  1. I want to play the game for one sole reason, to find the route that plays that theme when they were showing the starters and stay there for like 5 hours

  2. So I’ve been thinking about what the demo could be like. In the ORAS demo we got to go to a handful of different islands to explore and do little missions. In hindsight however it made sense that they could make the demo be on those islands as they were actually the mirage islands that we would later have in the real games. Makes me wonder where the SuMo demo will take place. Think they’ll go the XY route by having it on a single route and just have us cut off from the rest of the world or do we get little missions like in the ORAS demo? I hope it’s like the ORAS demo as that was more fun than the XY demo seemed to be. Also would make it more worth while to play lol. I imagine we’ll get the starters on our team along with Greninja. Like the ORAS demo I doubt we’ll get to catch any Pokemon, but maybe they’ll reveal a new one in the game! That’d be pretty awesome right? hahaha

  6. Can we petition Gamefreak for more hair options for males?

It looks like they’re only giving us the officially sanctioned North Korean haircuts at options.

    Reply
      • I know right! It feels like…. Like…. The kind of options you would have in a normal game… Joking aside all these possibilities for customization are very exciting and will certainly make each persons experience unique and personalized.

        Reply
          • I mean, of course, other games with customization, which I guess I could have specified, I do realize that most all RPGs don’t have customization.

          • In some ways I prefer it to Pokemon, it depends.

I certainly think Pokemon could learn a thing or two from it. Especially with character customisation and maybe story.

DQ IX is better than the others I’ve played though (DQ V and DQ VI).

          • My main draw to Pokemon comes from the battle system and monsters, which I do prefer from Pokemon to DQ, although I do agree that Pokemon could stand to learn from it.

          • Did you know DQ did its own pokemon style game called Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker (and a sequel)?
Good games, hard to decide if I prefered the original or the sequel.

I don’t know which battle system I prefer. I like the structure of DQ’s system and their equivalent of a horde mechanic, but their element system isn’t promenant enough.

          • I did know actually, they are actually some of my favorite DQ games, because they were what introduced me to the franchise.

      • When I saw that I immediately thought of the clothes starting to smell or get moldy, does that happen, do people even dye clothes with berries anymore?

          • you did not know that trick? lol how do you think girls dressed as harley quinn achieve the red blue ponytails

          • Dunno, I’ve never seen girls dressed as Harley Quinn.

And I’ve never even seen a bottle of Kool Aid, I think they only sell it in America.

          • I’m one of the few who prefers her original look.

Tara Strong is a good choice though.
Even if it results in Fairly Odd Parents and Ben 10 flashbacks.

          • Tara Strong is my all time favorite Voice Actress
i’ve almost seen everything she’s every voice acted in

          • Sum-Bionic Titan, Samurai Jack, Mlp, skylanders, spyro, 101 Dalmatians, Spirited Away eng dub, Drawn Together, Chowder, even in Brickleberry and King of the hill

            I love that Women

          • Good enough, out of those I’ve only seen Samurai Jack, Chowder and potentially the 101 Dalmations thing.

          • Wander over Yonder, Fosters, Teen Titans, Xaolin Showdown, Ben 10, Transformers the animated series, even those old Mario cartoons she voiced Hip and Hop Koopa (aka Iggy and Lemmy)

I just really love that women’s voice

          • Seen Teen Titans, Xaolin Showdown, Ben 10 and the Mario ones.

Oh dear god the Mario ones.
*hears the words ‘mama luigi’ on loop in head*

      • I don’t see why they wouldn’t have, Runescape does it, ARK: Survival Evolved does it, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen other RPGs do it.
Not doing it would be a sin.

        Reply
          • I’m not sure what ARK counts as, Runescape is an MMORPG, so it probably counts.

RPG is my favourite genre other than creative/sandbox (dislike the term sandbox).

ARK is probably the most well known one to do it, Minecraft does it but with flowers instead of berries. I think it’s one of those things where it exists a lot but usually people don’t think about it much.

