FAKE: First Alleged Gen VIII Details Surface

REMINDER: We discuss rumors not to pass them off as fake news confirmed information, but to stimulate discussion and highlight possibilities. Never treat this or share this as fact, because it is entirely unconfirmed information which may or may not be true.

The next main Pokémon title has already been confirmed to be a Nintendo Switch game, but not much else is officially known at this point. This hasn’t stopped some Chinese sources from sharing potential information about the game though. Our intrepid rumor reporter PokéSirena (you can follow her on Twitter) has helped us track down and translate the latest online gossip. These are from some of the same people who knew about Rainbow Rocket before it was revealed which is why we’ve taken particular note.

  • The Chinese localization team has already finished translating the games’ script
  • There will be no new Mega Evolutions introduced in the new games
  • Z-Moves return and now use motion control to activate using the Joy-Cons
  • Central plot revolves around the conflict between tradition and innovation
  • Region inspiration has been rumored to be Spain or Italy
  • Release to come late 2018 (~December) or early 2019

These details pale in comparison to what has also been said though, and that is the games feature a new, simplified battle system which has been compared to that of the Digimon World games. For those not familiar with them they use a real-time battle style in which moves are still selected via menu and include the option to attack or block moves from your opponent. It has also been compared to the battle system of Pokkén Tournament in which moves are either attacks, blocks or grabs and work in a rock-scissors-paper fashion.

If the above were to be true it would certainly be a change for longtime Trainers and could have the potential to disrupt the deep strategy game competitive players love.

What do you think?

  1. Retain infinite TMs, Ride pkmn (and expand on them). Bring back seasons, compatibility with Bank & older games. Add option to have the first pokemon in your party outside its ball like HGSS (optional)

Take the combat system of Ni No Kuni 2

  2. People are afraid of change, it’s normal, but I think change is always welcome as long as you don’t kill the foundation that was built for the past 20 years

  3. The thing that I found interesting that I learned a few days ago is that Reggie Fils-Aime said right after E3 when the game was announced to be in development that the Switch game would be a “traditional find, battle, train type experience.” So that could potentially backfire on the rumor’s face, though it’s hard to argue with Chinese leakers that got two of the three points for USUM right in the story on Pokejungle back in October. I honestly don’t know what to believe anymore. The Chinese are just too damn leaky now that they have legal access to the main series games. Look what happened with Sun and Moon. A complete disaster. We knew everything months in advance thanks to that “Riddler” guy.

  4. Well guys, I think that I’m going to take my leave. I’m going to have dinner and watch Episodes 15 and 16 of Chuggaaconroy’s Black and White Let’s Play to get my mind off of things. Thanks for the good discussion as always! Good night everyone!

  5. Pokemon battles can be harder then a chess game because of natures, abilities, strategy etc. I don’t want them to become another pokken game where you simply attack and block attacks.

          • But Star… Even if its a stupid opinion to you, it’s his opinion. Yeah the wording may be a bit odd, but that’s what he thinks and if that’s how it is to him then he’s not wrong, but he’s also not right as there is no real way to say how it works for everyone because everyone is different.

          • It’s that she wants the game to change because she feels it needs to. While most others are ranting and complaining that shes wrong and that disheartens her and makes her angry and upset

          • That’s understandable and I agree with her on the game needing change however joker above is just stating his opinion, she shouldn’t be attacking him.
Maybe I disagree would have been more appropriate.
            Oh well we’ll leave it.

