi, so Science Fantasy fits perfectly.

It can be argued Zelda is Science Fantasy too but that’s a whole different ballpark.

        Reply
        • Not really. The pokemon are really magical in any sense. The games go into great detail in explaining how they function in the world. Even legendary pokemon do have some scientific basis to them, and when things are left vague, its usually due to the fact that their really hasn’t been enough research on them.

          Reply
          • And I think that your overreaching what qualifies as Science Fantasy. Yes, in the absolute loosest definition of Science Fantasy; Star Trek can be seen as it, but it clearly isn’t. Its a show that almost never deals with anything of a magical or explainable nature, and even when it does, it does try to apply science and logic to it, where fantasy doesn’t. Same with Pokemon. You CAN say that it has some shared ideas of fantasy tropes, but its clearly doesn’t use those tropes in any traditional way of writing fantasy.

        • Zelda is magic-grade scifi, all the technology is magic powered and usually confined to specific places.

It’s kind of its own genre.

          Reply
    • Yes and no.

Some of the technology appears to be quite advanced, but only Pokemon-specific techology like the Pokedex, the PC and the Pokemon centre’s heal machine.

On the other hand, most people don’t own cars, there’s no internet, homes tend to have fewer appliances and a lot of people lead simpler lives.

Plus the only implausible scientific advancements are the Pokeballs and teleporters, pretty much everything else is plausible.

          • The one truck, no other cars.
The truck that moves you in (and magically vanishes into the forest), pretty much nothing else.

Sun and Moon is the first one to feature them fully regularly (assuming other places are like Hau’oli) and it’s only enough to be comparable to the early 20th century or something.

All the regions have had more boat travel involved than car travel.

G5 was the first time we saw a plane, but G7 is the first time we’re going to see a flying plane.

There’s definately something weird about the tech level.

          • The anime is practically a different universe though. A universe in which the lead cannot win a league.

The game itself is oddly low on vehicles.
And why would they have cars anyway? If they’ve had Pokemon since prehistory they would never have needed cars, a lot of Pokemon can outrun cars.

It’s just weird. The Pokemon world’s tech level makes no sense.

        • Honestly I only ever take the games as an abstraction of what the pokémon world is supposed to be, ie, something closer to the manga or certain aspects of the anime (most of the worldbuilding that isn’t nonsensical or childish). I know this is somewhat artificial, but the fact is gameplay necessities and development constraints mean that we necessarily get implausibly tiny towns, no cars, etc… And that quite obviously can’t be taken as what we’re supposed to imagine the pokémon world is.

Thus I think the lack of certain technologies seems to me more attributable to the lack of point in them being shown (as you say, they’re no the focus!) rather than an assumed absence, though honestly with no proof of their existence, both points of view are entirely tenable.
On the other hand, Pharap still has a point: though the anime and manga do have cars, they’re definitely not as prevalent as they are in our world, which is only fitting since as said, they have pokémon which are better than cars in countless respects.

It’s also as Pharap said a fantasy world full of mostly nice people, as opposed to harsh reality, (though there are limits, we do get villains who occasionally go full homicidal even if they’re barely ever succesful as it wouldn’t fit the franchise, and also a decent amount of past wars hinted to have caused massive amounts of destruction) so that certainly has an effect on the way that world works. On a sidenote it’s interesting to remark that though the anime usually is tamer than the games in terms of evil and violence for obvious reasons, the manga (which is often seen as the most faithful representation of the pokémon universe as intended by the franchise creators, and yes I know those comments mostly applied to the RBY arc but honestly they feel like a mandate that Adventures has thus far respected) often goes a little further with violence, depth and slightly more adult aspects in it’s bid to stay coherent and somewhat realistic. This leads me to wager that if we got a more complete picture of the pokémon world that wasn’t so constrained both by the video game nature of the series, and by it’s intended E for Everyone audience, it would be darker and closer to reality (I think pokedex descriptions are quite probing hints :p ). And as it happens, we have something that gives some amount of traction to that theory, in the form of pokémon Generations!