  7. Decent starter evos. Dartrix is amusing, I love the naming choice to reference the strix genus, but it’s no way near as cool as it’s evolution :p (but hey, that’s always better than the Grovyle/Sceptile situation where the mid stage is the best). Torracat is fine, not a massive fan of it’s name, and I’ve seen fakemon evos I preferred, but it works perfectly well. So sad it turns into horrendous Tonymask upon evolution though.
Brionne is, like it’s evolution, pretty damn dissapointing to me, and just a waste of both the pinniped line and the circus theme that made popplio hold such promise. ech, at least they don’t look too bad and there’s some concept behind them.

Festival plaza looks pretty fun and for once I’m legitimately curious to try it. I think I’ll invest time in it compared to join avenue and things of similar ilk. I’m curious about those foreign region souvenir sets, about the presence of what seems to be a female team skull grunt, and about the fact you can change the plaza theme according to the official site.

I love that pokémon in the pc are finally getting some love, and these minigames look like decent fun. I love the name poképelago too. It’s nice to know what these islands on top of the map are as well, even if the outcome is honestly quite anticlimatic.

The fact they revealed megas before the game release, and the fact that they seem they might possibly not be confined to the postgame made me hope for the unexpected possibility we might get new megas, but the WCS ban kind of killed that hope. I guess we’ll see, one can always dream! The presence of these mega stones does suggest to me that the idea of visiting Kalos postgame is pretty dead, not that I believed in it any way, but I guess this is the nail in the coffin.

It’s really cool the demo seems to have it’s separate story, and it’s a cool way to make Ash-Greninja obtainable, but I’m concerned about the demo size. REALLLYYYY hope we don’t get a dataminable full game this time, that would be total sh*t.

These reveals kill a bunch of rumours that said whack about the starter evos and ash-greninja/Z-forms, but as the riddler hinted we got more out of the Z-ring features, so the riddler’s credibility stands as expected.

Random rant: the new draco meteor totally sucks compared to the old one.

    Reply
    • I’m hoping Strix is also a reference to the mythological Strix, but it probably won’t be.
I think when I first got Sceptile I didn’t like it much, but grew to like it in the end. I don’t like its mega though.

      Totally agree about Tony.
      http://i.imgur.com/epqnU2q.png

      I wouldn’t say it’s a massive dissapointment but it’s definately a shame it didn’t have a circus theme.
Maybe they thought a clown pokemon would scare people.
Could have done a ringmaster or something though, or an acro… ok maybe not an acrobat.

Yeah, Festival Plaza is one of the things I’m genuinely excited about because I’m a horrible item hoarder.

I don’t think it’s that anticlimactic. Presumably everyone else was expecting a battle frontier or Kalos or something, but I was pretty convinced it would be something mundane like the location of the demo.

I am pretty glad that it looks like they’re going to abandon the idea of adding new megas. But that’s just me.

Consider it datamined, GF are too stupid to strip the data out. Dislike Ash Greninja, but I’ll play the demo because there will probably be items (I hope).

Eh, he’s not the only one to do that, people were saying it way before him.

  10. I’m REALLY hoping that they find a way to prevent dataming. If they didn’t it was a very stupid move to release a demo, as these games seem like they have much to spoil. I’m going to play it by ear and as soon as I hear of datamined demos, I’m out until after the game’s release, which is dissapointing considering that’d be two weeks before I was planning on leaving.

    Reply
    • Honestly I have very poor knowledge of coding or anything of the sort, but I’m assuming the only reliable way of preventing datamining would be to not have the data there in the first place, like any person with a shred of pride in their work when it comes to not throwing it out to be spoiled would do. It’s a bit sad we can’t trust GF with that.

If the dam does burst I’m gonna have a few questions about the number of pokémon/alolan forms/by some miracle megas or by some even bigger miracle evos of old pokémon, about the gleanable presence of a decent postgame, possibly about the nature of ultra beasts as I’m not a fan of them, and maybe about the veracity of certain leaks, but other than that I’m honestly going to try and stay away from spoiling the pokédex for myself. I legitimately want to enjoy discovering them when the game comes out.

      Reply
      • That is true. If it gets leaked, I’m going to ask someone I trust one question: Do we have a battle frontier or something similar? I want to know this going in so I don’t have to be dissapointed if there’s none at the end of the game.

        Reply
        • Yeah it’s the same for me, it’s about not being dissapointed when there’s only 80 new pokémon, no postgame, no new megas, and UBs are catchable… But at least relieved we get a snowman and a toucan.
          Or some similar situation.

