Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: Pokémon Contests

Back for more…

Over three weeks ago we brought you the first entry to the Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. A little later than we initially intended (due to issues with my internet) I am pleased to bring you the second episode, focusing on Pokémon Contests.

Once again this article has been written by the fantastic, close friend of mine, DefensiveBastiodon (who takes both full credit for it and once again my lovely profile.) Expect more from him in the future. Little does he know that I despise passing my ideas for article series on to others, but I can’t deny that he has does an excellent job thus far!

Road to ORAS: Pokémon Contests

The third generation of Pokémon introduced a series of mini games called “Pokémon Contests.” In these contests, a Pokémon was scored based on their condition on moves. They were held in Contest Halls scattered across Hoenn. In the show, characters would flaunt their well groomed monsters and take part in battles to show off fancy move combinations to win the hearts of the Judges. The original contests were eventually expanded in Sinnoh into Super Contests. It added three categories for the player to partake in: Visuals, Dance, and Acting.

Focusing on Hoenn, categories of the contests included Pokémon Conditions: Tough, Cute, Smart, Cool, and Beauty. You could improve the condition of a Pokémon by using Poké Blocks. Poké Blocks were created using various berries scattered across the region. Throw them in the Berry Blender and take off! The better you were about pressing the button on time, the smoother the Block would be. Poké Blocks also introduced new evolution method for Pokémon; Milotic could only be obtained by maxing out a Feebas’ Beauty condition and leveling it up. (This being after you find one of the elusive demons.) Aside from Blocks, scarves were also available to the player to boost the condition. You could receive these in Slateport City from the Pokémon Fan Club President.

The secondary portion of the contests was partially based on your results from the first round of conditioning. The more hearts you received, the higher the chance you had to be first the next round. Secondary judging focused on attacks. Different attacks had different levels of appeals from the audience. To go along with that, some of them even had secondary effects, such as lowering the appeal of other Pokémon or earning extra hearts for yourself. If you use a move that is in the wrong category, such as a Smart move in a Cool category, you’re not going to appeal to the audience well at all. This will lower your score.

There were four ranks to Pokémon Contests: Normal, Super, Hyper, and Master. The rank, of course, controlled the level of difficulty for each contest. You couldn’t move up to the next rank without collecting the ribbon from the previous rank. In Ruby and Sapphire, ranks were scattered (as previously mentioned) throughout the region; this, however, was changed in Emerald to where all four ranks were in Lilycove City.

The final feature of contests were the multiplayer options. Players could connect their copies of Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald to compete in the competitions. This was one of the big features of the third generation; the capability to play with three other players.

Seeing as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are getting closer and closer each day, and we are seeing new Megas appear. I would personally love to be able to use different Megas in contests for a boost in appeal. (Mega Milotic being better for Beauty, as an example.) To add to that, having online multiplayer for contests would be great too! I’m pretty sure that will happen considering they were a spectacular addition to the original games. If anything, they should make the contests more like the show: allow us to use different move combinations in battles for special effects! We already have the pledge moves, but to utilize that feature with contests would be amazing. I can see it being kind of like Super Training in all honesty…. What changes would you like to see in the contests for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire? What are your thoughts about contests being revived? Leave any comments and discuss them!

Once again we now hand over to our readers to get discussing the hopeful comeback of Pokémon Contests and the ideas shared by DefensiveBastiodon in the article.

  1. 1980-90’s Music: Iconic, legendary songs with some of the greatest singers to ever grace Earth. Just brrimming with talent.
2000-2009 Music: Some iconic voices, teen music get’s it’s first taste of world success, soulful music with amazing diversity. More diverse than the 1980’s to 1990’s music.
2010 Music: Getting better, amazing debut artists with HUGE diversity and some Mariah wannabees (tons of them).

    • While I think there are some really good artists out there now, I think I’m one of those crotchety old men who think the music from when they were younger was better.90’s and yearly 2000’s lol

          • I don’t listen to her much, but I admit I respect her because she actually sings.
Like I said, i am a huge fan of Amy Lee. She rocks. I aim to be like her, really.
And Gerard Way :3 He might not be the best, but heck, his lyrics touch my heart sometimes 😀

    • Tbh I think music is getting worse :I lot’s of the mainstream artist have mediocre voices and use autotune. And the only genera of music selling is pop/EDM any other genera’s (R&B , rock and country) rarely chart. Also albums aren’t really selling that good. I remember you had to have at least 200,000 copies or more to at least be in the top ten. Now 50,000 copies give’s you a number 2 album 0.o years ago that number of copies would had put the album way lower on the charts.

          • Unless it’s a song that they play endlessly and people get tired of. I’m not even sure if that’s what happens, I know nothing about mainstream music.

          • I know how the business works. but nowadays new guys are rarely ever given a chance due to the industries goal to keep on milking half assed shlock every year. ever wonder why rihanna makes the same crappy album every year?

          • Yeah even though I like her I’m shocked her stuff sell’s that good. But like I said. Pop and EDM sell really well and that’s all you hear on the radio. It’s not even about talent anymore ( Adele is a exception)

          • Even adele is a bit vapid. Lana Del Ray and Lorde are cool I guess but personally I’ll always stick with my progressive rock and metal

  2. I’ve recently started back watching the anime. I’m starting to see Serena care more and more about what Ash thinks about her. Is anything gonna happen there?

  3. Best selling Comparison:
    1990’s: 131+ million
    2000’s: 150+
    2010’s: 58+ million

    2000’s era was the best.

