[SPOILERS] Meet Chesnaught, Delphox and Greninja!

This post contains spoilers for Pokémon X & Pokémon Y. The comment section of this post will also contain spoilers for the upcoming games. Do NOT proceed it you wish to avoid details on the game.

We’re now exactly one week away before X & Y release globally next Saturday, and the wait is becoming unbearable. While fans are eagerly awaiting the release date to come about there’s not a huge amount of news for us to cover. However, as most fans are likely aware the final evolutions for the Kalos Starter Pokémon are now known.

While there aren’t a huge amount of details on the Pokémon we received so long awaited information…

Quilladin evolves into the Pokémon Chesnaught. As we speculatively reported back in July the Pokémon resembles a knight in some ways, and features heavy armour all over its body. It is said the armour covering the Pokémon is able to withstand the blast from a bomb. Chesnaught is Grass/Fighting type.

Braixen evolves into Delphox. The Pokémon maintains the almost magical-theme and resembles a witch of sorts. It is Fire/Psychic type and is able to generate temperatures of up to 5,400°F using its psychic powers.

Finally, but by no means least, Frogadier evolves in Greninja. Again, like we posted back in July, Greninja appears to play on a ninja theme, and looks to be an extremely capable Pokémon in battle. Greninja is a Water/Dark type Pokémon.

We’re drawing closer and closer to X & Y and our coverage could start as early as this Thursday. Some of you may noticed but we haven’t followed through with The Journey to X & Y, sadly we won’t be posting any further articles in the series, as big news is likely to hit daily now. Instead we will move articles outside of the #J2XY and continue them after the games have released.

  6. I was always going to be choosing Chespin, and I will admit that when they announced Quilladin, I was very disappointed. But as soon as they announced Chesnaught, I was caught off-guard. But, I warmed up to it almost immediately. I love how it looks and in my opinion, it is by far the best starter evolutionary line.

… And this incredible artwork by the ever-amazing Xous54 just demonstrates how much of a ‘badassmotherfucker’, Chesnaught is going to be! Granted his stats don’t look as amazing as Delphox’s currently, but I still think he’s going to be amazing.

    • you dont need 2 flying types or 2 grass types or 2 dragon types. go with:
      Zoroark
      Chesnaught
      talonflame
      Goodra
      Aurorus
and Helliosk or another electric type

      • Ralts was a Pokemon i had to pick up in everyone of my Emerald playthroughs. Incredibly hard to get up to par, but once it evolved into a Gardevoir, it could literally sweep E4 members for me with Calm Mind/Psychic/Thunderbolt

  8. Luckily, I like all of the final evolutions enough that I can use all of them at one point or another. Many gens I have like two out of three, yet wanted to use all of the starters.

I will use Fennkin 1st, Froakster 2nd, and Chespin 3rd.

  9. I need help with decisions for team!

    For sure:
    Delphox
    Aurorus
    Goodra
    Florges

What else??? I was thinking Hawlcha, Trevenant, Aegislash, or Avalugg. Suggestions???

      • We all have different opinions. I didn’t like their designs at first, but they grew on me rather nicely, so I know where you are coming from. 🙂

        Reply
      • I think type wise they’re without a shadow of a doubt the best.
Designs are subjective to opinion but from what I’m seeing, it seems that the majority will at least agree they are as good as anything between 3-5 and many would say even further..

        Reply
    • Potentially the strongest we’ve had. The closest set are 4th but even then the Kalos starters seem much stronger. Great typings and base stats. Now we only need good movepools.
Design wise I’d say they’re the best since 2nd/3rd gen..and if I’m stretching it probably the best of all time when you don’t factor in nostaliga!

  10. Delphox, Malamar and Travenant so far. Maybe Scraggy and Ralts if they are available early on. Might even switch out Scraggy for Pangoro cos it’s new, but depends on the stats. Any other ideas…Need a water type and a flier, but none tickle my fancy at the moment…

  11. Time for another Xatu Team Conflict!

    -Greninja (Water/Dark) Represents #TeamFroakie
-Venusaur (Grass/Poison) Represents Pokemon’s distant past
    -Aegislash (Steel/Ghost) Represents type originality
-Noivern (Flying/Dragon) Represents one of my first “love at first sight” reveal situations.
-Aurorus (Rock/Ice) Represents going against the common choice of Tyrantrum
-Gardevoir (Psychic/Fairy) Represents Hoenn, my original Pokemon region.

This will most likely be my final choice.

  21. … I just noticed something stupidly amusing in the coastal dex.

    http://pastebin.com/B6PyQy2Y

I was just looking at the empty space before Lapras, and envisioning a Pre-Evo, which made me think about Kangaskhan, and look at it, and of course, there is no space before it… But there is something before it. Cubone, and Marowak. Before Kangaskhan. Well played, Gamefreak, well played.

