Shinies. The elusive differently coloured Pokémon that were so rare that most people thought they were hoaxes/glitches/hacks. Yet, with the internet becoming more and more widespread, soon everyone knew about them. With a 1 in 8000 chance of finding them, they were truly sought after by collectors who had to put considerable effort into getting them.
With people complaining they couldn’t get one, Gamefreak threw a bone and released several shiny Pokémon as events, in addition to making some slight tweaks to the chance of finding shinies. Sorry folks that had a shiny Raikou, your’s became so common that people didn’t care about your achievement anymore. Luckily there were only a few event Pokémon, leaving a majority still hard to catch (even when using the Pokéradar).
But XY changed even more than that. They made so many tweaks that, as evidenced by the comments here and on other sites, you could easily find three shinies a day. The Safari zone with hundreds of Pokémon available, a new egg breeding mechanic, horde battles, the Pokéradar is back and maybe even a tweak to the base chance itself! This brings my to my concern of today: is there still a point in shinies?
The major thing about shinies was not that they were differently coloured. In fact, you could say that over half of all Pokémon looks worse or almost not different at all in their shiny form. No, the thing that made them cool was the rarity of finding one, the thrill of encountering and successfully catching it. It shouldn’t be only about its looks, but also on the memory that is attached to it. But with XY the rarity is gone. People will stop caring about your feat. “Oh, you got 30 shinies? I got 60, hmpf.” The whole elusive aspect went away, and that makes shinies not that exciting for me anymore as they once were.
But that’s just me of course. What do you think? I’d love to hear your opinion in the comments, and when I got the time I will try to respond to them. Seeing as this is a discussion post, keep spam to a bare minimum. If you got something interesting to say, say it, but don’t start 200 comments threads about one battle you had, use the chat.

Maybe it’s just the fact that I found two shines by horde encounter and SIX by consecutive fishing that makes me question whether there is really any purpose.

Maybe I am just so attached to the old-fashioned sprites of previous generations with the cheesy sparkle sound effect that I cannot get used to the new system. I don’t know, but the shiny system feels a bit less…elusive, wouldn’t you say?
The way shinies bling is my favorite in this gen. Makes my heart pump the way they do a little dimly colored pause before blinking/shining.
I think a Mega Starmie (Starmite?) should be either steel/water, water/steel, or psychic/steel or steel/ psychic.
I’d prefer it to remain Water/Psychic for good STAB coverage, but I think it should have a new ability.
I always mistook it for a steel type because of its color and design! Lol! It does need a new ability. The current ones just dont appeal.
Adaptability would be cool for it but I want something completely new. Maybe a new ability where Gem based moves increase in power by 50%. Power Gem, Dazzling Gleam, Flash Cannon (only cause its “flashy lol)

well the chances were 8192 in past gens, its 4000 something this gen.
I am still so very angry that they tampered with shinies so much. To quote myself,

its supposed to be 1/640+ chance but its still all luck based. It could be the 1st egg, the 9th egg, the 600th egg, just probability. It took me 6 eggs for shiny goomy and took 70 something eggs for bulbasaur.
im trying right now for shiny spritzee, i store all the eggs than hatch them 1 by 1. currently filled up half a box so far

Yup! I have horrible luck with shinies. The only other shiny I have is a Masuda Goldeen in W2.
I have had good shiny luck in the past. Random shiny Bibarel, possibly Drapion, Pidgey, Frillish, Pelipper, Gastly, and Golbat with only Pidgey, Frillish, and Golbat still around. Then I had one successful hunt in the past with Sawsbuck…and the eight successful hunts in Gen 6.
;-; i’m so unlucky. I do have a bunch of other shinies in W2 from trading (Riolu, Vulpix, Charmander, Minncino, etc) but I dont count those because they’re most likely hacked once I send them over 🙁

I’m expecting the next “Z style game to introduce the same move tutors that B2W2 did, and then I expect the RS remakes/sequels to re-introduce the Mega Punch/Mega Kick move tutors.
I hope Z come out with move tutors because we can’t use pokemon from 5th gen with move tutor moves as they won’t have the pentagon. Unless move tutor moves are breedable….I doubt it though.
