List of English B/W Names (UPD2)

Thanks Missingno. Master for writing this up based on the list we leaked yesterday.  Obviously IGN confirmed these and the upcoming issue of Nintendo Power will as well.  Can’t believe the full list leaked this early.  Sorry that I pulled it while I wasn’t sure. [Please note that I am treating this list as unconfirmed rumor at this point]

UPD: Bell’s official English name is Bianca, and Cheren will keep his name!

UPD2: Added in explanations for fun :3  Feel free to suggest better ones.  For the most part I think I did pretty well and YES I did the original list myself. [Been updating list with comment ideas as I see fit]

<3 pokejungle

ps- Let the complaining in the comments officially START!  Allow me to be the first to say there are some terrible names.  I mean terrible.

1. Personally I love the names, though, its going to take me a long while to remember them all!
The only english name I have a problem with is “Tepig” they should have kept pokabu. It could have worked for english : ( Plus it was a cute name.
Little Bacon is still my favorite of the 5th gen pokemon though.

2. Tbh, I kinda like the majority of the names.
Some are little difficult for my tongue, but I’m sure I’ll manage.
I really like Axew and Haxorus. >:D

1. I agree. the names are harder to pronounce than normal, but i think that’s the fun part of this region.
(because since this is based off of america, the names are to be integrated)

1. Axew = <3
Not as good as Kibago, but still epic. At least it didn't get stuck with Tuskid like some people predicted X_X

3. I love all of them- some of them are just hilarious though and I love PUSA for their sense of humor with a few of them.

4. A lot of them are actually pretty good. Even if they aren’t. I really don’t see why people should make a big deal over the names anyway. Even if they were bad, so what, it’s not like it really affects anything serious.

1. I agree. People should’nt make a big fuss about it because you can nickname them. (remember?) :p

5. I had to clean install windows 7 and as such forgot my AIM password and username. Would you mind signing on MSN if at all possible?

6. I think they’re pretty good names. Sure, it’ll take some time getting used to them, but that would’ve been the case no matter what the new names were.

PJ, I think you’re just mad because when you first posted the rumoured list, you said that the names were probably 99.999999999% false (you even edited that part out of the post! 😛 )

1. No I’m not mad xD When I pulled the list I deleted that line because it was a hint that they weren’t fake.

Would I ever regret treating a rumor as a rumor? No :p

7. Squeeee!!! I’m so happy they kept Darumaka! Only one that kinda stood out as lame to me was Eelektrik…and why did they use so many k’s in the Electric Pokemon names?

8. well at least i got pignite right XD and i am not going to complain about the names because i will nickname my pokes anyway 😛

9. Yeh they’re alright 😀 Although I have to admit I felt stupid spending ages trying to work out what half of the names were referencing. A had a small (but sad) victory when I worked out Krook-odile 🙂 Some of them sound like past pokes….e.g. serperior/rhyperior, cofagrigus/mismagius but they work well in their own rite.
Weirdest ones: Oobemu/Beheeyem, Mamanbou/Alomomola (struggling not to say lol in between).

10. Great, my favorite Psychic type is now Reuniculus, ugh.
Well I got my Darumaka I should be thankful.

11. Let me be the next to complain, pj ;P

Why do some of these names outright sound stupid? Most of them are…okay, I guess, but some of these names don’t live up to PUSA’s standards when they reveal the English names…but probably three years from now, these will all sound normal, eh?

But screw this, I’m still calling them by Japanese names since I’m used to it ._.

1. I hate Throh and Sawk. They’re just so… stupid.Sawk makes it sound like Dageki is a sock or something too.

1. makes me wonder who the name makers are.
i would fire them, repossess all of their things, sell them, and then leave the makers on the street begging for money while trying to keep hold of their pants from falling down like zurrurug (the Blasian (black and asian) pokemon)

12. I actually like a lot of these! My only qualm is that I wanted Jaroda/Jalorda to be translated as Gardolord or Garlord – like Garden and Lord. Serperior is cool too I guess. XD At least Emboar isn’t a surprise and Samurott sounds kinda cool (though I still refer to its previous evolution as Tidekwon and will be naming my Oshawott that when I get one XD)

Volcarona is really cool though, and I LOVE the Sazandora line’s German-influenced names!! dEINo, ZWEIlous hyDREIgon. Deino sounds like Dino, Zweilous.. doesn’t really sound like anything but Hydreigon sounds like Hydra and Dragon mixed. I love these names <3

13. Thank god lol, IGN is in NO WAY a reliable source. The only real evidence i saw for them being real was that you had apparently got a cease and desist or something =D

1. IGN is a corporate website. It doesn’t just report news like my site, Serebii, or any other pokemon fansite. If IGN reveals details it is because Nintendo gave them the details to reveal.

