  2. If you could keep any dog Pokemon as a pet, which would it be? For sake of ease, Mightyena counts in this case because Poochyena is very doglike and its evo keeps some of these traits.

Also, any dogs you do have: what dog mon do they most resemble?

  3. I finally got some more time to play on my Switch in the last few days and man Mania is fuuuuun! The boss battles are intense, the music is great and I’m just having a good time with it!

  4. If Pokemon King and Queen are real, the legends will be a Chinese Dragon and a Fenghaung, probably ???/Dragon and Fire/???, with the secondary types giving them a balance. Water/Dragon and Fire/Fairy would work, but Water/Dragon was already a legendary.

  6. So.. how Expansive are the Yo-Kai Watch games?
I feel like Visually.. they are already ahead of Pokemon. Which wasn’t hard to do seeing as all they had to do is play a Pokemon game and decide what to do differently. Like the attention to detail.. And it would likely take less for them to adapt it to being a Nintendo Switch game.
But, I feel like because of all this detail, from the little gameplay I have seen, they prefer using the same scenery repeatedly, making you search every corner of it unlike a Pokemon game with a relatively large map you just move from town to town in.
Does Yo-Kai even have as much Staying power as Pokemon now tho.. like is it’s popularity increasing?
I don’t hear anyone speculating about how great it would be on Switch..
In my eyes.. it’s a glorified kids game.. Pokemon may be as well.. but Yo-kai seems for those even younger and less strategy.. .. could be wrong

      • Guess it’s like any other kids show with a small following… bakugan.. Beyblade.. That thing where u shoot marbles out of a little toy..
        Never could last.. interesting tho

        • Can Beyblade finally put itself to rest? Never saw the original show, but the revive that was on CN was great… till that started to drag it to the ground (season 3 should’ve ended it, then they added Shogun Steel, Beywheelz and ruined the whole thing)

This new one on Disney XD I won’t bother cause its probably just as bad

    • Oh wow.. I just saw the changed they are making on another site.. mentioned below… Wow hmm…
I feel them taking a more serious turn is putting them in Direct competition with Pokemon. Which is not smart if you ask me.. they will Surely fail now.
I mean.. it was supposed to be extra silly and less rule based right?
Why would anyone Chooses this over Pokemon. Wow… Ok. I might actually watch a few episodes of the new season now tho.. seems interesting..
The ugly mons are even more Ugly tho :///

      • I mean it’s definitely a game I suggest to Pokémon fans

They shouldn’t try to compete because they can’t win, Pokémon has a much longer fanbase and one of the biggest one the planet

They should stick to what they already were doing from the start. Make an original game that can hit big with kids and if possible could grow into a high grossing game

    • Umm firstly Yo-Kai Watch isn’t like Pokémon its a similar RPG, but I vastly different in many ways

They don’t span as wide an area as Pokémon does (which does a whole country/region) Yo-kai is based in 1 city in the first and adds two more in the second (the third is brand new as it happens in America and Japan). The only thing wrong is that adapting to Switch will need to rework the battle system (which I doubt will work if they don’t change it because it just doesn’t work without two screens)

They do make you search the whole place, not one place is left out of having quests, story, etc.

It’s growing mildly now, but at one point before SuMo it was preferred at time for the Yo-kai mascot Jibanyan to appear at children’s events over Pikachu (Can’t find the exact evidence, but I remember what I read). Heck it till the most recent one actually beat every Star Wars movie in theaters (Japan only) with their movies.