  23. Greninja, Pangoro, Heliolisk, Florges (Or the Ground/Fairy, whichever is better)

And then a Fire type. I’m really hoping for another one to be revealed that I absolutely adore, and then I’ll use Litleo or Fletchling until I get it. Otherwise, I will probably use Pyroar or Talonflame, or maybe the event Torchic. I’m still against using previous Pokemon though.

My last slot depends on my other Pokemon, but I’m most likely to use a bulky attacker. Goodra and Tyrantrum are currently being considered but I’m hoping something I like more comes up (I do really like Goodra though, I just don’t love it.) If I get the Ground/Fairy rather than Florges then this spot becomes even more open, and I will use something I like Aegislash, or maybe Klefki. I’m waiting for the rest of the dex before I finalise my choices.

  25. Just counting the Kalos Pokemon, I think this will be my first Team in X* (counting pre-evolutions because they eventually will evolve):
    Fennekin
    Honedge
    Inkay
    Amaura
    Hawlucha
    Flabébé

*Team may change as gameplay progresses.

    Reply
      • Why would Volcarona destroy Fennekin? or Amaura? Both would take neutral damage at best from them, and Amaura I think may have some good special defenses, and learns rock attacks, which in turn will destroy Volcarona.

        Reply
          • We’ve seen that Amaura has good special attack, and it sure as hell will learn Ancient Power. And okay yeah, but I don’t think Volcarona by turn can really touch Fennekin either, it looks like Fennekin too has a good special defense, and at least both of Fennekin’s stabs will be doing full damage.

  26. For those of you building you building teams right now remember.

Those you don’t use now you can use in the next Game for 6th Gen 😀

    Greninja: Level 36
    Atk: 78
    Def: 57
    SP. Atk: 99
    SP. Def: 58
    Speed: 101

From this I would estimate that Delphox is nearly perfectly balanced since you know she’s a Mage and Greninja might out perform Delphox SP. Atk wise.

    Reply
    • I think people are frustrated because Dark has been around for 5 generations now and is the only type to not have a gym (since Fairy has a gym this gen)

      Reply
      • I dunno. Maybe its just me but as long as i could get my hands on a dark type and the gym leaders had great design and character i don’t care what type they have. But i guess i understand the sentiment a lil bit because i believe every champion should be dragon haha.

        Reply
    • The difficulty of the gym leaders is not really the point. It’s just the fact that, Gym Leaders are one of the primary aspects of the games, and also their gyms, which can have some novel aspects to them, and every Type has at least one, except Dark. Especially after Gen 3, when they had a gym by, all accounts, SHOULD have been Dark, due it’s gimmick of being pure dark and opening up when you defeat trainers. It’s a no different argument than for those wanting a Poison Type legendary, because you can easily say ‘Legendaries suck, why would you want a Poison Legendary then.’ And that is a very weak point to be taking, especially when you have basically this universal concept within the games, Legendaries, and Gym Leaders, and you apply them to everything but these single types, that seems like it is being singled out. Besides, you ignore the aspect that Gym leaders are generally pretty cool in designs, so that’s another reason to have them, and so are Legendaries.

      Reply
    • I hope they drag the gym’s out a bit longer and mix villain’s with gym leaders more … BW had everything so seperate and systematically played out

  55. I’m soooo happy with the gym leaders but at the same time so sad it’s confirmed they only have 3 pokemon each. I just hope the difficulty level makes up for it!

  56. I absolutely love the new Gym Leaders and the Badges. I think that they are some of the most interesting and fantastic designs we’ve seen in a long LONG time.

I think that the names for the badges could’ve been a bit more inventive though. Not that I’m complaining of course. But just like ‘Prince Azulon’, these are names that I would personally choose for them. What about you?

    Instead of ‘Bug Badge’ – ‘Cocoon Badge’;
    Instead of ‘Fairy Badge’ – ‘Pixie Badge’;
Instead of ‘Psychic Badge’ – ‘Stellar Badge’.

  62. With the disappointment out there in another generation without a dark gym, I am reminded of another dark type letdown. Generation II – when they re-typed magnemite/magneton as electric/steel, they should have done ekans/arbok a favor and retyped them to poison/dark. Show Arobok some love…I mean, even Weezing has higher attack. 🙁

    • Yeah, Dark Type is the only type now to not have a gym, and also not have a Pokemon representative in the original 150. At the very least, Fairy is going to have FIVE, and Steel two. *Clefairy/Clefable, Jigglypuff/Wigglytuff, and Mr. Mime* At least there is something from Gen 1 that can evolve into a Dark type at least, Eevee.

