        • I miss the old Sneasel colours. I’m not a fan of the pink and yellow shiny for it, the original colours should be its shiny.

          • That probably is the reason tbh.
They did a lot of strange things in G2 because they thought it was the end.

          • Remoraid -> Octillery

The sheer number of non-evolving Pokemon: Heracross, Stantler, Shuckle, Corsola, Misdreavus, Sneasel, Skarmory, Miltank, Mantine, Qwilfish, Sudowoodo, Aipom, Yanma, Murkrow, Wobbuffet, Girafarig, Dunsparce, Delibird, Smeargle,

(I’m convinced Octillery wasn’t originally supposed to evolve from Remoraid and I’ve got a feeling Scizor was supposed to be a counterpart rather than an evolution.)

          • I heard a theory about Remoraid -> Octillery but can’t remember it now. I always just thought it was a weird monster thing like Graveler -> Golem but more shocking.

I guess that’s why so many of those received evos/pre-evos later on.

          • Graveler -> Golem isn’t too odd.
Seeing Bellossom and Vileplume and realising they’re supposed to be equals is though. Bellossom looks more like a stage 2 😛
They’ve trumped the level of weirdness since though thanks to Oshawott and the regional variants.

Yeah, that’s one of the reasons G4 was so good. G3 and G4 are still my favourites.

          • It goes from a rock to a turtle thingy, that was pretty weird to me as a kid. If only Bellossom had something of Gloom in its design. Of course it did use to be a closer colour to it until racism was called out.
Regional variants do have proper basis in nature though, even weird stuff like Exeggutor.

          • I justified it as it developing a much harder casing made of stronger rock.

Never understood that argument. Soon they won’t allow any pokemon to have black skin (completely ignoring the fact that ‘black’ people don’t actually have black skin, they have dark brown skin), and Alakazam will have to be recoloured because it looks too much like Fu Manchu (which tbh makes more sense than gloom being offensive).

Tbh Exeggutor is probably the most sensible regional variant. Makes more sense than Persian’s swollen face or Golem’s scary beard and stubby arms. (And let’s not forget ‘pancakes’ Raichu.)

          • Bellossom was deemed offensive to Polynesian people. It was odd because I remember it being Dark Blue in the official art but whatever.

I personally find Muk to have the most sensible regional variant. Persian, Fugtrio and Golem are probably worst. The best I can come up with Golem is that those patches where its ‘beard’ is are just particularly magnetic and just happen to make the iron filings attracted to it form into a beard. The weirder part is the back launcher thing.

          • Yeah, I really don’t get that.

            http://guidesarchive.ign.com/guides/15787/bellossom.gif

The idea is sensible, I’m not sure about the colours they chose though. I like Dugtrio purely because of its hilariousness and the memes its generated. If anything alolan Golem seems pretty offensive: an angry guy with a beard blowing itself up 😛

The back launcher is probably only there for rule of cool, but I don’t see how that should make its arms stubby. The facial hair can be justified but it looks awful.

          • Also Bellossoms’ original shiny used that blue and looked much more like an evolution of Gloom http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/1/17/Spr_2g_182_s.png

The colours for Alolan Muk are a little garish but it is meant to be like an oil spill type of thing. I don’t really find Alolan Dugtrio funny and I don’t look at many memes.
Alolan Golem looks like it should be head of a Gulag, like some angry Russian commander. (No offense to any Russian people). If I could be bothered to get one I would call it Gulagem or Zangeef. The stubby arms are awkward, it shouldv’e just kept Alolan Gravelers’ Lego hands. I always thought the point of Golem was that it like its’ pre-evos was meant to roll, like a boulder down a mountain, the back launcher stops that being feasible really.

          • Yeah, the back cannon broke the rolling (somehow it can still use rollout though (I think)).
I’d call mine “Gossama” or “Ossama Bin Golem”.

  5. The Global mission is at over 4x the goal and it’s not even quite 3 days in yet. If you haven’t done so I would sign up to it and the Global Link if you want a Level Ball too.

          • Although I have collected every breedable in every Apricorn Ball already so I’m using them on Legendary Pokemon now.

          • Nor do I, but other things have been calling to me more than Pokemon, like Elite Dangerous and programming, and tbh Sun didn’t live up to the hype, I still enjoy ORAS more.

          • Shiny breeding is way easier in gen 7 though and that’s what I do most now. I generally can’t buy loads of new games etc so I tend to get as much as I can out of what I have.

          • Eh I guess. SM just doesn’t have much to hook me back. Not even shinies.

I haven’t bought a new game since January.

          • I haven’t bought a new game since Sun.
There needs to be better post-game stuff but GF seems not to care too much about that anymore.

          • They spent too much time upgrading the graphics and writing the story. Graphics and story are nice, but they don’t make up for a big wide world and a variable after game. Even without the delta episode, ORAS still has contests and soaring and mirage islands and the battle maison.

Tbh I didn’t like SM’s story that much anyway, the idea was there but it didn’t feel like it had been properly handled, and it felt quite short.
Plus it was really linear, there was never a reason to backtrack. Hoenn forces the player to double back on themselves after the incident at the volcano, Johto made the player traverse the ocean twice and let the player loop back after getting rid of Sudowoodo, Sinnoh has the player cut through the central mountain several times, etc
But Alola only gets you to visit each place once (aside from where the Pokemon league is and the places where the ports are).

