PokéJungle Winter Tournament ’13/’14 Sign-Ups — Closed!

A few weeks back we revealed our plans to launch a network wide tournament, mainly taking place on PokéJungle.net. We asked our readers to complete a quick survey regarding competitive battling and their skills and opinions on how we should hold our tournament.

Today we are pleased to announce that the tournament will begin in the coming weeks once all preparations are complete. However, we can’t start a tournament without competitors! As such we’re proud to open sign-ups for our tournament. The sign-up period will last for approximately 72 hours, after which we will close the submission platform, sort entrees and contact any unsuccessful sign-ups. Official tournament rules will be released in the coming days alongside finalised battle formats and more, so please stay tuned!

It is important that if you wish to take part, you fill the form below with correct information. If we believe the information you have provided is incorrect we will sadly have to disqualify you from the tournament. If you wish to back out of the tournament after signing up we will provide a form later for you to fill out, it’s likely back outs will have to count as a forfeit. As always if you have and questions of queries please feel free to contact us or chat with us in the comments or site chat!

  13. sigh >.< i really dont understand how people successfully do pokeradar … i tried observing every grass that was similar to the one i found 2 zoroarks in but they all looked the same . and once i finally tried going to one that looked like his, it wasnt him :/

  50. Prankster Volbeat has got to be the worst Prankster user I’ve seen. This came to mind when i bred an illumise the other day, and a volbeat came out. Prankster Volbeat was used in non perma sun teams when i used it, that or a terrible Tail Glow Baton Passer

    • I believe its activate in a patch of grass. go to shaky grass, encounter, run/fight, watch grass again. i believe that the faster the grass, the better chance of continuing a chain you have, because fast grass supposedly means the same pokemon from the previous encounter. shinning shaky grass is a guaranteed shiny, then the chain resets itself.

    I already have a mega gardevoir on my team.
    Should i swap Gourgeist (Ghost/Grass) and Houndoom (Fire/Dark) for Shifty/Cacturne (Grass/Dark) and Chandelure (Ghost/Fire) or not?

          • Speed? That’s unorthodox. He has really nice HP and mixed with the defense he can eat up attacks. What is Gardevoir maxed in? I feel like you need a special wall. Snorlax maybe. It will also allow to to switch into Ghost type moves that are effective against Gourgeist and Gardevoir.

            Gardevoir – Speed Sp atk
            Nidoking- Speed Attack
            Lanturn- Hp Def
            Gourgeist- ???
            Houndoom- Sp.Atk Speed
            Noivern- Sp.Atk Speed.

          • Well right now you have no special walls and 3 special sweepers. One physical attacker isn’t enough (have you seen Jordin’s Blissey XD). Gourgeist need Def. some HP and some Special Defense to be viable.

          • Noivern is good, and Gardevoir is a total sweeper xD I might need to swap Houndoom for another fire type but i’m not sure which to swap it for.

          • Sadly, the available fire-types in the game are measly, not counting Talonflame and M. Blaziken. Camerupt is good for sp. def. and switching into Lanturn is a great counter for water types.

          • Lanturn knows Volt switch so it can be swapped out anytime.
            What about other fire types that aren’t currently available in this game?

          • In game, nine tales is bulky in sp. def. Out of game, theres heatran and not much else. Firetypes are not known for bulk.

          • R U joking? Houndoom is bawse. Chandelure can’t be mixed. Houndoom can! Houndoom M. Evolvs, and Unnerve really helps against Lum Berry Dnites. And he;s faster than chandy, and specially bulkier i believe.

          • His defense and HP are thin and he is really useful if you want to get a couple good hits in quickly, but Chandelure has more endurance and a wider movepool to counter its weaknesses, i.e. energy ball. I might be biased because I’ve never really liked Houndoom much.