14. Seriously!!! What’s wrong with you people??? These are probably the worst Pokémon names in history!
I can’t believe that PUSA has such dumb people working in there. They shouldn’t be allowed to work in important things like Pokémon names… Epic Fail american Gen 5

1. You don’t mean that. Not for all of them.

Because deep down in your heart, you know that Roggenrola, Purrloin, and Liepard are the three best names in the history of Pokemon.

2. Boo hoo. Since when have Pokemon names been the most important factor?

I’m sorry, but frankly, complaining about the Pokemon names is up there with when people complained about the grass in HGSS. I understand that many of them sound bad, but why is it that big of a deal?

1. Are you fuckin’ kidding? Since when names aren’t important? The name is what you gonna call that creature from now on. Yeah, it’s a big of a deal, at least for me, it is. I don’t wanna sound stupid when saying things like “Patrat” or “Cofagrigus”. Imagine if your name was “Unfezant”… What the hell of name is that???

15. Sawk makes me think of “Squawk” XS

I’m not as against the names as I was when I first saw them….even though many are very long. Reuniculus seems a bit awkwar to pronounce….I still love him though. :p

Also Makomi is now Fennel, really cool name! 😀

16. Heh, you’re welcome.

Also, I got Maractus and Klang right! WOOHOO!

And Musharna and Swanna, if you want to count the obvious stuff.

1. “Klang.”
ZOMG!!! I SAID IT RIGHT!!!!
oh, you meant the name-guessing?but, i’m surprised that didn’t name that line Klikn, Klank, and Klunk.
but, I gues Klinglang is good, too. (but i like klunk better…)

17. I like some names, but Sewaddle doesn’t seem like it fits Kurumiru. It seems more like it should have been koahoruie’s name…

18. These names are atrocious. Anyways, I think there’s a mistake…the vulture Pokémon, 630…Mandibuzz? That’s got to be a Bug-Type for sure.

19. They’re not so bad now that I understand some of them.

Ones I guessed:
Eelectrik
Chandelure
Scrafty (well sort of. I guessed Scruffian)

20. Love Gothita!!!! It sounds just like “little drop” in Spanish!! (gotita)
I looks like a lot of these names are almost unpronounceable for a native Spanish speaker! It will be fun to watch the spanish dub XD

1. It’s funny you say spanish because I believe her name is Goth and Bonita. But isnt Ponyta a play on bonita already? I might be wrong.

1. I think it’s more like goth+ lolita
but I might be wrong too!

And yes, ponyta has always been “bonita” for me since I am from El Salvador XD

Anxious to nickname my Gothita “Little Drop”

2. Well in spanish we usually use -ita and -ito as a diminutive for stuff. So Gothita is like saying little goth, also mixed in there lolita, like goth lolita which is what the line is partially based on.

21. Purrloin makes me think of tenderloin XD

I kind of like Scraggy….. but…. ah…. some of the other names are trainwrecks…

22. Lurking and loving.

I’m really happy to see that I’m not the only one that thinks these names are great. I really like Klink’s line (so fun!), but I’m kind of sad that Zuruzukin doesn’t get to stay at the bottom of the list. Oh, well, I guess I can allow Zweilous to do that, too.

Haha, I barely even know all the Japanese names! This will take some getting used to!

23. …..God….. what a lot of shitty names….. some are good but…. are in the shade of the ones that are pure shit……

know what? the owrst part is that someone has been payed for that names….

At least zebstrika sounds cool…..

1. Gloom Golem Electrode Jynx Ditto Psyduck Geodude Slowpoke Slowbro Farfetch’d Seel Muk Onix Hitmonlee Hitmonchan Hitmontop Chansey Mr. Mime Sudowoodo Smoochum Treecko Mudkip Wingull Nosepass Lunatone Solrock Baltoy Gorebyss Bidoof Buneary Lopunny Glameow Stunky Spiritomb Munchlax Abomasnow Lickilicky

^Some one got paid for all of those too. You mad?