          • Well the main story doesn’t get you to go back but the Ultra Beast missions do. I spent more time getting my team together than on the story but that’s because I wanted all but Kommo-O to be shiny. Most people want Battle Frontier to come back which ORAS should have had. But I agree, with the Hyper Space holes, contests etc there was more to do. I feel like the real evil team could have been integrated a bit more into the story too without revealing their true intent. I’d also have liked more trainers with more than one Pokemon. More post-game level-up opportunities would be nice, oh how I miss Blissey Bases, or even the Battle Chateau from XY.

          • I can’t be bothered with the Ultra Beast missions because I don’t like any of the Ultra Beasts.

I would have much rather had a battle frontier than the UB missions.

Yeah, the player should have gone back to Aether Paradise several times instead of just visiting it once before having to infiltrate it. If they’d made the Aether foundation get involved with the player more, and fleshed it out a bit then it would have been more impressive when the final confrontation came. Defeating Faba didn’t feel like much of a victory when I’d only met him once before. Even if I hadn’t known Lusamine was evil it wouldn’t have been a shock because I’d only met her once before so she never seemed particularly benevolent to begin with. Team Skull showed up a fair bit, but even then they didn’t feel particularly threatening since Guzma only showed up once before the battle at Po Town.

Compare to ORAS: the main villain shows up as early as the oceanic museum, then again at meteor falls, then you battle him once at the top of the volcano, then you infiltrate the lilycove base, and then you meet them again at the bottom of the ocean, and finally once more after the main story when they’ve decided to stop being evil. You get more invested in stopping them because they turn up more so the character is more developed.

I forgot about the secret bases, those were great too because of battling for levels, easy evolution items and massages, and people showing off their legendaries and shinies.

          • I’m mostly interested in catching the Ultra Beasts because they are there and I am obsessive.
Guzma had so much potential I feel he needed more presence. I did create a rivalry in my mind between my Golisopod and his which made it slightly better. I feel like even Giovanni had more of an impact in Red/Blue, maybe because of how his underlings worshipped him, maybe because he appeared more than once and was also a Gym Leader.
Before the games were released I thought we’d have some story confrontations with more of the UB’s and Rotomdex would translate for them. Maybe with more interactions with Lusamine that made her more and more enamoured with the idea of them.
Aqua and Magma had ideals, they also had a rival in the other team to argue the opposite ideal. They had more definitive goals and although twisted, more of a sense that they wanted to achieve something they thought was for the good of the world.

          • Normally I’m a full on collector, but this time I’m just not feeling it.

Giovanni’s entrance was well written though because team rocket was a proper organisation that even police were struggling with, not some rag-tag gang of hoodlums. When Giovanni appears it’s momentus because his underlings really look up to him, the police fear him and his organisation has caused chaos in over half the towns. His was the rare case where not knowing who your enemy is makes them have more of an impact because you still know a lot about them before they appear.

Guzma is hardly mentioned until his first appearance and his gang are just being a nuisance, they aren’t really evil.

Yeah, the single instance of a Nihilego wasn’t really much to write home about.

Exactly, they were developed before fighting them. Lusamine doesn’t get any story until you actually turn up to fight her. They should have made you encounter her a few times before under the guise of wanting to protect pokemon and the ultra beasts from harming each other. Or at the very least make her reveal her true colours beforehand (so it’s clear that she’s evil but there’s nothing you can do about it until later).

          • An earlier Battle with Lusamine where she says she’s helping you because Tapu Koko took an interest in you and she thinks you could be a great member of the foundation when you’ve completed the island challenge could’ve been good. I assume she would know about Tapu Koko giving you the Z-ring. In reality she is testing you to see if you can help her achieve her goals.

Guzma should have appeared early on to call his goons back after you beat them for the first time. Instead this is partially split into what Plumeria does, meaning she also isn’t particularly developed because there isn’t enough focus on either. Which is an issue with having 2 antagonistic teams both against you, each having characters that need screen time. Wicke is also just there really and imo should have done something more, like trying to help you. I actually thought she might be an android an that’s why she just stood by and let stuff happen. Also Team Skull are largely aimless, I know they are set up by Lusamine as a distraction but it kind of leaves them a bit flat. They are funny though.

          • Now I think about it the island guardians were never tied to the Ultra Beasts apart from those fights they had.

Yeah. Plumeria got more character development than Guzma though. They painted her as the ‘big sister’ figure who attacks you for attacking her grunts and later sort of swaps sides.
At least Wicke was shown to be quite kindly. She should have had more screen time but she got development when she helped the player infiltrate AP.
Team Skull are flat because they’re more of a street gang than a proper Pokemon ‘conquer the world’ team. They should have made it so they interfered more with the trials and made their ultimate goal ‘payback on the trial captains’.

That settles it, next time round we can write the script 😛

  6. The best thing to ever just happened. For like three days now I’ve been thinking of a song from Skyward Sword in my head and trying to search my brain for what it’s called. I couldn’t think of it for the life of me, and suddenly it appears in my YouTube feed. I haven’t even watched skyward sword videos in months.

    • As good of a character as she is, that’s one of the only dissapointing things in the game for me. Maybe I was expecting too much, but most of the memories were just for her character development. Though I do feel this game is one of the most fitting of the title “Legend of Zelda”.
