Sun and Moon Speculation Part III: Sun, Moon, and Alchemy?

It’s been almost four months since the initial announcement of Pokémon Sun and Moon, and the hype and speculation is running rampant. The floodgates of news have finally opened, providing us Pokéfans something substantial to hold us over until November. With the starters, two new Pokémon, the full region map, and many other news tidbits to look through, the initial announcement trailer is practically out of our heads. Except, there’s one thing from that trailer that has yet to leave my mind: “It all comes together…”

Many fans clung to these words claiming them to be evidence that we’d finally be getting a game with all the regions. That’d be the perfect way to celebrate a 20th Anniversary, right? Wrong. It’s unlikely Game Freak will ever make a game allowing us to travel every region because that minimizes the incentive to play other games. So, if not all the regions, what exactly is “coming together” in Pokémon Sun and Moon? The plot line that began in X and Y and continued into Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire’s Delta Episode: Mega Evolution, Infinity Energy, Project Azoth, and… Alchemy?Wait. I don’t remember Alchemy being a part of X and Y or ORAS. This is where Sun and Moon fit into the picture.

green-lion-devouring-the-sunThe Alchemy Legendaries: Solgaleo and Lunala

With the little information we have so far about Sun and Moon, all signs seem to be pointing towards a plot focusing on Alchemy. One of the clearest examples of this is found within the mascot legendary for Sun version, Solgaleo. Solgaleo is stated to be “the beast that devoured the Sun.” This statement confused a lot of fans because they assumed the legendary for Pokémon Sun would embody the Sun, not eat it. Believe it or not, imagery of a green lion devouring the Sun is common throughout Alchemical texts. This green lion symbolized an acidic substance that could dissolve metals, including gold. The substance created from the dissolved gold is what Alchemists used to create more gold from base metals such as iron or copper. (In some texts, the molten gold was also compared to the elixir of life, but we’ll get back to that in a minute.)

With Solgaleo being clearly related to this alchemical symbol, I began to wonder the significance of the moon in Alchemy and if Lunala could fit into this theory. There is a lot of speculation around what Lunala is based around. Lions are often associated with the sun and masculine energy, so Solgaleo is an obvious connection—Lunala, not so much. Surprisingly, I found a possible inspiration for Lunala that fits into Alchemy: the Egyptian Goddess, Isis (Pictured Below). Isis was a goddess often associated with the moon, portrayed with long wings and horns on her head. She was also the goddess of magic and Alchemy. Further, in Egyptian mythology, Isis is known for raising her husband from the dead, garnering her the title: the protector of the dead. If Lunala is based off Isis, this title of “protector of the dead” could attribute to its Ghost typing. With Lunala likely being based of a goddess of the moon and alchemy, both box legendaries obviously have some sort of ties to Alchemy.

Project Azoth in Sun and Moon?

So, how does Alchemy help the plot line of X and Y “come together?” Ancient alchemists had two main goals: wealth and immortality. Alchemists believed they could achieve immortality and turn any substance into gold if they could create a philosopher’s stone. A bit of a speculative stretch, but the diamond shaped stones in the Japanese logos for Sun and Moon (and now seen on the wrists of our playable characters) could somehow be symbolic of a philosopher’s stone. Philosopher stones were said to contain the “elixir of life,” or, less commonly known as Azoth. In Alchemy, Azoth is essential to transmutation and transformation. It is the universal solvent and sometimes described as the universal life force—“the animating energy of the body [and the] … enthusiasm that moves the mind.” What kind of life energy do we know of from X and Y and ORAS that helps transform the body of Pokémon? Infinity Energy, the source of Mega Evolution.

While I do not have suggestions for names of the new evil team of the Alola Region, I do know this: they are going to attempt to achieve immortal life through using either Solgaleo or Lunala in combination with Infinity Energy, or Azoth. I also think that Sun and Moon might see the end of mega evolution as we currently know it. I know this sounds like a crazy statement since mega evolution has become an integral part of the Pokémon metagame. However, the stones seen on the wrist of our playable characters are definitely not keystones. I speculate these diamond stones will act like a keystone, but instead it will tap into Infinity Energy in a different way allowing for Pokémon to transform/mega-evolve without the use of a Mega Stone. I also posit the storyline of Sun and Moon will include many references to Kalos, which may or may not result in needing to travel to Kalos in the post game. AZ will most likely make an appearance because he was the first person to learn how to use Infinity Energy (the Pokémon Universe’s first alchemist). The plot lines of the recent Pokemon games are getting darker and more complex, so what’s to stop GameFreak from going all out in these games that are supposedly meant to “bring everything together?”

So, what do you guys think? Do you agree that Alchemy will play a part in the plot line of Sun and Moon? What do you think of Project Azoth?

  1. The only I don’t get is that Isis is depicted while wearing sun disk(Hathor’s headdress so it has cow horns), not moon disk. She is not actually moon goddess but somehow she is associated with it for thousand years. Probably it all started after Greeks adapted Egyptian myths.

  2. Does anyone here have all the Vivillons? I just caught all the unown and kinda want to try and get the other vivillons that I don’t have, but dealing with the GTS is a pain.

    • I’m just going to say it thats a waste I have changed my Country to get them and All Polar form for me (One mostly only America and some other areas have)

      • You have huge dedication if you restart the game (even a second cart) for 1 Vivillon pattern at a time! <3

It would be faster reset once and change country to get rare pattern (read: Monsoon or Sandstorm), breed that, then trade it for other patterns in forums.