1. I don’t see nothing wrong with those names… maybe Bidoof sounds a bit stupid and Buneary and Lopunny a bit akward but other than that, the names you listed sound perfectly fine to me… For me, It’s not about what they are based on, it’s about how they sound…

1. i think that the names sound good because you got used to them. that’s like when the sinnoh pokemon came out. you thought they were stupid. but, as time flew, the leaves fell to the floor as the mad-cow disease broke loose, thus creating devestatting effects on the world, causing all wom–pokemon to go extinct beca–
OBJECTION!!!
-Phoenix Wright

2. Yeah, sure im mad,all the trollfaces in the world cant even try to troll me about this, they have plenety of time to get good names, even most of the japanese names are more readable XD

I know that just ill get used to them, like everyone else, though. But the most part of names are awfoul.

Swoobat, try to say that without making it sounds like zubat…. Volcarona just sound stupid, sawsbuck, there goes all the coolnes of mebukijika, KLINKLANG, COMEON! gigigear was bad but… KLINKLANG?! XD and why the figthing line of ropushin have all the names finished with the suffix durr? That they dont even know a little of the popular culture on internet?

(note apart: the half of the names you mentioned, are good names to me, aparently where not going to agree on this XD)

24. I KNEW Unfezant was a based on pheasant !! Woo! So seen as pheasants don’t fly to much…i wonder if this will effect how it’s portrayed if Ash is to ever get one, as more of a walking bird!

25. Aianto ALWAYS reminds me of Kevin Durant that plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder. 🙂 GOOOOO MAGIC!! 🙂

26. I love how some of the names are so bad that we can’t possibly nickname them at all
/Sarcasm

Let’s see, what was that cool, psychic-fighting guy with a horn on his chest and back and sword arms?
Gal. Laid.
Ed Zachary my point

27. I think the reason everyone ends up hating the names is that if you don’t know Japanese, their Japanese names don’t sound like puns or just combinations of words, so they sound like their actual NAME, but with the English names, they just sound stupid because they’re mostly lame puns and awkward sounding words.

I don’t think that makes as much sense as it did in my head. 😛

1. I forgot to add that most of the names are for the most part okay, except for the Pokemon I like and want on my team. xD Conkledurr? WHAT? XD Seriously, if any Pokemon should have durr in its name, it’s Maggyo/Stunfisk.

28. Sawsbuck is AWESOME!!

S=Summer
A=Autumn
W=Winter
S=Spring
Buck=A male deer

Awesome, creative name.

1. thanks for pointing that out because tbh i couldnt figure out what words it used xD now that i know what it means i must say i love it

29. Someone really needs to photoshop Durant (Aianto) onto a Duran Duran album. Durant Durant. xD

30. Yeah, these names are amongst my favorite in all of Pokemon, but you really have to enjoy/see the puns to get to appreciate them. Galvantula is the most obscure pun ever though (tried to think what gal- word would make sense, so I checked dictionary.com, where it presented Luigi Galvani, an important physicist that proved that electricity can come from chemical reactions).

I just absolutely adore Braviary, Gurdurr (Gurdurr is holding a girder), Tynamo, and Tirtouga. Definitely the best puns Pokemon has to offer.

1. orrr galvanize, which means to run an electric current through. this is one of my favorite puns out of all of them!

31. The names were sort of strange at first, but I’ve already grown to like them. Except for that handful of horribly named Pokemon( I can’t believe they actually went with Eelektrik…) However, the coolest name by far is definately Elgyem, which is the word form of LGM, which stands for Little Green Man. Ingenious. His evolution, however, I don’t get.

32. Axew
Fraxure
Haxorus

This is amazing.

I don’t like Krookodile. Waruvial/Warubiaru is just an awesome name I got attached to 🙁

33. The names will eventually grown to the acception of the fans or you can be one of those . Samurott L. Jackson Emboar nice.
Litwick sounds funny reminds me of airwick candles. Serperior awsome. Panpour and Simipour would have sound better as Pansoak and Simisoak, rolls right off the tounge Oh well. I guess I can give them those nicknames.

1. Bro, in the 6th generation, the region has to be based off of south america. Make one of the rivals Colombian!!!

1. Blanca is the spanish version of Bianca (which is an Italian name).

And lol on not knowing that, since ur hispanic XD

1. Im not saying that no one is right. haha im just saying that you see a lot more hispanic people with the name of Bianca than you do Italian. lol and yah… i am very white for a hispanic.

2. There’s a character in an english soap called Bianca, and she’s not hispanic. I’ve heard of some celeb Bianca’s who aren’t Hispanic too.

Hispanics don’t own the copyright to Bianca or something. :p

34. i was reading through this list last night and decided i really like a lot of the names. so im pretty satisfied xD

35. Im liking the names now 😀 Butttt what i really would to see is the pokemon rap like in season1 but using these name lol all i say is Good luck!!