  68. I hate to be anti-hype but I’m kinda disappointed that it seems Gamefreak have chosen to go in the direction of an overly easy game without any challenge to allow anyone to pick up this game and get into it at anytime. Obviously I won’t know until I play through the game but it seems like every area/trainer and gym is a breeze to complete without any real challenge judging from leaks and reviews. One thing I LOVED about BW2 was challenge mode as some fights could get pretty tough but when you did beat that tough gym/boss you felt really strong and powerful whereas here I feel like nothing is going to really challenge me and make me think out different strategies etc..

    Reply
    • While a challenge mode hasn’t been confirmed, it hasn’t been disproven either…so, maybe there is hope. If there is one, I hope it’s more challenging than that of BW2, which I still found easy.

      Reply
    • All normal NPC’s are set at 0 AI no matter what. The gym leaders though have quite a high AI during Challenge Mode. I have to disagree. This may be the hardest game yet because the AI seems pretty high.

      Reply
        • Doesn’t matter. For example Heartgold and Soulsilver had the highest AI of any Pokemon game to date. (Just checked that out). Times that by 3 with each leader using 3 Pokemon and your tail would be on fire.

          Reply
      • Regardless of how high or low the AI is, adding more Pokemon will always increase the difficulty. Which is what people looking for a challenge want. The only reason i can see for Gamefreak doing this is because of the default target audience. However it doesn’t mean they couldn’t have added an optional harder difficulty for the more mature audience.

        Reply
    • Lets be serious. The gym leaders are rarely a challenge. YOu can’t compare the traditional gameplay to something that was only in BW2…..

      Reply

Aegislash… er, sorry to say I don’t quite remember what moves I’ve had him learn and turn down over the levels, so here’s everything.

Fury Cutter, Pursuit, Shadow Sneak, Slash, Iron Defense, Night Slash, Power Trick, Head Smash, Aerial Ace, and King’s Shield.

King’s Shield has the user take a defensive stance while protecting itself from damage. Harshly lowers the Attack of the attacker who makes direct contact.”

  72. Not that I like them, but so far it looks like Glameow and Purrugly are absent from the Pokedex again. The one game I don’t have is Pearl, and that’s the only place they can be caught, and so the one line I haven’t been able to catch. Does GF hate them? (I kind of do, but that’s beside the point)

    • You could always trade for them. Luckily for us, this generation will make trading, battling and connection with each other that much easier! 🙂

      Reply
      • Yeah, it just struck me, as I can’t think of another non-legendary line, non-starter, that you can only catch in one game so far. I think there is a hidden hollows funfest mission for it, though, but I’ve never unlocked that.

  73. I think one of the most exciting thing to think about is, this is still not the end. It’s amazing to think about the fact that there are going to be more generations, more amazing Pokémon, features, graphics, Gym Leaders, Elite 4, Badges.

    HNNNNNG.

Aegislash starts the battle in Shield Forme. It seems he changes to Blade Forme when you use an attack that deals damage, and back to Blade Forme when you use something like King’s Shield. Here’s what I’ve observed:

Battle start, Aegislash in Shield Forme.
    I select King’s Shield.
Aegislash uses King’s Shield, stays in Shield Forme.
Enemy attacks. The damage is prevented, and the enemy’s Attack harshly falls.

Turn two, Aegislash in Shield Forme.
    I select Iron Head.
Enemy attacks, Aegislash takes damage normally.
Aegislash turns to Blade Forme and uses Iron Head.

Turn three, Aegislash in Blade Forme.
    I select Swords Dance.
Enemy attacks, Aegislash takes damage normally.
Aegislash stays in Blade Forme and uses Swords Dance.

Turn four, Aegislash in Blade Forme.
    I select King’s Shield.
Aegislash turns to Shield Forme, uses King’s Shield.
Enemy attacks. The damage is prevented, and the enemy’s Attack harshly falls.”

    • This guy will probably ravage UU. Now, it might look like a low tier because of its high stats, but it would be unusable with a choice item preventing it from sweeping with choice scarf, or gaining the oft-needed power of a choice band. Also, in Blade Forme its defense stats are abysmal with low HP and defenses. Also, the problem with HP hinders its effectiveness as a wall in Shield Forme, and Shield Forme can’t hit opponents very hard. However, it has a good list of resistences and it only weak to four types.

      Reply
      • I don’t know if it even uses it’s attack stat while in shield form anyways. It might be used to calculate confusion damage, but I’m pretty sure it automatically switches to blade form when it does an attack to deal damage.