          Reply
          • Yeah E for everyone was honestly hyperbole haha. They wouldn’t want to go fully harmless because that’s monstrously constraining, but they still need to stay at that “fun for all the family” level. Honestly I think more mature spinoffs (something on the manga’s level or maybe even little more mature, but I absolutely don’t mean some edgy violent reimagining, that would just be wrong IMO) would be a very refreshing thing for the series to try.

          • It would, but they won’t because Nintendo likes to maintain its friendly facade and hit as much of the audience as possible.

        • Yes, I probably still wouldn’t leave the house 😛

Plus I enjoy programming and video games too much.

Besides being in the Pokemon world and Pokemon being in this world are two different things. Most people in the Pokemon world are nice, this world is full of miserable hateful people.

Is there a picture with trial medals in a case and only seven slots? Because if not then 7 trials could really mean a myriad of things. For example it could mean 7 trials for melemele island. It could also mean seven trials for Ilima alone. We simply couldn’t know. If anyone has clarification it would be appreciated.

    So
    Gen 1: 87
    Gen 2: 30
    Gen 3: 33
    Gen 4: 29
    Gen 5: 28
    Gen 6: 14
    Gen 7: 81
They could have spread it out a bit more evenly. Though a Pokedex of 302 is fine cause X/Y felt over Crowded. I hope however there are a couple of more new Pokemon, even if they’re outside the regional dex, I doubt theres only 2 Mythicals, but still, Gen 5 had so many more pokemon they could have added, I mean, every Gen get’s it’s Psuedo apart from Gen 5, and 2.

We then have the girl in the demo trailer who has the captain badge thing in her hair, the ghostly looking girl. Then we possibly have Kahili, the character the NPC mentions in the demo, who is said to be great at golf and off concurring the world. In fact any other excuse for no fossils I’ve seen doesn’t hold up. This is just GF making random sh*tty decisions as usual and cutting themselves off from a whole pool of design inspirations, and they don’t deserve anyone making excuses for them over it. Shame on them.

      • Yes so?
The Fossils in past gens didn’t fit the real world country either, so it’s no excuse anyway.
The only reason I see is cause theres old fossils so there no need for new ones.

      • Wrong. Hawaii has a bunch of subfossil species. It also has some marine fossils, even if they’re pretty unexciting. But even that doesn’t matter because GF has never given a toss when it come to biogeography, and that includes fossils. We could have had pretty much any sort of fosssil mon here and they could have found a logical explanation. I’m sorry, but they have no excuse.

          • yeah no, this was my last chance for a genuine Ground/Fighting type and i didn’t get it
now I gotta wait until Gen 8

          • that’s just one of the many disappointments about gen 7
but i’m not gonna get into my track record of my life

          • Well you gotta take the good with the bad sometimes. It’s not the end of the world that something didn’t happen in a game that you wanted to, and you don’t need to bring the negativity to other people, even if you’re depressed thats not really an excuse to be an arse

          • I suggest looking for the bright side of things, it helps. albiet difficult sometimes, instead of just looking at things and been dissapointed and negative all the time. If you’re dissapointed and negative all the time you’re not really gonna stop feeling depressed.
Just be a bit more positive, start at the little things, like the fact that they even make these games at all.

          • yeah i haven’t seen the bright side of things in a LONG time and they ain’t just gonna start flooding in

          • No but if you don’t try it’ll never happen will it? That’s what I tell myself every single day, after every failure, after every dissapointment, after every little thing I mess up. It helps, even if I do keep failing and messing up. It’s the little things that help.

          • Atleast you got another ground/ghost and a pure ground type, and I am guess alolan Dugtrio is going to be ground/fire. Atleast there are a few ground types. I wish there were a few more steel types. I guess I am going to force myself to use Togedemaru.

          • I disagree, recent gens have been full quality, but I’d certainly say Game Freak seem to be lowering their standards when it comes to game development ethos

  48. here’s another name for the final evolution of Rowlet, apart from Sherhood and Archood.

    Bowpoke, Bopoke (bow + Mopoke)
