Starters: Evolved Secondary Types hinted at

pokemonxystarters4
Back in the fourth generation, Mr. Masuda who directs the Pokémon games once expressed interest in giving the secondary types of ‘Dark’, ‘Psychic’, and ‘Fighting’ to the starter Pokémon  in their later evolutions in order to balance out the traditional weaknesses. The recent trailer for the Sixth generation strongly suggests that they will finally implement this idea.
In the trailer we see a pattern in the attacks of the starter Pokémon. Each one first uses an attack of the type they represent, followed by a secondary type.

xygrassdarkatk

As you can see, the first attack is almost certainly Solarbeam, an attack that is representational of grass types. Followed by a Purple slashing/scratching attack, which looks quite likely to be a dark type attack like Nightslash. This alone is not enough to prove it is a dark attack, but let’s take a look at the other Pokémon attacks.

xyfirepsychicatk

Here Fennekin is shown using what looks like flamethrower, again, an attack that is representational of fire types. It’s next move however, shows it attack a Kirlia with what is almost certainly a psychic type attack.

xywaterfightingatk

Now we must turn our attention to Froakie. After an attack that is possible Water Gun, it goes on to use what appears to be a fighting move. It’s hard to tell from a still image, but the moving scene in the trailer suggests this. Whats more, its pose when it is first brought out looks very aggressive and combative, traits of a Pokémon that will have fighting moves, and eventually evolve to gain a secondary fighting type.

Though it is important to bear in mind that this is all just speculation. Take a look at the evidence and decide for yourselves.
Masuda hints a relation between “Bonds” and an “innovative new battle mechanic”

images
Something I found quite interesting was the lack of people picking up on a statement that game director Mr.Masuda had made shortly after the announcement.

「プレイヤーとポケモンの絆が深くなることで、さらにポケモンが強くなる新しいバトルの仕組み。
誰もが楽しめるシナリオと音楽」
“A new battle mechanism in which Pokémon become stronger by having their bonds deepened with the player”.

A generic statement about trainers and their bonds with Pokémon? Perhaps. But somehow I doubt it. Mr.Masuda specifically refers to it as “A new battle mechanism”. Exactly what it is, and what effect it will have on raising and training of Pokémon from here on is yet to be known, but it seems to be a big enough of a deal to be mentioned in both the English and Japanese trailers.
English trailer: “The more you battle together, the stronger your bond will become”.
Japanese trailer: “As [your Pokémon] fight, [your] bonds [with them] become stronger.”
Location: Paris

Screen Shot 2013-01-11 at 00.12.47
As well as the flash of a structure that is unmistakably based on the Eiffel Tower at the beginning of the trailer, there are multiple factors that suggest that the sixth generation region is based on Paris.
A few months ago Mr.Masuda regularly updated about his trip to Paris. And from a couple of weeks ago his twitter avatar features a picture he took of himself with the Eiffel tower behind him.

Since we are still at a very early stage it is difficult to entirely rule out that the region will not be based on Paris alone. Perhaps France in general, or even all of Europe. Though there is not yet enough evidence to support this.
Legendaries: Origin

Pokemon-X-Y
There is increasing evidence to suggest that the legendary Pokémon are based on Norse Mythology.
Yggdrasil, also known as “the World Tree” is a giant mythical Ash Tree in which various gods are said to gather.
Three creatures that inhabit the tree are an Eagle, a Stag, and a Dragon.

Yveltal seems to be based on either Vedfolnir or Hraesvelgr. Especially the latter which has “vel” it its name. It is said to be a giant that takes the form of an Eagle. It is a “corpse swaller” and waits at the end of the world. It represents death which is in juxtaposition to what I believe Xerneas is based on.

Xerneas seems to be based on Eikbyrnir. The Japanese Wikipedia says that it creates springs by dripping water from its antlers, and that it represents life. Anybody who has seen Princess Mononoke will be familiar with this concept.

If the creatures that live in Yggdrasil are anything to go by, the third legendary may well be a dragon.
Significance of X and Y

 2400b4e4
X and Y possibly represent two things. XY and XX are male and female chromosomes respectively. The Japanese logo shows the helix symbol which suggests chromosomes and DNA will play a role in the theme for this generation. In addition to this, X,Y and Z are co-ordinates in making 3D images. Coinciding with the fact that this will be Pokémon’s very first main game that is in 3D.

Tidbits and Fun Predictions (post below and we may add it!)

180px-133Eevee
-Roller-skates. We can see the main character using roller-skates in distinctly Parisian areas. What is the significance of this? Is it to replace running shoes? Or even the Bicycle?

-If the Legendaries are based on creatures from Yggdrasil, said to be a giant Ash tree, could it be that the professor’s name will reflect this? What are the chances of トネリコ博士?  (professor Toneriko, Japanese word for Ash Tree). Though in the unlikely event that this prediction comes true, Professor Ash does not look likely to stay in an English language localization for obvious reasons. Other sources indicate that Yggdrasil is a yew tree (as opposed to an ash), could the professor be called Professor Yew? The yew is also a quite common tree in Europe. But that’s just my take on it. ~dae

-What is the significance of the mirror? Is it merely to show the character at the beginning of the game or will there be some customisation?

