  1. My thoughts on the starters:
Brionne of Tarth: Looks better in game, kind of horrifying stare (maybe this is what Espurr saw with future sight), I nothing it.
Tore a cat: I like it, kind of simple, not that that’s particularly bad. I like it’s fire bell collar. Doesn’t really feel that Tiger-like yet, thought it seems to be going from domestic cat to larger slightly meaner domestic cat.
Darth trix: Not exactly loving the hair-leaf thing. Otherwise I really like it. The faces it pulls are hilarious to me. I think it’s feather-knife throwing thing sounds really cool. (I’m reminded of ‘The Blue Raja’ from ‘Mystery men’, perhaps occasionally it throws a spoon-feather XD)
    In my Opinion Dartrix>Torracat>Brionne.

    • Am I the only who thought it was adorable when Torracat was mushing the ground after you pet it!? God, I really want one but don’t like the final evo. Hopefully there are S/M exclusives.

      Reply
        • I don’t like not evolving them though if I’m gonna use them in battle :/ The only time I’ve really done that is when I leveled a magikarp to 100 for fun and kept a zigzagoon as my level 100 picker-uper cause I think it’s cuter than Linoone.

          • Yeah I agree.
Litten’s line looks like a whole lot of wasted potential. People say “Oh it’s not Fire/Fighting so it’s ok” but I don’t understand the need to make almost every fire starter since Gen 3 be some sort of fighter.

          • I agree..I’d maybe be fine with it if it was actually cool looking, but the fact that it becomes very un-feline-like and it’s not good looking turns me off.

          • I almost think it’s better that the final evos leaked. If I had seen just these guys, I probably would’ve gone team Litten and then screamed when I saw it evolve

          • Yeah, plus now all (well, most) of the Popplio contreversy was done in June rather than a month and a half from release.

          • Trueeee. Still kinda sad that’s even an issue. It’s one of those ones where I’m indifferent, but I definitely like parts of it. It’s just not my favorite but I think it’s better designed than Greninja and Samurott.

      • I liked it. I’m not exactly on board with the Exclusives evolutions, sure Lycanroc got them, but the Starters seem unlikely to me.

        Reply
          • I never really liked Claydol until it helped me destroy Lisia. I was also indifferent to Tentacruel until it basically swept Lance. Now it’s one of my favorite water types. Even if I end up appreciating its power though, I’m not sure its design will ever really click with me, which sucks because I love cats

          • Well we can’t all like everything. Are there enough Pokémon yet you could forego your starter for? Or can you have it hold an everstone for most of your playthrough and evolve it later?

          • I mean I like Rowlet’s final evo, so I’ll go with him. Just kinda sucks cause there are a lot of awesome flying types this gen lol

        • the only reason i hope they get exclusive evolutions is because they said at the beginning that rockruff and the starters shared a secret, the only thing thats unique about rockruff atm is it’s exclusive evolutions so thats why im half expecting them to get a similar treatment. but the other half of me expects to get used to the ones we have seen from the leak. tbh i have grown to like the bipedal tiger but it still puts me off….if it was quadrupedal then maybe ide be happy 🙂

          Reply
          • Tigers are one of my favourite animals. I too would have preferred a Quadrapedal final form. But I have grown to like the leaked Bipedal one over time. I wouldn’t necessarily mind a split-evo, just seems like there’s little to no chance, even with the Rockruff stuff.

  2. Gotta say, I like Brionne’s look in game far more than it’s artwork.
That went for Popplio as well. Brionne’s artwork just makes it look like it’s on something.

  3. So Festival Plaza seems to be a combo of the Entralink/Join Avenue/Wifi Plaza and the Poképelago seems to be the spiritual successor to the Dream World. I bet that’s even where we can get HA pokemon. That’s some cool shit. The only things that could make these games better would be:
    -Battle Frontier
    -PWT
    -Pokeathlon type games

All these new features seem really fun 🙂 I’m so hyped

  4. Thank god Mega Evolution is back.
Not for the mega evolution itself but because people will stop asking if it’s coming back or not.

    Reply
    • tell me about it, i wouldn’t care if it was back or not, but people were going insane because they hadn’t said a word about it until now. so thank Arceus people can finally stop complaining! Relief 🙂

  5. If we are actually getting clothing based off of protagonists and different characters I am going to be so happy. Gimme Gold’s hat, Hilda’s shirt and jacket-thing, Leaf’s Skirt and Rosa’s leggings.

  6. To quote one of my friends, “I wasn’t sure which one I was gonna pick, but I’m picking Rowlet BECAUSE of that hair flip”

  7. Fun fact about Dartrix. Dartrix could be inspired by Robin Hood in his early years. When he was the son of an earl and of course acted snobby like a rich kid. Rowlet’s Final evo is basically Robin Hoods end result when it finally got his crap together and tried to be a hero. The Robin Hood we know now.

