As announced last week today we’ve been treated to a megaton of new information for Pokémon Sun & Pokémon Moon! An all-new trailer has been released showcasing new Pokémon, Ultra Beasts, new mechanics and even more.
In addition to the English trailer, a Japanese trailer has been released containing some slightly different footage, though shares the same information.
New Information
- Ultra Beasts are revealed and don’t appear to be Pokémon as we know them
- Type: Null is a Normal-type Pokémon that has the ability Battle Armour. Type: Null is a synethtic Pokémon that was created to synthesize the strengths of various Pokémon, meaning it can adapt to any situation. The Pokémon’s mask is used to control it’s powers and also slows the Pokémon down
- Jangmo-o is a new Dragon-type Pokémon with the ability Bulletproof/Soundproof
- Alolan Raticate are Dark/Normal-type with Gluttony/Hustle for their ability
- Pokémon Sun & Moon are set 12 hours apart from one another, meaning certain events in the games will play out differently
- The Aether Foundation are a new group in Sun & Moon
- Lusamine is President of the foundation, Faba is a Branch Chief and Wicke is an Assistant Branch Chief
- Gladion is Team Skull’s Enforcer
- The Zygarde Cube is an item given to players that allows you them collect Zygarde Cores and Cells across the Alola region
- Poké Finder allows you to take photos of Pokémon using your Rotom Pokédex
- UB-01 is an Ultra Beast
That’s all that has been officially revealed in the trailers, though we invite our readers to discuss and speculate in our comment section below!

I just don’t understand the reason for it at all. I’m also having trouble understanding Type: Null. Why not Nullbeast or something?

apparently in all other languages its named something like Code:Zero, so it certainly seems to be a story behind the name.
Are we pronouncing the J as a J sound, because I’ve been pronouncing it as a Y, so like Yang-moh-oh and Yah-rah-ko.

It should have been. I think they were trying to emulate what they did with Ho-oh.

J making a Y sound makes it sound Nordic or Gemanic, and I’ve got a suspicion it’s supposed to be Chinese or something.
Names are effectively subjective in the long run. For example the Japanese call the Pokemon different things to us (Ditto vs Metamon). So it’s probably a case of that being a temporary name given to it by some scientist. Once it’s been classified by a true pokemon professor it will probably be given a different name.
I think it sounds fine. Alola is based off of Hawaii, so they are using names that sound distinctly “Hawaiian”.
From what I can tell, Hawaiian doesn’t have a J sound.
I bet the final evo will have a cooler name.

It took me a few seconds to realise that was his name ? Absolutely sick design however I love it.
I seriously believed it was a text error on the editor’s part. I could not believe what I was seeing. Game Freak obviously knew that these names are absolutely weird (and with no given explanation), so they grouped them together in one update. That was a smart decision.

Type: Null is seriously my favorite Pokemon of gen 7 so far. And, depending on certain conditions, it is somewhere on my top five (from two to four). Seriously love this thing.

i need more tea about the Ultra Beasts. Are they pokemon? Are they catchable? What are their typings? Are there more than one? Would all of them look like Lillie?
It’s not listed in the Pokemon section (at least for now), so I have my doubts that it will be catchable. I would love for them to be catchable though. And yes, I’d think there must be more than one if they label it UB-01.
Given the infomation we have:
1. No, their a different species.
2. Not likely. You can’t catch humans
3. given the 01 name and the text on the site saying their are multiple ones, yes.
4. No, not likely. It seems most likely that 01 simply chooses to look similar to Lillie. Like maybe Lillie’s its friend or something. So they’ll likely be something entirely different in the future.
We still don’t know why humans can’t be captured by pokeballs.
My theory about UB-01 looking like Lillie is either
A) It just likes her and/or wants to be like her
B) It’s young and somehow imprinted on Lillie
We’ll if we were to Occam’s razor it, the simple answer would be that humans and pokemon are completely different species. Like Humans have no genetic connection with pokemon what so ever, which would fall in line with the hoopa portal theory, but that’s really arguing obscure pokemon lore that really can’t be proven or disproven.
My Occam’s Razor would be “They’re programmed to scan the DNA of the target before trying to capture and fail when detecing a human”. Maybe I’m just thinking that because I’m a programmer though…

My money is them being the equivalent of humans or pokemon from another dimension. Hence the wormhole in the Japanse trailer.
My guesses: Not pokemon, uncatchable, no typeing or if it does have a type, Psychic (or fairy if it is some kind of spirit), there is only one UB-01 but there are other kinds similar to it. Just not the same shape or powers and not all of them resemble Lillie.
Hmmm…with all of the theories and speculations I wouldn’t be surprised if this happened. Took me 6 hours to do though..that block head.

