New game could change Pokémon forever

Pokémon is close to 20 years old now, having been started in 1996 by Satoshi Tajiri, and the main series which began the franchise has changed only marginally overall. There are more Pokémon, more types, more characters and more ways to “Catch ’em All!”, but fundamentally each iteration has remained close to the formula introduced in Pokémon Red & Green.

new-pokemon-projectThis could change. We already know a new Pokémon project will be unveiled on August 26th, but fans have no idea what to expect. The print edition of Famitsu recently revealed, however, that this announcement is of a “very new development” for the series and described it as “earth-shattering” news. The image was shared by Japanese fan karubiimunomono.

We’re only days away, but this is our chance to discuss what could be coming to the Pokémon franchise and whether or not it will ever be the same again. Is it the start of a second main series? Is Pokémon re-tooling the core RPG? Will we finally get a Wii U game or a console addition to the main series? …or could it just be another spin-off title?

  1. This sounds really big!
    So many possibilities
    -Extraterrestrial Encounters?
    -Zygarde’s True Power?
-or so Earth Shattering that the planet of Pokemon is doomed?

  2. My third eye is getting a little overactive. This news is going to split the fanbase in two within a matter of hours. It will spawn excitement all over the internet, and initiate confusion and hatred in some people. It’s going to make us hold onto our memories of the older games, I’m sure.

  3. Let’s approach this by analyzing what wouldn’t be groundbreaking.

    HD remake? Nope.
    3D remake? Even more nope.
New title in Mystery Dungeon, Ranger, Colosseum, etc? No, nothing original here.
New title in ANY previous series? That’s to be expected!

This doesn’t involve prediction, it involves creativity. They’re finally throwing a curveball.

  4. So I’m calling a 3D (Like LoZ 3D not 3DS 3D) Open World pokemon game where you can free roam and battle trainers in the world (not in select battle scene things) that takes place in a way older area and you have to befriend the pokemon instead of capturing them in pokeballs.

    • So. You just want an open-world Action RPG. That’s reputable. Still. If they were to do it I think it would be a modern game. I don’t know if many other fans of Pokemon would enjoy an older setting.

      • True, but I just don’t want it to be too mainstream, you know? Cause then it will overrun ORAS. I want it to be Hyrule Warriors to Zelda U; Cool, but mainstream is better.

    • I want this so much.

Whatever it is, as long as it’s something grand, doesn’t follow old tried and true formulas, revolutionary, and most importantly appeals to all age groups, I would definitely be interested xD

      • The concept like I said could work well. I believe your trainer would only be able to tread about 1-3 Pokemon instead of the usually 6. Also, they would have had to make plans for the game for quite a long time.

Similar to Zelda Wii U which took 4-6 years of planning. It would be an Action RPG then. It would be fun to play! Just imaging using moves and slamming the other Pokemon!

  5. I don’t think this is going to be as groundbreaking as we might think. It doesn’t make much business sense to introduce a revolutionary product when you already have something amazing in production. It’d take away from ORAS, so it won’t be anything crazy imo.

  6. afarr. i dont want this to come across as rude. but can you please try and reduce the amount of comments you make about the project not being a mainline game. i understand it is most likely not going to happen, and i bet people know that as well

  7. if someone says Sinnoh confirmed i might really get annoyed at them considering that we are just now getting Hoenn remakes… it really annoys me that people aren’t satisfied with what they already have… Nintendo will reveal what it will in due course… we should all just be patient with them, seeing as they already have so much on their plate right now what with the present games that they are making…

  8. If it’s lame and not really game changing for the series, I’ll be mad. Unless there is something quite special about Pokken fighters, I don’t see how (seemingly) a pokemon version of super smash bros is really THAT exciting. I just want a pokemon game similar to the elder scrolls series, although I don’t think that will ever happen. Maybe the announcement is them planning on releasing future main series games on the Wii U? That’d be interesting.

          • hmmm idk cuz im also getting a halo game that comes on Nov. 11. if i got ssb it would hold me over until then, but if i got oras, the halo and pokemon games would distract from each other :O oh well ill figure it out

  10. *Inbe4 they completely rework the IV system to include HP Fairy (or maybe they’ll drop it completely). I do remember one of the reps saying they plan to rehaul battling and make it more simpler for Gen 7. But we don’t know if this is a gen 7 game…

and maybe this “ground breaking” “earth shattering” promise will be the fanmade dream of having a game with all the regions XD
