PokéJungle Reacts: Steam Siege TCG

steam-siege-logo

It isn’t a REACT article or video, because I wouldn’t want to be accused of copyright infringement, but I am taking a look at the Pokémon TCG XY expansion Steam Siege today! I was kindly sent some boosters and both of the theme decks free of charge and now I get to share my thoughts with all of you. I’ve included both a text and video take on it, but if you want the full dramatic experience I suggest you watch the video first (or at least the booster pulls) before reading if possible.

Booster Pulls

xy11_en_8

Steam Siege has some great cards, many of which I wanted. With no BREAK cards to my name, my biggest hope was to pull at least one and, if I were really lucky, get the Yanmega Break card. There are also some normal cards that I wanted, namely Seedot and its evolutions.

Now what did I actually pull? Not the cards I had hoped going in, but still found some gems nonetheless. Luckily I did get Seedot and will definitely count that as a win.

  • Uncommons: Dewott, Drifblim (x3, 1 reverse-holo), Fletchinder (x2), Gardevoir Spirit Link (x2), Greedy Dice (x2), Klefki, Lampent, Monferno (x2, 1 reverse-holo), Shieldon, Tangrowth (x2)
  • Rares: Cobalion, Galvantula, Gardevoir EX (holo), Spiritomb, and Yveltal (holo)

I don’t have a vast breadth of knowledge when it comes to the Pokémon TCG, so how good those cards are competitively I couldn’t tell you, but my two favorites were definitely Gardevoir EX and Yveltal which both have great designs.

The bad news is, of course, I still need to buy a few more boosters to get a BREAK card to add to my collection…

Theme Decks

steam-siege-decks

The Steam Siege expansion has two pre-made decks that can be a good starting point for players looking to build their own, but don’t want to construct a deck from scratch. The Gears of Fire deck is Fire and Steel-type and centers around Volcanion and the Ring of Lightning deck focuses on Hoopa Unbound and contains Psychic and Electric-type cards.

Of the two, I definitely liked Ring of Lightning more because I’ve always had an affinity for Psychic-type cards and also due to the fact that Volcanion is not really a Pokémon that appeals to me. If I’m going to battle someone, I’d like to at least use cards of Pokémon that I enjoy. Just makes victories all the more sweet.

One thing that I was disappointed about in RoL was that it included multiple Litwick and Lampent cards, but no Chandelure! Looks like I won’t be swinging from the chandeliers tonight.

Giveaway

manaphy-mythical-pokemon-collection

We’re also going to be starting the first of several giveaways with a very special Pokémon TCG: Mythical Pokémon Collection—Manaphy set! This includes a special Manaphy card, pin and two Pokémon Generations boosters! We’ll announce how you can get a chance to win it tomorrow so stick around!

Hope you guys enjoyed our little dabble in the TCG world! If you’re eager to learn more about the competitive aspect of the game I recommend you head over to PokéBeach for some in-depth strategy articles (and hey, WPM didn’t even pay me to plug his site).

  1. I’ve been collecting the cards since they first came out way back when I was a wee lad. I’ve never tried playing the game because it just never appealed to me

  2. I’ve always wanted to collect all the full art cards to use for tokens in Magic and YuGiOh. The game is fun, but I no longer have time for competitive card games and my friends only play Magic casually.

  3. I’ve been collecting them since they first came out here in Canada, and I still do.
I never got into the whole battle scene, mainly because my mom threatened my brothers and myself, that if she ever caught us battling with them that she would through all of our cards in the trash. (She was one of those parents that believed that Pokemon was evil. So we were very lucky that she even let us have them. LOL She likes Pokemon herself now. Her faves being Bulbasaur, and any horse like Pokemon.) Of course she got better with that over the years, to the point that she didn’t care what we did with them, but I never got into the whole battling thing. I collect almost any type of card, except for Magic the gathering, those one I will not touch with a 10 foot pole. Those ones I myself believe are evil, as I’ve seen some pretty creepy shit happen to some people who got involved with those cards, things I’d rather not experience myself.