          Reply
          • Or maybe they’ll be 110 new Pokemon, a large post game, new Megas, uncatchable UBs, and a snowman and toucan! Gotta think positive.

      • As a programmer, yes, that would be a very reliable way to stop the data mining.

Sadly there are costs to these things. Removing the wrong bit of data could crash the game because the game attempts to load something it thinks is a pokemon and instead gets a heap of nonsense, causing it to build the equivalent of a misingno or crash altogether.

I agree about disliking the UBs. I liked them until UB02A.

        Reply
        • It may cost stuff, but they might have the time and resources for it. After all, the ORAS leaks could’ve been prevented if they removed the extra Pokedex entries and unneeded trainer battle data, then play the demo to completion to see if it worked properly.

Though not being familiar with the 3DS devkit, I won’t know how long it takes to compile the thing after editing what amounts to be a text file.

The ORAS demo should not take 2 hours long to run through all the available scenario that it had.

          Reply
          • It depends how many tests they have to run. There’s a saying in the world of professional programming that you should spend more time testing and reading code than you do writing it. So really it depends on how strictly their test policy is. If I were in charge I’d be saying ‘screw tests, just wipe the pokedex’.

It probably takes longer to upload to the cartridge than compile, but it depends on what their hardware is like. They might have a cartridge interface that reads straight from the computer’s HDD or RAM or something, in which case it would be as quick as the computer can compile the code and the game can boot. They may even have a way to force data into the 3DS’ RAM and set the registers with the right data.

Otherwise (if the embedded system I’ve been using is anything to go by) compilation is less than a second, uploading is 5-10 seconds. But I’m working with a low-memory device and small amounts of code, the 3DS is many times larger.

Plus they have to test pretty much every possible scenario, i.e. they literally try to break it by attempting things only idiots would do. And then there’s heisenbugs – bugs that mysteriously seem to disappear when you try to observe them during testing.

I can’t remember how long it was, that was ages ago, but it was definately shorter than a few hours, so yeah, maybe 2.

          • Well the demo is not gonna be on a cartridge so that saves time in uploading to carts at least.

The main thing about the ORAS leaks is the Pokedex, Trainer and item leaks (which did spoil some unannounced megas). If I were them in designing Sun and Moon’s demo, I would wipe the Pokedex and enemy Trainer list and item list, and copy pasta any entries I would need on demand (3 starters, Glalie and Mega Glalie, Steven’s Pokemon, all the encounters in the game, potion, Glalie stone, etc.).

As for idiot-proofing, they probably already did that in the testing for the main game, so all they’d have to do is take an abridged test script from the main game and give that to the people testing the demo.

          • Yeah, but they have to get the data to the 3DS somehow, doing it wirelessly would take ages, transfering it onto an SD card or cartridge would be faster but still quite slow, but using a cartridge interface cable (i.e. a cable that pretends to be a cartridge but actually connects to a main computer) would theoretically be the fastest method, albeit harder to set up.

Yeah same, except instead of zeroing the data, I’d fill it with dummy data that can’t do any harm, like fill the pokedex with entries about missingno and use teru-san for the items, and give them effects that are less likely to cause issues.

It’s not that easy though. Remember the mew glitch in Gen1? That was caused by memory pointers pointing to data they shouldn’t do, and that’s still a possibility in modern games, even if it’s less likely to occur. Misinterpreted data is one of the bugs that’s most likely to cause issues when creating a slimmed down demo. It’s not impossible that they could just strip the data out and it would work fine, but programmers tend to be over-cautious because the public gets really stressy about bugs and performance issues, and in a world where dividing by zero can cause a program to crash, every eventuality has to be accounted for.

          • Hmm, I thought the point of a dev kit was to be able to test it on a PC or something. Unless that only applies for Xbox1 and PS4 because of their PC-like architecture…

Maybe they do have some R4-like flashcarts or something (but legit) for transferring to a “cart”? Wait, it’s a digital only demo. Well I guess they have some quick way (we normal 3DS customers don’t have) to USB transfer things to the SD card android-style…

          • Different devkits work differently, the term ‘devkit’ is loosely defined as to what it encompases. I expect the Xbox1 and PS4 are indeed easier to work with since they both use Intel based CPUs similar to those found in desktops. The 3DS uses an ARM processor, which is specially designed for embedded systems (satnavs, phones etc). Aside from the different instruction sets, Intel CPUs are CISC processors and ARM CPUs are RISC processors (Standford’s explanation is as good as any if you don’t already know the difference: https://cs.stanford.edu/people/eroberts/courses/soco/projects/risc/risccisc/ ).

