  1. I just think it would’ve been cooler to actually sticking with the circus seal design instead of taking a whole different route to where its a mermaid. I like the thought of it keeping the circus idea, and maybe having a ball to attack with or something like that. Shiiii it could’ve even took some features of a clown ???. They could’ve still made it cute, instead of just flat out making it a pokemon to appeal to girls and boys who are more feminine. To me it looks like they jus turned a good pokemon into Samurott’s sister. I like the idea of a Siren for sure, but I just feel like they could’ve made a completely different pokemon out of it, instead of abandoning the circus seal idea

    • Is there a problem with them making a Pokemon starter that’s a bit more feminine? (yeah we gettin into this lol) The majority of the starters are more or less masculine. There are a few that are ambiguous, and even fewer that are pretty girly, but we’eve never had one that is straight up feminine and I say it’s about time we did. Also the circus idea wasn’t completely a ting. Popplio’s shtick is that it’s a performer. Yes seals are circus animals, but they didn’t have to stop there and it seems they didn’t lol

      • Chikorita, Mudkip, Piplup, and Fennekin were all appealing enough to attract female players. I Don’t see why they felt the need to go full female. I’ve never heard anyone say “These Pokemon are too manly for me”. I don’t have a problem with it tbh, I just think Popplio could’ve came out cooler, but that goes to a lot of other pokemon evolutions too. But this Pokemon is just as feminine as Jynx, so if they’re gonna intentionally make it female, then the pokemon should be female. I like the Siren idea, I just would’ve rather had them scrap a useless pokemon like Bounsweet(who looks too much like Hoppip and Cherubi) and used the water/fairy Siren there, instead of turning Popplio into it

        Reply
          • Not really a complaint, but more of an opinion. It doesn’t really matter to me tbh, i just think the final evolutions could’ve came out with better designs. But that goes to all 3 of them

        • Opinions, opinions, opinions. Look your use of the word “cool” seems a bit misguided. I for one think both of Popplio’s evos look “cool” despite being more feminine. What you’re saying is all subjective. If you don’t think it’s “cool” then that’s fine, but scrapping other Pokemon just so you can have your cake and eat it too doesn’t make any since. I would imagine that the idea behind Popplio was always what it is and never changed. It’s not like they had a super masculine Pop evo and then decided to scrap it for the siren. It is what it is and you don’t have to like it, but at least let other enjoy the fact that Popplio becomes a more feminine Pokemon. Not every person goes by strict gender roles. The world we live in isn’t black and white.

          • I never said nobody was allowed to like it. I was just stating my opinion on the matter, just like you’re doing when you make posts. Thats what the comment section is for. How is me stating my opinion stopping anyone from liking what they like? You can’t be that sensitive. Despite what it seems to you, a pokemon’s gender doesn’t really matter to me. It was just the design aspect I didn’t care for. Don’t take it to the heart

    • Popplio was more of your average performing seal, and as we can see it keeps it’s performer side through and through by becoming a singer and dancer.

      Reply
    • Sirens are seen as beautiful, ethereal beings. Circus seals are for entertainment purposes meant to appeal to crowds. Add those two features and you get Popplio3. I personally love the design of Popplio3 and I don’t think they abandoned the circus seal idea. In fact, they stuck with it and added the fairy-mermaid characteristic to add more flavor.

Wait…what? So people shoud not use Lopunny or Gardevoir or Milotic? What’s the point seriously? Don’t like it? Don’t choose it. Just stop saying bull*hit

      Reply
      • When did I ever say people shouldn’t use those Pokemon?? ? lemme know.
All I said was is that I feel they were more focused on making a starter that appeals to females, and missed out on better opportunities. So get tf out my face wit that lmao. Guess i triggered you with something i said

        • There’s nothing wrong with catering to an audience many wouldn’t think play Pokemon. Additionally, there’s no such thing as, “better opportunity,” when talking about designs because that’s all based on opinion and no matter what route they went with: clown, fairy, siren, etc… the Pokemon community, as toxic as it is, will find a way to discriminate because that’s what it does best: hate and not appreciate.