    Reply
    • Fun fact about Robin Hood, there’s evidence to suggest it was actually intended to be a story by the upper classes to their children to encourage them to get involved with philanthropic endeavours, not (as most people believe) a story to appease the lower classes.

  8. Talking about types:

Dartrix: Grass/Flying for final evolution, no need to discuss.
Torracat: Burning terrain, I mean it could go Fire/Dark, but its dex entry actually points to fighting, which will be reaaally disappointing. I mean Litten3 design is terrible, at least don’t make him another bipedal Fire/fighting.
Brionne: Can totally see Fairy coming at first place, if not maybe just pure water cause no other type will fit it (maybe psychic but its and popplio’s dex entries do no suggest that).

    Talking about stats:
Rowlet 3: Good/Great Hp (100) Mixed attacks (100-90), low defenses (65-75). Good Speed (100 at best cause it already dies with an ice shard, at least it has to survive to non priority moves. It can be a defensive pokemon). Brave bird, Solar Blade, Tailwind, stuff like this
Litten3: Goodl Hp (90), Great Attack (120) good defense (100), low sp.Att. (70) and Sp. Def (70), normal Speed (around 80). It doesn’t look like a sweeper, so I think it will go like emboar but with more speed and less hp. Punching, Fang and Kicking moves.
Popplio3: Normal HP (80), Low Attack (60) Great Sp. Att (110), Defense (100) and Sp.Defense (110), Normal/Low speed (around 70). Water/Fairy is truly a good defensive combo so it can easly be the wall among the starters. I can see it learning sing, charm, wish, toxic, sweet/draining kiss, calm mind, aromatherapy and so on…

    • Litten was actually shown to be the fastest of three starters. Also I’m pretty sure Litten will end up Fire/Dark. Translations in the descriptions of the concept says it likes to cheat and fight dirty. So that sounds like a Dark type.

      Reply
      • Litten maybe be fast, but Litten3 does not look that fast. 90 at best. Also just because it’s faster then Popplio and Rowlet doen’t mean much. It can be 50 while Rowlet is 45 and Popplio is 40. I totally cannot see it like Greninja, Sceptile or Serperior. It looks bulky, it will go like Blaziken.

        Reply
        • It can be fast. I mean Lycanroc Midnight doesn’t look bulky in the slightest, yet they make it sound like it can take a hit in order to use Counter. Also wasn’t Blaziken pretty fast too?

          Reply
          • Also notice how Dartrix gained 32lbs evolving, Brionne less then 22lbs while Torracat gained 45lbs. At first Popplio was the heaviest, almost the double of Litten and almost 5 times of Rowlet weight. Now Brionne and Dartrix are almost the same weight while Torracat is 20lbs fatter then them. I don’t think we will have a starter with more then 100 base speed.

          • That weight is mostly muscle from it’s upper body, not fat. Also if Torracat is actually faster than Rowlet despite the weight, that would imply none of them are that fast. And I highly doubt that.

          • I can see that happen. It happened in gen I and II. My predictions are Grass 100- Fire 90/80- Water 78/70. Never happened that the fattest starter is also the fastest. So I’m quite sure Litten is going to lose some speed while Rowlet is going to gain some or they will both settle on 90.

          • Mega Blaziken’s ability is Speed Boost and default Blaziken has a base speed of 80. So decent, but not very fast either

      • “Lurantis can learn Solar Blade, a move that releases a blade-shaped beam to mince up its foes. The blade is so sharp it is said it can slice a rock in half! Solar Blade is a move that no Pokémon has been able to learn before. With Solar Blade, Lurantis absorbs energy from the sun on the first move and then unleashes a powerful attack on the second turn.” Not sure that makes it a move unique to it or not.

        Reply
        • Pretty sure it’s supposed to be unique or they wouldn’t have bothered revealing it alongside Lurantis.

Unique moves used to be more common until they started diluting things and giving unique moves to other pokemon.

          Reply
          • Or it was just the first Pokémon revealed capable of using it, so they felt they should say something about it after it was shown using it.

          • If they did that, they should have revealed other moves alongside other pokemon.

The fact they’ve revealed so few moves (other than Z moves) is a clear hint there’s something special about that one, and being a signiture move makes more sense than any other explanation.

          • They’ll probably de-uniqueify it next generation.

Besides, I miss pokemon having unique moves.
For example if Hawlucha didn’t have exclusive access to flying press, people would forget about it. Lucario lost a chunk of appeal when other stuff started learning Aura Sphere.