          • Yeah. I think I’m starting to actually see into the Jungle and how people here are

I was going to post, but have the feeling it will be ignored for being extensive, a bit overwhelming to some and most will do exactly what it contradicts, say I’m wrong as its about how opinions aren’t right or wrong and how many here I think believe in differing opinions, but they believe that opinions can be wrong (Which actually science proves that opinions aren’t right or wrong)

          • Same here :] I’m also beginning to or have already understood this jungle.
Most of the junglers are great and cool.
Then you get one or two individuals who are rude, immature and childish.
Then you get many junglers who don’t say anything when one jungler is rude but will burn anyone else.
Then you get me, you and many others who are laid back but willing to defend other junglers respectfully.
But overall this place is quite relaxed save for a few individuals.
I try to not let the negativity effect me and do whatever the heck I want.
I mean it’s only a website, not like its IRL so it’s nothing major.
            :] :] :]

      • Hey guys I think you all just read my comment in the wrong way 🙂 My simple point was that I don’t want pokemon battles to change from brain strategy to kick hard. I mean if anyone wants a kick hard game can buy Pokken, I don’t see why a main core game has to fuse with Pokken when it’s been years that people prepare strategies for World Tournaments and online competions.

  6. Is it bad I’m more excited for an animal crossing switch (which isn’t even confirmed) than for pokemon switch? >.>

I guess it’s just that the problems I have with the AC series are so minute. But with pokemon you never really know what you’re gonna get. USUM has kind of left a bad taste in my mouth I suppose.. That said, I am very much anticipating Pokemon Switch. I think this will be THE most important game they ever put out and I really hope they do right by it.

    • What really turns me off is that GF are either afraid or just blind to realise they have to change it up. Nintendo did with Zelda and look how that turned out.

I’m not saying a full out open world Pkmn game because that would be hard to do, but maybe something like Odyssey. Smaller, seperate areas but make them sandbox style for free exploration. This could be larger routes or make another island region idk man

      • You made me realize that I think a lot has to do with gamefreak’s attitude.

-Didn’t give us battle frontier because they didn’t think we wanted it (Obviously not in tune with the fanbase if you honestly think that)
-Said not to get our hopes up for Pokemon Switch (thanks, that builds hype!)
-Just the whole USUM “marketing” and delivery of the game. It’s half baked and a cash grab. I’d be able to swallow it more if it wasn’t two versions. As is, it’s basically just an extra $40 so that you can catch blacephalon/stakataka

      • BotW did NOT change it up, they returned to their roots.

        BotW is basically modern TLoZ.

THAT is what made it good. They removed the changes they’d made for the rest of the games and went back to how it used to be (they literally started with the original game and developed a 2.5D version based on it first as seen in the making of trailers), then added open world elements.

They do not need to change core aspects of the game.

If you don’t like how it is currently, you can and should stop playing because you don’t like the game.

What they need to do is return to their roots and go more open world like it used to be and bring back the dozens of features they’ve removed while also adding to them/adding new features.

If you want something else, play the side seriesthat has that type of battle or request a new side series be made with whatever type of battle you wish to see, don’t demand they screw them up for those of us who actually DO like the games.

    • I don’t think so, it’s not like we have much to go off of. We all expected a Pokemon game for the Switch to come out eventually, so its confirmation isn’t anything special.
I’m not very excited either. Perhaps that’s because I’m generally apathetic about everything.

      • I probably won’t be excited about gen 8 until at least I see what the graphics will look like. I think we’ll be able to tell a lot about the game from just one screenshot

        Reply
    • I think it’s because animal crossing doesn’t really oversaturate itself whereas we literally just came off a Pokémon game. I’m also way more hyped for other games even though I really enjoy Pokémon

    • I would like to see some more, but I also prefer new Pokemon, so if it were a choice between the two I would have to pick the latter. Also they need to do better than Fugtrio and Pincushian.

      Reply
      • I don’t think is a lazy thing, almost every design of pokemon has a meaning, love the blonde dugtrio and his meaning, or the fire dancer marowak, and ninetales is just gorgeous, Its just like the real animal kingdom, and GF dont just revamp old Pokemon, instead add new meaning of old pkm.

        Reply
        • Sure but they’re just using an old idea and just adding on to it, instead of makingg a completely new Pokemon. I just don’t think they should focus on regionals more than actual Pokemon.