    • lmao Magic is just a card game man. No different from Pokémon or YuGiOh. In my experience, excluding Pokémon cause I haven’t met many play so of that TCG around where I live, Magic players are often far more mature and respectful towards others than YuGiOh players.

  4. Ever since I got a holographic Zekrom out of a booster pack I pinched back in the beginning of black and white
I’ve been shoplifting at least 3-9 packs a month collecting rare holographic cards

  5. I love the TCG. It’s MUCH better than VGC. Everyone uses something different and they all have equal chances to win because of odds. I use a Flareon EX deck at my local tournaments and my ball of fluff won me second place. Lost to a Greninja Break deck very last round…

      • I bet there is a league near you (if you live in the US).. should be easy to get started again……except for money!
I quite like the Online version in comparison because they give out free EX cards/Boosters easily and the trading is fast! You can even buy bulk code cards from ebay to get started quickly (paying for digital, ugh!).
In all honestly, I would rather go back to the tables and play again myself, but I wonder if the money is worth spending on things that rotate so quickly. Also, friends too 🙂

        • Part of the problem is that I like to play with older cards (ie. from Heart Gold and Soul Silver) and I believe those aren’t allowed in leagues? I don’t really feel motivated enough to make a deck out of new cards, not out of laziness, just out of lack of intrest. Would be fun thoygh

          • True.. I don’t think they casually make Legacy tournaments. Maybe friends that get together like that.
The game is still fun (got back into it last week in fact, online). I was surprised by some deck ideas! The amount of people playing and the diversity is amusing. Though the learning curve is rather scary (rules, cards, etc).

  6. I love playing the TCG. Steam seige is such a good set I play two decks greninja break or mega alakazam ex and mega gengar ex decks.

  7. It’s funny I recently got back into TCG and it’s a lot more fun ten I remembered. It’s annoying with all those “fake attacks/moves” but it was definitely a heck of a good time. Even pulled a Volcanion EX recently!

  8. I haven’t collected Pokémon cards since 2002 when the majority of my collection was stolen, including the rare Charizard card and Ancient Mew.

  9. Serious question here: how many of you actually buy the TGC cards? And if you do, do you actually play the game? My brother is obsessed with the cards (but much less with the video games, which bothers me for some odd reason) but doesn’t actually play the game itself. On top of that, he only cares about the special EX cards, which he might not even get at all.

  10. Tomorrow’s trailer predictions:
    – Official L(R?)ugarugan reveal
    – Cutiefly evo
    – Pikipek 3
    – Alolan Persian
    ———–
So really I’m not expecting much new stuff, maybe 1 new pokemon (if we’re not counting cutiefly evo as a “new” pokemon) and 1 new alola form.

  11. During vacation I was able to come up with 4 more fakemon ideas! That brings my fake dex to around 130! 😀
My ideas for anyone curious are a three stage Water/Poison Squid based on an oil spill, a three stage Water/steel shark line where the final one uses two anchors as weapons, a three stage Poison/Rock Snail line and a three stage Poison/Ice parasite line

  12. Alright, at this point the NX is almost certainly delayed IMO. If it isn’t delayed, then I don’t know what they’re doing sitting on this information and holding it back for so long. You need time to advertise, generate hype, produce units (well they might already be doing that), etc.. Plus it’s really unlikely that they would make an unannounced announcement (bleh), so if they announced an announcement today, it’d still be around 2 weeks I’d say before we get any info.

      • I honestly had a lot of faith in Kimishima; he’s a succesful buisnessman, so he of all people should know, but I’m starting to lose confidence in him. I guess it’s too early to say that though.

        • They need to go third party…It makes no sense for every single title of theirs to be exclusive. Appealing to smartphone gamers is not the same.

