Could Pokémon come to iOS & Android?

Nintendo reported their third straight loss to investors, and it seems as though they may be willing to seek new ways to make profit.

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s president, said he would continue to run the company and added, “We are thinking about a new business structure. Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It’s not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone.”

As iOS and Android devices have gained market traction and improved hardware, they’ve been seen as direct competitors to Nintendo’s handheld consoles. Mobile gaming applications often cost only a couple of dollars, much less than traditional handheld games.

The Pokémon Company has released some apps for mobile devices, including their 3D Pokédex and a Japan-exclusive simple rhythm game which tied into the trading card game, but they have never released other games.

We’ll have to watch Nintendo’s strategies closely. Would you like to see Mario, Zelda or Pokémon on your phone or tablet?

  1. I plan on playing Super Mario 3D World for many hours tonight. Hopefully I can 100% Star World and move my way onto Mushroom and Flower worlds.

  2. Does it bother anyone that Ditto can transform into Mega Pokémon? Kinda takes away the ultimate unique factor that Megas stand by.

  3. It makes business sense for sure. There are a lot of Pokemon roms for IOS and Android devices, so maybe they’ll release old games such as the first few generations. I don’t think the future of Pokemon is in the hands of these devices though.

  4. With the smartphone industry growing at a rapid rate, the usage of smartphones are increasing. This could actually help Nintendo even more! More $$$$ = higher quality games.

Even if this is true, I feel like Pokemon should stay on handhelds. It’s not the same as playing on a phone. Smaller apps like the Pokedex app are fine, but a main game? That would take a ton of memory and it would most likely lag :/
