Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: Pokémon Contests

Back for more…

Over three weeks ago we brought you the first entry to the Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. A little later than we initially intended (due to issues with my internet) I am pleased to bring you the second episode, focusing on Pokémon Contests.

Once again this article has been written by the fantastic, close friend of mine, DefensiveBastiodon (who takes both full credit for it and once again my lovely profile.) Expect more from him in the future. Little does he know that I despise passing my ideas for article series on to others, but I can’t deny that he has does an excellent job thus far!

Road to ORAS: Pokémon Contests

The third generation of Pokémon introduced a series of mini games called “Pokémon Contests.” In these contests, a Pokémon was scored based on their condition on moves. They were held in Contest Halls scattered across Hoenn. In the show, characters would flaunt their well groomed monsters and take part in battles to show off fancy move combinations to win the hearts of the Judges. The original contests were eventually expanded in Sinnoh into Super Contests. It added three categories for the player to partake in: Visuals, Dance, and Acting.

Focusing on Hoenn, categories of the contests included Pokémon Conditions: Tough, Cute, Smart, Cool, and Beauty. You could improve the condition of a Pokémon by using Poké Blocks. Poké Blocks were created using various berries scattered across the region. Throw them in the Berry Blender and take off! The better you were about pressing the button on time, the smoother the Block would be. Poké Blocks also introduced new evolution method for Pokémon; Milotic could only be obtained by maxing out a Feebas’ Beauty condition and leveling it up. (This being after you find one of the elusive demons.) Aside from Blocks, scarves were also available to the player to boost the condition. You could receive these in Slateport City from the Pokémon Fan Club President.

The secondary portion of the contests was partially based on your results from the first round of conditioning. The more hearts you received, the higher the chance you had to be first the next round. Secondary judging focused on attacks. Different attacks had different levels of appeals from the audience. To go along with that, some of them even had secondary effects, such as lowering the appeal of other Pokémon or earning extra hearts for yourself. If you use a move that is in the wrong category, such as a Smart move in a Cool category, you’re not going to appeal to the audience well at all. This will lower your score.

There were four ranks to Pokémon Contests: Normal, Super, Hyper, and Master. The rank, of course, controlled the level of difficulty for each contest. You couldn’t move up to the next rank without collecting the ribbon from the previous rank. In Ruby and Sapphire, ranks were scattered (as previously mentioned) throughout the region; this, however, was changed in Emerald to where all four ranks were in Lilycove City.

The final feature of contests were the multiplayer options. Players could connect their copies of Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald to compete in the competitions. This was one of the big features of the third generation; the capability to play with three other players.

Seeing as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are getting closer and closer each day, and we are seeing new Megas appear. I would personally love to be able to use different Megas in contests for a boost in appeal. (Mega Milotic being better for Beauty, as an example.) To add to that, having online multiplayer for contests would be great too! I’m pretty sure that will happen considering they were a spectacular addition to the original games. If anything, they should make the contests more like the show: allow us to use different move combinations in battles for special effects! We already have the pledge moves, but to utilize that feature with contests would be amazing. I can see it being kind of like Super Training in all honesty…. What changes would you like to see in the contests for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire? What are your thoughts about contests being revived? Leave any comments and discuss them!

Once again we now hand over to our readers to get discussing the hopeful comeback of Pokémon Contests and the ideas shared by DefensiveBastiodon in the article.

  1. I can only remeber 3 Contest Champions from my experience
    Blaziken both Cool and Beauty

  2. My Swampert that I used for contests didn’t make it to the transfer. Transferring mons to future games wasn’t something I ever thought about. I think I have my contest Sceptile though…

  4. I can definitely see mega’s playing a part in the new contests. Mega-Up and increase the appeal of a move by +3 hearts that you normally wouldn’t of got if you didn’t evolve.

Mega Jynx & Mega Milotic for contests!!

    • How outraged would everyone be if Mega Milotic became a Water/Dragon or a Water/Psychic but what if became a Water/Dark type

          • How
How does its looks make it a fairy when it has 100% zero affiliation with the Fairy Typing
No Fairy Type moves by level up or TM
Water 1 and DRAGON Egg Group
It has nothing to do with they fairy and you know it

          • My point is even though it is in the Dragon egg group doesn’t mean it will be dragon so might want to lowercase that ‘DRAGON’

          • Think of the Field egg group. I don’t see any Field types. It’s just classified that way because of the body shape or species in some cases.

