Niantic Reveals Buddy Pokémon!

As we all know Niantic has been hard at work on making Pokémon GO better than ever, and now that the servers are stable they can start focusing on new features – Introducing Buddy Pokémon!

As revealed in a post on their official website, each trainer can pick one Pokémon to become their buddy, which gives you new in-game experiences and rewards – such as that specific ‘mons Candy. They will appear alongside you trainer in the profile screen (and technically in the overworld as well), and can be changed whenever and wherever. No official day on when this update will go live, but Niantic promises that it’ll be “just around the corner.”

So who are you going to choose as your buddy Pokémon? And what other features do you want to see in the app?

  1. I’m excited for this. If I’m lucky enough to find a rare pokemon, between work and taking care of my kids, I probably won’t be able to find another rare one, so getting more candies is going to be amazing

    • you can only have venomoth atm. I shall choose charmeleon, as charmanders are the rarest of pokemon, besides pikachu, snorlax, and chansey.

      Reply
      • Well it’s not the rarest it’s very rare but of what I know Gyardos, Fossils evolved forms, and those Pokemon you said (not to mention Porygon is very rare)

          • I got my pory from an egg. All i get from 10kms is Jynx, Onix, fossils, scythers, and eevees. Charmander and pikachu non existent in Ireland, but there are drowzees everywhere

  2. This is such an amazing new feature that will make the game fresh, new, more exciting and easier to complete the Pokedex – especially for those who live in more rural areas.
Glad to see Niantic is taking care of its users!

    Reply
      • Well, for those who live in a rural area they probably go to a bigger city every once in a while. Let’s say they catch one Dratini, but don’t go back to the city for weeks – or even months – and there’s no chance in hell that one will pop up in their small town. They can make their Dratini their Buddy Pokemon while they go about their daily lives, earn candies, and eventually evolve it fully without having to ever catch another one.

As for the fresh/new aspect of it: I’m at a point in the game, as I’m sure countless others are, where I’m down to the nitty gritty of my Pokedex. I have every first stage Pokemon, but not every evolution. And a lot of the holes are because I’ve traveled somewhere out of the way once, caught a Pokemon that’s more exclusive to that area, and haven’t found another of that Pokemon since/haven’t been lucky enough to hatch another (i.e. Grimer, Vulpix, Koffing, etc.). This new feature will give several people the boost to return fully to the game and catch ’em all! ‘Cause essentially this does make it easier to evolve and power up Pokemon.

And, this is just wishful thinking, with the Pokedex now easier to complete, it may usher in the Gen 2 Pokemon sooner!

    • I met as my best I passed by but not seen Tauros, Starmie, and Golduck

Ones I caught Haunter and Venomoth that are really rare

  3. This is gonna make evolving some Pokemon so much easier and I’m excited for this seeing as I only have about 24 more Pokemon to get (the only evolution line that I don’t have at all is Sandshrew, which is really annoying cause I’ve never seen one on my nearby yet and I’ve hatched hella eggs too haha, the rest I need are evos/single stages

I caught a Magmar on the bus, my gf catches them like everyday on the way to work so I’m assuming there’s a nest there

      • I’m patiently waiting for them to implement trading and hopefully it might be like a Global kinda dealio where I can trade with anyone and they can trade me one haha

        Reply
        • I’m hoping there’s both styles. Global is ok, but if you get people asking for Dragonites and offering Caterpies…it’s just gonna go to shit.

I’m also hoping for Gen 2 soon to keep things fresh.

I honestly haven’t had much time at all recently. And I’ve noticed once I get to around lvl 20+ the games sort of wants you to start spending money on it. And I’m not about to do that…

          Reply
          • Well I never search for trades on the GTS, I always deposit Pokemon for fair trades and I’ve found that it works so fingers crossed
Yeah, it gets tedious +20 especially cause of the exponential experience you need. I really wanna get the rest of Gen 1 for my living dex while saving up candies for the Gen 2 evolutions

  4. I missed the demo article so I’ll post my thoughts here. If they can find a way to ENSURE that it won’t be datamined, then I want it. But if they can’t MAKE SURE that it won’t then I’d much rather they not. But also if they do, I can’t wait to get town names and hear town and route music.