I was watching a video about how to pronounce Hawaiian when the person started going through the names of colours in Hawaiian.
Turns out Akala means Pink.
Psychic island confirmed!
And Melemele means Yellow!
‘Ula’ula is red, so that’s bound to be the names of one of the other islands.
The 4th island must either be Poni (Purple) or ‘Ahinahina (Grey)
Most likely Poni given the colors we keep on seeing are Red, Yellow, Pink and Purple.
I was trying to find an image of that symbol the trial captains carry but I’ve got loads of things open so I just thought of Oricorio to remember the types, thought ‘Ghost’ and guessed the colour 😛
The trial captins things are green, blue, red and yellow. However there is some sort of keychain/charm you carry around that looks like a triangle that is red, yellow, pink and purple. Given that matches two of the known islands, its safe to say the other two are likely those remaining colors.
The colours on the jewelery are the important bits.
It’s Poni. The island trial charm has purple, and there was a sign thing with those colors.

Latin is interesting, I haven’t learnt any grammar or phrases but I’ve got a big Latin dictionary that I like to flick through because it improves my knowledge of etymology. 😛
The grammar is super simple compared to other languages. And it’s really easy if you know etymology, we used an etymology test as a placement test of sorts.

The long-legged blonde accidentally (probably not) turned lillie (probably her daughter) into a jellyfish “pokemon” and is willing to keep her experiments in order to create a world of perfect synthetic pokemon. Therefore she’s evil and the main antagonist of the game.

LOL Why is it that I seem to be the only one who has payed any attention to what Lusamine said in her little speech to the player? I payed close attention to it, and from what she said, it made it sound like they were the only way to get your Pokemon from your Red, Blue, and Yellow versions, onto your Sun and Moon games. She said that “Even Pokemon from DISTANT WORLDS FAR FROM THE ALOLA REGION, are worthy of my love.” So yeah my best bet is that they will allow you to transfer your Pokemon from those gen 1 games through Pokebank, and onto the Sun and Moon game.
That was confirmed long ago, but still a good catch.

skarmory is the primary suspect for the front legs, despite the color.
Actually they look more insectoid. Note the spikes on the side of the forearm. Similar to the ones on Heracross.

Oh I do think that they are very insectoid, but their really isn’t a pokemon that matches it. Perhaps its an amalgamation of pokemon? Like Skarmory, Heracross and some Yanmega for the color?

DNA isn’t as straight forward as ‘this sequence give the pokemon heracross arms’ after all. It’s a mixture that develops over time as the lifeform grows.
The head looks like a freaky combination of Trevenant, Absol and Conkeldurr, the body looks like a Houndoom and the back area looks like Vaporeon or something. It’s the weirdest thing ever.

Dusclops for the grey mane (?) hood thing maybe. Those hind legs ring a bell, but I can’t remember from where.
Tail looks like a Vaporeon/Empoleon cross.
Also I think it’s a combo of Vaporeon, a large cat/dog Pokemon (maybe a Persian or a Mighteyena?), a Kabutops or other large bug type for the front legs, the armor of a Rhyperior for the back legs, and possibly a Braviary for the head.

I was going to suggest this exact same thing a while ago. I think that’s a possibility. Something like the Light Arrow on Ganon, but in capture form.
I think it’s doubtful.
I’m leaning towards the idea that they’re just a sentient species that gets involved in the plot and then leaves once everything is resolved.
I think unless they get a proper name, it’s highly unlikely. We aren’t going to have like 3 or 4 pokemon (that’s my guess) called UB01, UB02, etc..
They’ll all get proper names. the UB thing is just a scientific designation until they reveal their true names or aquire names.

Of course it’s misleading. Just like a majority of rumors and jokes.
What if…and this is a big IF…UB-01 comes from the Distortion World, or one of the Time or Space dimensions from Diamond/Pearl? A big part of the lore with those legendaries was there existence in another dimension, much like the Japanese trailer shows for UB-01. Now, imagine a remake for D/P that takes place well after Sun/Moon, when they have more knowledge of these Ultra Beasts and how to access their dimension? I’m suggesting that we could visit the Distortion World or one of the two Space or Time dimensions to catch Ultra Beasts. This may be one of the craziest theories I’ve ever typed, but hey, the Sinnoh references are undeniable. This could be another stealthy hint towards that.
When I first saw UB-01 I immediately thought of an alien or a creature from a different dimension. That would be a great way to tie it into the games.

No question that it’s a multidimensional being of some sort. The only question is if it shares a dimension with those legends.
To be honest, it probably IS TECHNICALLY a Pokémon, just not one from OUR dimension which is why it doesn’t register to Alolan Pokémon standards (I couldn’t think of a better word.)
Also, I just want to say this: I’m not sure if I believe in the “Lillie is UB-01” theory. I think that is exactly what they want us to think. Perhaps it literally just has movements like a young girl due to its two longer tentacles? She probably is involved, but if she is, I don’t see us being able to catch her.
I don’t think Lillie is UB 01 BUT I do think they’re related (not like family)

My #1 theory for Type:Null would be that they tried to genetically engineer a new Pokemon by using parts of other Pokemon. (Vaporeon, Skarmory, Mightyena, Fake Arceus)
Type: Null reminds me of a Frankenstein’s Pokémon made of random leftover Pokémon body parts from the experiments.

