PSA: Pokémon Showdown was Hacked

Pokémon Showdown, the popular unofficial Pokémon battle simulator, was hacked yesterday. This is especially important for fans who have been using the very un-secure method of using the same password for multiple sites. Although the database stored passwords in an encrypted format, it doesn’t mean the hackers can’t crack them with a little elbow grease.

PLEASE CHECK YOUR SHOWDOWN PASSWORD WAS UNIQUE. And then change it. Immediately.

  1. Man, sure is a long slog through the week to get new Sun/Moon news. I’m betting the news on the 20th will just be Rugarugan’s english name and a bit of gameplay.

  3. That’s so lame. Why would someone hack any of the Pokémon fan sites? No fandom is more dedicated than the Pokémon fandom and it sucks that someone would try to rain on our parade.

  5. Honestly do not care. I don’t know much of us that actual use Showdown. Yet, it is smart to check your password. Anyways, I cannot wait for the news tomorrow; I hope it has Rockruff’s evolutions.

    • TBH I don’t have any accounts of any value yet for this to really concern me. xD But if I got my disqus hacked or lost my account for whatever reason, I would could back as “ShinyIthsme” or something.

    • From my understanding is the hacker using your username and password in other places (assuming you use that same password).. Of course, Showdown doesn’t really offer much, so you can let the hacker play with your pokemen haha.. But if, say, your gmail account uses the same credentials, then you should go and change them now.

  6. Glad I decided to hold off on creating an account.

And if they were using the right encryption methods it should take years to crack without a rainbow table. I bet they’re still using MD5.