    • stat wise i think it will go like this:
rowlett: Mixed high attack, mediocre HP and defenses, high speed
litten: mediocre speed and special defense average hp and defense, high attack
popplio: good hp, sp def. high special attack low attack and special defense speed

      Reply
      • Rowlet has a lot of HP looking at its stats from the first trailer. It cannot have that high speed cause Litten is faster right now. Litten speed on the other hand will go down but not that much (around 80-90) for the same reason. Popplio has great sp. att and defenses, always from a trailer at the E3. It has low attack for sure, but maybe not that poor speed cause it seems pretty agile with the dancing thing and the baloon (70-78).

        Reply
        • imo litten speed is going to drop alot. rowlett defenses are going to be very poor and popplio is going to be a mirror of milotic stats
          Rowlett:
          HP:90
          Attack:95
          Defense:65
          SpAtt: 105
          Sp Deg: 65
          Speed: 100

          Litten
          HP:80
          Attack:115
          Defense:90
          Sp Att: 70
          Sp Def:70
          Speed: 75

          Popplio:
          Hp: 95
          Attack: 60
          Defense:65
          Sp A: 100
          SP Def: 110
          Speed: 80

          Reply
          • There no way on earth Popplio’s defense is 65, really. It must be something between 80 and 100. Also your total stats are 520, 500 and 510 with no reason at all. Give then more point to rowlet hp, ten more points to litten speed and twenty to its defense, and give Popplio its twenty defense points.

      • If it was really based off tiger mask then I say it should get AT LEAST! 100 Base stat HP. In the anime Tiger mask Nisei, Tiger mask takes hits that would kill a Rhino.

  9. With Hyper Training will we be able to see the IV’s now? I can’t remember if it was shown. Also has there been anything on the Day-care? Specifically with relevance to breeding.

  10. A bit of an update. This came from the Japanese Website. Getting Mega Stones is not restricted to a special facility. Also, note a “special facility”, let’s hope that’s the Battle Frontier. Anyways, they could be naturally found around Alola and received from NPCs in the game. Also, I found the second page of the bottom screen. Can anyone translate the Japanese? Also, why is there a stamp next to the Trainer Card? https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/768c18d0b6345c2941f77c4a395c329395ae02cc204e9371d9252b78361349df.png

  11. I am very Litten’s line fan but let be more logical and less emotional here.

Dartrix: Actually I didn’t expected that Rowlet evloution will have this amazing and derpy personality I will give 1st place.

Torracat: I like it but I kind disappointed I don’t want him to be quadrupedal if it stand on 2 feet that will give him stronger personality in my opinion(I like his body curve though) so 3rd place.

Brionne: I like her (I mean to not saying it) Design and the color in the game more than the official art her animation is very felicitous though …2nd place.

  12. Reasons Datrix is my favorite Pokémon of Alola thus far:
    • That shade of green is beautiful
    • I love the “hair”
    • It’s overall design is amazing
    • It’s gonna be my starter
Great job Gamefreak 🙂 Solid 9.8/10

  13. I’ve been thinking about the name the final evolution for Rowlet might may as well be…

    Rowlet – Arrow and Owlet

Dartrix – Dart and matrix or something with trix in it, somebody clarify me

Archood, Bowhood could may as well be it’s official name for the final evolved form, deriving with Archery or Bow with Hood. A subtle reference to Robin Hood, but if it’s to do with that, I would prefer calling it Sherhood instead.

  14. “At times, this Pokémon feels so bothered by its dirty or ruffled feathers that it can’t focus on battle. When it loses its focus, it sometimes even retires from the battle on the spot! It’s up to each Trainer to help Dartrix overcome this troublesome stage. If this Pokémon is with a Trainer who helps it through, its strength will grow hugely!” Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a mechanic that changed how certain pokemon acted during battle? Like if you fail to groom your Dartrix it might disobey you during a battle or if Girafarig is put to sleep it’s tail head can still attack you or if you use rain dance on Magcargo it will cause a fog weather condition which will lower accuracy ect, And these would function as 2nd abilities determined by a Pokémons species.

    Reply
    • Only in some cases.

I’d get pretty miffed if I was about to face the legendary and stop the world from being destroyed when I suddenly realised “oh crap, I haven’t groomed Dartrix” and have to spend 5 minutes grooming my pokemon.

      It would ruin the mood.

Also that would mean making Charmander die when its tail went out.

      Reply
      • I feel like as far as dartrix goes it will be something that can be over come with raising it’s friendship. As for charmander you would have to take care not to send it into battle wet. I feel it would add more immersion because it would feel like “hey I really raised this Pokémon)

        Reply
        • It would be a pain when trying to complete the pokedex though.
I think having them alongside for the whole story is raising enough.
They’d be better off making it so trainers reset to their start state after a day or so so you can start from the first area with weak pokemon and fight your way to the end, minus the story elements.