– New Eevee evolution? The anime, cardgame, movie, recent products and even official Japanese website have been pushing the whole ‘Eevee factor’ recently. Could this be interpreted as a possible a new Eevee evolution? Even the English Language Pokémon Official Twitter page mentioned the Eevee family recently!
1. If it is Norse mythology, why would the game be based in France, wouldn’t it be better to base the game off where Norse mythology was made. I don’t know where that is ._.

    • The Japanese for Norse Mythology is “North European Mythology”. Europe is Europe, I think thats enough for them. It’s enough for me too. (I’m from Europe myself).

    • Norse is another way to write Northman (perhaps it’s middle- or old English?) so the culture are nordic peoples. Most often, this is considered to be people from Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, and Sweden), but included Iceland (a former colony of Scandinavia) and also parts of Germany. Keep in mind, before modern times, people moved, kingdom boundaries moved. Norse settled parts of Scotland and eastern England, even NW France (Normandy is a French word for place of Norsemen) as well as Northern Europe. I have always wondered if Norse was an outlook/religion of the greater Germanic tribes that ‘invaded’ Europe in the centuries before the Roman Empire collapsed. Germanic tribes such as the Franks, vandals, Visigoths etc. settled Spain, France and the rest of Europe, pushing aside the Celts.

With that being said, Nordic civilization where once settled in France so it’s possible.

  2. On the idea that y-legendary represents death is that its wings and tail all look like claws. The way y-legendary is drawn also looks like those claws are closing. It’s like the grip of death.
Also x-legendary might not represent life itself, but possibly birth as birth is more opposite to death than life is. The way its depicted its looking up towards the sun or whatever which to me seems like a birth.
And if y is death and x is birth, that allows z to represent life. x=beginning z=middle y=end
While Im on my tangent, maybe y-legendary is not flying at all, maybe dark/ghost and x-legendary water something. No evidence, just intuition.

    • One more thing, while looking up the four stags of Yggdrasil on wikipedia, it says that they may represent seasons (Sawsbuck) or winds. Maybe the pokemon creators stumbled upon them while creating Gen V and liked them so much that theyre using them twice, so maybe x-legendary is part flying (winds)? Also the dragon mentioned with the death eagle and the four stags eats at the roots of the Yggdrasil tree. Possibly we’ll finally have a grass/dragon legendary?

  3. Wonder if it’s possible to find shiny pokemon in 6th gen :3…and also wonder if it’s rngable (i dont rng)…or wonder if they probably put shiny checks on the legends again like they did to reshiram and zekrom (wonder why gamefreak put shiny checks on them O_O)…

    Reply
    • I think they made resh/zek and victini have a shiny check so they could distribute it later, “hold on to it” per say, but no signs of that yet…

as to rng, people will find a way. The japanese are eager for it. For example Monster Hunter TriG, a 3DS game, has already compiled a complete table with the amulets found in the game(in short, these amulets have different numbers attached to them for special powers). The table can show you where you are and how far ahead you are from the amulet you want. This was done all by hand, data sent in from a bunch of players.

To the Monster Hunter community, rng abusing is only half of what it is compared to pokemon. No one could imagine what people would do for it in pokemon.

  4. I’m not sure if anyone noticed this, but the guy who won the conference in the Anime also has a full Eevee Team. Like, whoa!

    Reply
    • We speculated he may had to battle against Ash where he uses his dragon-type eevee to defeat him.
But the whole episode was a troll and one of the worst in recent history of the Pokémon anime.

  5. I doubt they’d go this cliche fakemon psy/fight/dark way xD

Anyhow, notice how the supposed “night slash” makes a neutral hit sound instead of SE.
y guess then is that its either poison or a steel attack..

Btw, I believe that the antlers represent the DNA bases A C T G.

    • To be fair though, you can hardly say the water attack used on Pansear sounds like a super effective sound. I’m not sure the sounds are anything to go by here. That and the whole dark/psy/fight fakemons were all based on the fact that Masuda had said this was something he had experimented with in the past. They’re lies built on truth.

  6. I think the DNA theorie is more likely. You can even see something like a DNA strand on the Coro Coro leaks (look at the titles). 🙂
The norse mythology theory is also viable in my opinion, but I somehow doubt it.

  7. Hearing that the legendaries could be based off Norse Mythology (meaning the games are European not just French) is Very exciting. It’s also interesting Norse is North Germanic and the three staters seem Heavily influenced by Grimm’s Fairy Tales (The Brothers Grimm being German themselves. Froakie seems to be based off the “Frog Prince/King” (Froaking sounds awesome). Chespin based on ‘Hans the Hedgehog’ and Fennekin off the various mischievous Fox stories by the Grimm’s. Having Pokemon themed after the many stories, legends, mythologies, and ancient/medieval history from Europe could be amazing!