          Reply
          • I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t care about that. I mean, I literally only play nintendo games, they’re the only games that appeal to me, so unless they really need to to save the company, I don’t think going third party is necessary.

          • It would generate a lot of revenue. On the downside, it may “kill” their console unless they can offer gamers other incentives to buy it. Obviously they’re allowed to have some exclusives, but it’s not necessary to make all. And even if it killed their console business, I bet anything they’d be making more money by making their titles multiplat than having every single be exclusive.

          • Eh, I’d rather have a nintendo console. If it’s absolutely necessary to save the company, then go for it. Otherwise, don’t IMO.

          • I’m not sure what else they can do. Unless the NX can seriously match the PS4 and Xbox, they’ll be in the same hole they’re in now.

          • How? If people are only buying your console for your exclusives (in this day and age) you’re doing something wrong and you’ll get crushed by the superior competition (exactly like they are right now). The times are different now. People need their consoles to do more than one thing now.

          • Nintendo is a company that tries to expand gaming which is why their systems always differ from their competition greatly. Their hardware is what opens up new gameplay possibilities. If they went third party, their games would be limited to the system.

          • Well their hardware is lacking quite a bit. If they go at this rate, they won’t be able to sustain themselves forever. They need to do something and let’s hope the NX is that something.

      • Like Ultron said, it was a different time. Now you need more time to make your console successful. It depends how you look at it, but to me they’re really cutting it close.

        Reply
        • Maybe? But Nintendo has more eyes on it than ever. Just the announcement would stir a lot of media attention even outside of gaming. This isn’t a Wii U situation where its reveal made it seem like an add on for the wii. It is something entirely new

          Reply
          • Which is exactly why they need to announce it earlier. It is something completely new, so they need to get the word out, advertise, promote the thing.

  13. Does anybody else have a hand held and a console/PC game they play side by side? Like you focus on one for each system? Right now I’m playing Pokemon Black and Twilight Princess

    Reply
    • Sort of? I mean I haven’t played console games in a while, but I used to do that. I’m playing two 3ds games though (but one is new leaf, so it’s only maybe 15 mins per day).

  14. So I’m thinking we’ll get a new pokemon tomorrow for sure. Hopefully it’all be an ice type, though a dark type would be cool. I had the most absurd, sad thought that maybe there won’t be any new ice types- just alola forms.

Cutiefly evo is practically a given. I imagine that trailers are meticulously combed through for spoilers- they show us only what they want us to see.

Another Alolan form would be lovely.
And of course, Lugarugen’s English reveal.

    Reply
    • Cutiefly’s evo might not even be shown. Take Trevenant from XY lol. “Is that pokemon even confirmed yet?”
But as for new pokemon, I realised we didnt get a new ice type yet. Only alolan forms.

      Reply
      • Yeah, though trevanant was in a movie credits trailer right? Not sure how that makes any real difference. I’d like the evo to be shown, but ice is my favorite type so that is my main desire. It needs buffed. That could happen due to strengths/weaknesses being changed, or just getting better ice types that can handle the other types. There’s a reason dragon types really weren’t merged by fairy: there are a lot of weak fairy pokemon and hardly any dragon lines are weaker. Most dragon lines are three stage, pseudos, or legendaries.

        Reply
    • Of course we’ll get a new ice type. That’d be ridiculous if we didn’t get at least 1, we have 7(?) fairies. I don’t feel like we’ll get more than 2 lines, so I feel like next region will be like sinnoh to compensate (maybe it’ll be Canada, eh?).

      Reply
      • Yeah but even Sinnoh didn’t have much. Idk, of course there will be one, but my brain went ahead and thought the unthinkable for a hot second.

  15. Before I go to bed I’ll comment my thoughts/expectations on today’s new info:

    Rockruff evo English name
    1-2 Alola formes
    New Ultra Beast
    1-2 new Pokemion

I dont expect starter evos till next month tbh