          Reply
      • In a way I agree with this, though I do love Alolan Muk, Marowak, Ninetales, Snowslash and Raichu and wouldn’t want them to replace the originals either. I think the more drastic type change ones are probably more worthwhile but conceptually they couldn’t all have followed suit. I think it’s a nice way of showing environmental effects on Evolution in the series outside of say, branched evolutions. Would you have been OK with them if they were branched evolutions with different names and numbers? I sort of feel Alolan Muk could actually have been a Muk evolution if it were bigger and with a small design tweak.

        • My issue is more with the fact that none of the current regional variants didnt need this treatment (could argue maybe the Vulpix line because they were pretty irrelevant but thats about it). I like the idea behind them, because it really gives the idea that pokemon can adapt to climate changes like regular animals, but they dont really add anything to game as a whole except for maybe A.Vulpix/Ninetales

          Reply
          • They could have used tons of other Pokemon, who didnt add too much and could have become better by giving them a different typing and movepool. Like for instance the Ledya line, pretty darn average now but a regional variant bug/fighting could make it a lot more viable.

Instead they give us thrash like Raticate and Persian, whom barely anybody liked to begin with

          • They just took the most recognizeable gen 1 mons and gave them reskins to pamper genwunners. The concept at its core is pretty good, but they’ve done nothing with it. I hope it doesn’t come back unless they get their act together

          • genwunner-pandering aside, alolan forms were my favorite concept they’ve ever done and i’d love to see them do local forms for non-Kanto pokemon in gen. 8!

          • Regular Muk is entirely forgettable in competitive, Alolan Muk is OU because it’s practically a hard stop to Tapu Lele and has a fantastic typing. That’s what a fair few Alolan were meant to be, with Alolan Sandslash essentially being a Hail-themed Excadrill and all.

      • Or because, from a resources standpoint, it’s easier to tweak an existing model and keep the animations rather than make an entirely new Pokemon and animations for it?

A lot more goes into making pokemon than just creating front and back sprites now, you know.

        Reply
    • I also enjoy the regional variants. They’re an interesting take on actual evolution and offer old possibly forgotten Pokemon a new chance to shine.

    • F**K regional variants, BRING BACK MEGASSSS!!!!!!!!!! Alolan Exeggutor would have worked so much better as Mega Exeggutor instead.

  8. After watching this history of Hyrule video with updated info from BOTW, it made me wonder why they didn’t choose to complete the story. It would’ve been wonderful to see Hyrule being restored, the castle and surrounding areas clear of Ganon’s corruption, and everyone celebrating and relieved of the end of the threat. I wish they’d change their mind and make a 3rd DLC, or at least an update with cutscenes of post-canon and some new side quests.

  9. So the game is supposed to come out December 2018 or early 2019, yet the script is supposedly complete and fully translated? Not buying it

    Reply
    • neither am I, I doubt that the game is anywhere near completion, that or they have been developing the game since before Sun and Moon, something that is a decent possibility.

      Reply
    • You act like script completion = game completion
You think a movie is ready for release once the script is done? No, all scenes need to be filmed and edited over the course of a few months
You think creating an entire game can be done overnight once the script is finished?

      Reply
      • In video games, the script is typically of the last things finished, done only a few months or weeks before a game launches. Even if they somehow completed it, the translation into Chinese probably isn’t high up on their priorities considering the Switch hasn’t released in China yet.

  10. Maybe we’re reading into the battle system thing wrong. “Feature” doesn’t necessarily mean replace, in fact we could have an area in the new games similar to the Battle Royal in SM or the Triple Battle in BW where they could just focus on this new battle system. Since the theme is allegedly “tradition vs innovation”, the game could have the normal battles (tradition), and this new area of battling as innovation.

  11. So, I finally got Overwatch for PS4 (But it’s taking forever to download all the updates), as well as getting Unlimited World Red (I heard it wasn’t good, but it seems cool) today.