Out of interest, the library used by indie developers to make Xbox360 games (called XNA before it was discontinued) could be used to make games that ran on Xbox or PC, and several games that ended up on Steam used it (I think Fez might be one of them).

Potentially something like the flashcarts, I was thinking more like something that connects via cable and uses a cartridge shaped plug, a bit like this: http://67.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l0n8i3xwFB1qzp9weo1_1280.jpg
But, instead of being hooked up to some random board, having a USB on the other end and either converting the signal or writing to the cartridge maybe. Either would work, but the speed of the process would depend on the speed of the SD card’s memory (they actually have different categories of access speeds) and the speed and practicality of a communication protocol between the cartridge interface and the USB interface (or some other computer-based interface).

    • I think they are sure sure this time after what happened with oras demo. If they are so stupid to put all data in the demo again, well they should not do that job.

  11. I really love how the new reveals have only a few new pokémon, but widely expand on new features, that’s exactly how they should be doing these trailers closer to launch, as 48 officially revealed pokémon is already kind of too much.

Definitely expecting fossils in Corocoro, and them to be revealed in the trailer on the 14th too. Probably one or two new Alola forms too, possibly Persian, and I guess a new Z-move or two.
Feature wise, we know we’re getting more info on Type:Null, and though that’s not a feature per se it’ll probably have story implications. Other than that I have no idea, hmm, maybe the trailer will have more stuff about customisation or about Pokéride?

  13. Sorry for spamming these comments but I have a lot to say. These games are looking great so far, and I’m saying that if they have an engaging story, finish off the dex strong, and give us a BATTLE FRONTIER (pls GF I’m begging you), then these may be my favorite installments yet. Still holding out for that BF though.

  14. I’ve always been a fan of gender differences in Pokemon, but I’ve got to admit, Sirene and Beltigre are too polar opposite. It almost makes no sense how a Male Sirene and Female Beltigre could exist looking like that. It’s like a comedy movie plot.

Robinhoot is the only one that makes sense

    Reply
    • You know, once my professor told me that exactly how we cannot tell the difference between a male pinguin and a female pinguin by simple looking at them, when they look at us they cannot even. So try to imagine pokemon as pokemon and stop pretending they are human. Cause in a world where a female machamp and a male Lopunny can happen, everything can.

      Reply
          • So the next game could feature all the pokemon being wiped out and just have people punching each other instead?

          • If GF wants to, it will happen. I mean can otters become sea lions in your country?
Sometimes i feel like being at cinema with everybody complaining that what they see is fake. You know when you sit down and think: Why?

          • The point is that just because something can happen, that doesn’t mean it should happen.

I for one would be happy if they stuck some lipstick or something on Machamp to make the distinction clearer.

After all, it wouldn’t be the first time.

          • You’re acting a bit childish, just because you don’t like what he/she’s saying doesn’t mean you have to be that way.

And for the record the reason wobbefet has lipstick on is a reference to Jessies in the anime when it put the lipstick on, its really more of a joke then anything else….

          • You wouldn’t be saying that if you agreed with @disqus_54hd3zisDQ:disqus and disagreed with joker.

They could have put a shirt on Machamp or given it different head growths, the point still stands.

Or is this just because I used lipstick as an example?

          • If you wanna feel real life, then go out and live it. This is a freaking game, settled in a world where 11 years old children save the world and have no fathers. Jesus, do you really feel a problem with Machamp not having lipstick? Stop playing pokemon and create your own game!

          • If that was meant as an insult, I’m not insulted.

Lipstick was just an example, as I said, they could have given it any number of differences.

Actually I am creating my own game at the moment, it’s not a full scale RPG, but it’s more about the means than the end.

