Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: Pokémon Contests

Back for more…

Over three weeks ago we brought you the first entry to the Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. A little later than we initially intended (due to issues with my internet) I am pleased to bring you the second episode, focusing on Pokémon Contests.

Once again this article has been written by the fantastic, close friend of mine, DefensiveBastiodon (who takes both full credit for it and once again my lovely profile.) Expect more from him in the future. Little does he know that I despise passing my ideas for article series on to others, but I can’t deny that he has does an excellent job thus far!

Road to ORAS: Pokémon Contests

The third generation of Pokémon introduced a series of mini games called “Pokémon Contests.” In these contests, a Pokémon was scored based on their condition on moves. They were held in Contest Halls scattered across Hoenn. In the show, characters would flaunt their well groomed monsters and take part in battles to show off fancy move combinations to win the hearts of the Judges. The original contests were eventually expanded in Sinnoh into Super Contests. It added three categories for the player to partake in: Visuals, Dance, and Acting.

Focusing on Hoenn, categories of the contests included Pokémon Conditions: Tough, Cute, Smart, Cool, and Beauty. You could improve the condition of a Pokémon by using Poké Blocks. Poké Blocks were created using various berries scattered across the region. Throw them in the Berry Blender and take off! The better you were about pressing the button on time, the smoother the Block would be. Poké Blocks also introduced new evolution method for Pokémon; Milotic could only be obtained by maxing out a Feebas’ Beauty condition and leveling it up. (This being after you find one of the elusive demons.) Aside from Blocks, scarves were also available to the player to boost the condition. You could receive these in Slateport City from the Pokémon Fan Club President.

The secondary portion of the contests was partially based on your results from the first round of conditioning. The more hearts you received, the higher the chance you had to be first the next round. Secondary judging focused on attacks. Different attacks had different levels of appeals from the audience. To go along with that, some of them even had secondary effects, such as lowering the appeal of other Pokémon or earning extra hearts for yourself. If you use a move that is in the wrong category, such as a Smart move in a Cool category, you’re not going to appeal to the audience well at all. This will lower your score.

There were four ranks to Pokémon Contests: Normal, Super, Hyper, and Master. The rank, of course, controlled the level of difficulty for each contest. You couldn’t move up to the next rank without collecting the ribbon from the previous rank. In Ruby and Sapphire, ranks were scattered (as previously mentioned) throughout the region; this, however, was changed in Emerald to where all four ranks were in Lilycove City.

The final feature of contests were the multiplayer options. Players could connect their copies of Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald to compete in the competitions. This was one of the big features of the third generation; the capability to play with three other players.

Seeing as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are getting closer and closer each day, and we are seeing new Megas appear. I would personally love to be able to use different Megas in contests for a boost in appeal. (Mega Milotic being better for Beauty, as an example.) To add to that, having online multiplayer for contests would be great too! I’m pretty sure that will happen considering they were a spectacular addition to the original games. If anything, they should make the contests more like the show: allow us to use different move combinations in battles for special effects! We already have the pledge moves, but to utilize that feature with contests would be amazing. I can see it being kind of like Super Training in all honesty…. What changes would you like to see in the contests for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire? What are your thoughts about contests being revived? Leave any comments and discuss them!

Once again we now hand over to our readers to get discussing the hopeful comeback of Pokémon Contests and the ideas shared by DefensiveBastiodon in the article.

  1. Stupid Mega Milotic arguments…honestly what makes things like Gardevoir and Mr. Mime Fairy?
Game Freak can do whatever the hell they want with Mega Milotic…Including completely changing its typing to Dragon if they really wanted do.

      • Look you all know i personally dislike fairy types but seriously i’m fighting out of logic that this Pokemon has nothing to do with Fairy Types
Everyone is just so convinced that this Pokemon will have access to Mega Evolution and is guarantied to have a type change
but you know something we don’t have any authority of what will happen
I say not a fairy because it has nothing to do with fairies as it being a Ugly Fish that seen as truly beautiful then became beautiful but nothing more
while the rest just hastily call for fairy typing because of Looks and is being supposedly based on Sirens which can be classified as Fairies but really nothing else
We don’t even know if they’ll even give it one, its their game and they make the rules not us

  3. I’m definitely looking forward to 3D Contests 😀
They will most likely make them Wifi compatible too, which will make them even better. I think Mega Evolutions will increase your hearts depending on each Pokemon snd category, e.g. Mega Alakazam for Smart, and Mega Sceptile for Cool 😉

  4. Milotic, Fairy or no Fairy?

    No:
Milotic, although a beautiful creature has yet to showcase any capabilities of learning Fairy-type moves. If it does turn out to be a Water/Fairy, it has to either have a revamped move-pool or be able to learn Fairy-type moves through move tutor or TM’s. Unless this becomes a reality, it’s secondary typing will be all but useless except for the Dragon-type immunity. Beauty and healing prowess does not always equal a Fairy-typing as seen with Celebii, Jirachi, Blissey, Audino, etc.

    Yes:
Milotic’s origins can be traced back to sirens, beautiful creatures capable of enthralling victims to a murky death. It can also be said that because of this Milotic has a genuine “Fairy” gene. However, the only support for Milotic’s supposed Fairy typing when it Mega-evolves is because of it’s vague origin.

I would say there’s a minimal chance Milotic get’s a Fairy-typing when it Mega-evolves. However, you never know with TrollFreak.