36. I decided I’mma make a list of all the ones I love.

UNFEZANT – because it just sounds cool. and z is an awesome letter to throw in randomly.
ROGGENROLA – hahahaha!
WOOBAt and SWOOBAT – i like the woo and swoon references to love/the heart nose.
EXCADRILL – because x is a quality letter
(side note, conkeldurr reminds me of the metallic taste you get when you hit your head hard on the ground D:)
PALPITOAD – because palpitate is a sexy word. i also like the earthquake references in this line, but can’t figure out tympole…
THROH – i think this name looks cool. sawk not so much though…
VENIPEDE and SCOLIPEDE – just great in general
WHIMSICOTT – this name is so fluffy.
LILLIGANT – hate the pokemon but love the name
(side note, krookodile is disappoint D:)
MARACTUS – so crunchy!
SIGILPYH – possibly the coolest and most-fun-to-say pokemon name ever! sigil + glyph = awesome
COFAGRIGUS – mucho creativo
CARRACOSTA – reminds me of turtles hatching in costa rica <3
SOLOSIS, DUOSION, REUNICLUS – love how its all alone and split up 🙁 (solo + mitosis) then becomes two and together (duo + fusion) then is a together being (reunite + homonculus)
VANILLUXE – i would eat it.
SAWSBUCK – as (i forgot your name sorry D:) pointed out, summer-autumn-winter-spring is supa cool
EMOLGA – don't know what it means but i like 🙂
ESCAVALIER – perfect!
FOONGUS and AMOONGUSS – INCUBUS!!! and they're just funny names anyway
ALOMOMOLA – alohomora? lots of m's is silly and makes me smile.
GALVANTULA – soooo cool! galvanize + tarantula is sexy. plus it's fun to say.
FERROSEED and FERROTHORN – reference to ferrum = cool
ELGYEM and BEHEEYEM – whoever pointed out the LGM and BEM, i salute you
LITWICK – professor flitwick? chandelure is pretty cool too i spose
FRAXURE = axe + fracture (i think) = cool
CUBCHOO – lil' sneeze-bear <3
CRYOGONAL – fits it perfectly! such an angular name
STUNFISH – reminds me of fruit snacks? i dunno why
PAWNIARD and BISHARP – chessss. i hate chess but these names are luscious
MANDIBUZZ – mandible + buzzard? it sounds good
VOLCARONA – again, it fits the pokemon perfectly
(side note, i don't like any of the legendaries' names D: except zekrom)

Ok I'm done. I think this post is long enough maybe?

37. I like how Alomomola is just like Girafarig; both of them are palindromes. but i still don’t get what that name is supposed to be a pun of.

38. i dont think ppl hate the names cuz lemme say i like a lot of them Axew not as good as Kibago but u can make some funnies with it like when ur battling u could say something like TAKE MY AXE IN UR SHOE since Axew sounds like Axe and Shoe, and i think ppl r just complaining about how hard some of these r for pronouncing, i just hope Ash’s new VA is a dude and will be able to pronounce these without sounding like a little shit

39. Well, I like the creativeness of the name Sawsbuck, but I will forever like my name for it better…Caribloom…

1. Except “bloom” really only applies to spring when flowers and plants start to blossom, which is only one of four forms of the pokemon. It sounds cool, but it wouldn’t work for a seasonal pokemon which shares other characteristics in it’s other forms.

1. Thanks Captain Downer. And just so you know, flowers aren’t the only thing that can bloom. I was thinking of it more like growth, not literally blooming.

40. after seeing all of your explanations for a few of the names has helped me accept more of them, but for the most part, i give them a thumbs down. sure, lickylicky, smoochum, bidoof, and mr. mime are terrible, but seriously, some of these just seem awkward to say or even write. would anyone be willing to keep a list of the name origin ideas you all get? maybe in the forums or a new page or something? bulbapedia is very slow to update and navigate for one minor thing like that.

41. Foongus Amoongus… These bad boys are both going on my team, no matter what. NO. MATTER. WHAT. I am actually quite content with these names, and some of them seem to be a throwback to first-gen beta version simplicity.

42. Yay Cheren keeps his name! I was really hoping that would happen. Don’t mind Bel changing her name really, Bianca is nice. 🙂

43. also, would anyone be interested in making a pokédex app for chrome? even though i don’t have them, it’d also be cool for tablets and smartphones.
i can sure as hell tell you i’d be interested in using it. lol

44. I. for one, love these names. Absolutely awesome and creative. Then again, I’m not the kind of person to sit there and hate on names. CONFAGRIGUS!!! Gosh, it fun to say out loud.