Yo-kai Watch seems more for a younger audience, but competitive is much harder and imo much more fun than Pokémon

Why? Well because any Yo-kai can be pulled off as a great competitive one not just a few like in Pokémon and requires luck and skill at what works best with each other and to be able to pull off feats that way (Unlike Pokémon you can’t crunch the numbers)

It’s a formidable game that I hope lives to see more and more games to come (sadly its more Japanese style puts off many Americans and sales are poor here so)

  8. #8: Life is Strange Before the Storm

Well this was certainly a surprise. After a year without a Season 2 announcement, I kinda just figured Life is Strange had run its course. It was a great, if flawed adventure game and it struck an emotional chord in me that I really didn’t expect from a game where the main character unironically says “Are you cereal?”. But come E3 and we came to learn there was a prequel on the way starring the side character Chloe Price.
I was optimistic because I loved the game (the title of witch I will condense to LiS for convenience’s sake) and I loved Chloe, but a part of me was still skeptical. LiS’s main mechanic of turning back time was a huge aspect of the game to be thrown out. The turn back time mechanic allowed you the freedom of changing immediate choices if they turn sour, they also gave you moments where you had to pick the lesser of two evils where no matter what you picked, it doesn’t turn out as you want it to and you are left wondering if that was really the right choice.
Further impacting the game was the fact that it WAS a prequel and if you played the original (which if you really want to get the most enjoyment out of this game you will have wanted to play the original) you know the fate of both of the main characters, Chloe and Rachel. none of your actions can have too much of an impact without messing up the canon.
LiS had the facade of an American highschool drama while hiding a deeper and darker world in the town of Arcadia Bay full of murder, drugging teen girls, and very questionable dialogue. As Innuendo Studios pointed out in their video on The genre of LiS, (https://youtube.com/watch?v=19xgdLF5agU)with that bubble burst, how could they pull it again with another game without it being predictable
So as I headed into Episode One, I was very interested to see how they tackled these very damning. Pardon the length of this review and stay with me. I really like this franchise and I think this game is worth playing to learn from. This may be more of an analysis more than review but hey, I wanna talk about it.

    Spoilers

Before the Storm makes up for the lack of a turn back time mechanic in two ways. The first may be subjective but I found that it gets you in the mindset of Chloe. Since her character is already pretty fleshed out by the original, I enjoyed acting out situations in ways that I may not have if I was playing as Max. I usually try to be nice and good to people in these sorts of games but not so this time. This is enhanced by the backtalk mechanic which leads me to the second thing to make up for the lack of time travel… back talking. Sometimes during conversation, an option appears that lets you “talk back” in order to get what you want. Selecting it will leading you to a sort of “minigame” where you need to pay attention to what they say and select the option based on certain lines. I think this is a great idea and gets you to think fast because it introduces a timer when the rest of the game’s choices don’t.
While I love this idea, it could’ve been executed better. Firstly, the choice to start backtalk is marked by an icon. I feel like if it was left unmarked, then being greeted by the backtalk GUI would be a surprise and you would have to stay on your feet during conversations. These sequences should also be more common instead of only a few times an episode.
Onto the topic of story, which is important because this game is basically an interactive story so needless to say it needs to be good.
So how does Before the Storm solve the issue of genre? Well firstly, it wastes no time letting the player know that this story is about the shady side of Arcadia Bay. Chloe is already wrapped up in it anyways and by the very beginning of Episode 2, she is expelled from Blackwell Academy. Before the Storm instead focuses in on the relationship of Chloe and Rachel and the ghosts of their pasts. While Chloe grieves the loss of her father and pushes against her mother’s boyfriend David becoming a bigger part of her life, Rachel desires to uncover what her parents are hiding.
Their relationship is extremely executed too. Rachel, a shining student and theatre star is a foil to Chloe who couldn’t care less for school, its rules or any authority really. Both take a little from each other and push the other out of their comfort zones. Chloe and Rachel skip school a day and through circumstance, Chloe is put into the spotlight with Rachel in the school play. The scene proceeding the performance sticks out to me the most as it is just such a fantastic character scene. It completely seals them together despite them knowing each other for only a short time. There’s an energy felt between them as they laugh about the situation they were just put in and it tops off with a choice that really establishes how you see the relationship as a player. You could ask for a tattoo, but if you aren’t heartless you would ask for her bracelet or a kiss. From then on Rachel’s story with her parents kicks off and by now you are totally invested in her. I feel like Rachel is truly the strong point of the game.
While Episode 2 is extremely strong and I would consider better than some from the original, Episode 3 feels just sort of anti climactic. Non of the plotlines feel like they were tied up in a satisfying way. The game really needed another episode. There were really great ideas like the idea that Rachel, the star actor of her school, could really just be using Chloe to get what she wants. This is given a throw away line in episode 3 but it never leads to anything.
Rachel is also made absent for last half of the series which is a choice I really don’t understand because the ending confrontation would’ve been made even more interesting if she was present and I think could’ve made for a much more satisfying conclusion. I think they wanted to have a dramatic difficult choice at the end but even then, neither choice leads to a particularly satisfying ending.
I think the game could’ve really contested with the original LiS if it was just given more time. Characters like Mikey and his brother don’t really seem to have a conclusion, they sort of do, but not quite. Much of this game is “coming close” to something. It comes close to posing an interesting question about drug addiction, it comes close to creating a theme of trust and a theme of parent figures but again, just not quite. It’s kind of unfortunate. There is supposed to be a fourth bonus episode coming out but it takes place after the end of Before the Storm so I can’t see these issues getting a chance to be resolved.
Some random thoughts… I really like the two new friend characters. They bring out Chloe’s friendlier side and the DnD segments were fun even if they could drag on a bit. Any scene with Nathan Price was completely heartbreaking and really adds to the tragedy of his character. The amount of work put into the journal entries really surprised me. They really inform Chloe’s character and gives you further insight to all the stuff she’s going through. Rhianna DeVries had huge shoes to fill replacing Ashly Burch and did a good job. She’s a bit more of a vulnerable Chloe which I think fits considering the spot Chloe is in as a character. Finally, I feel like they still need to work on the animations. I don’t think the original had great animations but I don’t remember being this stiff.
Overall, there is enjoyment to be had here if you are already a fan of Life is Strange, otherwise I’d say just try the original. It may not be your style but I still consider it the better game. I am glad I played it, I just hope Season 2 can recapture what made the original so interesting.