          • “the Pokemon community, as toxic as it is, will find a way to discriminate because that’s what it does best: hate and not appreciate.”

Thats with everything. No matter what it is.

          • That’s basically every fandom. I was in one once, and I still haven’t entirely recovered. I mean, I’ll come here and say what I like and don’t like, but that’s only because I don’t have any friends IRL to discuss it with.

          • “as toxic as it is, will find a way to discriminate because that’s what it does best: hate and not appreciate.”

You just described humanity’s entire existance since the dawn of time.

People hate things they don’t like because it’s the human thing to do.

  2. At Gamefreak they must have some problem with colouring the water starter. I remember back in 2013 I thought the same. Why on earth the blue is always that different from artworks? Take Frogadier and Greninja…

    Reply
  3. Dartrix: simple design, but color pallet doesn’t appeal to me, but Rowlet3 is strikingly amazing so the middle evolution doesn’t matter much to me, 2/5
Brionne: love the cutesy feminine design and I don’t personally understand the hate it gets for being feminine, there’s nothing wrong with it and if you don’t like it, choose something else, there are 3 starters for a reason and 100+ new Pokemon, 3/5
Torracat: the design looks great and am happy it stayed on all fours, plus the animations for Torracat are great, 3.5/5

  4. the only thing i dont like about brionne is the name. It literally sounds like a name you would give to a newborn.

    Reply
      • Doesn’t have to be, just very feminine so it’s fair to use she. I usually use “it” since they aren’t human but in some cases, it is clear that the designers tended towards a gender for that pokemon

        Reply
        • Well, that doesn’t make much sense to label them “it’s” because they aren’t human…. I have a dog and he is a boy dog and we call him a he even though he isn’t a human… And just because it looks feminine doesn’t mean it’s a girl.

          Reply
          • Your mind will automatically pick one, whether you choose to or not. That’s just a natural reaction.

And besides, dude, looks like a lady.

          • If there’s nobody owning the creature I always go for it until I can ask someone who knows or ascertain one or the other.

          • Sure, but it is just a natural reaction. Your brain sees feminine or masculine features and goes “ok cool that is a boy/girl” Trust me, I know all about this gender shit,

          • I refer to anything thats not a human or a pet as “it” tbh, feels weird personifying random creatures like that

          • Fair enough.

            To clarify:

Personifcation is about making something abstract into a physical form e.g. the grim reaper is a personification of death.

Genderising means ‘to assign masculine or feminine qualities to’.

And Anthropomorphising means ‘to endow with human qualities’, like what Beatrix Potter did with Peter Rabbit.

I checked before even suggesting it.
Personally I think genderising fits better because post of the -ise words involve the act of applying a quality to something, where as -ing implies a physical action or process.

            E.g.

ostracise = to exclude from a group or society
sleeping = the act of being asleep

          • English is one of the things I take great pride in. My English teachers did a good job.

I’ve suddenly realised I’ve never had a male English teacher. Weird.

          • If you see a dog in the street and don’t know if it’s male or female, do you assume its gender or call it an ‘it’?

          • Even if its mouth is around your arm?

By that point most people would be screaming “let go you stupid bitch”.

Personally I’d stick with ‘it’ and ‘dog’ until someone who could tell would be available to correct me.

          • Eh, my convincing is failing.

            Very well, continue assuming all dogs are male until proven otherwise ; n ;

          • I think it is just hard to understand humans. Since we kinda block alot of ourselves out? Everyone has a reason for acting the way they do that may not seem obvious. idk just saying words

          • Some people are just nasty for the sake of it though – i.e. they genuinely enjoy being nasty.

Besides which, my logic stands that I’ve never had an animal attempt to harm me without being provoked somehow, but I’ve had plenty of humans do so.

          • Well if you don’t know the sex of the animal and it is an animal then it’s ok to use “it’. In humans, it is better to use “they”, but the point is, it really isn’t a big deal to use she or he. Assuming gender isn’t a terrible sin

          • I sometimes use ‘it’ for humans, even if it offends people. It’s considered acceptable with babies but apparently people don’t like it when you use ‘it’ for adults or teens.

