FAKE: First Alleged Gen VIII Details Surface

REMINDER: We discuss rumors not to pass them off as fake news confirmed information, but to stimulate discussion and highlight possibilities. Never treat this or share this as fact, because it is entirely unconfirmed information which may or may not be true.

The next main Pokémon title has already been confirmed to be a Nintendo Switch game, but not much else is officially known at this point. This hasn’t stopped some Chinese sources from sharing potential information about the game though. Our intrepid rumor reporter PokéSirena (you can follow her on Twitter) has helped us track down and translate the latest online gossip. These are from some of the same people who knew about Rainbow Rocket before it was revealed which is why we’ve taken particular note.

  • The Chinese localization team has already finished translating the games’ script
  • There will be no new Mega Evolutions introduced in the new games
  • Z-Moves return and now use motion control to activate using the Joy-Cons
  • Central plot revolves around the conflict between tradition and innovation
  • Region inspiration has been rumored to be Spain or Italy
  • Release to come late 2018 (~December) or early 2019

These details pale in comparison to what has also been said though, and that is the games feature a new, simplified battle system which has been compared to that of the Digimon World games. For those not familiar with them they use a real-time battle style in which moves are still selected via menu and include the option to attack or block moves from your opponent. It has also been compared to the battle system of Pokkén Tournament in which moves are either attacks, blocks or grabs and work in a rock-scissors-paper fashion.

If the above were to be true it would certainly be a change for longtime Trainers and could have the potential to disrupt the deep strategy game competitive players love.

What do you think?

  1. Slightly random but sort of relates to this post I suppose. I seriously hope thy announce a Nintendo direct for January soon. I would love to see some new switch game reveals. Personally I am really hoping for a Luigi’s mansion 3

  2. Tradition and Innovation eh? Not only that but “innovating” the “traditional” battle system Pokemon is known for? This could end up hurting or improving the the main series game as we know it, especially for the “competitive” side.

  3. Don’t get me wrong, I like Pokkén quite a bit but I don’t think I’d take it well if the main series would have the same battle system. Part of what I love is the style of gameplay. It may seem antiquated or even archaic to some, but I don’t think that it has overstayed its welcome. Turn based games still have a lot of entertainment value, and if Pokémon were to abandon those roots, I may drift away from the franchise.

  4. Where the heck is Meredith who gives you Swords Dance in Ultra Moon? I think she must have died or been kidnapped by some Flabebes, or she was sent to some insane asylum, as I can’t find her. I’M AT HER EXACT SPOT, and she’s not there. Really?!

  6. The rumors put forth in this article aren’t really worrisome. The only thing that is a red flag for me would be the comparisons made to other battling franchises and games on the changes of combat. However, Pokémon has skimped on post-game content in favor of features that make the competitive scene much more accessible than before. I don’t think that any changes to the combat system will be too revolutionary, because they do not want to alienate people from the competitive scene. What does have me a little worried is the conflict in the upcoming generation (traditions and innovations). Don’t get me wrong it is a great conflict to center a story around. What I am worried about is that they might take the Aqua vs Magma route with this and that might be an excuse for them to have two versions for Gen VIII. (As I know that some of the people here are disgruntled by versions).

    • there WILL be two versions for Gen VIII, that will never change, it’s always going to be that way, it’s super profitable for Game Freak

      • That wont work when the games cost 60 dollars each.

People are more willing to pay 80$ than 100$

Plus the Switch isn’t really made for that 2 people meeting up and trading with different versions thing.

  7. I can see Z Moves coming back honestly, but not with motion controls lol I’ll buy the game regardless, but if they change the battle format it might be my last.

  9. Supposedly Iwao said in an interview recently that they’re happy that people are enjoying USUM and that they will continue to hype up Pokemon in 2018 so everyone should look forward to that. I’d say while it’s not a given, it’s certainly another point towards 2018 being the release year for gen 8. Should be interesting to see.

      • Never spin off. GF doesn’t make spin offs. It could just mean they’ll start talking about gen 8, but it could also mean the game might come out. Who knows at this point.

          • Not preemptively tho. Also not nearly as much as the Pokemon company itself. They’d at most retweet stuff about said spin off. They never have any hands on spin offs and rarely get very involved in promotion of them.

        • TheUltramonster6893 there is no way it’s coming in 2018 BUT if it comes out early 2019 they will probably at least talk about it/reveal it mid-2018 for a early 2019 release

          • I won’t say it’s definitely coming next year, but talking in definites isn’t a wise thing to do. It’s best to keep an open mind and not tell people that they’re out right wrong. At least not unless you know 100% fact.

    • They already said they would. They said that trials were a gen 7 thing only. Also what’s wrong with them changing things up anyway?

  11. No doubt Gen 8 is coming within the next 12-18 months, and all of this sounds great. I haven’t played much Pokken but the dynamics of it are worth investing in.
I’m totally changing the subject but DAMN, I set up my PSVR this morning and it’s completely blown my mind! All I’ve done so far are the Rez Infinite and Thumper demos (Thumper is incredible), and I’m waiting to charge my Move controllers to try Job Simulator. I am now more excited for 2018 than ever before!!!
