establish a light source (usually from upper left)
divide the sprite into “sections” (head, torso, legs, etc.)
stuff in each section close to the light source is light, it gets darker the farther away from the light source you get. Under the head (where the neck is more or less) and where the underside of the torso is should be dark.

I know it’s old news, but I just realized that I never gave my opinion on this: Pikachu is Japan’s Official FIFA Mascot.
Here’s my opinion:
1. WHY?

Cause Pikachu is widely known as Pokemon’s mascot. Show anyone a pikachu and they’ll think of pokemon. Show anyone who had very little knowlege of pokemon a Mawile or a Noivern. Nothing. Just a lot of confusion. But i see your point.
And to think Clefairy was meant to be Pokemon’s Mascot
I MEAN. It is Mountmoon’s mascot. AT LEAST.
But Satoshi was meant to be given a Clefairy instead of a Pikachu, but Pikachu’s Popularity skyrocketed beyond comprehension so they named Pikachu the official Mascot of Pokemon
Clefairy was deemed too manly.

That and there weren’t really any yellow mascots for anything at the time, and GF wanted their mascot to be yellow.