          • How do you not like Houndoom? he is the epitomy of badass Pokemon. He’s the only real reason i remember gen2 exists. Anyway, now that Chandy lost shadow Tag, he really isn’t as good. Flame Body is okay, but most people use special attackers against it. and besides, Houndoom can cover it’s weaknesses. I normally run D. Pulse, Flamethrower, Solarbeam, and Sludge Bomb. But i swap out Flamethrower for HP Water for my rain houndoom. Chandy has uses, but i find more use in houndoom, personal bias aside

          • I’ve only ever found solar beam useful in a Sun team, and on Houndoom, you can’t really afford that extra turn to load-up.

          • Depends on the situation. You could run power herb, but i find that SolarBeam should be used for predictions. and if not solarbeam, i use Shadow ball. the sp.def drop is really useful in a lot of situations.

          • True. But then that leave you open to attacks from Water and Rock/Ground types. I guess it all comes down to opinions and preferences.

          • Yeah, and opponents. since everyone always uses the same pokemon, you know what to carry. so many Dnites and Scizors

    • Personally, I’ve never used Gourgeist, but i think it’s better than Cacturne, unless you want to go for water Absorb cacturne with spikes. Houndoom beats Chandelure always, unless you’re talking about trick room, then Chandy wins. And typing wise, Chandy has the advantage, but Houndoom has Sucker Punch, which is great with all these megas and such

          • People look down upon my team because they’re all shiny. I want to prove that they are as competitively useful as regulars and not just dumb luck with crappy stats.

          • I know, but the effort that must have gone into them really makes me feel that you had more experience then you let on. i like the fact that you have competitive shinies, because they’re beautiful, but it just seems weird to have an entire team of shinies already, and some people would call you a hacker, but i won’t infact, i’m interested in trading with you. do you have any other competitive usable shinies that you’d be willing to trade, or just your team?

          • I have exactly 29 different shiny Pokemon. I don’t hack, I don’t think it’s possible in X and Y. I just have great patience, that’s all. Friend safari and fish chain are my methods.

          • Are any of them competitive usable? and would you be willing to trade any of them? I’d be really interested in trading with you. I’ve spent hours in friend safari, and have gotten 30+ chains in fishing and have gotten nothin. your devotion impresses me man, and i respect that

          • I do have a 5 IV Jolly shiny Sneasel, but I think I prize that the most, so I won’t trade it away. If you would like to see my shiny collection, feel free to ask me to trade. Though I doubt I would trade any away, they are too special for me.

          • Well, if you are a collector, i can trade shinies for shinies if you’d like. Not sure if i have any shinies you’re interested in, but if you are, just ask.

    • Great game, and not to be rude, but no offense, if your new to competitive, why do you have a team of likely IV bred, shiny, ev’d pokemon? There are people who’ve been competitive for years who can’t say that. It just seems odd

      • I’m new to battling. I do E.V train them, but I don’t battle. I just started fighting people recently. I’m more of a Pokedex completionist and shiny hunter. Please do not take offense.

          • You can say that I have a competitive nature. In my Science and Engineering Academy, we have our own Pokemon League (to which I’m the fire gym leader, apparently). My friends sort of taught me a lot about competitive.

          • That’s awesome. I got into competitive by choice, because it seemed like a whole different aspect to pokemon, and i also have a competitive nature. And, you are a shiny collector/hunter, right? Do you have shiny dedenne?

        • From what I’ve read and heard, if one is looking a different direction than the other 4, there is a high chance that one has the hidden ability. I’ve never tested this theory myself though, just read up on it

          • It may be true. I do happen to notice that it doesn’t happen every time while I EV horde train and such. I just never bothered to catch one

          • i did some research and i’ve found something. Gligar’s hidden ability is immunity so try to poison every gligar and the one who don’t get poisoned will have het hidden ability 😛

          • Well, to really test it, you can always poison the one looking the other way in a couple of hordes you find to see if it really is that way or not

          • So far this theory doesn’t hold much ground for me. I have somewhat tried it, albeit not for too long, maybe about 4-5 hordes, and the ones pointing in a different direction did not have their hidden ability.
            Maybe a bigger sample size is needed, but it doesn’t look promising.