      • Omg that one is my favorite and I dont have it yet! If you have any free time tomorrow or another day I would be so thankful if you could trade me one

  3. Completely unrelated to the GTS comments below, but if you were a GF developer hired to fix the GTS to make it more fair and useful, how would you go about this?

    Reply
    • One simple thing
No event pokemon allowed to even be offered to be “looking for” fix that and everything is fixed IMO

      • Honestly i was thinking about doing this but sometimes especially when i try to completea dex i will give legends just for the last couple because i really need legends and who wouldnt take “palkia for swirlix”

          • I dont quite understand, i mean i guess good trades only take minutes but i dont think a time limit is ideal.
What are you trying to say? Because it doesnt seem to have much to do with me disagreeing with legend 4 legend

          • No one would take Palkia for Swirlix but that’s because its stays there. A much more fair trade, say Karrablast for Swirlix, will be gone in minutes.

So it makes you feel that GTS is all about people asking for legendary Pokemon in exchange for their trash, but it is clearly not the case.

My argument against legend for legend is that it will make the GTS feel empty.

          • Nobody would receive a palkia just for a swirlix? Thats sounds like it will be gone on seconds.

But i understand what you mean. There are really two sides to this.
#1. Make legend4legend but trades will be harder to access since regular4regular trades would be gone super fast
#2. Dont make legend4legend and just keep it how it is.
Honestly if they just got rid of the event pokemon option i would be Golden

    • 1. Moderators/AI Moderation
      2. Legends for Legends
      3. Ban the request of impossible pokemon (lvl 1 mew and stuff)
      4. Give incentives for players to use it

      • 1. Good
        2. You know that good trades go out in minutes so you only see the bad trades remain? If Legends for Legends were implemented then the only effect that would have is making the GTS empty.
        3. Good.
        4. Pokemiles already exist, that’s basically the reward for trading and battling.

        Reply
      • I dont quite understand the incentive part. Its literally trading, the point is to get something you want. Thats the incentive getting the thing you willingly received

        Reply
        • Yeah but with pokebank and stuff who even wants to trade anymore when you can do it with yourself. I guess pokemiles apply to the GTS? (I wouldn’t know, I only am offered pokemiles when I use the pokebank). But an incentive could be something like certain unobtainable HA pokemon are given to you as a gift when you hit 50 trades on the GTS or something and so on. Maybe even special moves on pokemon too.

  4. Related to the article:
I really do like this theory and i do hope sun and moon has plenty of alchemic references (which i do understand partly thanks to FMA:B). I also think Kalos will come back too making it “bring all together.” i know kalos isnt all the regions but kalos did its most in trying to include pokemon from many regions.
Honestly i have no idea what to think of Azoth it all just seems like whatever happens will surprise me.

  5. My Fan-fiction Theory:

Achieving immortality would be a neat and immensely intriguing goal for the antagonists or anti-hero characters. One of the biggest overarching themes between Generation 6 and Generation 7 has been that of, “infinity energy” or the life force of Pokemon. To create the Philosopher’s Stone or any equivalence of the object, one requires life force. In Pokemon, this could be infinity energy or the life force of Pokemon. To simplify it even further, the Pokemon equivalent of a Philosopher’s Stone could just require specific Pokemon. Thus, the antagonistic team must collect these specific Pokemon to create the Philosopher’s Stone. Maybe these Pokemon include the four guardians, Solgaleo, Lunala, and a few other Pokemon? To address Harmonic Convergence, maybe these Pokemon have to be collected by Harmonic Convergence and on that day is when their respective infinity energies can be used to create the Philosopher’s Stone. It would make for a very interactive and exciting plot or even sub-plot where you’re racing against time itself, battling and racing against the antagonistic team, and actually feel like you’re saving the world. But I feel like that would be too linear and predictable.

  6. Neat a new article by, a new face? 🙂 Great Article King Anteros. If this is your first article here then I welcome you to the jungle and look forward to seeing more articles from you. Also fairy masters ftw! 8. I’ve seen a lot of talk about Syncro-Evolution possibilities or no Syncro, If mega’s are coming back, But can’t we just focus on new Features, New Pokemon, Gyms, Gym Leaders, Towns/Cities, Another Rival with the Starter you have a disadvantage of? Stop trying to go in depth to get your Heart Broken by possibilities and focus on things that people won’t get into arguments over!
My pokemon ideas:A Platypus Chain(Water/ Poison), A Wallaby (Grass), An actual Kangaroo Chain(Fighting), A Chipmunk (Electric), A Griffin Chain(Dragon/Flying), A Racoon that actually looks somewhat like a Racoon Chain (??), A Meerkat (??)

    • ‘focus on things that people won’t get into arguments over!’ I don’t think this was written to warrant arguments. Speculation is fun because before a game gets released we can actually well, speculate. Regardless of whether this will happen or not isn’t the point, it was interesting to read and it’s quite refreshing to see rather than predicting gyms and pokemon types

  9. That was a great read. I really like the idea of an overarching plot line starting from one gen and continuing into another and it’s making me even more excited for these games.

  10. Nintendo’s 76th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders begins right now! Let’s hope we’re given some NX information, no matter how insignificant…

      • Nothing concrete, but Nintendo is still set on the March 2017 release for the NX. They said that they would have unveiled the system at E3, but they were so concerned with imitation. Their gimmick is something special, that’s for sure.