Assuming gender never used to be a terrible sin, but people get oversensitive about it these days.

          • Using “it” is just really condescending. It kinda dehumanizes the person you are talking about.

And yeah, assuming gender really isn’t something people should get upset about. In fact as a trans person, I kinda WANT people to assume my gender. 😛

          • Well, to get back on topic though, pokemon are highly humanized. IRL, animals don’t act in a comparatively masculine or femanine way. Pokemon, on the other hand, do, so it’s not wrong to assign and assume those genders onto them. I mean, within the context of the show, any pokemon is male unless stated otherwise, with a few inverses, like lopunny. The only time this was turned on it’s head was in this BW episode with a purrloin who was an attention whore.

          • It’s not, and yeah, I think ‘sentient’ would be a better word. That or self aware to a slightly lesser degree of humans. Kinda varies by pokemon, but the less monstrous ones are basically super emotive and relatable.

          • I dare say the monstrous ones are too.
I can imagine Giratina and Darkrai being intelligent and chatty.

In fact Volcanion, an otherwise hulking brute, is shown to be capable of good speech and thought in the latest film.

          • Really want to stay out of this but I want to know something. If “it” is dehumanizing and people get mad when you assume gender, then what are we supposed to do? O_0

          • 1. Just use they

            2. Im pretty sure most people don’t get pissed if you assume their gender. It’s just blown out of proportion by SJWs and it looks like more people do this. Assume away. If you’re unsure, just ask

          • One major flaw: you’re asuming all the others are as reasonable as you are.

The stupidity and arrogance of humans never ceases to amaze me.

          • The internet and the media highlight the worst of humanity. It has no time to highlight the majority of alright people. And if the other person isn’t being reasonable, it probably isn’t worth it to be around that person

          • I’m not just going by media, I’m also going by school experience and people I’ve met. The only time I’ve ever liked 90% of people in my class was college.
Prior to that there were only about 5-10% of people in my entire year group that I liked (about 200 people).

True, but then I’d be incredibly isolated and alone…
Which I pretty much am anyway.
Hrm, maybe that’s how I got “here”.
            I dunno.

          • Depends how people take it. I wouldn’t be offended at being called ‘it’. I’d much rather people use ‘it’ than make assumptions. (Not that they could possibly think I wasn’t what I am.)

I just realised I don’t like the term ‘dehumanising’ because it puts humans on a pedestool as being better than other species and non-human things.

Only problem with that is people might put you in a separate category. I’ve seen it before, one time all the people in my class waited for this person to leave and then asked around “was that a man or a woman” and they just all settled on other. (Except me because I knew the truth because I used to know the person).

          • I mean, you can use “it” but it’s just safer to go with “they”. Personally, I prefer ‘they”. And as to the dehumanizing part, I mean, yeah, humans are still animals, but we are also vastly more capable and intelligent. We are all individuals so what I’m saying is using “it” kinda ignores that. IDK.

          • More capable of creating technology I’d agree with, more intelligent is debatable.

Ultimately the only true advantage we have is the ability to record knowledge. If animals could physically record knowledge without having to just pass it down by word of mouth they’d probably reach at least stone age level in the next few centuries.
If we weren’t able to record knowledge, most major advances like electronics, the table of elements and nuclear power would never have been achieved.

Animals are all capable of different things though. There’s some evidence to suggest certain apes might actually be better at maths than humans (intelligent highly qualified humans who use maths regularly, not just average people who only use maths for shopping).

When everyone is an individual, being an individual is nothing special, it’s the norm.

        • Actually since “Brionne” in this case refers to a species and not an individual case, it’s only correct to use “it”.

And I for one would enjoy another controversy, they’re pretty funny.
Besides, this isn’t like the Beldum incident.

          Reply
          • Eh, I’d rather not risk it. The mods don’t like it and out of respect I’m not going to participate. Oh wait I already did oops.

          • If it’s anything like last time, they won’t notice for a few hours.