Let me Throh off my clothes and show the world my Vanillite.

45. If these are indeed the true names, it’s just like every region to me. There are some gems in there, like Litwick and it’s evolutions, and some clunkers too like Throh and Sawk. I really like Tympole, Palpitoad and Seimitoad too!

1. I swear I’m not doing this for comment count, but I just read some of them are different from the rumored ones, so…. I feel stupid because I actually like a lot of them…

46. most people hate the names… but i love them… you just getting used to them… or something. what ever.
I LIKE THEM 🙂

47. Amoonguss, while your description makes sense, is most likely a corruption of ‘among us’.
Foongus > Amoonguss
From the phrase ‘there’s a fungus among us’, which means nothing, but hints at Foongus and Amoonguss’ Pokeball-style caps.

646 Kyurem Kyurem – Kept Japanese name

1. Beheeyem is based on B.E.M. which is bug-eyed monster.
Lampent is most likely based on lamp and repent or pent ( as in pent-up, repressed or caged-in, referring to the souls that it steals)
Otherwise, the other interpretations are what I came up with as well. I love this generation’s names!

49. Pretty sure Lillipup comes from Lilliputian, based on the island of Lilliput (which was inhabited by tiny people) in the book Gulliver’s Travels. ‘Lilliputian’ generally means ‘small’, hence ‘Lillipup’. 🙂

1. It’s a play on the word. The “Pup” is a dog, the “Lilli-” (as in Lilliputian) is tiny. Tiny dog. 🙂

1. That was my first thought too, but I thought naming a dog after lilliputians seemed a stretch.

50. Watchog Miruhoggu – Watch + groundhog
621 Druddigon Kurimugan – Dragon + ruddy
563 Cofagrigus Desukan – Coffin + Sarcophagus + Egregious

565 Carracosta Abagoora – carpace + coast
590 Foongus Tamagetake – fool + fungus
562 Yamask Desumasu – Yami (dark) + Mask

51. Everyone is crazy, these names are amazing. D: I like these more than I like DPPt’s names. They suckkkeeed. Then again I hate everything from Sinnoh.

52. 526 Gigalith = Megalith*10^3
552 Krokorok – Theres no relation to rocks, so it’s simply crocodile based
590 Fungus Amungus is a music album with a mushroom on the cover xD
594 Alomomola – sunfish also called mola mola + mom
597 Ferroseed – Ferrum is Iron
605 Elgyem – LGM, little green men
606 Beheeyem – BEM, bug-eyed-monster
624 Pawniard – Pawn as in chess figure…not pwn Dx
629 Vullaby – Vulture, lullaby

53. I think Larvesta comes from larva and Vesta, a Greek goddess of fire.

Also, I would like to repeat that I am happy to see people are being mature over names… not.

54. Remember the fart on Maggyo’s cry?

I suposse it’s new name (Stunfisk) is based on the fact the he stinks: Stunk + fish.
Similarly Skunstank = Skunk + stank.

1. How about… Stun? As in electricity? Stun + fish + disk (it’s flat).

Lillipup is Lilliput + Pup. How is that a stretch?
Elgyem and Beheeyem are phonetic readings of LGM and BEM.
Boldore is Boulder + ore.
Pawniard is Pawn + poniard, which is a kind of dagger.

55. When I saw “Purrloin” the first thing I thought of was steak, mmm….
Also, “Axew” is a play on “askew”. I love how everyone is jumping on “haxor”, I really doubt that was intentional.

Anyway, where did the full list come from? And how likely is it they are definitely the real names? I have to say, the more I read them the better they sound, even Liepard sounds OK when you get used to it.

56. There are some good ones, some meh ones and some downright awfull ones.
But one that could be better would be Doredia’s name Lilligant.
If it’s lily + elegant, wouldn’t Elelily or Lilyele be better?

And Urugamoth’s name, Volcarona. I get the corona part but what do volcano’s have to do with him?
And nice work ruining a naming scheme with Gear, I mean wouldn’t Klink, Klank, Klunk be better?

1. Because it was the substitute of Sun when volcanic ashes covered the world and Larvesta lives in volcanoes.

1. I considered the volcanic ashes, but those don’t really give a reason for “volcano” to be part of it’s name. But that Larvesta part makes sense, thanks for clearing that up.