          • Please consider that in real life the only gender differences are genitals and chest. Cause you know that male emo uses lipstick and females have bad tatoo too in 2016, right? So if your suggestion is to give Pokemon sexual organs, fine, write to Gf. Cause what it looks like right now is that you wann put sexism on pokemon and we don’t need it. I love that Female Machamp looks like a male Machamp, they are equal in pokemon and I’m fine with it.

          • I’m thinking about other animals not humans. (Though actually there are more differences than that. Hormones, chromosomes, hair growth, muscle mass, even general body shape.)

As for animals, Female peacocks are brown, the males are blue and green. In some species of owl the female is larger than the male.

I only used lipstick as an example, they’ve already done that with Wobbuffet – it wasn’t my idea to start putting lipstick on pokemon.

There’s a long list of sexually dimorphic pokemon, it’s not a new thing: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pok%C3%A9mon_with_gender_differences

          • And how are we supposed to distinguish a pokemon hormone or chromosome? A female bodybuilder has much more muscle mass then me, believe me. Hair growth…really? Female usually shave, but there are smooth men and hairy women.
Listen, we see things differently and there’s no way you will accept that there’s not always science behind pokemon so, let’s just leave this conversation.

          • They don’t, but those are indeed differences.
But you can tell a female bodybuilder is female.
Yes, natural hair growth. Besides, Pokemon don’t shave.

I’m not saying they haven’t made decisions that refute science, I’m saying that every fantasy world has to obey certain laws or everything falls into chaos. There are websites dedicated to this practise, it’s called worldbuilding. Without boundaries things fall apart, if Harry Potter was incapable of killing Voldemort one minute and could magically kill him the next with no explanation as to how, the world would fall apart.

But Gamefreak have already introduced sexual dimorphism and it’s a good thing and they should keep using it.

          • So, please, reveal to us poor humans what are those rules that stopped Sugimori from creating a pokemon putting some eyes on garbage. The rules beside the creation of a pokemon belongs to Ken Sugimori and GF. That’s why if I design a cute grass chair it cannot be consider a pokemon. So if you are in touch with Sugimori and he told you that he was forced to create female Machamp without lipstick but he really wanted to, that’s something. Otherwise, you just want something and you pretend that things have to be like you want them to be. You know why GF does not do what you want? Cause there are other milions like you that like the things you don’t. Can you accept it?

          • I never said anything about rules stopping pokemon being created. I mean things like them never getting rid of existing pokemon or changing how evolutions work (except Feebas) or keeping violence out.
Ultimately they have to abide by the rules of Pegi, Ken couldn’t design a pokemon that was literally just a naked human.

I’m fine with being disagreed with, clearly you haven’t been though.

          • Machop isn’t literally a naked human, it’s a naked reptile without any external organs (apart from skin).

          • I never said I saw Machamp as a man, what I implied was that it’s impossible to tell a male and female Machamp apart just by looking. Not hard – impossible.

          • Ehm..yeah, like 680 other pokemon? So you want to be able to distinguish all 800 pokemon among males and females, that’s your point? And why does this problem come out after 20 years of pokemon?

          • Why not? It would be pretty handy.

            And it’s 505 discounting Gen 7.
            99 Sexually dimorphic pokemon +
34 pokemon of single sex +
            77 genderless pokemon =
            210 pokemon,
            720 – 210 = 510

It’s not a new problem, it’s an old problem being discussed again.

          • You know why? Cause there cannot be a world without rules. One of the rules in real life that Gf decided to follow is that you cannot always distinguish a male creature from a female creature, like you cannot distinguish a male pinguin from a female pinguin. So they decided to create pokemon with obvious gender differencese and others without, exactly like in real life. So the circle can be closed and I imagine how great you should feel realising that GF has always done what you wanted to, even if you didn’t know it. And if you have a problem with this, then you have a problem with nature and only God can help you (who knows if God is a male or a female and if you could tell it just by seeing)

          • Ah good, so you finally agree that there are rules.

In the real world you can tell almost every animal’s sex apart, if not by appearance then by behaviour. Even penguins have tells.

            I don’t believe in God.

          • I cannot and children (which are the majority of pokemon players) cannot for sure, so yeah GF created something that would fit its target. All pokemon behave the same. About rules? Wasn’t you the one who needed some? Now you have one, accept it or change game, that’s up to you, you are totally free in this choise. So please stop this, cause you know you really have no argumentations left, right?

