Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: Pokémon Contests

Back for more…

Over three weeks ago we brought you the first entry to the Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. A little later than we initially intended (due to issues with my internet) I am pleased to bring you the second episode, focusing on Pokémon Contests.

Once again this article has been written by the fantastic, close friend of mine, DefensiveBastiodon (who takes both full credit for it and once again my lovely profile.) Expect more from him in the future. Little does he know that I despise passing my ideas for article series on to others, but I can’t deny that he has does an excellent job thus far!

Road to ORAS: Pokémon Contests

The third generation of Pokémon introduced a series of mini games called “Pokémon Contests.” In these contests, a Pokémon was scored based on their condition on moves. They were held in Contest Halls scattered across Hoenn. In the show, characters would flaunt their well groomed monsters and take part in battles to show off fancy move combinations to win the hearts of the Judges. The original contests were eventually expanded in Sinnoh into Super Contests. It added three categories for the player to partake in: Visuals, Dance, and Acting.

Focusing on Hoenn, categories of the contests included Pokémon Conditions: Tough, Cute, Smart, Cool, and Beauty. You could improve the condition of a Pokémon by using Poké Blocks. Poké Blocks were created using various berries scattered across the region. Throw them in the Berry Blender and take off! The better you were about pressing the button on time, the smoother the Block would be. Poké Blocks also introduced new evolution method for Pokémon; Milotic could only be obtained by maxing out a Feebas’ Beauty condition and leveling it up. (This being after you find one of the elusive demons.) Aside from Blocks, scarves were also available to the player to boost the condition. You could receive these in Slateport City from the Pokémon Fan Club President.

The secondary portion of the contests was partially based on your results from the first round of conditioning. The more hearts you received, the higher the chance you had to be first the next round. Secondary judging focused on attacks. Different attacks had different levels of appeals from the audience. To go along with that, some of them even had secondary effects, such as lowering the appeal of other Pokémon or earning extra hearts for yourself. If you use a move that is in the wrong category, such as a Smart move in a Cool category, you’re not going to appeal to the audience well at all. This will lower your score.

There were four ranks to Pokémon Contests: Normal, Super, Hyper, and Master. The rank, of course, controlled the level of difficulty for each contest. You couldn’t move up to the next rank without collecting the ribbon from the previous rank. In Ruby and Sapphire, ranks were scattered (as previously mentioned) throughout the region; this, however, was changed in Emerald to where all four ranks were in Lilycove City.

The final feature of contests were the multiplayer options. Players could connect their copies of Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald to compete in the competitions. This was one of the big features of the third generation; the capability to play with three other players.

Seeing as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are getting closer and closer each day, and we are seeing new Megas appear. I would personally love to be able to use different Megas in contests for a boost in appeal. (Mega Milotic being better for Beauty, as an example.) To add to that, having online multiplayer for contests would be great too! I’m pretty sure that will happen considering they were a spectacular addition to the original games. If anything, they should make the contests more like the show: allow us to use different move combinations in battles for special effects! We already have the pledge moves, but to utilize that feature with contests would be amazing. I can see it being kind of like Super Training in all honesty…. What changes would you like to see in the contests for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire? What are your thoughts about contests being revived? Leave any comments and discuss them!

Once again we now hand over to our readers to get discussing the hopeful comeback of Pokémon Contests and the ideas shared by DefensiveBastiodon in the article.

  1. Off-topic here sorry, but what if gym leader Winona popularizes Sky Battles in ORAS? Maybe not in her gym, but at some point during the game?

And maybe Wallace gets a type-change in his specialty, like from Water to Fairy (if a rumored mega evolution for Milotic proves true)?

    Reply
    • i think wallace would still be water as his gym badge is exactly the same

i think that winnona may have a sky backround as her battle backround HOWEVER i doubt a sky battle will be mandatory as not everyone has a flying type at that point in time

also is your avatar green laturn :O?

      Reply
      • Hee, the avatar is Adam Scott (Parks and Rec’s Ben Wyatt) as Green lantern.

I was thinking Juan will be the Sootopolis gym leader and keep the gym as Water-type while his apprentice Wallace changes his type specialty as the Hoenn Champion.

As for Winona, yep not mandatory but more like how sky trainers leave their battles as optional.

  2. On-topic: Seeing the Pokemon utilize their attacks in a Contest would be great. Would it be too much to ask if they added the Visual and Dance options from DP too? I imagine adding prop ops for every Pokemon’s 3D model may be difficult.

    • hmm i really just want a visual appeal round with the re addition of seals

also i hope they added the battle rounds :/

  3. Still looking for that 6IV Mudkip…
Strangely enough the first Mudkip in every batch of 5 is perfect, 4 out of 5 times. 😮

  4. I don’t understand why people feel some type of way about most of the competive scene pokegenning. It’s there game and they could do whatever they want with it. You getting mad and jumping on them isn’t going to diffuse the situation. It just make’s you seem like a hater. So either stop complaining or stop competive battling

      • Honestly. It wasn’t directed towards menacing. It’s mostly talking about the pokegeners vs the legit players. And I seen time and time again. Where somebody will attack somebody for having pokegen Pokemon ( even here) it just irks my nerves. I may not agree with pokegenning, but I’m not going to bash somebody for doing it. It’s there game and I have better things to get mad about.