1. It is “Volcarona” because “Substituteofthesun-corona” didn’t fit in the name spaces. 😛

57. I love the names of my team so much…

Samurott is just epic. Love it so much.
Swoobat is better than what I came up with, could still be better but it’s nickname will make it awesome…
Excadrill reminds be of Excalibur (especially considering Drillbur) which is totally awesome in every way.
Darmantian we already knew but I still LOVE it.
Scrafty is simply genius and I love it.
The only one I’m not a particular fan of is Galvantula. They could have used Voltula or Joltula… But I’m going to use Zekky (Zekrom) post E4 anyway…

Other names I love much:
Klink’s line. I just love the simplicity and slightly childish names they have. I crack up every time I say/think Kliklang. In a positive way.
Foongus and Amoongus are brilliant.
Timburr’s line is also awesome.
Sawsbuck is frankly pure genius.

I only don’t really like the boring ones like Deerling, Ducklett and all of those names. So dull. Plus Thro and Sawk…

Final note: we get Pignite for SOMETHING!

58. So… I’m ppretty sure I wasn’t the only person who went for ”the Youtube names hunt” :3 I got Purrloin! Now I just hope this list is real.

59. Can only think of what “Conkeldurr (sp?)” is composed of? I thought the “Conkel” = Concrete but I can’t for the life of think of what the “durr” part translates too. Is it murder? As in “Concrete Murder” since he’s evil, freakish clown that I want on my team the minute I get White?

60. Oh I also want to add:

Blitzle: Blitz in German means lightning. Might also come from the word Blitzkrieg which means Lightning War.

Gothorita: Gothic + Senorita?

Gothitelle: According to Bulbpedia, the name may be derived from “Gothic” + “Mademoiselle” which is french for lady. Which makes more sense to me since the family names seem to be a combination of Gothic + a exotic word that refers to a girl.

Karrablast: The “Karra” part might be a corruption of “Karate” but Carapace works too.

61. Conkeldurr probably just comes from ‘concrete’ and ‘elder’ as it’s the highest in it’s evolutionary chain : )

1. The “cino” in Minccino and Cinccino is quite possibly derived from “cino cloth”, which is what I believe is made of chinchilla fur. Or, it could always be cappuccino. 😛

63. If you pronounce these, you get a common abbreviation for what kind of alien these represent

Elgyem-LGM little green men
Beeheeyem- BEM bug eyed monster

64. So…corona means crown… Are volcarona’s wings supposed to be a crown?
Also since Tabunne is a pun on something like “maybe”, could Audino be a play on audio AND the phrase “I don’t know?” To keep the joke I mean.

1. Corona refers to the sun’s outline, like what you can see when you’re viewing a solar eclipse, which is referencing Volcarona’s ability to act as a “second sun” when volcanic ashes block out the sun.

And yes, it’s totally possible (:

65. Some off the wall guesses at name origins, the only one of which I’m sure of is Pawniard’s:

Blitzle = Bristle (its hairs are rather… bristly) + Blitz?
Yamask = Yami + Mask?
Reuniclus = reunion + homunculus (which is some composite human?)
Pawniard = Poignard (French for dagger) + Pawn

66. 520 Tranquill Hatoopoo – Tranquil + Quill (pen made from feather)

Quail maybe?

553 Krookodile Warubiaru – Nixon

You are awesome.

579 Reuniclus Rankurusu – Reunion + Nucleous

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homunculus

597 Ferroseed Tesshiido – Ferromagnet + Seed

Ferros is another name for Iron.

628 Braviary Wargle – Brave + Aviation

Aviary is a place where birds are kept in zoos.

67. Lillipup and Lillagant are too similar….even though I really like the second name.

Lillipup would be nicer called “Litapup” (Litter+pup) like a litter of pups.

68. eh… there’s good ones and bad ones I guess.
I think Haxorus is a pretty awesome name tbh. I also like the whole Solosis, Duosin thing.
But there’s some downright stupid ones there like Ducklett, Seismitoad and Beartic (WTF)
They’ll probably end up growing on me. The Gen IV english names sounded weird at first aswell (Not as weird as these though).

69. Hydreigon the new flower pokemon (hydrainga). All names are awesome especially Roggenrola. HAHAHA

70. Pansage could also be referring to a cooking pan and Simisage could be the word simmer considering how they’re cooking themed.

Darmanitan could also be darma + orangutan

Foongus & Amoongus = Fungus Amongus

Elgyem = LGM = Little Green Men
Beheeyem = BEM = Bug Eyed Monster
Both are scifi terms referring to aliens

1. Ummm…Pansage and Simisage are the Fire Type monkeys. You’re thinking of Pansear and Simisear. 🙂

1. I’m saying all three of them have Pan and Simmer in their names because they are all cooking themed. One is broccoli, one is a cooking flame, and one is water boiling over. The gym leaders that have them are cooking themed.

