Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: New Features

Once more from the top

A few weeks back we brought you the latest episode of Road to ORAS, featuring on Pokémon Contests. This week we’re ushering in a new topic: New Features. As you’re probably all aware now this series has been commandeered by a certain someone, DefensiveBastiodon. He takes full credit for the below article, and you can expect to see much more from him in the future; he even asks me if he can write articles on a frequent basis!

Due to the uncertainty of when Corocoro was going to hit, we pushed the publish date of this article back to allow space to breath. As such this was written by DefensiveBastiodon before Super Secret Bases were announced for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Road to ORAS: New Features

With many years of new features being introduced to the Pokémon world, there is an exceptionally large possibility Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will adopt some of these features. From the night and day in-game effects of Gold, Silver, and Crystal, to the Player Search System in X and Y, there are many things that have a solid foundation in the future games; not that they always work as planned, of course. (*Glances at the GTS requests for level ten legendaries*) Notable features will return, as the games have been referred to as “complete remakes of the original games,” though they will obviously have a tweaked stories, as learned from released screenshots.

In game time sequences of night and day were removed from the third generation games. It was a favored feature of the second generation that allowed you to catch certain Pokémon during the day and some at night. It was brought back in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum with different times of day: morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Seeing as it has been in every game since the fourth generation, one would suspect it will make a return once again for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

The lower 3DS screen has allowed for various functions to be added to the games. In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, the DS’ lower screen was used for the Pokétch. In Heart Gold and Soul Silver, there seemed to be a downgrade for the lower screen. It was simply used for easy access to the menu, a run lock, and easy access to your selected key item. In Black, White, and Black and White 2, The lower screen was used for the C-Gear; the C-Gear was like an early version of the PSS in X and Y, but had a few more features such as the choppy video chat and infrared connection option. It also allowed the player to connect to the Dream World to deposit a Pokémon. X and Y expanded the C-Gear in a way that it wasn’t even called a C-Gear anymore. The Player Search System allowed players to easily connect with their friends or other players around the world. X and Y also introduced Super Training and Pokémon Amie which gave you an alternative for EV training and a way to actually interact with your Pokémon, respectively. Seeing as Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald had the PokéNav, which had various functions, a fan could only wonder how Game Freak will bring back that feature, if they do. Pokémon X and Y had some of the biggest changes to the lower screen. GameFreak has many options for exploring the bottom screen.

Super Training was a feature in X and Y that gave players an alternative to EV training. It was a mini game in which you attacked balloons with balls to score points. Once you reached a certain amount, you received a hit amount of EVs depending on which level of training you completed. Seeing as hoard battles were also introduced and more likely to progress to the next games, Super Training may not be in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Hoard training was much quicker with the Power items and was more efficient. It was, however, more difficult to fine tune stats, but super training fixed that. Both have their pros and cons, but Super Training may have a smaller life span.

Even though it obvious they are coming back, the 3D graphics need to be brought up. Previously in a 2D world, Hoenn only seemed tropical and big. Thanks to the released trailers, fans have been able to get a glimpse at how the new graphics will impact the games. These new graphics will give details to the region we’ve never noticed before, and possibly making it even bigger…

Of course, there are many other features I have left out of this discussion. Feel free to comment and discuss any new or old features you would like to see in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

  1. Quick, off-topic and random question: Does anyone have a Diancie that they can trade me really quickly for my pokedex? I would trade it back immediately.

  2. I’m not gonna say what I want to say, cause I do not want to get involved anymore with this. It causes things like this, which I hate.
I’m just gonna go. Have fun.

  3. I want to share a little project I’ve been working on. I’ve been using Google Drive to make it, but you need a Google Account to view it. IDK if everyone has one though.

    It’s Pokémon Related.

  4. Lol, way to listen to what moving said in the featured comment. I think everyone has stated their views on the matter, and it’s time to move on.

    • Well when I arrived here… before things started getting controversial, they were already off topic. I was trying hard to find the Pokemon related comments that related to the article that I didn’t read, but everything was Smash this Smash that Luigi this Daisy that. Ppl should just join a ClubNintendo forum or something.

  5. When you been sucking up to the mods since 2009 (before PJN was even known) and you still don’t have a prominent role on this website (besides asskissing, that’s your role), just hang it up. You’re losing in life. Retire. XD

  6. I hope the VS Seeker makes a comeback. I mean if they’re going to nerf the Exp Share then it’d be a great way to train and level up (obviously it’d be too easy with the new Exp Share, hence why I think they’re gonna stick with the phoning)
Concerning fhe bottom screen, hmmm. Well, I actually likes HGSS because I felt it sped things up for me, didn’t need to bring up the menu as I could already be in it ‘sub-menu’ in literally a second. Amie is back but idk, I think it might be for contests only…?
I do hope the PSS system is in, or something like that cause it’s useful (like, it’s the main one I had on my bottom screen for XY)

    • If PSS or something similar doesn’t return then they’re stupid/I’ll eat my hat.

I’m sort of hoping they improve some of the UI stuff. I liked how HGSS had the A button on the touchscreen. They need to make it so that having a Pokémon selected in party brings up a one page summary on the top screen too. That was a huge oversight in XY.

  7. I would prefer a major update on online battles. I wish I could set the team size, level and battle style as I want for match-making, not just for battles with friends who I don’t see everyday.
I would also prefer a ladder system with different tiers like Riot does with League of Legends for example (bronze, silver, gold etc.)

  9. Okay so Hoenn being my favourite region one would think id be against changes but i totally see room for improvement both in game and with features so here we go:

    1) Pokemon Contests need to be highlighted more- they were a great feature in the games and made even more popular by the anime. I am hopeful given the nod to them and “new pikachu forms” in CoroCoro that they will have more of a presence in these games… i also want them to return to being scattered.

    2) Underwater Secret Bases! The new rock formations seen on the water routes in the map give me hope. Not to mention i should and must be able to make my dream of an underwater gym become a reality.. i just never thought it would be my gym 🙂

    3) Speaking of that very exciting feature they seem to have added to secret bases i really do hope that have a badge creator of some sort that enables you to challenge each others “gyms” and collect everyone’s badges.

    4) PSS should return- it was great in XY and unless that have improved it i see no reason why it should not return here. I know people think that the Pokenav will take its spot but i see no reason why the pokenav couldn’t be a 4th screen for the bottom screen.

    5) More in game mega’s! Perhaps not with gym leaders but certainly the elite four and champion!

    6) I know i said not gym leaders however i would like to see them have them for rematches and…

    7) Challenge Mode!! Seriously what the heck happened to this after BW2??? It was great although really should be an option from the beginning. GF have shown that they can program the data in for not only 2 but 3 difficulty settings for a game so why not bring back this popular feature and make it even better.

    8) MEGA MILOTIC and MEGA LUDICOLO! That is all 🙂