          • A large chunk of gamefreak’s actual audience are teenagers and adults (in particular people who have actually been playing it for 20 years).

Children can’t comprehend all the meta rules, but they exist.

All pokemon do not behave the same. They have different animations, different quirks. Zigzagoon moves in a zig-zag pattern, linoone runs in straight lines, Clefairy bounces around, Salamence flies. Some pokemon behave, some disobey.

There’s no rule against sexual dimorphism, it’s already a thing built into the game. There is a rule that it exists, there’s nothing to stop them making it more prevalent. They’ve already retconned lots of pokemon that weren’t sexually dimorphic to say that they now are sexually dimorphic. Pikachu, Houndoom, Roselia etc.

          • And how can you distinguish a male clefairy from a female one based on behavior? Please tell me.
Inchorent nonsense that’s exactly what you have been talking about for two howrs 🙂

          • I’ve decided StarStorm was right, I’m going to go do something fun instead of listening to this incoherant nonsense.

            Enjoy talking to thin air.

          • The point about the rules/boundaries and the point about sexual dimorphism are different things.

I never said Pokemon should look like humans and I never said they should look like animals. I’m saying they should have more sexual dimorphism because they’ve already started using it, it works well, and it should be extended to more pokemon.

          • and you wouldn’t be trying to tear the joker down a notch if you agreed with them, its a two way street, whats your point? Im sure you wouldn’t like it if you made a statement about something and then someone pulled some randomly outrageous thing out of thin air to compare to it like nazis (only you mate only you), but you do it a lot so its come to be expected by you. Honestly What purpose would having drastic gender differences serve other then to make some people feel better about pokemon not perfectly mirroring the real world. (which tbh, IRL there are plenty of inconsistencies to that, like male birds being more colourful and flamboyant then their female counterparts, which by human standards would apparently seem backwards)

          • Me tear him down?
You’re the only one here who has resorted to name calling.

The outrageousness is part of the point, it’s called hyperbole. In a world where supposedly “everything” can happen, there have to be rules or things start to break down and contradict each other.

There’s nothing backwards about the sexual dimorphism of birds (e.g. peacocks). It makes perfect sense in context. All animals have a way of telling their sex apart, it naturally stands that all pokemon should too.

It doesn’t have to be majorly drastic, female Cacturne have a different number of spikes for example.

Either way I can see you clearly have some sort of vendetta against me. It doesn’t bother me though, when it comes down to it, words are just words. Your insults neither anger me nor upset me, because an argument ad hominem is no argument at all.

          • All right belongs to Game Freak. In pokemon there are two rules:
            1) Game Freak does what it wants..
            2) Remember first rule.

          • Never called anyone names, I said you were acting childish, I never insulted you either, I’m just calling you on your aggressive behaviour. I have nothing against you either, I don’t know you, you’re just another person on the internet. The whole point of this entire “argument” is that in its root, the issue brought up was specifically about the original commenter having a problem with a feminine and a masculine pokemon having the possibility to have be both genders, and the joker person basically saying to move on. If they did have gender differences for popplio 3 and the mermaid ended up being the male form, even if in the pokemon world that was the way it worked just like birds in our own world, I guarantee you the OP would still have the same problem

          • I’m not being aggressive, I’m merely disagreeing. Being agressive would be ignoring the point and attacking the person.
Calling someone childish is a clear attempt at an insult.

That’s not how it works in the bird world unless you assuming being colourful to be a feminine trait, which I for one don’t. I think royal blue and bright green (or in some cases pure bright white) can be perfectly masculine.

          • and for the record I don’t just defend people who I happen to agree with, I’d like to think that if people were ganging up on you for something that you didn’t deserve it for I would defend you, but thats beside the point

          • I was merely disagreeing with him and agreeing with John.

And again I reiterate I haven’t actually attempted to insult anyone, I have merely pointed out a hole in their logic.

          • To be fair the whole Otter to Sea lion thing comes from the sheer fact that they experienced artist’s block when coming up with the final stage and ultimately settled on a sea lion based on a trip the a aquarium

          • If Sugimori wakes up one day and decide to create a smiling grass chair you cannot stop him. So, if you cannot stand this basic rule try something else. Learn that in real life nothing is exactly like you want, the cool thing is that there are both things you like and things you don’t, but if there were not these last ones then neither the first ones would exist.