71. I think Deerling’s name may be a play off of ‘darling’
Nonetheless, it’s a pretty bad name for what was attempted :/
Some I like though, I think Chandelure is kind of pretty

72. Personally, I think these names are amazing. My personal favorites would have to be Foongus/Amoonguss (Fungus Amongus pun <3), and Elgyem/Beheeyem. If they end up being fake, I will be crushed. u_u

73. Here’s the thing that annoys me the most.

Have any of you seen the beta English Kanto names? Things as cheesy as “Ess” and “Cargo”, et cetera? These remind me of them. BIGTIME. Hello, “Throh”/”Sawk”? “Foongus”/”Amoongus”? That’s stupid and makes the game sound, again, as if it is for five-year-old children.

Try harder, NOA. 😐

74. This might have already been said, but about Pawniard: it wouldn’t be “pwn + rapier,” it would be “pawn + rapier.” That’s why Bisharp is drawn from Bishop – they’re both referring to chess pieces.

1. I used to do this alot on psypokes, where its called amnesia attack. I did like 17minutes for gen1-4 LOL.
But yeah, 15 minutes seems better for names that we just found out, good training xDD

2. I had one already started from when we got the japanese names. Search Torterraman on Sporcle. It should be on there, though it doesn’t have all english names. Once this list is officially confirmed, they will be updated.

75. The ‘Simi’ in Simisage et al will come from Simian, the term for the larger or ‘higher’ primate species, including a number of monkeys, gibbons, and the great apes.

76. Best names this generation:
BearDICK
CoFAGrigus
SOCK
Emperor PALPItoad
HAXorus
Fun-goes among-us (THEY ARE SPREADING AIDS)
JoltDICK
Unfezant (ELEPHANT)
*applause*

1. And, I am a LOLER not a HATER 😉
So please DO NOT post comments trying to explain those names!!
I already know enough XD!!

77. Pokejungle, along with Crustaceon. Crustle’s name might also relate to Crust (as in the Earth’s crust)

78. Also “Krookodile” may also be in reference to “Crook” which is another word for a criminal/bad person.

1. It also says in that wiki article, that in that mythical culture…Yama is believed to be the first mortal who died.

Sounds a bit like Yamask/Desumasu…

79. Sigilyph, may also contain the word “Sign”…..maybe I’m not 100% on that one.
Also….ever think that Pawniard could relate to the Pawn on a chess board rather than the internet term “pwn”? I think that’s more likely considering it’s evo relates to Bishop, another chess piece. (and a stronger chess piece at that)

Also, I heard somewhere there was a joke about “Foongus” and “Amoongus. I think there’s some famous phrase called “There’s a fungus among us”. (“There’s a foongus amoongus”) It’s a bit like with the abra line.

I saw someone mention that “Heatmor” might have some relation to the EAT in anteater…

and Zweilous looks like it contains jealous. Which the two heads might be since I don’t think they’re on good terms. :p

Now this is just speculation with a bit of a “feeling”, but the “grigus” in Cofagrigus makes me think of Rigormortis…..maybe it’s just me. Another speculation is that Vullaby reminds me of Lullaby. I wonder if it’s pronounced like that?

Personally I think “Sawk” would have been better called “Sawkem” (Sock-em)

80. I don’t know if this has been said or not yet, but I thiink that Sewaddle comes from Sew + Swaddle, not the caterpillar species that was said. Even though it makes sense because the caterpillar species is one that uses leaves, Sewaddle is classified as the “Sewing Pokémon”. However, I could be wrong 😛

81. shouldn’t hihidaruma’s english name be from Daruma and orangutan?:) Titan works too, but doesn’t fit the primate part of him

1. That’s what I thought, but I don’t really see how titan could really work for it…except for the fact that it is uber strong :3

82. Funfgus Among us is what I think it would be for Tamagetake and its evolution. It’s a phrase I’ve seen used in various places showing the different Mushrooms from the Mario games. Though possibly some other meanings as well.