        Reply
        • Well, if that’s the case, this pokemon would be too hard for one to actually use, defensively anyway. And after it changes, its defensive stats are around 65/60/60 (based on similarities with Mienshao), so assuming that a pokemon is faster with a super effective attack, it will be OKO’d.

          Reply
          • If you read that up there, that’s just how it works. It starts off in it’s defense form, and it changes into it’s attack stats when it attacks, but as it’s not that fast, it’ll probably go after them anyways, so it takes the hit in defense mode, then switches to the attack mode and then attacks like that. It can then use Protect, or that Royal Guard, which is a protect like move, which thus would go first, and it would go back to it’s defense mode.

          • That’s still an ineffective strategy mainly because its low HP, lack of reliable recovery, and attacking the same way Slaking does. But that’s just my opinion.

          • How does it attack the same way Slaking does? It isn’t losing a turn, it’s a case that it starts off in shield mode, with high defenses. We don’t know what all attacks it can use and still remain in that mode, maybe status moves while in defense mode allows it to use them, but not switch to attack mode, and thus keep their massive defenses, while setting up maybe Autotomatize. Then when you actually attack, it definitely switches to Blade Mode, swapping attack and defenses, and can do damage. It’ll turn back to Defense mode when you choose to use a defensive move like Royal Guard or probably Protect, and note, Royal Guard also reduced their Attack Harshly, but probably only if it’s a physical contact move, but either way. Plus, we haven’t seen it’s moves, so we don’t know what kind of recovery it might or might not have.

          • You make good points, but we aren’t taking into account status conditions: particularly burning, That make Aegislash almost useless in Blade Forme while chipping away at its low health. Also, paralyzing it would completely halt sweeping with Automize, as would phasing. Also, spikes damage would lower its longevity. You would also have to consider whether you’d want it to carry leftovers for longevity purposes or life orb (not choice band or scarf as it would need to have full move choice) for the extra damage every pokemon needs. However there is the -10% health every attack. It would probably suffer from it weaknesses as fire and ground are major coverage and STAB moves. However, it would be a good revenge killer due to shadow sneak because it switches before attacking. It would also be a good spin blocker in defense forme because f its great defenses.

          • That also depends on how you use it too, because based on this, it also has a good special attack, on par with it’s Physical attack while in blade mode, so it can ignore the Burn Status Condition in terms of damage drop in that way.

          • That’s true, I’m just basing it off its known move pool that only includes physical attacks; and it can probably be taught Shadow Ball and Mirror Shot. I also think it depends on how King’s Shield works. I’m pretty sure it only works on physical attacks due to its side effect because it would be OP if it blocked any direct damage and lowered a particular stat.

    • Kinda off topic but this pokemon reminds me of Aegis from Persona 3! O: and i also see it in it’s name, it reminds me of her persona kinda!

  80. I’d like it if Deoxys got a new ability instead of pressure where it randomly changes into one of it’s formes when sent out.

For example, if it’s in Normal forme to begin with, it can either transform when sent out or remain in normal forme if it’s random.

With that being said, Mega Evolution for Deoxys?

  83. well im cancelling my preorder, these are the worse f***ing starter evolutions I have ever seen. I thought maybe that these where horrible nightmares but oh well. sorry Nintendo I am done with pokemon, so is my wife, and my kids.

    • Nintendo, Gamefreak and the entire fanbase of Pokemon are better off without people that are so..

Firstly I don’t understand such extreme hatred towards the starters when they’ve recieved arguably the best reception since a good few generations.
Secondly, we’ve been treated this time around. Awesome type combinations and the starters being based off the RPG theme. A few of us were shocked at the way they evolved but now we love them because WE ARE OPEN MINDED or at least try to be!!
Thirdly, if you hate the starters that much why don’t you ditch them or don’t evolve them. Better still just use one of your favourite Kanto starters as your main. Game freak goes and gives us a nostalgic treat in the Kanto starters and what do they get back? Posts such as the above.
If you’re ditching the games because apparently according to you the starters are a horrible nightmare then you’re expectations are sky high and I can safely say that type of mentality will always draw criticism. Look to embrace bro. Join the fun or catch your train back to Distortion World.

  86. just like in gen 4, the new evolutions of older pokemon did not have a regional dex number in the original games, but they did have a national dex number. Of course, in that case, all the new evos were listed before the legends, but they might just decide to put all the evolutions AFTER the legends here. I dunno if its wishful thinking though :/

  87. who’s the pseudo-legendary of kalos? is it goodra or noivern? goodra would be the only pseudo-legendary to have a single type. and i think noivern looks pretty badass. hoping to have an evolution of noibat before noivern or an evolution after noivern.
