Ice-type Appreciation: Pokémon

One of the oft-neglected Pokémon types is Ice; their attacks are great for taking down formidable Dragon-type opponents, but the typing leaves much to be desired in terms of defense. It’s for this reason that they have often struggled competitively and now even have to contend with Fairy Pokémon trying to take their spot on teams.

There are still plenty of cool choices among the coldest Pokémon though. Collectors have often sought them for their beauty and style even if they fell short in battles. Generation I included no pure Ice-type Pokémon but did introduce us to classics such as Jynx, Lapras, Articuno and more. Further generations only bolstered the number of Ice-types available and even added an Eeveelution to the mix.

Let us know in the comments below your favorite Ice-type Pokémon from each generation, any memorable anime episodes featuring the type and any other stories you remember!

  1. Haven’t watched the video because I’m in a rush but Ice is super underrated and has some amazing designs. I hope that GameFreak buffs it a bit one day, it’s an amazing glass cannon type but the Pokémon with the stats for that are little whilst slow Ice types are plentiful. Even if it got a 50% defense buff in hail to mirror the Rock Sp. Def buff in sand it’d help a bit. If I were to choose tho I’d give it resistances to two of the following: Flying, Water, and Ground. You can argue hard enough for each for the sake of balance.

      … just… flying
It’s such a splashable attack and the resistances it has are kinda ass
      I mean
Rock is arguably as bad as ice is in its current state, electric Pokemon are rarely even bulky enough to take flying hits, steel types resist it but steel resists literally everything. Point is, we need something that can eat a brave bird and slaughter the bird

  2. Just gotta say that although he wasn’t always the MOST reliable, when Flurry (My Glaceon) got going in USUM, he put in the FINEST of work. Remember that totem Kommo-o? He froze it and slaughtered it in two turns cause he is a GOD

  3. Shoutout to Shiinotic real fast. I’ve actually grown to like it. I mean it’s not good (Honestly it’s pretty fuckin bad) but it’s quite fun to use.
That makes MOST the alolan mons usable in some capacity. They have pretty unique roles

  4. On the topic of Alolan mons, shoutout to Crabominable for being different. The boi is literally a slow tank of giga death. I really wish it wasn’t so bad but I love it regardless

  5. My I love ice typing, it has one the better designed Pkms imo. But yeah it’s stupidly weak competitively but that kinda makes sense considering it’s ice, something that is super fraill. Some of my favs are Weavile and Articuno mainly because of their design really :0

Btw GF pls make ice resist something else

  6. My suggestions for ice Type to make it not sh*t

Changes to its weaknesses and resistances

    Weak to: Fire, Rock
    Resists: Dragon, Water, Fairy, Fighting
Super Effective against: Grass, Ice, Flying and Fighting

Hail buffs. Ice types gain a buff in defenses when in hail

    A freeze version of thunderwave

More non Ice type Pokémon with abilities that benefit in hail

Introduce less walls and less glass canons to the type

Honestly I like ice type, but there needs to be more of them. Also needs to be buffed. Please take away fightings SE typing against it. I hate fighting type.

  8. Favourites:
    Gen 1 – Lapras, Articuno
Gen 2 – Swinub, Sneasel, Delibird (great ones in gen 2)
    Gen 3 – Sealeo
    Gen 4 – Mamoswine, Froslass
    Gen 5 – Vannillite, Kyurem-B
    Gen 6 – Amaura
Gen 7 – Alolan Ninetales and Snowslash

I really like Ice Types, though I do often struggle to find them a place on my team. In Gen 7 I have used both Alolan variants and I have used both of my Gen 4 favourites in the past though.

  9. Sorry for being a-wall (AWOL) for the weekend, but I have been busy with the end of the semester-still am. Just taking a moment to say that I am just before the 6th Trial-since Friday. Also to give my favorite Ice-types of each Gen. Seriously they need a buff in the future for a typing that is cool but also usually available late in game. Or just make them available earlier. I am easy to please.
