New game could change Pokémon forever

Pokémon is close to 20 years old now, having been started in 1996 by Satoshi Tajiri, and the main series which began the franchise has changed only marginally overall. There are more Pokémon, more types, more characters and more ways to “Catch ’em All!”, but fundamentally each iteration has remained close to the formula introduced in Pokémon Red & Green.

new-pokemon-projectThis could change. We already know a new Pokémon project will be unveiled on August 26th, but fans have no idea what to expect. The print edition of Famitsu recently revealed, however, that this announcement is of a “very new development” for the series and described it as “earth-shattering” news. The image was shared by Japanese fan karubiimunomono.

We’re only days away, but this is our chance to discuss what could be coming to the Pokémon franchise and whether or not it will ever be the same again. Is it the start of a second main series? Is Pokémon re-tooling the core RPG? Will we finally get a Wii U game or a console addition to the main series? …or could it just be another spin-off title?

  1. Did anybody actually think that it might have nothing to do with the games and anime?! It might be unlikely but they may be coming up with technology, where they are currently assembling a real life pokeball… but that probably wont happen. If they do make a game, then maybe it’s like a first person game on a game console like the oculus rift, but of course it would probably not be the oculus rift because nintendo only allows games to be played on their own devices…

    • Your statement is a bit odd. lul. (Not being rude.) A Pokeball in real life now with current technology. Not happening. That would take a ton of money and research to basically port an animal into data and plug them into a ball. I feel like the announcement is about a game.

      • yeah lol i was thinking about animal cruelty after i posted that… definitely not going to happen. but i was just trying to say that since gamefreak have been releasing new things that nobody has expected, i was just trying to direct the attention to something other than what everybody thought the news would be about

  2. The only thing that I can imagine being Ground-breaking & earth shattering is to introduce a new region & more new pokemon in the middle of a generation. I dunno man I have a strong feeling it’s going to happen. Sooo damn hype 0_0

  3. I not think it will be a main series game. But I have a feeling that it could be another pokemon stadium for the Wii U. It’s too early to announce another main series game, and considering the fact that they’re still working on and as. It’s just way too early for this stuff.where as a spin off would be more reasonable.

  4. If this is groundbreaking, it can’t simply just be a spinoff, unless it’s Pokenn Fighters. To be honest, I don’t have any idea what this could be.

  7. I’d like to see a pokemon (fakemon) designing game. Each evolution expands the size, movepool, and customization options. This would not be the whole game, but a “stunning” mechanic.

  8. Unless there is a nintendo direct, it’s not going to be a mmo or non-spinoff game. Remember guys, a pikachu detective game would be shocking, but I think the only thing shattering would be the fans hearts.

  9. It will either be that Pokken fighters game or that detective Pikachu game…. I suspect it will be for the Wii U though. However, the Pikachu game was already announced to be in development, so I wouldn’t think it’s that. Oh well. We only have to wait until Tuesday….

  10. Oooh I like this. What I expect is a pokemon game that plays like real-time strategy + open world, in 3d. Pokemon battles are all turn-based strategy. Changing the core essence of pokemon being turn-based that lasted since red/blue, I feel is an “earth-shattering” news.

    • I feel like it will be this but as Pokken or Battle Revolution typed format, not an open world. They’ll use Iris using Axew in the game to show it off.
      Overall it’ll be a spinoff.

      • Well the reason I say open world is because exploring was was one the main essences of pokemon as well as capturing. Tajiri designed pokemon as a nod to bug catching in a forest in his childhood. That is more true to pokemon than action.

        • An open world would be fun. Yet, I wonder how they would flesh it out. We’ve been seeing Pokemon as a linear game. So, this would definitely be a new direction!

          • Exactly my thoughts xD I’m thinking this pokemon game will be a lot more of a personal experience story wise

          • Of course. Yet, I wonder how they would program the game. If you could easily roam the world there would have to be a lot of ideas going around. Zelda for Wii U is open-world yet it took 4-6 years to fully create the idea.

          • Free world would take quite the long time. Idk if any of you played the elder scrolls V skyrim? That was free world and probably the buggiest game ever. Pokemon would be just as buggy. Not to mention they are trying to prevent cheating and hacking tis the reason why X and Y hasnt been succesfully hacked. At least not in the USA. My point in that is a free world Pokemon game would be buggy amd glitchy therefore easy to hack and mod for your own desire. I dont think the pokemon company is that stupid or naive to give up on the “No Hacking Our Systems Or Games” . When cheaters do so the company loses money. Sorry to chop down your hopes but free world is probably not gonna happen.