They would have to make like an entirely second program with secluded spot and junk
It’s easier to them just to make a dumbed down version
I don’t care anymore I just want info
You could give me a whole prima guide and I would scarf down every page for info

  5. How do you think they’ll handle adding different regions in terms of eggs? Will they just mix them all together so you can get multiple regions from eggs? I’m kind of hoping they’ll do different colored eggs for each region, so you sort of know what to expect when it hatches.

    Reply
    • And just the game in general. In 3-4 years, rattata will be rare-ish. Though the buddy system fixes a lot of the issues, because you can get candy.

      Reply
    • I’ve wondered about how they’re gonna implement adding in more regions. I can see them bundling all in together, with periods in between to allow people to capture etc, but then I think, 721 Pokemon in one game can be very difficult, especially if you’re only after a select few
Maybe they’ll group regions together so there’s not too many and you’ll be able to select the regions from a menu screen?

      Reply
  6. Sorry for the rapid fire comments, but I believe we’ve missed a crucial piece of info that may deconfirm the “going back to kalos” theory. The soundtrack for the game is 175 tracks long, which may seem like plenty, but XY’s soundtrack had 212 minus a few tracks from pokemon generations which was included in the album. Many of these tracks were the “changing clothes” jingles, and as we know clothes customization is returning. So 175 tracks would not be near enough for a new region, new battle themes, clothes jingles, an old region, and old battles themes. Of course this may just be new tracks, but I see it as being every track in the game. I hope I’m wrong, because I want two regions, but this evidence goes against it. 🙁

  9. Here’s a Pokemon based on headphones (Refresh)

    FONEBIA
    The Headphones Pokemon
    Type: Sound/Ghost

“Fonebia have a motif that scream “modern” to the people of Taieo. This led to the Pokemon to be very prominently featured on logos for CDs. But contrary to its modern appearance, Fonebia have really existed since ancient Taiean times; where nowadays, they are also regarded as mischievous tribal spirits by the original Taiean people.
Tame Fonebia owned by trainers are able to memorise sounds throughout the day and mix them together to create catchy music for their trainers and friends. In Taieo, there are multiple music companies that specialise in recording the music Fonebia create.
However, despite their wonderful qualities, wild Fonebia are very infamous. This is mainly due to the fact that they find humour by using their palms to cover ears of both humans and Pokemon and blast loud noises resulting in the victim becoming deaf. These sounds can measure over 200 decibels. The only condition for a Fonebia to not attack a victim, is if the victim is already occupied by another Fonebia. The people of Northern Taieo took advantage to this and created special devices resembling Fonebia that would cover their ears, so Fonebia won’t attack them. These devices would eventually become modern day headphones, although newer generations of children regard headphones to have come first.

          • Yeah, we know. Now go back to being a demon hunter in WoW and fight stromrage again because Blizzard ran out of ideas for that game(in a story sense) long ago.

          • I wasn’t trying to be; sorry if I made it sound like that. I simply meant that you said you haven’t had much time to enjoy the game, and I hoped you were and you know we say these things out of loving jokes. Like pointing out how a Rhyperior pretty much get’s ohko’ed by almost anything with grass knot. We don’t say it to piss you of, but rather to say that it sucks that a really well designed pokemon isn’t very good.

As for the shot at blizzard; yeah I meant that fully. Blizz ran out of lore for Wow long ago and have gotten to a point that their largely recycling old ideas to further extend the game. I love them as a company, and I”ll admit I play way more overwatch then I should, but I’ll point out their laziness at any point I can.

    • Why the hell would you get an eeveelution??? Evee is not a baby pokémon, and has no related incense, where the hell would you get that idea??
Sorry not trying to be rude, I’m genuinely surprised by the question lol.
I guess it would be easier if it bred eeveelutions, but it would make no sense so thank heavens that’s not a thing. Ya got to work hard for them. Plus it means if your eevee has an undesirable nature, you can repurpose it (as long as you don’t need egg moves)!!