          • Hyperbole to prove that there are boundaries, even the Pokemon world has rules.

What happened with Az wasn’t quite the same. It was a full scale war, but the rules and mechanics were different, it was a war that got out of hand, not an intentional erradication of a particular race. I’d say it was more like the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, which are in the same era and part of the same war, but again – different mechanics and things. Plus the games never show any detail they just kind of imply that things just stop living rather than

          • In as much as he’s an evil dictator, yes, but his methods are different. He plans to use a weapon to wipe everyone out at once and only wants team flare members to survive. Also his reasons for trying to wipe out humans was because he thought all humans were inherantly evil and greedy.

Hitler on the other hand teamed up with other leaders and took people prisoner rather than trying to wipe everyone out at once and his motivations were to do with his belief that Germans were superior to other countries/races.

Granted it marks the first time GF has made any reference to wars or significant death, but they still only alluded to the deaths and didn’t actually show any, so the point still stands, they have their boundaries. The world of Pokemon does indeed have rules and patterns.

          • Well it is necessarily the same, they both want to kill everyone not part of certain “elite groups”. Also iirc, there’s similar reasons Hitler has singled out Jews for destruction.

Ah ok, Sarcasm is lost on the internet.

          • Hitler didn’t want to kill everyone, just certain groups, they actually had a hierarchy in mind.
Lysandre wanted to wipe out all humans almost indiscriminately (i.e. all but the select few that joined team flare).
Abstractly they’re the same, but at more literal levels they aren’t.

Sometimes I use , but some people don’t know what html tags are and sometimes I think that’s maybe too explicit. ‘sarcasm’ would be a nice html tag to have.

          • Btw if you think it’s that innapropriate that it needs censoring, feel free to flag my comment, I don’t mind.

          • Well sex in a lot of species of different animals in real life is not consistent. The concept of looking at a sexual organ as a defining feature of sex is only due to convenience. Biologists will generally look towards chromosomes as defining features, however many also agree that that’s too simplistic. Even for us humans, we can have up to 10 chromosomes at once but only recognize 2 combinations in modern society.

TLDR in real life, Pokemon could look exactly like they do in game, with no visible sex organs, making a male and female Machamp indistinguishable without monitoring their behavior.

          • It’s not just organs though. Typically species have other characteristics such as beak sizes and patterns. Gamefreak has already implemented these things on other species (e.g. Roselia’s leaf length, Zubat’s fang length).

I beg to differ about only recognising 2 combinations. There are cases where an extra chromosome is present in those that determine sex, and the resulting combinations are named accordingly, for example as Klinefelter’s syndrome. The only reason these combinations typically aren’t thought about publically is that they are uncommon occurances at best.

Some, but not the majority. Aside from the few cases of hermaphrodites and temperature-dependant animals, most animals have some physical sign. Travelling into the realm of animals that change sex over time though, would be branching beyond the known scope of pokemon. As I’ve said before, sexual dimorphism in Pokemon is an established occurance, this is about extending that to more species rather than introducing new mechanics.

        • The thing is, female bodybuilders don’t quite bulk up the same way as male ones, which is why you can tell which one is female even if you hide obvious features like face, hair and chest.

      • The difference is that pokemon don’t actually exist? Humanoid pokemon are based on us so of course a female machamp or a male Lopunny look weird. Most women don’t get that strong (like litten3 or machamp), and most men don’t have those soft features like lopunny, gardevoir or popplio3. They should make Popplio 75% female unless Popplio3 is supposed to have gone through a gender transition

    • I[m still nog seeing Dartrix evolve in Rowlet3. Second form of Litten is adorable and tough.. Why isn’t it just evolving in a real tiger.. Wouldnt mind it ‘just to become bigger’ when evolving in his final form.

Brionne is exactly the right amount of change for its transition to Popp3

  15. I dunno why there’s a massive discussion about gender in Pokemon below, but it’s interesting how passionate people are about the matter.

The last time I even thought about gender in a Pokemon game was trying to figure out why Bertha’s Hipowdon was black. It’s irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, but whatever makes you happy I guess.
