Pokémon is close to 20 years old now, having been started in 1996 by Satoshi Tajiri, and the main series which began the franchise has changed only marginally overall. There are more Pokémon, more types, more characters and more ways to “Catch ’em All!”, but fundamentally each iteration has remained close to the formula introduced in Pokémon Red & Green.
This could change. We already know a new Pokémon project will be unveiled on August 26th, but fans have no idea what to expect. The print edition of Famitsu recently revealed, however, that this announcement is of a “very new development” for the series and described it as “earth-shattering” news. The image was shared by Japanese fan karubiimunomono.
We’re only days away, but this is our chance to discuss what could be coming to the Pokémon franchise and whether or not it will ever be the same again. Is it the start of a second main series? Is Pokémon re-tooling the core RPG? Will we finally get a Wii U game or a console addition to the main series? …or could it just be another spin-off title?

I think this is either going to be Pokken Fighters where the “new development” is that battles are now more combat based and no longer fully reliant on special abilities (moves). However the “earth shattering” part of the article makes one think it could be more however GameFreak have so far teased 2 new games, “Pokken Fighters” and “Detective Pikachu”. Personally i would like to see Detective Pikachu be a crossover with Professor Layton or perhaps be focused on Looker as a main character in the same vein as Layton.
What i will say is that when GF teased Fighters it was part of an Evolution Of The Pokemon Series Video and this was the last thing to be shown in that video so it stands that this may be the “new development” they are talking abut and it certainly would make sense as the alternative would most likely be a Main Series game set on the WII U or something else entirely new and unheard of however one thing is holding this type of announcement back…… ORAS.
I highly doubt that GF would announce another Main series game (even if it is for WII U) whilst another Main game is unreleased, it just doesnt play well as they are going to eb focusing all of their efforts on promoting ORAS and will not want to be tied down to promoting another main series game at the same time. Therefore it is highly likely that this is Pokken Fighters and is the big follow up to that evolution of pokemon video we were shown last year.