  17. If that putative demo does stupidly spoil the whole of S&M, I’m really gonna try my hardest to stay away from that info and enjoy discovering stuff when the games come out. However, there are definitely a few bits of information I’m definitely gonna inquire after, such as:
-Number of new pokémon, number of legendaries, whether there are fossils, whether by some world-breaking miracle we somehow have cross-gen evolutions
-Number of Alola forms, and whether they’re all Kanto pokémon
-Whether there are any new megas
-wether there’s any indication of decent postgame content
-Whether ash-greninja is in the game/ whether there’s any indication they’ve included god-awful synchro or whatever it’s called as a new feature

I feel these are the sorts of questions I’d rather know the answer to before going in, rather than be disappointed (and after XY and ORAS I feel I’m definitely more likely to be disappointed by the answers and thus would like to be warned as I was for those games)

    Reply
    • Honestly depending on the demo date of release I might be at uni when it’s out and thus have enough on my plate to stay away without much trouble (though it’s still gonna be an uphill battle).
But yeah I don’t fully back myself on succeeding in staying away, though I feel the prize is worth the effort. That said if all that’s left to discover is 20 pokémon and 10 forms like last time, I’m not sure that’s worth staying away for. That’s the kind of reason I want that general information. Fingers crossed the batch is a decent size and game freak don’t go to overboard with official reveals, and fingers crossed the demo isn’t rushed out again.

  18. RUMOR ALERT! What I’m about to say could be completely fake. This German website claims a trusted source has shared that Nintendo will release an unannounced Nintendo Direct on Tuesday, September 6th at 4PM German time (7AM PST) which will announce the NX. This would beat out Sony and Apple’s September 7 events. This is the benefit of Nintendo Directs: they can beat out the competition by foregoing initial press conferences. It would also explain the very early September Direct we just had out of the blue. This could be fake, but it makes sense from a media and attention perspective. Let’s hope they show a Pokemon tech demo or something like that!

It’ll be interesting to emerge 10 days later and feel like I’ve been under a rock if the NX is indeed revealed or if GF drop a bombshell.

If such a thing were to happen on Tuesday, I expect it to happen solely in response to Sony and Apple, nothing more.

Also I don’t know how much sense it would make to keep that a secret from your character. Does he know about his mother? Did his mother leave them, so she could be champion full time? I demand answers.

Then again the question of the protagonists father have never never been answered (other than gen 3).

  24. I’m so bored, so I’m going to make my own Sun/Moon story;
◆ The Ancients forewarned of a great catastrophe befalling the Alola region reminiscent to the Great War that took place during their time and consequently resulted in the Alola region becoming an arid desert where no life could thrive. However, thanks to the powers of Solgaleo and Lunala whom the Ancients worshipped as gods, the Alola region once again became bountiful in nature and abundant in life. However, because Solgaleo and Lunala drained themselves of their energy, they began going into a deep slumber, soon to be awoken when the next catastrophe hit. Thousands of years passed and truth became fantastical stories and these stories became legend and legend became myth until the Ancients were mysteriously wiped out and modern civilization took over. However, there are those who believe in the “myths” and have dedicated their lives to discovering and unearthing the secrets of the original Alolan people and where they went and how. Such is the leader of the soon to be created Team Eclipse. She has spent decades trying to understand the Ancients and what wiped them out in the blink of an eye and if she can stop the same thing that took the Ancients from taking the lives of the modern Alolan people. However, as she delved deeper into the mystery, mysterious forces soon began shrouding her mind until she was a mere puppet to the very thing she worked so hard to fight against.

    Reply
    • ◆ She’s working towards reviving this dark Pokemon by utilizing Solgaleo and Lunala. However, to awaken the weakened Pokemon, she needs Synergy or energy emitted by Pokemon and when Pokemon battle and such, they release more of this energy. Thus, she devised the Island Challenge to promote Pokemon battles and quicken the process of awakening Solgaleo and Lunala. To avoid suspicion, she’s puppeteered Team Skull to act as the, “bad guys” while she secretly does her duties.

There you do the errand that juniper sent you to do and your friend/rival says that it would be fun to challenge the gyms on the way back to nuvema, so instead of riding the boat back you challenge burgh as the first gym, then lenora and then chili/cilan/cress and then finally you arrive in nuvema town where juniper thanks you for doing the errand, sees that you got yourselves three badges and suggest that you and your friend/rival keep getting badges. Thats all i had, i really didnt think of anything else for the story haha

Any ideas? I’ve done a Nuzlocke twice and I’m fine doing one again, but are there any other interesting ways to play through?