Plus I really hated having to evolve Sylveon using the Amie. Most annoying evolution ever. Even more than having to hold the DS upside down.

      • similar to mudbray
they tell me that they need to play in the mud every so often to invigorate them and if they don’t they stress out and won’t obey

i mean yeah i could possibly tear up some ground but i’m lacking in water types so its gunna be stressing without mud

also i myself don’t want to get muddy WE’RE FREAKING LIVING ON OUR OWN so i doubt there’s any laundromats anywhere, also i got this quirk where i cannot stand to get my hands smudged where it drives me nuts

  15. Bulbapedia’s name origins! …I posted this earlier, but there’s been slight updates.

Dartrix may be a combination of darts and the genus Strix or tricks.
Fukusurō may be from 梟 fukurō (owl) and throw.

Torracat may be a combination of torrid (very hot and dry) and cat. It may also involve 虎 tora, Japanese for tiger. It may also involve torrar, which is Spanish for to roast or to toast.
Nyahīto may be a combination of ニャー nyā (meow), 火 hi (fire), and heat.

Brionne may come from brine may come from brio (vivacity of style or performance) and undine, a type of female water nymph or mermaid.
Oshamari may be a combination of オシャレ oshare (fashionable), 鞠 mari (ball), and marine.

    • I always go by the TCG standard. Base = first one, 1st stage = first evolution, 2nd stage = 2nd evolution. So it’d be the 1st stage according to that

      Reply
        • Idk it’s like how we name the floors in a building as well. I’m American, but I still say ground for the one you’re on (like entering from the street), first for the one above that, second, and so on. Apparently here it’s supposed to be first for the one you’re on, second for the one above that, and so on?

          Reply
          • Using ‘ground’ is a British thing.
That’s a bit different though since that’s to indicate that you can walk out the door and you’ll be standing on land instead of trying to walk through the air.

Maybe more people should open up to the idea of 0-indexing.

The reason I tend to think of them as 1,2 and 3 is because non-evolving pokemon are called ‘single stage’ pokemon, hence it follows that other pokemon (that do evolve) have a second and third stage.

    • imo, is honestly one of the best middle stage, top 5 for for sure along with quilava, dewott, croconaw, and prinplup heck is probably top 3

  16. “A select number of Pokémon were able to Mega Evolve in Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon X, and Pokémon Y.
As long as you’re in possession of the proper Mega Stone, any of these
Mega-Evolving Pokemon that can be caught in the Alola region will be
able to Mega Evolve in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, as
well. The Mega Stones for Pokémon that appear in the Alola region may be
received from people in the game or obtained from special shops.”

So does this mean some mega pokemon will be unobtainable?

          • I’m already angry at loads of their decisions.

If it weren’t for Komala, Oricorio and Lurantis I’d be inclined to skip this generation.

It’s about time they accepted feedback forms.

          • They ruined Litten’s final form, UB02A is an abomination, I’m probably going to miss gyms, Type: Null is an awful name, some of the region forms are worse than the originals…

Just so many bad decisions that it’s turning into one of the most divisive games ever. It was supposed to be “it all comes together” but it’s slowly turning into “it drives us all apart”.

          • True, im starting to think that they just used the “it all comes together” gimmick because they are the games for the 20th anniversary but they really are the most different main series games so far

          • Yup.

“it all comes together” -> only give region forms to Kanto pokemon

“it all comes together” -> scrap gyms, replace with trials

            etc

      • That confirms some mega stones, but not all of them.

And this description (from the official site) says “for Pokémon that appear in the Alola region” twice, as if to emphasise it.

        Reply
    • I’m assuming we’ll have access to all mega stones, but not all pokémon, so the megas would only become available when the pokémon themselves do in January, as would make sense. It would make absolutely no sense to bring some megas back but not all of them. They could make some mega stones unavailable, but that seems like a stupidly random decision, what would be the point of making some of them inaccessible and not others, especially as all of them are banned from the 2017 WCS…

      Reply
      • I’m just going by the fact they emphasises ‘in the Alola region’ twice.

“Mega-Evolving Pokemon that can be caught in the Alola region”
“The Mega Stones for Pokémon that appear in the Alola region”

    • Yep! The official site even suggests that there will be more than the four they showed off, “And develop new kinds of islands as well!” Also, in the official art, you can see an island that has a waterfall/hot springs type location. I’m excited 😀

          Reply
        • It’s a minigame thing.
You leave pokemon there (via the PC somehow) and they gather beans and evolution stones and stuff for you while you’re out adventuring.

          • I think you just visit the little hut in the centre and the guy in charge ferries them to you.

The islands don’t have an overworld model it seems. It’s more like the Dream thing from Gen5 or the pokemon Amie – sprites and a 2D background.