          • Ah, okay. All Serebii’s site says is that there is a “slight” chance that one or more can have the Hidden. If the different looking way is connected, who knows. I take “slight” as 5-10%

  245. Hey guys I just came up with something that will blow your mind
    Blaziken speed boost baton pass, so it goes like this
    Blaziken can either use endure or agility depending on the situation and then get a speed boost,
    Then if you think they may KO you, you use endure, another speed boost so that’s possibly 4 levels of speed, then use protect, that’s 6 levels of speed, and finally you use baton pass to tyranitar which gets a 6 boost in speed, making it a insane sweeper

    • When I transitioned to high school (im in 10th grade now), it was pretty hard. I was going from a school that was pretty bad (it was growing, and because of it, was dropping in quality), to a high school that was extremely prestigious and work-demanding (im in the Ib program, if you know what that is). Not only that, but most of my friends were either leaving to another school or staying at the one I was at. I had ONE friend going to the same school I was. Soon I made more friends, I was able to conform to the workload, and school is going pretty good now :3

    • To be completely honest, high school is shit no matter where you go. Nothing prepares you for college at all. Go where you want to go, because you only go to HS once, and it really makes no difference later.

      That is unless, of course, the one school provides such a better education that it will help you get scholarships and possibly a free ride to college, those are things you should consider.

          • Community colleges are a two year schools. You are awarded an Associate’s Degree.

            Four year schools, or universities, award you a Bachelor’s Degree.

            I, right now, have an Associate’s in Paralegal Studies and will get my BA in HRM. However, because I transferred from my Community College to a four year uni, those credits I finished are also transferred and replace classes towards my BA. Not all of my credits transferred but most of them did like my general eds (math and science and stuff) and some business classes that are similar to the courses offered at the Uni.

            Hope that makes sense!

          • Great and beautiful school which is the best around VS. bad school which has more crime, etc. where most of my friends are going to. Education is honestly the winner in this situation. No matter how much you cry about missing your friends, you will eventually make new friends. I’m going to have every single one of my friends sign my yearbook and I’m going to treasure it forever. I already saw this one cute girl and funny girl the day I went there.

            Point is, education is more important, memories are made of Bliss(ey), and just follow your heart.

          • I know…. I’m just terrified… And that school had a nude photo scandal last year…. So I’m nervous about that happening to me.

          • True, and I do avoid the “dating” bullshit at my school, but some asshole kid’s gonna give it to me, and I’ll be the one in trouble. I have that bad of luck.

    • Whatever you decide will affect your life. I could have changed schools my senior year but I wouldn’t have been able to work, which means I would’ve never met my boyfriend. The HS show choir also won best in state for small division. Best year ever.

        • There’s no such thing as the one, but if you do believe in fate, then ‘fate’ will bring you together in the future. I have a friend who fell in love when she was 15 but her mom forced them apart…so she got into an abusive relationship…25 or so years later…met her old love again and bam they are getting married. Kinda funny how it works out.

  337. Someone on DA had an idea that fairies are weak to poison and steel because poison represents pollution and steel represents industrialization, both which harm fairies’ natural habitat, the [magical] forest. S/he mentioned fire does too but fairy isn’t weak to fire, fire just resists it.

    Anyone got made up theories why fairy has the random typing it does?

    • Steel, because in folk lore, iron is the “blood of the earth”. It was used to ward off faes & mythical beings, just like silver was used to ward off vampires/wolfs etc. There was a theory that something like an iron horse shoe, can be used to repel faeries or used to nail them to a door to prevent other guests. Its why theres a move called Geomancy, which is the study of divination/earth’s soil etc. I believe a Poke like Xernias, a fairy, studied earths materials which is why it gains a boost in sp atk/speed etc.

      Poison because how can their little bodies deal with such toxins. Also because since Faeries are linked with fairy tales, I’ll use Snow White as an example. Poison apple was deadly to her. So I guess thats where this weakness derived from.