    • Hmmmmm although i have no authority over what people can and can’t use in a team (regardless of tier level of cheapness)
And i’m too hot blooded to stop battling (i think my body would crash)
      So i’m at impasse,

  5. wow the funniest thing today is during my graduation my formal principal gave a quote on winners and losers

now a winning arguement occured how ironic

    Reply
    • When a winner makes a mistake, he says, ìI was wrong.

When a loser makes a mistake, he says, It wasnít my fault.

A winner works harder than a loser and has more time.

A loser is always too busy to do what is necessary.

      A winner goes through a problem;

A loser goes around it, and never gets past it.

      A winner makes commitments.

      A loser makes promises

A winner says, I’m good but not as good as I ought to be.

A loser says, Im not as bad as a lot of other people.î

      A winner listens.

A loser just waits until his turn to talk.

A winner respects those who are superior to him and tries to learn something from them.

A loser represents those who are superior to him and tries to find chinks in their armor.

A winner feels responsible for more than his job.

A loser says, ìI just work here.

A winner says, There ought to be a better way to do it.

A loser says, That ís the way its always been done.

Powerful stuff, man. Powerful. And very true.

        • yeah i loved that quote, it will always stay with me
;~: i love my formal principal, it was a shame he got promoted XD ( i wonder why?)

    • you’re not going to do the musketeer trio first?
but Regirock gave me problems; a couple months of soft-resetting (though not constantly) + pure misfortune w/moves (i missed 5+ hypnosis in a row) and pokeballs, + failing in counting how many moves it used = fail shiny :c

      Reply
      • I haven’t experienced the feeling of a failed shiny myself, but I think one of the thoughts running through my head would be, “I will see it again”. Sorry about that though, must have been rough. And yeah, I would rather go for the Regi’s first. If Game Freak hosts an event for those shinies, though, I swear XD

        Reply
        • It sucks when you fail catching a shiny, because you never really expect it. I watch videos on people catching the shiny i’m looking for (usually for motivation) and sometimes i find a fail video. I remember thinking to myself that it would never happen to me, yet it did :c
Just be sure to practice several times (i would recommend way more than what you normally would think (i.e., if you think 30 is enough, do way more than that) just to make sure you minimize the chances of failing. :3

          Reply
      • Yeah it has most of them c:
The ones it doesnt have include: Main legendary pokemon, excluding Kyurem (it technically has Reshiram & Zekrom, but those are shiny-locked), all the Kanto & Johto legendaries, most Hoenn legendaries (only one appears, an eon duo legendary, but it depends on the game you get; i dont think the other appears as a roaming legendary), Shaymin, Darkrai, Arceus, Thundurus and Tornadus (i think Landorus appears)

        Reply
          • Plus you can get the other eon duo pokemon (it will be roaming for you, b/c latias doesnt appear in b2 and appears as a roaming legendary in SS) and another Groudon (assuming that you’re restarting emerald)

      • It’s just the thought that a GAME started a fight over something that’s not relevant or real boggles my mind. I would never get into a fight over a video game and something as petty as contest partners. .-. Is it really that serious. Sounds stupid to me. But I’m done speaking on it. I just giving my #2cents

        • To summarize what happened, he was butt-hurt that I called him a poser.

I asked for a contest partner that likes fairies, he has NEVER expressed interest in a fairy Pokemon at all – but calls himself the “fairy king” ironically enough – so that sounds like a poser to me. So I called it how I seen it, and next thing you know, I get hit with a “atleast I don’t hack my Pokemon”. Where did that come from? Cause I SWEEPED you the last time we battled? Oh!

It’s stupid to me to be pressed over my pokemon being better than his.. And that’s my 2cents.

          Reply
          • He’s been annoying me lately anyway. Like I came on here yesterday and was just reading over everyone’s comments without commenting myself ^_^ and I saw him write to igneous… “Heavy, Igneous is my hatching partner, we have more in common”… Well when did I ever agree on you being my hatching partner is what I thought to myself LOL. You literally know 0 things about me personally, and I to him, so why would I be offended that you guys have more in common with each other lol. Go hatch together and be boring together.. shit LOL.

I posted a list of events I had earlier today and he randomely called them all hacks. I don’t know he’s been so pressed over my Pokemon lately.

  6. Probably see if I can knab a shiny Groudon off GTS. I have a shiny kyogre/rayquaza luckily.

Have to do that sometime before ORAS comes out cause I’m pretty sure they will shiny lock Groudon/Kyogre LOL.
