Pokémon trademarks Entei in Japan, ignites online speculation

Nintendo Co., Ltd., Creatures Inc., and Game Freak Inc. have jointly filed a trademark application for Entei’s Japanese name, エンテイ, in Japan. It isn’t uncommon for some popular Pokémon to have their names trademarked, but another reason is if they’re going to star in an upcoming game or be featured heavily in marketing.

Because of it’s origins in Generation II, Pokémon Gold & Silver, some fans have wondered if it may be connected to a Johto follow-up of 2018’s Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! Currently there’s no further evidence to support that speculation, but it remains a possibility.

Personally, I believe it may be connected to Pokémon UNITE, the multiplayer online battle arena game announced in June. Forty Pokémon were trademarked in Japan last January and some were related to the Isle of Armor DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shield, but many were ultimately confirmed for inclusion in UNITE and had no special role in the DLC.

Both theories are pure conjuncture and no one really knows what fans will get, if anything. Let us know what you think the trademark may mean in the comments below! Think Raikou and Suicune will also appear?