          • Same argument goes with Gyarados, lol. What makes it water/dark? The fact that it gets Bite? xD The only thing I can come up with is that it looks “scary”. And if the logic to that is true, Milotic is beautiful, making it fairy type. Just kuz you hate fairies doesn’t mean it won’t be one. xD

          • I’m just saying its just bad writing to make it a Fairy type just based off of Beauty and the Siren claim is bit of a stretch (Which i still don’t understand how those singing evil temptresses are fairies (they just remind me of banshees)
And FYI most Fairy types aren’t the most beautiful they mostly range in a cute pure way

          • I’m not even gonna waste my time anymore. The evidence is clearly in front of you and you refuse to accept it. Water/Fairy

          • Its based on Fairy Floss which is what cotton candy is called in Australia and the Cupcake evo is just following the idea of sweet treats
Swirlix and Slurpuff are fairies with a good origin

          • Because they had immense beauty and could trick sailors. Fairies were evil sprites, too! They weren’t always good, pretty little things. They caused mischief. Sirens could fit the Fairy type.
Fairies could be cute and beautiful. And fairies could be ugly and mean.

          • Alright fair enough (I just regard them as evil female spirits and i rarely see evil in fairies nowadays)
            But still zero Fairy anything

          • It’s your own opinion :3
Fairies usually have a good connotation nowadays. No one really believes what people in the past believe now, anyways. Fairies had more of that evil thing in the past.

          • Pokemon Y “It is, however, considered by women to be cute.”

Pokemon X “Many women like to frolic with it because of its affectionate ways.”

          • I can get how Sirens might be classified as Fairies or Spirits and that Oar fishes are rare
But i still have some valid claims how it is not a fairy

          • Fairies cause mischief in homes and that’s what Whimsicott does
(also it think GameFreak just labeled them as Fairies to give every region at least one Fairy)

          • Um that second part
What sounds better, add a fairy type because it looks fairy or make a fairy because the regions needs a fairy type

          • They both could be true
The point is that Milotic doesn’t even need a damn type change and it really doesn’t need a fairy typing

          • But both have mythological origins, which fairies are mythological beings.
Granbull being based on a fairy dog in Celtic mythology and Milotic being based on sirens, mythological beings in Greek mythology.

      • I said that I would laugh so hard at that lol. And that I was expecting one of the two to happen, Water/Dragon Mega Milotic with Multiscale, or Water/Fairy Mega Milotic with Serene Grace. I feel like the dragon one is going to happen since she is in dragon egg group and would give her counterpart Mega Gyarados an unfair advantage being Water/Dark if they make it Water/Fairy.

        Reply
          • What if for kicks they made Mega Milotic the Tender Pokemon into a Water/Ghost type to represent the siren you guys put so much faith into for being its cause of fairy typing

          • Well that’d be actually quite cool. The only mega that I’m looking forward to becoming a fairy though is Altaria. I was never head over heels for Milotic lol. I always presumed it would get either Water/Dragon or Water/Fairy.

      • You just don’t want it to be Fairy do you
        Just take it like this
EITHER WAY no matter the type, It will CRUSH your ground types, and ALL your pokemon

        Reply
        • Now that makes sense because Mega Evolution does not always entail a type change but now everyone is treating it as mandatory

          Reply
      • Water/Psychic could be awesome :3
But I much prefer Water/Fairy. It’s based on sirens, mythical beings. And Oarfish, which are rare, sorta beautiful fish.
Then again, Water/Dragon would fit too, because it is based also on sea dragons and the Loch Ness Monster.

  5. After reading this article, I still don’t understand how contests work. I’ve yet to win one in Sinnoh. However, I still support contests nevertheless and look forward to seeing how they’ll be implemented this gen. I would love to see Mega Evolution utilized as well.

Also, we can finally have Gen V-VI pokémon participate in them. I look forward to participating in contests w/ Meloetta!

  6. I’m not a contest person myself, but multiplayer contests would be fun, and using moves together would look awesome! :3

  7. They can have cool prizes for winning Master Rank as well. Like certain mega stones for different Master contests. Milotite if you win Master Beautiful contest, Cameruptinite if you beat Master Tough and so forth…

  8. Grand Festival:

    – Show Off Phase, you must show off your Pokemon and earn as many hearts as possible
    – Battle Phase, you must battle trainers using only beautiful moves
    – Double Battle Phase, must battle trainers using only cool or cute moves
    – Finale, judged based on how many hearts you earn

    Rules and Points:

    1. using moves that have a different classification than required will subtract hearts
    2. winning against your opponent will get you 5 hearts
    3. winning against your opponent during the Double Battle Phase will earn you 10 hearts for each opponent you win against (max. 3)
    4. Mega-evolving is allowed and can earn you more points
    5. every coordinator starts with 5 hearts

    Reply
      • I think that’s unique and will actually allow coordinators to train their Pokemon to have different moves since most just have a Pokemon with all attacking based moves that are mostly classified as “cool.”

  9. You know how Jasmine, Pryce, and Wittney (I think) make cameo appearances in the crowd in Hoenn Contests? What other gym leaders do you think will make an appearance?

I say Fantina since she’s a Contest Champion (or whatever they’re called in the Anime).