83. I was thinking alomomola could also be from mom and aloe like the plant that heals burns.. Also it can be spelled backward and forwards lol 🙂

84. A few name origin nitpicks:

• Lilipup also references the Island of Liliput from Jonathon Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels (please don’t mention that new movie starring Jack Black)
• Lampent also incorporates the word lambent, which means glowing or flickering with a soft radiance. Chandelure plays off of “lure” and how it lures in vicitms to steal their souls (in the Pokédex).
• You say Mienshao’s name originates from a “Chinese martial art.” Specifically, it’s referring to Shaolin, a style of Kung Fu popularized by marital arts movies. It’s also a Buddhist monastery in China.
• Braviary also refers to an aviary
• Not sure how Krookodile references Nixon. He didn’t invent the word “crook,’ y’know. It’s more likely playing off of how it’s the Menace Pokémon, looks like it’s wearing sinister (Kamina) sunglasses, and how it’s generally pretty mean.
• Pawniard also refers to a poniard, or a small, slim dagger once used in fencing in ye olde days.

I felt these couldn’t go unspoken.

85. — Pawniard is definitely not from “pwn.” Judging from its evolution’s name, it’s more likely that it’s from the chess piece pawn.
— It may be worth mentioning how Woobat conveniently sounds a lot like Zubat <:
— Ducklett may be directly using the word "cygnet" here– that is, a baby swan.
— Rufflet probably isn't using "let" here; it's just using the -et/ette suffix to denote something small.
— Druddigon may just be drudge + dragon, but that may be quite unlikely.
— Darmanitan, instead of being daruma + titan, is probably daruma + orangutan, which does heavily affect the pronunciation.

86. Come on, the ‘Nixon’ bit is obviously a joke. Krookodile and crook is obvious, so PJ made a joke.

87. Another speculation, but this is probably wrong. For Reuniclus, could it be Reunion + Cluster? I know nucleus sounds more correct, but I thought that maybe this was a possibility.

88. Sazandora line should be:
Deino (ein, corruption of dino)
Zweivern (zwei, corruption of wyvern)
Dreigon (drei, corruption of dragon)

1. It basically is Dreigon, just with an added pun with the “Hy” which is based off the mythical Hydra, a beast with 3 heads.

89. I think Unfezant is a play on the phrase ‘a pheasant’ in French or something. Un Fezant. The design of the Pokemon reminds me of Paris for some reason, so that’s why I’m thinking France, but idk

90. Personally I hate puns emphasis on HATE. Although I like the Kibago line and Deino line. Plus I would like to add that Accelgor might be a play on Excelsior or however you spell it.

91. I think the Gothita evolutions are more likely based on Goth+Senorita and Goth+Mademoiselle.

92. I got a few suggestions.

Serperior should be Palmarck (Palm + Monarch)
Zebstrika should be Zebrike (Zebra + Strike)
Tranquill oughta be Tranquail (Tranquil + Quail)
Deino, umm… Diuno (Dino + Uno)
Zweigon > Hyduo (Hydra + Duo)
Hydreigon > Tripydra (Triple + Hydra)

1. Actually the sneaking of German into Pokemon names was clever as they used words from other countries in this gen and it reflects the International intent for New York which these games are based.

93. UK Nintendo Magazine revealed some english pokemon names:
Doryuzu -> Excadrill (matches the list)
Mamanbo -> Alomomola (also)
Kurumiru -> Sewaddle (also too!)
This makes the list closer to truth!! yay!!

94. I figured out some names (i think):
Conkeldurr-Con(k)crete + Elder
Boldore-Bold + Ore (A Bold ore)
Krookodile-C(K)rook + -odile (As in crocodile)
Ferroseed/thorn-Ferro (a type of rock, element etc.) + seed/thorn
Chandelure-Chanderlier + lure

95. Uh PJ Lillipup actually is lilliput you know a reference to Gulliver’s Travels that made “lilliputian” a dictionary word for something really small.

96. YES!!!!
I finally figured out Druddigon!
It’s two words Dragon + Rudd
ruddy (ˈrʌdɪ)

— adj , -dier , -diest
1. (of the complexion) having a healthy reddish colour, usually resulting from an outdoor life
2. coloured red or pink: a ruddy sky

Fun fact: Ruddy in British slang means damned.
Actually it’s cool they went Old English for it gives the beastie a past dating back to the time of knights.

97. Furthermore Yamask is a reference to the Egyptian god of Death himself- Osiris. Yama is what he’s named in India.
This is an excerpt from a website-
he Egyptian deity Osiris in India was called Yama (Control), since he was the controller of death by being the controller of the breath of life (prana-yama). This also relates Yama to Asar, since as Asura, he would hence be the ‘Asu-ra’ (Ruling-breath), the Ruler of Breath or Life and Death as Pranayama etc., relating to the same.
‘Desumasu’ translates to Death mask- this new name is a re-translation of that moniker.

98. The names are a lot more creative then I imagined 🙂

Although samurott should have been called Ottrocean
