New game could change Pokémon forever

Pokémon is close to 20 years old now, having been started in 1996 by Satoshi Tajiri, and the main series which began the franchise has changed only marginally overall. There are more Pokémon, more types, more characters and more ways to “Catch ’em All!”, but fundamentally each iteration has remained close to the formula introduced in Pokémon Red & Green.

new-pokemon-projectThis could change. We already know a new Pokémon project will be unveiled on August 26th, but fans have no idea what to expect. The print edition of Famitsu recently revealed, however, that this announcement is of a “very new development” for the series and described it as “earth-shattering” news. The image was shared by Japanese fan karubiimunomono.

We’re only days away, but this is our chance to discuss what could be coming to the Pokémon franchise and whether or not it will ever be the same again. Is it the start of a second main series? Is Pokémon re-tooling the core RPG? Will we finally get a Wii U game or a console addition to the main series? …or could it just be another spin-off title?

  1. Good night guys! I must get ready for the most intense, amazing, greatest, and fabulous climax in the history of television: The end of The Legend of Korra, Season Three!

  2. I’m very nervous that this game could potentially ruin the Pokemon series and make it completely different and take out some of the formula we know and love. From the wording that Famitsu uses, it sounds like it will completely take the franchise in a 360 turn.

  3. So what productive things have you done in the summer?
For me, I’ve honed my art skills a bit, bred a bunch of shiny Pokémon, and now I’m meddling with Japanese trying to learn it. :p

  4. I’ve always labeled myself as “Gay” or, at least, people have for the past 12 years of my life. It used to make me cry and almost hurt myself every time I got bullied for being too girly, bookworm, or even smart! Just because I was a little bit more intelligent than the average kid, I had to be stuck with a derogatory term slated under my human body. Now, it doesn’t bother me because I know what I am. 😛

  5. I just have this really bad feeling that this will be something that is not good if this new game is for the main series, that being major changes. I love Pokemon the way it is right now but the problem is we have tons of butthurt fans that are getting tired of the “same old thing”, so I can honestly see them making a major change in response of that criticism. I hope they take into consideration the things that make it successful too and don’t go Digimon/Zelda or something on us (but I can’t help but think from this wording that they could. IDK. I’m just super nervous about this.). August 26th can’t come fast enough. I honestly hope it’s that Pokemon Fighters game or another side series game, after all, a certain company that supposedly makes those fighting games is gonna be on the live stream?

      • Like I said, there will be a great divide. Some people will love it and won’t want to wait to see more, and some people will rage on the internet. We’ve seen this before, but I believe it will be at a much greater magnitude.

      • Nah I agree. I hope it’s not something like changing the battle element or something, because that is my favorite part about pokemon that gets criticized for not changing for god knows why

        • Yeah. I’m worried that Junichi Masuda will be like “Let’s change the entire formula because of all this criticism.” I remember in the RS beta, they said they wanted to add more than 6 Pokemon for your party and have more than 4 moves for each Pokemon. With an advancing franchise like this, I’m afraid it will have to happen at one point or another.

          • as would i. as well as expanding the party by two. but i think that would be the cut off for most people. yeah some want it to change but i don’t think that want it to change too much.

    • Wow. This was quite a lot. It’s not going to change the core formula of Pokemon. PokeJungle was expanding on the topic. It’s highly going to be Pokkken Fighters or the Pikachu Detective game. Don’t worry so much! 😉

    • I wouldn’t mind a huge change to the main series. Yes, I love it how it is. But I’ll also welcome any change gladly. I love the series and as I’m growing, I’m more than happy that it’s growing with me. Though if it’s a spin off game (which i can see why it would and wouldn’t be) then that just really depends on what kind of spin off.

    And with that, GOOD NIGHT!

  7. An important thing to note would be whether this game is being announced by ONLY Game Freak, or being assisted by another company. If it’s the latter, than it’s almost certainly a spin-off.

  8. Junichi Masuda hasn’t made a single comment. And if the President is
involved with this, it has to be something on a much larger scale than
the main series, perhaps an entirely new series separate from the main
series, a Pokemon Fighters series? Lol. Game Freak is only one company
that makes games for the Pokemon series, after all. There’s other companies that do games for the series too. The main series is just one of the very popular installments in this expansive franchise.

  9. wow this sounds like it could be amazing if done right. I’m hoping it is a home console main series!
Though part of me wonders if it’ll be this logical (?) kind of evolution, since it doesn’t sound quite as earth shattering as the above Famitsu article suggests.
Also part of me is a little skeptical. All Pokémon news is synchronised across the world these days. If there is anything major announced I’m sure the western world will get similar content posted on the official site simultaneously, but if it’s so big then why doesn’t it get a teaser?

  10. So apparently the voice actor of Iris will be a special guest (that’s probably what you were referring to, Igneous). That’s not a good sign.