    Reply
    • Maybe:
Real villains are developers (as people have speculated) who want to destroy the wildlife in Alola for tourism. Team Skull then forms and causes havok in the region as a way to stop the destruction and deter investors and the developers from going through with their plans. This could include terrorizing cities and maybe even just sailing the seas in a pirate ship (like the one on the map). I’m not sure people would want to come vacation in this region if there are pirates running around and such. As for the legendaries, perhaps Team Skull/developers are in a race to use the power of the legendaries to destroy the other from messing with their plans, but really they’re both equally causing damage to the environment, which is where the protag comes in to stop both of them and show them the error of their ways. Sometimes people become blind when they’re after something.

      Reply
      • Or Team Skull tries to awaken Solgaleo/Lunala in an attempt to keep them safe from the destruction of the developers. But then when they awaken them, the legendaries become enraged and want to destroy the developers. So now we have to go defeat Solgaleo/Lunala before they hurt people, even though the devs aren’t innocent.

        Reply
    • I do believe that it was stated that solgaleo and lunala tie into the story in a different way from other cover legendaries in the past, im taking that as a way of saying that the whole evil team using the legendary’s power cliche is not part of the sun and moon story which in my opinion is awesome

    • How so? I mean, I don’t have a problem with it if Nintendo is no longer making any money selling it and it is only being resold, but if you can still go on the eshop or to a store and buy the game, then it is piracy. If you could explain what you mean that’d be appriciated.

      Reply
      • Basically, you buy the game, pop it in your homebrewed 3DS and get an unencrypted ROM.

Emulation is about how you play the game, not how you get it. In this case, emulation gets used because it provides additional benefits beyond being able to play games on your computer. It allows better graphics, different controller option, texture packs, and lot more.

I’m an emulation freak and I still find not buying games unacceptable, but I hate when people accuse me of pirating games, my bookshelf is practically full of Nintendo games.

        Reply
        • I can agree with that. I find it fine when you actually buy the game first, I’ve done it once myself. I bought white 2 from my brother before downloading blaze black. It is piracy though when you don’t actually own the game, most of my school a few years ago downloaded fire red on their phones and started playing that, that bugged me a lot, because I actually owned a copy.

          Reply
          • Yes, I agree with that, but that’s why I also believe piracy and emulation not to be the same.
It’s also better to just combat the spread of illegal ROMs and provide good legal alternatives instead of hampering the development of emulators.
You should also know that programming an emulator takes usually so long that when it finally gets easy to play a game without glitches, the system is off the shelves already. It was only until 2015 that the Wii emulator could be called feature rich and the Wii U emulator is in working stages but it is far from user friendly.

          • Yeah, if the company that made the game is no longer making any money from the game than there’s a reason to emulate.

    • Yup because all of the models in the current games are actually pretty high res on their own. It’s the 3DS that’s dragging them down. What we’re actually playing is a super compressed version of what GF is making…..which is a shame………Oh well hopefully with the NX tings will change lol

      Reply
      • Yup, because it’s actually more resource intensive to create the models matching the resolution the 3DS outputs, so the underlying data is of high quality. What the 3DS actually does is taking a high res mathematical model, take some points from it which results in a low res and jagged image. But if you tell the software to take more points in between, you’ll get the smooth image that the emulator provides.

        Reply
        • Yup yup lol This is partially why when people get angry at developers for not wanting to make games for Nintendo consoles I get annoyed….It takes WAY more effort to develop a game for a lower res system when their main project is going to be much higher res.

      Reply
      • Yeah I’m not a fan when people attribute “hardness” to having to grind….it’s not more challenging in the way that it makes you think or have to solve a puzzle it’s just more annoying…..It doesn’t better you in anyway so it just sucks lol

    • that’s why I feel gen 2 was the weakest, its by far the biggest grind. everything is such low level, I’m pretty sure you cant even find a wild pokemon above level 35 until mt silver. I like them don’t get me wrong I love all the pokemon games but these just happen to be my least favorites.

  32. Babies woke up, so had to end today’s part of the nuzlocke a little earlier than anticipated, but ended today with my chespin, pineapple, just barely evolvong, and with a litLeo named lady, butterfree named tiny, and Ledyba named punch-o. Lost a couple team members catching litleo, but it was worth it..on to lumiouse!
