Are You Playing the Pokémon Trading Card Game?

A rarely mentioned topic on our site is the TCG-side of Pokémon, but I think it’s more than worth talking about occasionally. Pokémon recently announced details about the English release of the X&Y TCG expansion which will be coming on February 5, 2014. Fairy-type has been added to the cards, as well as a new Mega Pokémon mechanic.

Personally, I’ve always been more of a “collector” type when it comes to the Pokémon TCG. My three sisters never had any interest in battling when I was younger so even if I had made a competitive deck there wouldn’t have been any way for me to test it out. Luckily, children growing up in this online era have the Pokémon TCG Online game in case they have no interested siblings or nearby events. I don’t have much time for it, but I do really enjoy the TCGO game so if you haven’t checked it out I recommend that you do!

  2. I’m learning through the online trading card game. I think it can become too expensive for me if i was to become a competetive card game player for real. It’s fun, but the video games are better.

  8. I used to collect the cards simply because it was a another way to get OFFICIAL cool art of my favorite Pokemon, my brothers had a few friends we battled with. I tried the TCGO and couldn’t really get into it.

    On an unrelated note, I really don’t see Pokemon Z as happening, Ever since it was announced X and Y were based off ideas being represented by graph plots, and how Zygarde was a balance between Xerneas and Yveltal, I’ve been thinking the next game would be Pokemon 0 or Pokemon Origin.

  9. I’m taking a bunch of cool pictures of all the Pokemon cards and card mechandise that I’ve saved since I was 9 years old to 12 years old. I am now 22 and never gonna sell them lol. All in mint condition. I wanna pass them down to my kids whenever I have them.

    • or they could end up releasing Pokemon Z with RayquaZa as the green mascot instead of Zygorde lol and have it be an updated hoenn game with kalos pokemon in it as well. I’d be here for it lol.

      • Too bad Cloud Nine didn’t get the massive upgrade Sturdy got in Gen V. If it did, then Air Lock would be a threat for sure.

        • IMO since the guide did say “regions” which pretty much means Hoenn is a given, and one completely new region, I’ll say the possibilities will be:

          XZ, YZ
          or Pokemon Z

          and then either
          Pokemon Jade, or Emerald 2, or some kind of updated Hoenn game.

        • A/Z is another possibilty. A for Alpha and Z for Omega. Arceus would be the mascot for Alpha and Zygarde would be the mascot for Omega. Yes, Zygarde is the Order Pokémon, but for all we know, Zygarde and Arceus could be related. Zygarde is the snake of the underground afterall.

          Also, the Creation Trio’s signature items (Adamant Orb, Lustrous Orb, and Griseous Orb) are found in Zygarde’s room. Not only that, but we have Arceus’ plates scattered all over Kalos just like in D/P/Pt (BW and B2W2 had most of them in the Abyssal Ruins). Finally, the Shiny Creation Trio were the last event Pokémon distributed (in North America and Europe) for Generation V, so I see an Arceus event going on once Pokémon Bank is released.

          This A/Z Theory came from my brother he’s the one who should get the credit.

          • If there was an in-game event with the Shiny Creation Trio, they would have been distributed in Japan, which they weren’t.

          • I assumed Japan got them. I thought they get everything before everyone else (if we get it at all). If that’s the case, then why were they distributed in the first place?

      • I’m pretty sure the only reason we didn’t have pokemon grey was because of the negative connotations of grey. I mean there is literally no colour more boring. That being said they might want to cash in again on double sequels since there will always be those that find it necessary to buy both copies.

      • Anything is possible. At this point anything is possible. We just don’t know what GF will do. I’m thinking either Hoenn remakes or gen seven will be soon. If gen seven, I suspect it will be similar to gen 2 in having the capabilty to travel to the previous region.

      Feel free to down vote whenever. However I’m pretty sure when BW2 were announced you were pretty sure that a “gray version” was the next big thing. W comes before X and Y, as Z comes after. So, W could be a prequel. Aside from that it was a joke. But at least I know you read my comment! Thanks for the acknowledgment!

  11. When the TCG online first began, I played like crazy. My parents never liked the idea of buying trading cards when I was a kid, but when I saw this…
    After they updated the game so that you had to download it, I couldn’t be bothered to start the 3 leagues all over again. Now I am more of a collector. Just opening free booster packs.

  12. I will probably start playing the online trading card again soon since I already have a nice deck built in that game and won a few matches with it lol. But I prefer to just dishing out my old cards and having my little brother build his own deck with them and battling with me physically. I took a bunch of pictures of a bunch of trading card merchandise that I’ve owned for over 10 years now. Sorry if the pictures make the page load slow lol, just don’t refresh. click the links.

    this first pic is of my 3 binders/books of cards that i’ve managed to hold all these years. the blue book is the thickest – and stores all of my common/uncommon cards. The middle book was a special southern islands set i had got for christmas when I was about 9 or 10. The little red thick book has all my rarities and promos. And the bottom pick is a of a bunch of packs opened that I had saved lol.

    The second picture is the inside of my trading card league booklet that I used to attend physically at Toys R Us every saturday morning after Pokemon aired on TV (good times). The top left pic is of some photo cards that came in the southern island set.

  17. Now that I think about it, the last pack of cards that I bought in Disney world had a beautiful Altaria card, but it had a typing emblem I had never seen before. I think it was dragon.

  20. I’ve always loved collecting Pokemon Cards as a child but what really set my Pokemon Card collection was the start of the Gen 5 cards

    I bought a single booster pack for fun but what I found was a holographic Zekrom (the big black one) and I was enthralled with the feeling of finding rare cards at random and
    soon I’ve spent over 70 bucks on booster packs

    and now I’m a mere few cards away from completing the Unova Pokedex including different forms

  21. ..Wow, that’s so creepy and weird. I’m IV breeding right now and put a charmeleon and charmander in the daycare and go outside and there’s already an egg ready o-e creepiest part is… the charmeleon is the charmander’s dad D: ; [SO SORRY MORALS]

  25. I have perfect (Hp, Defense, Sp. Stats, and Speed IVs) Phantumps if any one wants one. Some have perfect IVs, they’re just different combinations of the five mentioned.