  4. Physical Sales:
1990’s: 200,000 to 1,200,000 copies needed to top the Billboard 200
2000’s: 75,000 to 1,000,000 copies needed to top the Billboard 200
2010’s: 50,000 to 300,000 copies needed to top the Billboard 200

Note: During 2013- present, most albums on the Billboard 200 Top 10 sold 10k-25k copies while during 1991-1996, most albums on the Billboard 200 Top 10 averaged 400K to 1.2 million. :O Big difference.

  5. Why must every female Prankster Sableye I get from GTS be in a Pokéball? I’m still taking them, but doesn’t anyone on this planet breed/catch female Prankster Sableye in anything other than Pokéballs?!?!

  6. Is it bad that I want all the hacking websites to go away!
I mean I know people put hard word to making those, but it is so unfair and Nintendo and GF don’t want hackers, why can’t they just go away

    Reply
    • Yes: hacking websites are fundamental at times for the government and people around the world
No: it can be seen as an act of assault and can prove fatal for gaming companies, artists, and normal citizens

So, should they go away? No.

      Reply
    • Hmmm….i dont know what to say to that. it would help if they did go away. But even i myself is guilty of useing them(piracy). No before i get attacked for useing things sush as pokedit. I have only used them to get the 6IV version of the poke i want. Then i breed it so i have a legal version.

    • The only time I recall ever cheating was using the AR to do events like Arceus and Darkrai. Granted, I was maybe 12 years old at the time so I had no morals. I haven’t cheated since then though. I like doing stuff legit.

      Reply
      • I used Action Replay to, I was like 9/10 I know its cheating But i didn’t I actually thought that was what you do to get the event legendaries since i never saw the event commercials
I know you guys probably think I am a hypocrite now :

      • Same. I wanted shinies. And all the Pokemon.
But I knew it was wrong during and after.
So I don’t do it anymore.
Plus my AR is broken, soooo yeah.

    • Honestly Idrc. People can do whatever they want to there games and it’s not that serious for me to get pressed about it. Afterall it’s just Pokemon :p but I don’t think it’s fair to the people who spends weeks making a team when somebody can make a team in minutes. But hey, life’s not fair.

      Reply
    • I do as well. I admit using them to get what I want, but I’ve realized that Game Freak does their best to keep things a secret to keep the hype going, no matter how unfair it may be.

      Reply
    • they’re always going to be sly humans who cheat to get far in life however it gets them no respect from everyone else

Its the peoples choice to cheat and if they do they get frowned upon

Gamefreak has no power to take away these cheats for cheaters always find a way so instead of continously attempting with failure, not try at all

Mine solution is to do with what apple does with gamefreak, have a patch or sometging that bans all genn’d pokemon

      Reply
        • Artists come and go, but very few will be remembered for every single song they made. What makes an artists great is if they can make even a single song ‘speak’ to you on a personal level, if you know what I mean.

Songs like Mad World, and Everybody Hurts are two of my favourites, but nobody even knows the artists behind those.

          Reply
          • same, i dont stick to an artist for everyone has great songs and bad songs

i stick to the meanignful and rhythmic songs

            terrible things by mayday parade
love never felt so good by michael jackson

            some great songs

      • But the artists are the one’s who interpret the song. Without the vocalist to bring life to the song, it would just be words on a piece of paper.

        Reply
        • no the viewers of the song interpret more than the artist

its like a movie, the viewers are just as important as the actors in the movie

both play a vital part to success

however the interpretation and meaning is determined by the viewers the feel is created by the artist

          Reply
          • the artist is well an artist

he “draws a painting” with words and a vision in his/her head

then each viewer guess and interprets the meaning and purpose of the “painting”

the artist isnt as vital as he just creates the bait for the viewers to consume

          • an artist makes thousands of paintings however only the ones viewer can feel and interpret can get famous

        • During his/her career an artists will write hundreds of songs, there is not a chance in hell that I will listen to or even like all of them. I’m not saying I don’t care about the artists, I’m saying because an artists has one good song doesn’t mean the rest if their music will be amazing.

I don’t have a specific genre that I prefer or an artists I love, just certain songs that I cannot get enough of.

          Reply
    • No, Ariana Grande is her own person.
I will continue to advocate that. Might have some similarities.
No two artists are the same. Heck, even the same artists sometimes have different sounds. Look at Amy Lee! Her albums have different sounds.

      • I see Ariana as another one of those young stars filtered out by Nick/Disney who will inevitably crash and burn.

          • I see it as cute. Other people in the Problem video were sexy, she was just being cute to me :3
Then again, I’m not a guy.

          • I think Miley has a plan… You never know, she might be changing her image, get’s lot of recognition, amazing album sales, then BAM good girl image. Timing is everything in the industry. I don’t want her to end up like Britney who tried but it didn’t work out.

          • I will admit, there are some songs that I did love.
Until I saw the videos, I kinda liked Adore You and Wrecking Ball. I still kinda do.

  11. I find it funny that even though time isn’t supposed to exist in the Distortion World, time in the in-game’s clock still flows, thus allowing Eevee to still evolve into Espeon or Umbreon in there.

It’d be nice if the in-game’s clock would stop in the Neo Distortion World.

  13. If Mariah … a pop singer… would have never thought to put a rapper, Old Dirty Bastard, on Fantasy back in 95, there would be no “Dark Horse” feat. Juice J, no “Drunk in Love” feat Jay-Z, no Justin Bieber feat. Nicki Minaj. Mariah did that first. She started the pop song featuring a rapper. Just remember that.

She also has more #1’s than Elvis Presley. And only two #1’s away from tieing the Beatles with 20 #1 hits. She’s winning. She did that.