    • Yeah it’s definitely a big change for them. The toys will really be interesting to see. I wonder if the quality will be better actually. After the legacy Gold Ranger fiasco I’d hope Hasbro does a better jobs with future figures.

      • Hopefully they do. I haven’t picked up any Zords since Dino charge because of how they decided to handle the Auxiliary zords in Njnja steel. That said I am patiently waiting for legacy in space zords. Really want the Astro and Delta Megazord. Love that combination so much

        • I bought my (adult lol) bother the Japanese Kyuranger zord and it was crazy to see how different the Japanese versions of the toys are compared to the US ones. Hopefully Hasbro see that the quality should match their Japanese counterparts.

          • That is my main hope! I remember how much better the older zords were as a kid. Animus from wild force comes to mind. That thing had so much detail to it and looked like it stepped out of show. Then the Dino charge zords had little to no detail in it. Just the front mainly. Back was completely bare. And I am betting Kyuranger is our next series.

          • Yeah it likely is. From what I’ve seen of the Japanese show it’s a lot of fun. And yeah the older toys from back in the late 90’s to early 2000’s were pretty high quality. I remember that actually had metal parts like the legacy ones now do. Not sure about how the regular zords are for the more recent series as I haven’t bought PR toys in like forever hahah

          • Yeah they aren’t the best. The dinocharge zord that I owned had zero detail on the back. Like it was completely plain colors. It was offputting to me.

          • Yeah that’s lame. From what I’ve seen on shelves the newer toys are pretty lame and a little TOO plastic-y. I’d partially blame the shows for that tho since I feel like a lot of the shows make the zords based on what they think they can make into toys, but even still the newer stuff isn’t great. Hopefully the Hasbro stuff is good.

          • Yeah I am not a big fan of the Mecha in ninja steel. Now the next two shows that could potentially be our next power ranger show I love the Mecha. Kyuranger and Lupinranger vs Patoranger

          • REALLY interested in Lupinranger Vs Patoranger. It’s such an interesting idea that they haven’t done before (I don’t think?) and should bee cool too see.

          • If they do it for the series here they could do what ninja storm was ordered finally suppose to be. Look up power rangers Hexagon