    • I believe it will.
Milotic can have a revamped movepool. You never know.
Water/Dragon would fit as well, because it’s based on a sea dragon, but I really want it to be Water/Fairy. It’s not vague. Sirens can be considered Greek fairies. They don’t have much else in their mythology that is considered a ‘true fairy’.

    • Now this is the kinda facts i listen too
I don’t want to be public enemy #1 just because i poo-poo the Fairy Type
But i just want some facts and logic to be present in a way that both parties can agree to

    • people want fairy for defensive reason not for offensive, sure milotic has decent SpAtt but her HP/SpDef is what shines for milotic

      Reply
    • It CAN happen. Milotic can become water fairy and have a new ability that makes normal type moves fairy types. Like refrigerate. Idk. I think thats a possibility.

  5. O no! I just realized that ORAS comes out the same day as Mockingjay part 1! ;-; Which midnight release do I go to? 🙁 I might be able to go an 8:00 showing but that means I’ll be like last in line to get ORAS. UGH. First world problems. Anyone else have this problem? Just me? Okay.

    Reply
      • God I know! The gamestop I got X & Y at (which is the same one I will also be getting ORAS at) did a thing that if you got there early they put you into groups or time slots so that at 11:50 they line everybody up in the group number they got. Which means I won’t be getting ORAS at a decent time since the line will probably be hella long..

        Reply
      • Well I would, but it’s kind of a tradition for me and my friends to go the midnight showings of the franchises we all like and it’s one of the only times we’re all together. 🙁

        Reply
        • (Shhh, I might be missing it too to go see Mockingjay Part 1! You can learn so much from Katniss and you have to be ready because the government is already corrupted lol!)

          Reply
          • (I didn’t even like the book Mockingjay but I’m betting the movie will make it better than it was for me :o)

    • I’m not concerned with seeing an early showing of Mockingjay.
I’m not to into the series like Divergent.
If it it was Insurgent, then we’d have a huge problem.
Then again, it would give me an excuse to go to a midnight release for a game. Never done that before.

      • I usually don’t. I’ve only done it for Halo 4 and X & Y. But I have to for ORAS….even though I will have class at 9:00 the next morning Dx But I don’t have to play it necessarily… I guess I can just get it and then when I get home from class I’ll already have it! >:D

  7. Mega Milotic will probably be revealed in CoroCoro with updated Contest info. They’ll probably connect the two when talking about Pokeblocks and their flavours. Then go into Feebas’ unique evolution method, and finally Mega Milotic.

  10. Milotic War, how a pretty, calm Pokemon can divide a whole nation… wait, I’ve read that somewhere before… what is it XD

  11. Am I the only one who hopes that they don’t change Milotics evolution back to what it was…? And if they do make it pokeblocks again, also keep the prism scale as an alternate method? Ooo, what if they gave Milotic a split evolution and it evolves into two different pokemon depending on which method you want to evolve it with.

  12. For me I think design wise milotic should be fairy type. And yes there are many different ways you can think about it. My argument is that she is in the dragon egg group but her design can not be for dragon tbh. But who knows absol grew wings for fur and he’s still dark type only

    Reply
    • Wait u lost me
So saying pro fairy or con fairy?
But this is what i’m fighting so hard about, that everyone is going by either Looks or its siren origins (when originally it was damn fish) (and mostly by looks)
Also Absol doesn’t have wings its just the fur standing up

      Reply
        • Duhh i know what a siren is
Its a said to be a beautiful maiden that used its breath taking looks and enchanting singing to lure wayward sailors to their unknown doom by either killing them by eating them or leading them into harms way and in some cultures that were regarded a mythic beings such as fairies, nymphs and witches

And then Milotic came from a ugly fish named Feebas
I’m saying Sirens are sirens and Milotic is a Ugly fish that got lucky

          Reply
          • That is like the base of the Feebas line
That something so Ugly can evolve to the most beautiful Pokemon

          • Don’t hate on the Milotic beauty, LOL. Yeah, the enchanting singing? You’ve heard Milotic’s cry right? Sirens are mythological, hence fairies. Bang.

          • They why doesn’t it learn Charm or Sing
the only moves it can learn that a siren would learn is Attract and Captivate
Not even Dazzling Gleam which could’ve been a dead ringer for them lovely rainbow scales but they don’t

          • Sirens were actually not beautiful. They appeared to be due to their enchanting voices. They cast a spell on them to make them see beauty when really they look like harpies (they are related to them).

          • Wooohoohohooh
            Did you call Milotic Ugly?
I am sorry but can you not notice it has been called the most beautiful pokemon for YEARS

          • I am not calling any Pokemon Ugly or Beautiful
Its just everyone calls Feebas Ugly (pokedex wise)

          • that got lucky
Im saying that Feebas was tattered and old looking Pokemon that no trainers took a second glance at so they disowned its looks and deemed it “ugly” but then it evolved into this breath taking beauty

      • I’m going by origins, because it is a likely candidate. It might not happen, but it could based on being based on sirens. I have logic here too.
I also said it likely could be Water/Dragon because it is based on a sea dragon.
Either way, GF can do what they want. I’m jjust saying it most likely will be this, based on origins.

    • What if they blew away the water typing with the Mega evolution and made it Dragon/Fairy!!! Dragon immunity!