    • Has potential. Nintendo just never makes smart moves at launch and never give full potential or or anything for there products. They could have screwed 3D and made it the Nintendo HDS

    • it’s only getting hate because the ones hating on it are close minded and know nothing of the system or its capabilities, they just see nintendo and automatically think it is garbage and going to lose the console war…. when it’s not even in it really… PS and Xbox are in it though because their fan base is exactly the same with very few exclusives between them, nintendos fan base is different though, and I would say based on the fact that I work in retail in electronics, that the PS is winning over the xbox, and the wii u in my store in particular is actually selling just as well as the PS, but still the graphics are just as good, and nintendo will be here for years to come, even if their consoles don’t sell enough to make a profit, their handhelds will, because no one can deny that they dominate the handheld market. Rant over. sorry about that, I am very passionate about nintendo, and do own the other systems but they really don’t appeal to me that much as nintendo does, because like I said the fanbase is and always will be different.

    • Showdown still has plenty of bugs. While I do understand your concern regarding those with or without access to 3DS, it would spoil many of the contestants’ time and effort that was put to breeding, raising pokemon since the announcement of the Tournament a month ago!

    So I had an idea for my boyfriend’s Christmas present–gonna hatch him a shiny Petilil. He loves Lilligant, and was trying for a shiny for a little bit but gave up because of his hectic schedule/having other games to play.

    So was wondering if anyone could give me advice to hatch a good Petilil…egg moves, preferable nature, etc. I don’t need perfect IVs (he’s not that competitive) but I may as well make her usable if I’m going all out hatching a shiny. Any advice appreciated!

    • It has gooey as well, I want to make a goodra set but I don’t know what to give it move wise, so far is has curse acid armour counter and iron tail, but curse and iron tail won’t be very good with a hindering nature so yeah, what do you think I should do?

    • Not bad but, Nido, Toge, Dnite are all weak to ice, Dnite especially. I like it, but unless Sabotage or secret weapon counter things like Megasnow or Banded Ice Shard Mamoswine or Weavile, you’ll have a bit of a bad time

    The Daily Defensive Theory

    So I have been thinking. BW2 was released October 7, 2012. 94 days later it was announced that X and Y would be coming in the Fall. XY was released October 12, 2013 worldwide(kinda). There is an old couple that says there anniversary and gives the types. (Ruby and Sapphire). If you add the anniversaries, you get 85 (40+45). 85 days from October 12th is January 5, a date close to previous announcements. I’m guessing we will gets announcement of some kind around that time. Just some defensive thought.

    • Tyrantrum is better, but Eviolite Tyrunt is usable in lower tiers. Try this

    • Congrats! The two IV’s I always want perfect for my Pokemon. Unfortunately for my Shiny Dedenne, speed is great, attack, not so much. Dedenne, despite being cute, has a pretty horrible moveset.

    getting a sassy/quiet aegislash, EV train it in def and sp def and the last bit in hp, then let it learn sword dance to raise its attack stats.

    does that sound like an ok set? or would its att stat alone not help ?

    • Give it defence and attack, mainly because most ground and dark attacks are physical apart from dark pulse, lands wrath, mud bomb, night daze
      Oh and don’t forget aegislashes base stat in defence Form is 150 and special is 150

    • Needs more offense, because when it goes to swords stance, all of those defense EVs will be meaningless. You opponent will use Swords Dance/DDance on the King’s Shield and then you are in a bad position.

        • Slower and weak to Earthquake, Close Combat, Surf, Bullet Punch, Grass Knot, Stone Edge. All of those moves are really common and most of them are TMs

          • perhaps some defense investment and trick room setup might remedy this, I’m pretty fond of slower, bulkier pokes so maybe I’ll take a crack at using him after I finish my next team

          • My whole team is Bulky pokemon, but I only like bulky pokemon with plenty of resistances to common moves. Weaknesses aren’t important as long as there are solid resistances. Aurorus should never invest in defense, but it should definitely invest in Sp.Def!. I reccomend Assault Vest + Sandstorm Support. You will be amazed at it’s special bulk!

          • In fact, this is fanstastic partner for Aurorus! Physically Defensive Hippowdon + Assault Vest Aurorus!!!