Besides, the Beldum incident was nice and respectful, and this isn’t even close to being as near the line as that was.

          • I didn’t think it was either, but moving came along several hours later and declared it a bad thing.

I’m naming it because naming things makes it easier for everyone to know what you’re talking about.

          • It was probably the most good-natured discussion about the matter that I’ve seen.

But then 80% of people here are civilised 70% of the time.

And it could have easily gone bad.

          • I love PokeJungle for that. I guess I’m kinda sucking up but I dont care. Actually being able to have a semi-political discussion like normal, rational human beings is rare on the internet

          • I can’t escape pessimism, it’s in my nature and my nurture.

If it didn’t cause flooding I’d be happy with 24/7 rain. The sun is hot and annoying.

If there’s no rain in Alola I will cry internally.

          • I suppose it depends where you go and who is there.
Even 4chan is capable of doing rational things sometimes.

I wouldn’t really call it a political thing though. Politics is usually more about how a country is run, we were just exchanging thoughts about our views of the world.

  5. I still don’t understand one thing: Will it be possible to walk around along with other trainers in the Festival Plaza (and during the special missions) or are the “other people” all going to be NPCs that look like other’s avatars?

  6. Ugh, my main problem with this news is the demo, I mean I’m really excited to playing the demo but I know that a data mine existing will tempt me to spoil the game for myself. I don’t have a lot of willpower when it comes to this kind of stuff, I guess I’ll have to pray to Azelf or something.

    Reply
      • Same… especially if the Pokemon you use is Ash Greninja…. although, it does transfer over so just to have it would be nice.

        Reply
    • It depends if Nintendo are going to do it right this time. All they have to do is wipe loads of data out of the demo.

Besides, us people in the UK are going to have the game spoiled by the US people getting it 5 days earlier.

Personally I’d pray to Uxie. Logos > Ethos IMO

      Reply
      • I agree but, to fire some Uxie logos back at you, I feel that as did nothing to prevent rom dumping last time, and it is even doubtful that they noticed what people had done in the west, they probobly won’t take preventive measures. Although I could be giving them too little credit.

        Reply
        • I might be giving them too much credit.
I’m convinced that it wouldn’t be that hard to prevent it by leaving the info out.
They’ve probably got stupid rules that would require them to test the demo before releasing it with the data stripped out though, which would make it unviable.

Personally I’d erase 80% of the pokedex and if any bugs or errors come up just pray nobody notices before the actual game arrives.

  7. Just saw the trailer and WOW! I love Dartrix so much! Torrocat is really cool as well (what’s the name origin? brionne too?), and Brionne is alright. I was hoping for dual evos but there’s still hope! Maybe Dartrix will become an archer in one route and still be a fancy owl in another? Maybe Torrocat will split off as bipedal and quadrepal? As for Brionne, umm, maybe it’ll have split evos focusing on the beauty aspect and the performer aspect? Hmm. I saw a screenshot on serebii where they have BP, so that’s a start toward battle frontier being confirmed (little steps, okay?). The plaza thing seems cool, the poke pelago seems odd, not sure how much I’ll use it. Also I’m kinda dissapointed we’re getting a demo, as it means that my time here before the game’s release might be cut short. I’m leaving as soon as we get any spoilers, so if I get word of the demo being datamined, sadly I’m out. Also the ash-greninja thing seems forced, like it was just put in for the sake of consistency, which is dumb considering that the games and anime are seperate canons.

    Reply
  8. Also Torrocat looks like a day-one fan art litten evo. I mean, it looks great nonetheless, but it’s just a bigger litten. Also I don’t see how that’ll transition well into Litten 3, but they did it with Dewott to Samurott so idk.

  9. I’m confused, is festival plaza live multiplayer (like the local wireless room in gen 4) or is it more like animal crossing’s home showcase (that’s the best example I could think of) where you have an npc represent you?

  10. I must say, I love the new rules of VGC. All use of just regular pokemon, nothing more nothing less. Also I love the timing thing. It makes battles more exciting!