Everyone’s doing it, so here’s my theory: Type: Null was created as a counter to the Tapu pokemon. The website says that “they”, whoever that may be, needed a pokemon strong enough to counter the ones spoken of in legend, like the Tapus.

I believe that, simply by the fact that they reference the creators of “Type: Null” as “they”, it’s not going to be Team Skull, but maybe the Aethers or someone else

in the 1st trailer (not the live-action one) Keep in mind that these are not official translations and someone
might translate them differently/more correctly. Sorry for the long post! And sorry it’s on the late side, I had
classes and I started this a few hours after the videos went up. (By now, probably better translations are up but whatev)
1st up is the employees 🙂
1st scene in building – “In the Aether Foundation, we offer protection to hurt Pokemon.”
2nd scene in cave – This one was hard, but I think it’s “So the cause of the Diglett rampage was likely the work of
Team Skull” (Diguda is the Japanese name for Diglett, so Diglett confirmed to be in SM)
3rd scene with Slowpoke – “Thank you, you really helped us there!” followed by “I’m glad you were there for me, so
good luck with island hopping!”
Now onto Faba
1st scene with closeup – “No, no, no, it’s rude of me to offer a late greeting” (Japanese lesson, iya iya iya is
used as a humble response. For example “Oh you did so well on your test, you are so smart” “iya iya iya, I just
studied a lot”, bearing that in mind, my translation might be off but the meaning is there) “I am Faba” (or some
variation of that)
2nd scene, with Hau and player – “Come on, our two best guests! You are in the Aether Paradise”
3rd scene with closeup arm moving – “Like Akara?, I feel the same about Pokemon protection, so I’m going to appeal
to the president.” (I’ve tried looking up Akara, but can’t find anything. Maybe a future character?)
Wicke time 😀
1s scene, closeup – “Welcome, Sun-san, Hau-san. I am Wicke.”
2nd scene, closeup but near an exit – This one is the hardest for me so far, I think she’s talking about ideas, and
talking about you being a Trainer. Need a second opinion on this one

1st scene, closeup outside – “I am president Lusamine.” (watakushi, to keep in mind, is a very formal and polite
version of the pronoun watashi, or I) “I’m glad to meet you”

Lusamine’s response – She’s kind of exasperated with Hau :3
2nd scene with Hau in the background – “Poor thing…”
3rd scene with Wicke – “I am protecting all beloved Pokemon and see to their safety.”

Sina – “And this beautiful lady’s lovely name is Sina.”
It’s followed by the 5 people dialogue and the giving of the Zygarde item dialogue from the English stuff
Now onto Gladion 🙂
1st scene before full face is seen – This was also hard, but I think it’s something like “If I was seen even lightly,
I was, at best, noisy.”
THen he introduces himself when you see his face followed by
“In order to train my buddy Null (Type: Null) we/it will continue to fight!”
Then (which is incomplete from what I see, since it ends so weirdly) something about now Team Skull will hire
bodyguards or have bodyguards. It’s super weird to me, hardest to translate yet. Definitely needs a second opinion.
Scene with pose (once again uncomplete since it changes scene) – “Hmph, what you want? I-”

This pretty much confirms that the artificial island will be visited straight after Melemele and before any other island, so I think it might serve as a sort of hub world.
Also this puts an interesting spin on what I noticed about the boat in Aether Paradise being the same as one docked in the harbour.

It wouldn’t have been a major catastrophe if you had followed or something, but like I say – it needs more data.
I’m hoping to focus on identifying as many locations as possible before working on the list of pokemon that have been proven to be in game.
I’m beginning to realise we’ve actually been shown a lot more than anyone realises, but nobody has tried to put it together like this yet, so hopefully once it’s together, things are going to make more sense and people will start spotting more patterns.
I can’t wait for it 🙂

Another thing: if Aether Foundation wasn’t evil and meant to be battled, I don’t think they would’ve showed grunts, or as they call them, “employees”.
Maybe that’s why they made it so clear that team Skull had to make their own stuff and they weren’t a rich organization; because Aether foundation has employees rather than grunts.
GF is introducing all these things… But we don’t know how they’ll tie together…. This will either be a cluster fuck or it will be amazing. Especially since it’s a nontraditional Pokémon game.
Is anyone else taking note at how many individual Pokemon seem to be available in this game? We’ve had appearances from Pokemon from regions around the globe in this game. The alolan regional dex must be the largest we’ve ever had with all the new pokes revealed so far + the ones that haven’t been revealed + alolan forms + pokes from older generations + these “Ultra beast” …. This is not a Pokemon game. This is shaping up to be the ultimate poke experience for anyone who has ever een a fan of this franchise
Just think, if pokemon GO hadn’t released, preorders wouldn’t be through the roof and people would think Rattata and Raticate are new Pokémon LMAO