          • Aurorus can take out grass/water/ice pokemon that Hippo hates with Freeze Dry + Rock Move, while Hippo, can tank all of the Bullet Punches, Close Combat, Earthquakes, Stone Edges thrown at Aurorus!

          • not too shabby, If I do say so myself, although I like hail more IMO, Sandstorm teams are awesome, any other pokemon that would fit these two?

          • Gliscor! works beautifully! I would also consider Magic Guard Pokemon as well! Like Clefable with Wish or Reuniculus!

          • Looking at its stats and common weaknesses to moves, it seems like it should have more physical defense to compensate for its common weaknesses to Bullet Punch, Earthquake, etc. However I don’t completely disagree with Assault Vest+Sandstorm, Aurorus doesn’t really NEED non-attacking moves and big defenses are always welcome to me. btw Why does Aurorus get so much electric coverage? it gets Thunder Wave, Charge Beam, Discharge, Magnet Rise, etc.

          • Pinsir got a lot of popularity from Aerilate giving it a Quick Attack on par with an ExtremeSpeed, plus it’s Mega’s stats are monstrous

The past few days Ive been working on making another team though I picked a few pokemon so far but now need to breed them xD I’m going to start training my pokemon that way @TCMets our next battle will be one really worth remembering I’m going to keep trying until I get better I still need to learn a whole lot more since I’m a noob when it comes to competitive battling my pokemon are strong I just need to learn what works so they can reach their potential I want to be able to give you and whoever I face off against in the future an exciting battle one that you will honestly enjoy when your up against me ^.^ it doesn’t matter win or lose but I want it to be where we are both having fun so it wont end too quickly 🙂 I honestly loved that battle even though it ended fast because it taught me something it made me want to try harder not to win but to give you a better experience and to become a better partner for my pokemon as well 🙂

          • You should just start with your favorites! Best to think less in the beginning and just start with something and keep battling with it to see what it’s good against and what it’s bad against! And then I’ll try to see how well they blend with each other! I like Mamoswine, so I would choose that! xD

  792. Today, my brother texted me asking which Pokemon game i have and what the differences were. I thought he was getting back into pokemon but he was actually planning on getting me Pokemon Y for christmas. I was happier when i thought he was getting back into pokemon.xD
    Today was an alright day and i finally got the chance to ask this girl to the movies, I asked if she was free this weekend and she said no, that she was busy and said sorry but walked with me while i awkwardly tried to make small talk. I wish i had said what initially was going to say. Never leave things unsaid.

    • hm… well, id say the wii u, but that’s because i didnt find interest in many games on the ps3. literally only like 2-3 games i liked out of all the hundreds .. i think? but my taste in games are pretty kiddy compared to most . if you like shooting games, storyline games [like heavy rain], and stuff like gta, i’d say the ps3

        • sadly, not into any of those series and the only one outta that list i bought was little big planet XD; which is pretty cute but my patients for games at the time was a little low so i found it confusing to get lots of things . but i did find it cute

          • Yes, little big planet is adorable. Final fantasy is visually stunning, Telltale Games the walking dead won game of the year and has a powerful story that will cause you to feel attatched to the characters and probably cry like a baby at the end, the best part was that it was only $25

          • Okay? Hydro Pump isn’t really reliable to me. THe amount of battles lost because of Hydro Miss is too damn high for me to use it. I normally use a Pain Split Rotom Fan set.

          • Rotom -W typically has max HP and max def. Even Choice Band Brave Bird can’t 3HKO. And 99% of rotom-W are chesto rest. Hydro Pump missing 3 times in a row is really unlikely!

          • Yeah, but that’s why I don’t plan on BRave Birding Rotom. As a matter of fact, as unlikely as it is, a Grass type Natural Gift would be the only chance physical T flames have against Rotom W, the wretched cur. However, special T. Flames can Solarbeam, and, if the sun is up, Hydro Pump wouldn’t do as much. T. FLames bulk isn’t the best, but it isn’t the worst either. And how often do Rotom W have special investment?

