New game could change Pokémon forever

Pokémon is close to 20 years old now, having been started in 1996 by Satoshi Tajiri, and the main series which began the franchise has changed only marginally overall. There are more Pokémon, more types, more characters and more ways to “Catch ’em All!”, but fundamentally each iteration has remained close to the formula introduced in Pokémon Red & Green.

new-pokemon-projectThis could change. We already know a new Pokémon project will be unveiled on August 26th, but fans have no idea what to expect. The print edition of Famitsu recently revealed, however, that this announcement is of a “very new development” for the series and described it as “earth-shattering” news. The image was shared by Japanese fan karubiimunomono.

We’re only days away, but this is our chance to discuss what could be coming to the Pokémon franchise and whether or not it will ever be the same again. Is it the start of a second main series? Is Pokémon re-tooling the core RPG? Will we finally get a Wii U game or a console addition to the main series? …or could it just be another spin-off title?

  1. First ever HD 3d pokemon game. With unique open world ( Roughly the size of 10 Orre regions together 😉 )

A familiar story, with new elements such as a unique gym battle challenge order. Live real time Pokemon apperences as you walk bike around, eg Sandshrews popping out of the ground and realtime weather such as sandstorms and rain ;)That add to the battle strategy.

    If only 😉 🙂

    • Few flaws. An open world Pokemon game would be sick. Real-Time Pokemon appearances… IDK. That would get annoying after a bit. Real-Time Weather really needs to be added! It only expands on the experience!

      • Yeah but they have said in the past that an mmo pokemon just isn’t going to happen 🙁 That being said u never know 😉

      • Well tru, it would get annoying after a bit, but that’s like saying that cats and dogs walking on the side of the street gets annoying after a bit.

You may be conflating wild encounter mechanics vs environmental ambiance effects. Because as with series tradition, we SHOULD only get attacked in tall grass.

  2. ;-; I’m afraid it’ll vary too much. I love the mainstream games for a reason, but if this is a mainstream game (even for Wii U) with large changes then I dunno how I’d feel about it.

    • I’ll tell you how you will feel.

      Stage 1: Screaming and Fangirling
Stage 2: Crying wishing it was out already
      Stage 3: More fangirling
Stage 4: Theory’s about what’ll be in the game
Stage 5: Get weak at the knees
      Stage 6: Faint
Stage 7: Wake up on day of release 😀

  3. Well to hype it up even more, it’s confirmed that several Pokémon Company executives will be in attendance, including president Tsunekazu Ishihara and others. There will also be two unnamed guests. My guess is Masuda and another Nintendo executive. The announcement has now been called “shocking” and “earth shattering”. My guess is Pokken Fighters. It won’t be something like the next generation, because we know that’s already past early development. My hopes would be a new Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness type game where they get more into shadow Pokémon. If shadow Pokémon come to the main series, that would certainly change things big time.

        • It’s not hard development tho. They could have said nothing and the announcement would still b earth shattering. It’s just Famitsu teasing.I’m sure Joe will throw something up, but this my not b seen as an immediate response type of post. Either way I’m excited lol

  4. I’m just gonna stay with my theory of it being Pokken Fighters for Wii U because if I imagine some RPG open world awesomeness, and it’s not, I’ll be crushed.

  5. Gosh. My heart got crushed for a moment. It seemed like Pokemon was ending! lul. Still, now I really wonder what they are going to do. Pokemon has been around for a long time. This is going to be sweet. Inb4 Pokemon for the Wii U.

  6. I think that it will be Pokkén Fighters or whatever the name is! It is a new way to play Pokémon, I think that we will have the main protagonist and when you have to fight you will be the one fighting the Pokémon (Like you will be Charmander fighting Pikachu)

    • Umm… I don’t think Pokken Fighters would be like that based on the concept image. That’s basically just Mystery Dungeon with fighting. Not too revolutionary in my books.

  7. Although it may not b from this announcement what I really want to c is a Pokemon game that’s entirely open world. It doesn’t have to b an actual mmo. All I want is a game that doesn’t make me feel like I’m walking around a region made of halls and corridors.

  8. I just hope that they don’t stop making Pokémon how it was, I really want somehting new but lets face it, we all want to keep the RPG like we’ve had ever since Generation 1! And in 20 years, I want to see my kids and myself playing the Generaation 9 RPG with new graphics!

    • I want the rpg we’ve had only enhanced. lol Pokemon is a great game, but it can b better. I’d almost like a main series game that strays from the norm and has a slightly different story. The get the badges and save the world story is fine, but I’d like those to b part a bigger story instead of them being a giant part.

  9. What if they are pulling a zelda U and they are a doing a open world pokemon game with no limits and u can basically do the gyms in any a order….. u see like the trainer actually walking around and pokemon hiding in tall grasses. i can dream but can this only be a dream i hope it isnt

  10. Holographic Pokemon Imaging!!! Holy shit this is going to be insane. I’m going to project a massive Tyranitar on my front yard to deter criminals.

But on a serious note this is very interesting I’m looking forward to it. If its earth shattering news….It better be good.