          • Rarely! Bulky Offense is the popular playstyle! Natural Gift works once! And it does a bit more than half, but never a OHKO. Talonflame’s atk is not very high!

          • Okay chill, no need for exclamations reg. Look, a bit more than half. A crit might Ko, and special T. FLame is obviously never heard off, so it wouldn’t be expected. Call it biased, but I’m tired of seeing Rotom W. I prefer Rotom Fan competitively, as Pain Split Rotom Fan has beaten Rotom Wash on multiple occasions for me. I was asking why everyone uses Bold on rotom, not the fact that rotom w counters tflame. i never plan on using rotom wash anyway. I wondered why bulky rotom is more common than offensive period, or pain split. i go for the unexpected, so popular playstyles are lost on me, which is why bold seemed like an odd nature

          • I didn’t. I thought i offended you actually, made me thinking i was picking on one of your favorite pokemon. I just can’t stand all of the rotom wash and scizor and d.nite i see. there are over 700 pokemon, why only use those three? I understand that they are in OU for a reason, but something different, like Meowstic, Barbaracle, Skuntank, Rotom Fan or anything else is what i want to see.

          • Oh I know. In fact, I never use the commonly used pokemon. Most of my team is with underrated pokemon like Chesnaught and Arcanine. But I’ve played a ton on Showdown, and I had to design my team to counter the popularly used ones. And so I researched what they typically ran so I could design my team to counter it. That’s why I know so much about it.

          • Yeah, i understand. I understand the feeling of having to play a certain way instead of the way you want. Having to play with choice items just to ko pokemon you couldn’t otherwise. I take it you use chesnaught to counter rotom. What do you counter d nite with? I use Weavile or Alakazam.

          • Actually I don’t really have a solid counter to Rotom-W. But for Dragonite, I typically bring in arcanine with intimidate and burn it with will-o-wisp so Weakness policy or dragon dance is made useless while healing back up with morning sun. I play more stall/defensively. Then I switch to chesnaught and lay spikes and heal with synthesis.

          • I see. Seems like a good strategy. BUt what about Toxic Heal Gliscor. I normally use Exploud, as Boomburst goes through sub.

          • Yeah Stall teams are hard to use because you have to make sure that your opponent doesn’t set up on you. For gliscor, I use Magic Guard Clefable can wall it all day with wish + protect. And it doesn’t care about Toxic. I give it good enough defensive investment to avoid 2HKOs from Earthquake. While I just keep up the Moonblasts .

          • Clefable? odd choice. I figured Skill Link Cloyster would be the obvious choice for most Gliscor. When i used Poison HEal Gliscor, i ran elemental fangs and eq or sub, protect, night slash sky uppercut. But clefable sounds decent. Do you get a lot of negative feedback and rage quits with your stally stategies

          • Oh yeah but that’s more in lower ladder. Once you get to 2000+, people battle more seriously and don’t rage quit. In lower ladders, people just want to 6-0 the opponent, and if they can’t do that then they just rage quit.

          • I know that feel. Rage quitters really make Pokemon boring And the funny thing is, Smogon, the supposed leading community in competitive battling, is filled with more immature rage quitters than PO or here.

          • You find that most of the people on smogon/smogon forums actually know very little about competitive battling.They are more trend followers. The moderators on Smogon however know their stuff. The have been playing competitively since RSE.

          • Hmm. But their writers for the Smog are terrible. At least the ones for that mega cool or mega drool article

          • Yeah I found the recent article quite dry actually. It’s probably because some of the veterans are retiring from smogon. I also find the quality of the posts nowadays to be quite poor.

          • Same reason as well! I never was a fan of either of the forums, so I joined PJ! I still visit the smogon forums, but the quality is so bad now.

          • I made an account, shared my opinion on little cup sets that i liked, was ridiculed, flipped out and never came back. Serebii forums was so horrible, i was infracted three times for going head to head with a mod. the people there are horrible, but Pj is so much better. i just wish everyone wasn’t in the blasted chat all the time
